THE MANAGER
Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park to you all for tonight’s Sydenhams Wessex League One game between ourselves and Romsey Town. I’d like to welcome Adam Pullinger his staff and players and everyone associated with the Town to Foxcotte tonight. They did make a great start with wins over New Milton Town, Whitchurch, Fleet Town (in the League Cup) and Selsey (in the FA Vase). They have hit a bit of a rocky patch with no points in the last five games including recent home defeats to Ringwood Town and US Portsmouth and a 1-0 away defeat to Alton. We managed to get back to winning ways last Tuesday but we definitely made hard work of it after making a great start through another goal from Lockey.
The long delay late on in the game also didn’tt help but it was certainly a nasty clash between the two Whitchurch players and I must commend all that helped with the injured player from both teams, not only on the pitch but also off it. We were disappointed that we couldn’t continue to build on last Tuesday’s Tuesday result when our match with Verwood was called off on Saturday. Also at the time of writing we are still unsure what the future holds for our level of football with the upcoming lockdown. Hopefully we will be able to continue as any further delays will certainly impact future fixtures in order to complete the season. Having said that, I fully understand the reasoning’s behind this lockdown and wish everybody to remain safe and well over the next month or so. Please get behind your team tonight, let’s continue to move forward together, up the table. Enjoy the game and stay safe.
We had a wonderful opportunity to extend the lead from the penalty spot but we failed to find the target. That put us under a bit of pressure for the second half, especially after the previous draw at Fawley, where they equalised late on.

THE BOARDROOM
CHRIS WHITE A warm welcome to all of you this evening, particularly the officials, players and supporters who have made the journey up the A3057 from Romsey, and also to our own supporters whose encouragement during this rather stuttering start to our season is much admired and appreciated. Regarding our current position in the League 1 table, different people react differently to certain situations. Some struggle to stay positive when things are not going as well as they would like, whereas others are able to take setbacks in their stride.
Defeats on the pitch may hurt us in the short term but the prizes are only awarded at the end of the season. If Mo Farah was near the rear of the field after three-and-a-half half laps of a 10,000m race (approximately ely the distance we’ve travelled so far this season) then that would not be as much of a concern as if he were near the back after 25 laps. We can’t always lead from the front and we’ve convinced that our team will come good given patience and support. By rising up through the field maybe our journey is destined to become that little bit more exciting! It maybe a long and arduous battle but nothing worth achieving comes easily. It does, however, become easier if we all see it through together. Tonight’s re-arranged arranged game is an opportunity to build on the victory last Tuesday but it won’t be easy against a very good Romsey side. Enjoy tonight’s ’s game and I wish you all a safe journey home and I hope to see once again soon.
I always aim to place myself in the latter camp but I can understand both points of view.

COACHES CORNER
JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome to our first home game of the season. These are my first programme notes for the new season and both myself and JC will look to give you insight from the coach’s perspective this season. Having been out of the game for a few years I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way. Joining a management team with a wealth of Wessex League and local football experience was a no brainier for me, their vision to develop the players at the club through quality coaching session’s fits perfectly with my coaching philosophy. Working with Jamie and Thomo on the training ground, we are bringing in professional practices to take the club to the next level, this includes performance analysis thanks to VEO (video footage), psychological techniques and player plans to improve game day performance and player confidence.
I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way.
It has been one of the strangest prepre seasons I have ever run, training in small socially distanced bubbles with no contact play definitely posed a challenge for the coaching staff and club. The players adapted well and committed fully to the challenging situation. We focused on the technical side of the game and the quality of our ball work and movement movemen until a relax in government rules allowed contact play. The managers put in place an extremely challenging pre-season season fixture list which tested the squad physically and mentally, putting them in great shape for the season start on the 5th. We have a great at squad at the club that are all keen to learn and improve, and a very strong Swifts squad with a few youngsters knocking at the door of the first team. Our focus now switches to the Wessex Division One campaign and making sure we start in the right way. An excellent 2 nil win away at Newport in our opener is just reward for everyone's efforts during preseason. We are hoping to build some momentum and get into that winning habit against Petersfield, they will obviously be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat so we are anticipating a highly competitive game.

STEVE HARVEY The League is saddened to hear of the death of the Hamworthy United’s Steve Harvey. His interest in football probably began with his Dad and Grandad who used to run a local team called St Hellier Athletic. It is not known if Steve actually played for his Dad’s side, or not in his playing days. He also became and still is an A.F.C.Wimbledon Supporter, yes there are some.
The Hammers did try to get him to join the Club, but at that stage he was not ready to do so, but he did later accept an offer to become a Director of Poole Town FC. He then joined HUFC as Chairman for a while and then went to Wimbone Town as a Director.
Steve soon got involved in the local football after moving down to Dorset. He then went on to manage Corfe Mullen F.C in the Dorset Saturday League playing on a piece of ground owned by the Wessex Water Company which he turned into a football pitch.
Steve returned to Hamworthy United when it was going through a very tough period due to several members of the Committee having retired, or had left the Club. It was in serious danger of folding through lack of volunteers. He steadied the ship and together with the then President David Manuel threw himself into the planning and building of the new clubhouse. However, Steve not only oversaw the building of it, but spent hours doing a lot of the work himself.
Almost single handed he maintained the pitch as well as running the team. After a while this became too much, and so they returned to playing at the Rec. Steve went on to manage Lytchett Red Triangle and Bournemouth Sports before deciding to quit managing.
Steve had a clear vision of where he wanted to take the Club, but had to resign due to his fatal condition. There is no doubt without Steve Harvey’s hard work and drive, Hamworthy United would be all the poorer, making him a True Hamworthy Legend.
LEAGUE ROUND-UP After a series of disappointing results AFC Portchester have parted ways with Manager Mick Catlin and Assistant Lee Molyneaux. Applications for the new role have already been invited, and there has been plenty of interest, Chairman Paul Kelly has already received a large number of applications but he is urging anyone interested in the role to email their application in as soon as possible.
Marty Wallace has been installed as interim manager ahead of the game yesterday against Blackfield & Langley, he’ll be assisted by the rest of the first team coaching staff and under23s manager Mark Dugan.

KEEP AN EYE ON...
JACK ODAM Odam is the Town’s current top scorer so is without doubt one to keep an eye on. Previously with Totton & Eling in 2012-13 2012 season, where he made 8 starts and 1 substitute appearance, scoring just the one goal. Odam was next at Lymington Town for just over 3 seasons and making over 60 appearances during that spell and amassing 20 goals as well. He joined Romsey towards the end of the 2017-18 2017 season, but the following season he hit the ground running by scoring 27 goals in 36 starts in all competitions. He made just one appearance last season but has started well this season with a goal in the season opener, a 2-1 1 victory at home to New Milton. He was on target again in the following match, match away at Whitchurch United. The Town won 4-1 1 at Longmeadow. Longmeadow Odam made it three goals in three appearances when he scored in their 2-1 1 win at Premier side Fleet Town in the League Cup. His goal scoring run was broken though in the next game, in the FA Vase victory over Selsey. @AndoverNSfc |

Following relegation from the Wessex Premier, the Streets’ tough start to 2019-20 – a 1-1 home draw with US Portsmouth – caused a little anxiety amongst fans, but the Street then went on a 3 game winning run, which included a fine 4-2 victory at Love Lane, against Petersfield Town. A climb into the promotion places began, there were a couple of setbacks along the way and after a 1-1 draw with Hythe & Dibden and a 2-1 defeat away at Laverstock & Ford a short while later. Most fans knew a run of winning results was required to get back into the Wessex Premier. A win at Newport IOW kick started a
winning run that would propel the Street into the top 2. After the win on the Island, the Street faced Romsey Town at home. Ilyas Warshow was making a rare start upfront in place of the absent Luke Hooper, but it was Jason Silver that opened the scoring for the Street on 16 minutes. The crowd of 87 at Foxcotte Park were hoping to see further goals to warm them up on a cold late November evening, they had to wait until the 62nd minute when Warshow doubled the lead and then hit his second nine minutes later to make it 3-0. Romsey replied with what turned out to be a consolation goal through substitute Matthew Page on the restart but the Shane Lock raced clear to finish with ease in the 75th minute to make the score 4-1. Warshow wasn’t finished though and he completed his hat-trick 7 minutes from time when he coolly rounded the keeper to score. The Street would win a further 10 matches in a row and the run would end with a 0-0 draw at home against Alton, which turned out to be their last game before the pandemic hit. Romsey would lose to Bemerton 5-2 before hitting 5 themselves against Fawley AFC. Their season prematurely ended with 3-0 defeat at home to Andover Town.

Danny Dolan signed me from Team Solent and since then I’ve enjoyed playing for him as he is a natural winner. I also got the same feeling from John when I had my Zoom meeting with them both pre-season. The set up at Andover New Street is excellent and the players have been really welcoming.
I feel that Matt Scott could play at Southern League level. As a centre half he has the attributes and desire that would fit in well at a higher standard of football. Good in the air, strong, reads the game g well. Locky is also technically a great player so would have to say him as well but lots of players in the current squad could easily play higher.
What was your biggest motivation to get back fully fit and playing in the starting 11 following your injury? My biggest motivation to come back from injury was mostly to prove to myself that I could still compete at Wessex level. Coming back from a major knee op was hard but taking a step down to local football was not competitive/ challenging enough for me which is why I trained hard to get my fitness levels back to where they used to be.

Where do you feel is your favourite position within the squad? I am quite a versatile player and have on o occasions covered in between the sticks when needed! However, my strongest position is centre mid. I love nothing more than mixing it up in the middle, battling, winning the ball back and starting off attacks. Team bonding in a karaoke bar... you have to o do a duet...what song would you pick and who would you sing it with? Jake Curtis can hold a tune so I’d probably do a duet with him. After my initiation song, I’d probably go for a crowd-pleaser, crowd Angels by Robbie Williams is always a winner.

In the dressing room, who is the: Funniest? Most serious? Most untidy? Loudest? Funniest – Gunner Yates. He has so much energy and is certainly one of the biggest characters I’ve shared a dressing room with. The journey home from IOW was also very interesting with Gunner on the bus.
no.10 I’ve seen in terms of playing between the lines and he had really quick feet. Reminds me a lot of Bruno Fernandes for Utd.
Most Serious – I would probably have to say myself. I tend to get myself thinking about the game before getting changed and am often thinking about my jobs and responsibilities for the team. Untidy – Quite a few players like to cut up their socks which I must say I haven’t seen done at any other club! Loudest – Dockers is quite vocal in the changing rooms. He is one of the natural leaders on the pitch and this is also the case in the dressing room. His knowledge of the game is excellent and when he talks, people listen. Who is the best player you have played with? And why? The best player I have ever played with is probably a player called Steve Brewer in Cornwall. I believe he still plays for Falmouth Town so maybe one day I’ll come up against him in the FA Cup/Vase! He was the best

Danny Dolan signed me from Team Solent and since then I’ve enjoyed playing for him as he is a natural winner. I also got the same feeling from John. The setup at Andover New Street is excellent.
What is your aim for this season?
Who is better – Messi or Ronaldo?
I really want to play my part and help New Street get back to the Wessex Prem. A talented group of players that should be playing in the higher division!
Ronaldo all day long. Absolute powerhouse, stronger in the air, both feet as strong as each other and can win matches and tournaments on his own.
Favourite pair of boots that you’ve worn?
Costa or Starbucks?
David Beckham White and Silver Adidas Predators when I was 12... still remember opening them to this day! Who is your favourite New Street Player? Mario Nurse... to still have the fitness, technique and talent that he does is admirable. A huge amount of respect for Mario.
Costa. Better coffee and they pay their taxes! That’s important for me as a Bank Manager! Your football idol? Football idol is definitely Ryan Giggs. Although I’m not a winger, he was the most exciting player to watch growing up and I always wanted to be like him. The only problems were that I was never quick and am right footed!
THE TADLEY OLD DAYS WITH THE GAFFER...
>>> Who is the funniest in the dressing room?
Who is your best mate in football?
Connor is funny, he’s non-stop! Gunner is up there with him and he’s loud, so loud! To be fair it’s a great vibe in the dressing room at the moment, it’s great to be involved in it.
Best mate in football… I have a few but Brett Denham would probably be the person that I’ve played with the longest. We always sat next to each other in the changing rooms at Tadley and still travel to games together now. I’ve also provided a fair few assists for him over the years so I’m sure he’s grateful for that haha! Who is the best player you have played against? And why? The best player I’ve played against would be Anton Ferdinand. This was way back in youth team football but Rio had just broken in to the West Ham team and everyone knew that Anton Ferdinand was the next big thing at West Ham Academy. He didn’t disappoint nt and was about a foot taller than everyone else at the age of 12.

What do you eat before a game? Describe your pre match preparation? Always eat 3 hours before a game and will always involve a bottle of Lucozade original. I try and avoid heavy foods/pastry etc as they can make you feel slow after you’ve eaten them. Pasta, Jacket Potatoes etc are always good. What football team do you support? And why? For my sins I’m a Man Utd fan. Living in Basingstoke was always going to make supporting them challenging but my dad was a big Utd fan and used to take me to the th games any time he could. In your opinion, when you go to the cinema which arm rest is yours? This depends on what side of the cinema you are sitting on I’d say. I’d always feel tempted to try and lean to whichever armrest was more central.

MY STREET
THIS SEASON WE ARE ASKING FOR SUPPORTERS TO GO DOWN MEMORY LANE AND ANSWER A SELECTION OF QUESTIONS BASED ON THEIR TIME FOLLOWING THE STREET. JACK WEATHERITT SHARES HIS VIEWS AND SELECTS HIS ALL TIME FAVOURITE STREET XI TO TAKE ON THE BEST!
Name: Jack Weatheritt Age: 28 Where do you watch games from: I don’t have a set position, so it varies game by game. First game: The first game I watched was the club’s first venture into the FA Cup against Romsey Town in August 2018. First memory: The impressive 4-0 victory over Romsey Town in the FA Cup. Zach Neve got a couple of goals and Luke Neller got the last one.
The worst match: The worst match for me was going out of the quarter-final quarter of the Hampshire cup against nst Moneyfields last season. I don’t think we performed to our high standards that night. Best Individual performance by a player: There have been some great performances from the games I’ve watched over the last three seasons. Shane Lock, Max Allen, Gunner Yates, Matt Scott and Alex Dockree are just a few names that have put in some wonderful performances. Favourite Street kit: The home green and black stripes. The he Nike one we have currently is the best one. one
Best goal seen: The best goal would have to be Shane Lock’s second goal against Portsmouth in the Hampshire Cup. Best match witnessed: Again that would have to be against Portsmouth, it wasn’t obviously against their first team but it was a massive occasion for the club with over 500 people in attendance, including Mr Pompey and his bell! The match itself was a great game to watch, although it didn’t start too well when Portsmouth scored after 2 minutes but the Street rallied and won the game 2-1.
Favourite All-Time Player: Shane Lock is my favourite player. He works tirelessly for the team and gets from box to box. He also has loads of skill and can also supply and score goals. I love New Street because... because it’s a big family and everyone helps one another. It’s a great club to be a part of. JACK’S ALL TIME NEW STREET XI: XI GK: ALEX THOMPSON
Outstanding goalkeeper, made many quality saves during the time I watched him play. Was made a speciality of saving penalties, especially in shootouts. It’s great to see him still at the club, passing on his knowledge to the other keepers as Head of Goalkeeping.
RW: SHANE LOCK
His name would be first on the team-sheet team every time. He never let anyone down and would always give you that little bit extra. Has that ability to turn a game in your favour.
CM: ALEX DOCKREE
He’s another great leader on the field, always talking and encouraging others. Also has great aerial ability and is a danger at set-pieces. set Great strength when on the ball.
CM: CALLUM SWEENEY
One of the best st players ability wise to have played at Foxcotte Park. A great player, who could use either foot, also knew where the goal was and scored some impressive free-kicks. free Also was exceptional from the penalty spot.
KEEPER | ALEX THOMPSON
RB: LEWIS ALDERMAN
Lewis was a strong defender for the Street and Mr Reliable. He made the art of defending easy as he read the game so well.
LB: MARK KEOGH
He loves a tackle, very strong and physical. He always gave you 100% and never let you down. Keogh was also a great vocal support both on and off the pitch. It was a shame that he was out for most of last season through injury.
CB: MATT SCOTT
Top quality centre back. Has a never say die attitude while being a rock in central defence. He made the difference to the team when we gained promotion to the Wessex Premier.
CB: JAMIE COLEMAN (C)
He was a great captain for the team, he was also a great defensive player for the side, whether that was holding midfield or at centre back, played out of his skin against Portsmouth in the Hampshire Cup.
LM: GUNNER YATES
The wing play and and shooting power of Gunner was sorely missed when we were in the Wessex Premier. Was and still is at his best when 1v1 against a full abck and loves to cut inside and go for goal.
ST: JAZZ BEAVIS
Has had a number of spells with the club, great feet and seems to be able to get out of any tight situation on the pitch.
ST: ZACH NEVE
A natural goal scorer, he was amazing for the Street during the Wessex One promotion season a few years ago. Played a key part in that success and scored some important goals during his spell at the club.
MANAGER: JOHN SMITH
There is only been the two managers during my time at New Street but John has been the most successful manager for a while at the club. During the Wessex One success and also near the end last season were the most enjoyable times at the e club watching the team play.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street were defeated at home against a strong Alton side 4-2, ten days ago despite taking an early lead. Danny Urry was adjudged to have been fouled when he was shaping up to shoot, just ten minutes into the first half. Urry took the spot kick and sent Alton keeper Kieron Greene the wrong way. Before that the Street were dealt a blow when captain Matt Scott went off injured in the 7th minute and was replaced by Kai Sterne, with Max Allen dropping back into defence and Scott Kinge moving back into central midfield. Alton equalised through right winger Luke Perkins who hit an unstoppable effort across the goal and in off the far post. The Brewers took the lead just four minutes after halftime when Liam Knight scored. But the Street immediately got back on level terms through Brett Denham. Alton re-took the lead in the 62nd minute through Scott Sandersen and the same player made it 4-2 when he met a high cross from Perkins to head past Sean O’Brien to secure the points for the Brewers.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street suffered heartbreak when a dramatic injury time equaliser from Fawley denied the Street taking home all three points after dominating the second half. The first half was fairly uneventful with few opportunities at either end. Mikey Davis having the Streets best opportunity when he broke free on the left but fired wired of the target. The second half started in the pouring rain but the Street took the lead five minutes into the second half when Scott Kinge rose highest to head towards goal, only to see his effort pushed away by the Fawley keeper, straight into Shane Lock’s path for him to score into the empty net. The Street went onto to create a hatful for chances but couldn’t get the second goal to secure the win, despite hitting the woodwork and new signing Cameron Rohart-Brown going close with two freekicks. Fawley offered very little threat in the second half until in injury time they forced a corner and with their keeper up in the box the ball found its way into the bottom corner and the points shared on a miserable afternoon.

THE CLINIC
PETE TUNNEY Good evening and welcome to tonight’s match against Romsey Town.
Symptoms
From time to time I will look at different types of injuries that can occur on the football pitch and how best to treat and recover from them. This week I’m looking at OsgoodSchlatter’s Disease.
Treatment
This is a condition where the attachment of the patella tendon to the tibia becomes inflamed. The tendon attachment is situated over a growth plate of the tibia. Excessive use of the quadriceps muscles will stress the tendon attachment and growth plate, producing inflammation. The cause is likely to be over use, and is most common in active boys aged between 10 and 16. Generally this condition does not occur after growth ceases.
Pain during and after activity at the tendon attachment. Local swelling and tenderness.
Rest. This will allow inflammation and pain to settle. Modified activity – avoid movements which reproduce pain. Ice. Apply ice for 10 – 15 minutes every two hours. Stretch. Begin stretching exercises to increase the length of the quadriceps muscles. These should be performed regularly and within the pain-free pain range of movement. To perform this stretch, balance on the unaffected leg, pulling the heel of your other leg towards tour bottom. Keep ep your knees close together and your hips pushed forwards. Hold the stretch for the 30 seconds and repeat five times. Returning to activity should be a gradual process. This condition generally heals spontaneously, but problems can recur if the tendon is stressed further. Enjoy the game.

LEAGUE LOOK THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE Turning to Saturday’s games, the weather perhaps was not as bad as initially feared although losing ten games was probably more than enough. In the Buildbase FA Vase we’ll work through alphabetically by hosts so kick off in East London where Petersfield Town drew one each with a goal from Bailey Newbury before conceding an equaliser; but progressing 3-0 on penalties against Clapton.
Just a bit west New Milton Town and Clanfield 85 shared two goals after 90 minutes with the hosts’ goal coming from Tyrrell Sampson. A 4-1 4 penalty shoot-out out win decided by the aforementioned aforementio player. No joy for Ringwood in Devon though as Newton Abbot Spurs won 3-1 1 after Ryan Hamm had given our side an early lead. Moving now to the Premier Division where only two games survived. On the Isle of Wight Christchurch ran in three without reply against a Cowes Sports, goals from Ash Pope, Billy Walker and Luke Delaney, whilst AFC Portchester under interim manager Marty Wallace’s guidance defeated visitors Blackfield & Langley by the same score. Oscar Johnston, Steve Ramsey and Lee Wort on target there.
Despite coming in at the break ahead thanks to a Nick Yeomans goal, Whitchurch United conceded two against Clevedon Town to go down 2-1. The Western League also put paid to Newport IOW with a best of seven win for Cribbs. Jordan Browne with a double and Connor Kelly for the Isle of Wight side. Fleet Town perhaps surprisingly went down to a 2-0 home defeat against Littlehampton Town, but there was a good win for Hamworthy United over Ilfracombe Town. Four goals and four scorers on the score sheet- Lee Francis, Dan Cann, Eddie Hodge and Matt Neale putting the Hammers through. A similar scoreline for Bashley, at Keynsham Town. A Harry McGrath hat trick steering the New Forest side home, with Harry Morgan also on target. Lymington went down by the odd goal in three against Tavistock with Jason Brooks getting a consolation for the hosts.
Just three games in Division One, and again we start across the Solent. East Cowes Vics and Bemerton Heath Harlequins shared six goals with Jimmi Burton, Jayden Yates and Ji Nash on target for the hosts with Justin Bennett bagging a brace for the Harlequins. quins. Ronan Clancy also netting for the visitors. Alton hit a 2-0 0 win thanks to strikes from Jack Fowler on the stroke of half time and George Bowerman midway through the second period not long after arriving as a substitute. In the other game played Andover Ando Town beat Downton in a best of three contestcontest Brendan Holmes and Tom Pattison sandwiching a Tom Moseley strike for the Robins.

SWIFTS UPDATE The Swifts found themselves in cup action on Wednesday night against South Wonston with the Foxcotte Park pitch looking like a carpet and with the added drizzle creating a real zip. The home side started with a bang, with Charlie Rodgers playing in a more advanced role, curling a beautiful shot past the keeper. 1 then became 2 when Liam Dufall spectacular effort cannoned in off the post. The home side looked comfortable during the first half, creating chances and looking the more likely to add to the score sheet with Ryan Morgans & Marcus Tyler both came close. The away side started the second half quickly with a well taken finish to set up what would a thrilling second half. The away side stayed on the front foot and looked to try and break down the strong and resolute Swifts defence. The Swifts then restored the 2 goal lead with Liam Dufall’s second of the night, with a strong drive into the corner of the goal! The away side with nothing to lose threw everything they had at the
Swifts defence and finally bundled in their second of the evening, making the score line 3-2 2 with not long left on the clock. Callum Buck stole the ball in the middle of the park with a strong tackle and started to run at the South Wonston back line, jinking past one and creating space outside the box to unleash the goal of the game, with the ball flying into the roof of net. Absolute rocket. With not long left and the score line at 4-2, 2, you would have thought that would be done and dusted. There was still some late drama to come with The Swifts conceding a penaltyy which was slotted away with keeper Mike Horne unlucky not to save. The game ended 4-3 4 with a dramatic night up at the Foxcotte and the t Swifts into the next round of the cup. The Swifts faced Wednesday opponents South Wonston on Saturday, Saturday looking to make it another victory and 3 points towards the promotion push. It didn’t take long for The Swifts to carry on from there Wednesday night with the home sides first touch of the ball, was picking the ball out their own net as Harry Lawton finished from a superb b cross from in-form in winger Liam Duffal. The he game then settled down with the t Swifts controlling most of the play and creating chances. The home side looked dangerous on the break causing a few nervous moments at the back. The Swifts contributed to press and probe but couldn’t find the important second goal. Similarly to the first half, The Swifts created a number of good chances in the second half but failed to convert but always looked comfortable and in control of the game. The Swifts saw the game out with a clean sheet and 3 points on the road.

LADIES ANDOVER NEW STREET 2 PORTSMOUTH DEVELOPMENT 5
STREET LADIES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON AGAINST STRONG POMPEY SIDE Street ladies were left to rue a below par performance in the first half as they suffered their first defeat of the season last Sunday. After last week’s postponed game against Cowes due to a waterlogged pitch, the Street looked off the pace in the opening half against a strong Portsmouth side. Pompey were keeping possession much better than New Street and were exploiting the space on the pitch and using the ball effectively. It wasn’t long before they made it 1-0 when they were able to break through down the right hand side to score. The second goal was not long in coming as Portsmouth played a ball through the middle of the pitch and were quickly through to score and give the Street a mountain to climb.
Further goals followed before half-time half and the Street were relieved to hear the halfhalf time whistle so they could regroup at 4-0 down at the break. The second half was a complete turnaround with the Street competing against their opponents and winning the ball higher up the pitch. Nikki Barnes was pushed up front and responded with a goal that further lifted the Street. Barnes was on target again from a corner shortly later and an unlikely comeback was suddenly on. This however was denied when Portsmouth broke on the left hand side and scored to make it 5-2. 5 The Street continued to match their opponents for the remainder of the game but unable to reduce the deficit further. Manager Kyla Tobin said after the game; “We We showed great character in the second half as we didn’t compete in the first half. We did start with a different formation and maybe we shouldn’t have tried that today, but we were excellent second half. Kate Probert was outstanding in midfield, constantly winning the ball for us and making us tick in the second half.”

WORD ON THE STREET | ANDOVER NEW STREET V ROMSEY TOWN | 03.11.20

THE LAST WORD BY JON COUCH– EXECUTIVE EDITOR AT THE NON LEAGUE PAPER A journalist is only as good as their contacts book, as they say – so we at The Non-League Paper reckon we’re onto a pretty good thing. Printing a weekly paper throughout lockdown, without a ball being kicked, wasn’t easy. In fact, it was only made possible by the ‘fraternity’ – the chairmen and women, managers, players and supporters of football clubs across the land. We’re pretty lucky at The NLP. We have a loyal following and an enviable understanding with the people we represent. Yes, of course, we realise that having a relationship with the Press is in their interests but it goes beyond that. A great number of players and managers can be counted as friends and we are very proud of that.

Instead, we became very close and, although he doesn’t know it, it was he who lit the flame for my love affair with the NonNon League game. On one occasion, I remember my back page lead story falling through, leaving me high and dry an hour before deadline. In desperation, I gave George a call and explained my dilemma, asking him if he could confirm any transfer speculation to help fill the void. What he gave me was a stronger exclusive than I had originally which became a popular talking point on the terraces. terrace As in most walks of life, a working relationship requires an ‘I’ll-scratch-your‘I’ll back-if-you-scratch-mine’ mine’ thesis. George was a big advocate of this. I remember waiting outside the dressing room door for the Shots boss among a posse of TV crews and national nal journalists following a FA Cup tie with Brighton & Hove Albion in November 2000. Accepting I would probably only get a fraction of his time, I did contemplate easing his burden by slipping off and calling him later.
A conversation I had with a Step 3 manager the other day reminded me of a very special relationship I struck up with a manager as a young reporter, working on my local paper in Aldershot.
Just as I did though one of the players play came to the door and asked specifically for myself and my counterpart from the Farnham Herald to come through and speak to George in the managers’ room at the back. The face of the national guys was a picture as the two of us hustled our way through the e crowd but when we got to the manager’s changing area, there he was sat on the bench with only a small hand towel to protect his modesty!
George Borg arrived at the Recreation Ground with a high profile and a no-nonsense nature. If he wanted, he could have spat out a young whippersnapper like me.
It was probably the strangest interview I had ever carried out! To this day, I always keep an eye out on how George’s George’ Braintree Town side fare come 5pm on a Saturday. It’s a relationship which taught me so much and one I will always treasure.
