THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park to you all for today’s Sydenhams Wessex League One game between ourselves and Alton. I’d like to welcome Kevin Adair his staff and players and everyone associated with the Brewers to Foxcotte today. They have started the season well with a 4-1 victory at Downton and high scoring home wins over Andover Town and Totton & Eling. They also suffered a 5-1 defeat at early pace setters Laverstoke & Ford before and impressive 2-1 victory over US Portsmouth. They drew 11 at home to Petersfield Town on Tuesday night. Since my last notes we have drawn at home to Hythe & Dibden and also away last Tuesday night at Downton. The result against Hythe was slightly disappointing as we got the perfect start with the goal from Ally McCracken and were very much in control of the game for most of the first half.

Tuesday’ss game against Downton, we started slowly and were indebted to Sean O’Brien Brien for a couple of first class saves to keep us at 0-0 0 but from then on I thought we bossed the game and just lacked that killer touch in front of goal. We certainly felt comfortable, which was a real blow when Downton opened the scoring just after half-time half as they hadn’t really threatened us to that point. The lads rallied though and got the deserved equaliser when Lockey found the bottom corner from the left angle, just outside the box. Again we couldn’tt find that chance to win the match and had to settle for a point. We will continue to focus on the next game and take it one game at a time. Titles aren’t aren handed out in October and I’m I not interested in how other teams are performing. I’m solely focused on today’s game and winning the three points that are available to us today. Please get behind your team, let’s move forward together, up the table and here’s to celebrating some good times. Enjoy the game.

We allowed Hythe back into the game when Matt Scott was harshly penalised for handball but Wingy produced a fine save to keep out the penalty. Unfortunately we suffered a defensive lapse that brought about the equaliser and despite our best efforts had to settle for a point.

THE BOARDROOM

CHRIS WHITE Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today’s game against Alton. The Brewers come to Foxcotte Park in fine form and will be looking to build on an impressive last season before it was cut short. Our last game before lockdown was here against Alton and it was a close hard fought game and it will no doubt be similar this afternoon. Last Saturday saw us draw with a strong Hythe side, which after being a goal up felt like two points dropped. We seem to let down by silly mistakes at one end and missed opportunities at the other. On Tuesday night I thought we played well in the first half and the game could have gone either way as both teams were battling hard, unfortunately we were caught out with their goal but showed some resilience to get back into the game with a great equaliser.

Away from the first team, the Swifts continue theirr fine start to the season with a 4-3 3 victory here over South Wonston in the cup a couple of weeks ago, which was a great advert for the Hampshire League. They then continued their pursuit of leaders Moneyfields with a narrow 1-0 1 victory away against South Wonston. onston. Harry Lawton scoring early on and despite trying to secure the victory with another goal, doing enough to earn the three points point that see them in second place in the league table. The newly formed ladies ladie side are also second in their league and after an impressive opening two 5-0 5 victories, they had a tough defeat at home last Sunday to a strong Portsmouth development side. They can take pride in their second half performance and more than matched their opponents in the second forty-five. forty After today’ss match, the first team travel to Fawley next Saturday and then have a local derby against Whitchurch hitchurch United here at Foxcotte Park on Tuesday 27th 27 October with a 7.45pm kick-off. Enjoy today’s game and I wish you all a safe journey home and I hope to see once again soon.

As we see all the time at all levels football is a game where current form and momentum play a major part, so let’s hope we can get the right result today and start another season defining run like we did last year.

COACHES CORNER

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome to our first home game of the season. These are my first programme notes for the new season and both myself and JC will look to give you insight from the coach’s perspective this season. Having been out of the game for a few years I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way. Joining a management team with a wealth of Wessex League and local football experience was a no brainier for me, their vision to develop the players at the club through quality coaching session’s fits perfectly with my coaching philosophy. Working with Jamie and Thomo on the training ground, we are bringing in professional practices to take the club to the next level, this includes performance analysis thanks to VEO (video footage), psychological techniques and player plans to improve game day performance and player confidence.

I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way.

It has been one of the strangest prepre seasons I have ever run, training in small socially distanced bubbles with no contact play definitely posed a challenge for the coaching staff and club. The players adapted well and committed fully to the challenging situation. We focused on the technical side of the game and the quality of our ball work and movement movemen until a relax in government rules allowed contact play. The managers put in place an extremely challenging pre-season season fixture list which tested the squad physically and mentally, putting them in great shape for the season start on the 5th. We have a great at squad at the club that are all keen to learn and improve, and a very strong Swifts squad with a few youngsters knocking at the door of the first team. Our focus now switches to the Wessex Division One campaign and making sure we start in the right way. An excellent 2 nil win away at Newport in our opener is just reward for everyone's efforts during preseason. We are hoping to build some momentum and get into that winning habit against Petersfield, they will obviously be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat so we are anticipating a highly competitive game.

STEVE HARVEY The League is saddened to hear of the death of the Hamworthy United’s Steve Harvey. His interest in football probably began with his Dad and Grandad who used to run a local team called St Hellier Athletic. It is not known if Steve actually played for his Dad’s side, or not in his playing days. He also became and still is an A.F.C.Wimbledon Supporter, yes there are some.

The Hammers did try to get him to join the Club, but at that stage he was not ready to do so, but he did later accept an offer to become a Director of Poole Town FC. He then joined HUFC as Chairman for a while and then went to Wimbone Town as a Director.

Steve soon got involved in the local football after moving down to Dorset. He then went on to manage Corfe Mullen F.C in the Dorset Saturday League playing on a piece of ground owned by the Wessex Water Company which he turned into a football pitch.

Steve returned to Hamworthy United when it was going through a very tough period due to several members of the Committee having retired, or had left the Club. It was in serious danger of folding through lack of volunteers. He steadied the ship and together with the then President David Manuel threw himself into the planning and building of the new clubhouse. However, Steve not only oversaw the building of it, but spent hours doing a lot of the work himself.

Almost single handed he maintained the pitch as well as running the team. After a while this became too much, and so they returned to playing at the Rec. Steve went on to manage Lytchett Red Triangle and Bournemouth Sports before deciding to quit managing.

Steve had a clear vision of where he wanted to take the Club, but had to resign due to his fatal condition. There is no doubt without Steve Harvey’s hard work and drive, Hamworthy United would be all the poorer, making him a True Hamworthy Legend.

LEAGUE ROUND-UP There’s a new Managerial team at Portland United, Franklyn Clarke is the new Manager with Sam Poole named as his Assistant. It was anticipated they would be on the bench for the visit of Amesbury Town to the New Grove on Saturday, the pair come from Dorchester Town, where Clarke was Captain. They could also play for Portland this season with Gary Bailey and Mark Carter stepping aside after their interim spell in charge. The club have accelerated their plan to bring more young talent to the club, whilst retaining the core of experienced players. WORD ON THE STREET | ANDOVER NEW STREET V ALTON | 17.10.20

Following relegation from the Wessex Premier, the Streets’ tough start to 2019-20 – a 1-1 home draw with US Portsmouth – caused a little anxiety amongst fans, but the Street then went on a 3 game winning run, which included a fine 4-2 victory at Love Lane, against Petersfield Town. A climb into the promotion places began, there were a couple of setbacks along the way and after a 1-1 draw with Hythe & Dibden and a 2-1 defeat away at Laverstock & Ford a short while later. Most fans knew a run of winning results was required to get back into the Wessex Premier.

winning run that would propel the Street into the top 2. Further victories continued with Romsey beaten at Foxcotte 5-1, 5 a close seven goal thriller was played out the following Saturday against Fawley with the Street edging it 4-3.. A local derby victory away at Whitchurch, despite losing Jazz Beavis to a red card, kept the Street on the heels of US Portsmouth. By the time March arch came around there were still a large amount of games to be played but top spot was very much in sight. A late fight back ensured the three points in early March against Petersfield Town before a narrow 1-0 0 victory at home to New Milton was secured. The next visitors to Foxcotte were Alton,, who were also having a great season and still had promotion aspirations of their own and were up to 6th place, 4 points off a promotion spot prior to playing the Street. The match was a cagey affair with both teams creating few chances but in truth Alton on having the better of it. Gerson Ger Ramos and Luke Hooper had a frustrating afternoon and even the introduction of Reece Rusher had little impact, with Alton missing a couple of chances near the end. Both sides had to settle set for a point, which proved to be worthless in the end as 48 hours later the League was suspended due to the global pandemic.

PROGRAMME EDITOR KEVIN PIPKIN DELVES INTO HIS ARCHIVES... The Street got the 2017-18 season off to the perfect start with a fine 2-1 victory over Alton at Foxcotte Park. Zach Neve was a constant threat upfront but it was two early goals from Callum Sweeney and Gunner Yates in the opening 20 minutes that got the win. This was despite losing Jamie Pollard to a red card in the second half.

Getting forward and getting the opposition going backwards. I like running with the ball, taking people on, trying to get goals, trying to get assists. Defensive work obviously you’ve got to do, but no one really likes defensive work! How has it been waiting for your chance to get into the first team? Do you do anything proactive to get the attention of the manager? I didn’t expect it if I’m honest but it has always been the goal since I came to the club, just kept my head down in pre season and was myself, will just continue to do that now and hopefully help the team whenever I can, I’m buzzing to be a part of it. 34

I soon oon calmed down as soon as the game started but getting the goal so early on helped a lot. It wasn’t asn’t ideal going down to 10 but I felt like we were w always on top and just had to grind it out. All the lads were buzzing afterwards, we all put in a proper shift and it couldn’t have been a better debut for myself and more importantly coming home with the 3 points.

Who do you think is the best football player of all time? Lionel Messi. Which player in the current squad could play in the Southern League and why? Danny Urry. The lad has got a bit, would hate to play against him. Team bonding in a karaoke bar... you have to do a duet...what song would you pick and who would you sing it with? GETTING INVOLVED IN THE SET PIECES...

>>> What do you consider the best goal you’ve ever scored? I would have to say that it was against Moneyfields at home on my debut for Swifts. That’s a hard ard one to answer because I’ve only nly played a few games. games Who is the bestt player you have played with? And why? That’s another hard question to answer. Probably have to say Adam Bourner, he can play with both feet and can do it all. Who is the best player you have played against? And why? Callum Slattery, nobody could get near him for 90 minutes. MY STREET

THIS SEASON WE ARE ASKING FOR SUPPORTERS TO GO DOWN MEMORY LANE AND ANSWER A SELECTION OF QUESTIONS BASED ON THEIR TIME FOLLOWING THE STREET. MARTIN TOBIN SHARES HIS VIEWS AND SELECTS HIS ALL TIME FAVOURITE STREET XI TO TAKE ON THE BEST!

Name: Martin Tobin Age: 59 Where do you watch games from: Mainly from behind the goal, but sometimes from the main stand. First game: The first game I watched would have been up at London Road, it was a long time ago. They didn’t have their own ground or clubhouse like we have now. They would play on pitch number 2 and Mick O’Connor was manager at the time.

The worst match: The worst match for me was the he game against Cowes I mentioned earlier. It was freezing cold day and it was touch and go with the pitch conditions. The atmosphere was very poor, nobody wanted to play, even the referee wasn’t wasn very keen but the game went ahead and there wasn’t wasn much football otball and a lot of arguments going on during and after the game. game

First memory: Playing for the Street and going to East Cowes on a cold early January game in the Hampshire League, which we won 1-0 but nobody wanted to play as it was so cold!

Best Individual performance by a player: Best performance I’ve ve seen was by Dave Bird. He was a towering centre half at New Street. He was captain of the team and he was the master and just superb and drive the team really well. He would w always give 110 %. He was Mr New Street at the time but it would be close between him and Dave Selby, who was as hard as nails in the midfield.

Best goal seen: The best goal for me was Ily Warshow’s winner in the North Hants Cup final a couple of years ago against Alresford Town at the Camrose Basingtoke. There was good build up to that goal and young Ily took the goal well.

Favourite Street kit: The home green and black stripes. I love all the green and black kits. Although its important portant from a financial f point of view to have a sponsor, for as long as the kit is green and black then thats the most important thing to me. .

Best match witnessed: It would have to be my last game for New Street A. Nick Richmond was manager of the side. I think I was about 35 or 36. I was playing at the back and we were underdogs against Wallop. We won the game 2-1, we found out the Wallop side had booked the following day off work so they could celebrate that night. It never happened as we beat them and we played tremendously well and with so much spirit and character. We were fortunate on a few occasions but we deserved that as the team were absolutely brilliant. That will always stick in my memory as it was my final appearance in the green and black.

Favourite All-Time Time Player: That a tough one to answer but I’d d have to go for Dave Selby. Selby Again his attitude was top class and he wanted to win. He gave gav you everything he had when he stepped over that white line onto the pitch. To me, he would always be first on the team sheet. I could name a few others including Dave ave Bird, Bird Steve Brown, Dave Murphy and Sean Rodgers. I love New Street because... because it’s provided me with the opportunity, and ambition to be involved with a great club that’s that moving in the right direction. It has a fantastic set of people working within the club and its helping move the club forward.

MARTIN’S ALL TIME NEW STREET XI: GK: IAN BARTON

RW: ALAN KENNEDY

RB: DANNY FIELD

CM: DAVE MURPHY

Always reliable, fantastic goalkeeper. Great shot stopper. He had great hands and unbelievable distribution. Was a great organiser of the defence and talker in the side.

I like Danny Field, I think he’s brilliant. He’s reliable. Comfortable on the ball and very good with his distribution. Again he’s a talkative player. He doesn’t waste passes and is a great tackler.

Class player, very good on the ball. Had loads of energy. Provided and created chances for the sides he played for. And he could also score goals by cutting in from the right wing.

I grew up with Dave and played football with him. Very commanding and very good on the ball. He was solid, He was the midfield general in any side he played for.

CM: DAVE SELBY

As I’ve ve said he was my favourite all time player I can’tt really leave him out can i? His attitude during the game was exceptional and that desire to win would make him instrumental to my dream team!

LM: GUNNER YATES

RIGHT BACK | DANNY FIELD

LB: PAUL REIDY

Brilliant on the ball, great distribution and hardly gave the ball away. He was a clever player and worked hard for the team.

CB: STEVE BROWN (C)

Top quality centre back. Outstanding when he played for the club. Would dominate a game and is a great player, especially when you consider the difficult times the side had when he played.

CB: DAVE BIRD

As I mentioned earlier, he was a towering centre back and formed an excellent partnership with Steve Brown. Hardly anything would get past those two on the pitch.. An excellent captain and his leadership skills were second to none. I wouldn’t give him the title of “Mr New Street” for nothing!

I like Gunner. I think Gunner on his day is the best I’ve ve ever seen in that position and in this league. Ability wise he is unbelievable and if he comes on he can change hange a game and certainly influence a match with his wing play and ability to take a man on.

ST: SEAN ROGERS

Big, strong lad. He was excellent in the air and could hold the ball up really well. He would score goals for fun and he’ss an excellent striker.

ST: VINNIE RUSHER

Vinnie had that ability to destroy defenders. He could take defenders on and fantastic f ability to cross the ball. He’ss shooting skills were also exceptional and would always hit the target.

MANAGER: MICK O’CONNOR

Great manager, he was really good with the players. He knew football all and had been around the game for a long time and at the top level. He always treated the players with respect but also let them know what he expected from them at the same time. He was never afraid of talking to players in the right manner. A very nice guy as well.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street had to settle for a draw with one of last season’s fellow promotion challengers Hythe & Dibden last Saturday after taking an early first half lead. Both sides were coming into the game with similar form, with only one point separating the two sides in the early league table. The Street got off to a dream start inside the first minute when Ally McCracken latched onto the loose ball inside the Hythe penalty area and fired past Steve Hodder, the Hythe keeper. Hythe had the opportunity to equalise when Matt Scott was penalised for handball early in the second half, but Chris Wing, replacing the suspended Sean O’Brien made an impressive block and was quick to pounce on the loose ball to preserve the Street’s lead. Hythe were level shortly later when hesitation in the Street defence allowed Roberto Avila to sneak in to equalise. Both sides then tried to force a winner but had to settle for a point each. STORY OF THE MATCH The Street were left to rue missed opportunities as they had to settle for a point on their midweek trip to Downton last Tuesday evening. Downton started the first half brightly and the Street were grateful to keeper Sean O’Brien, who made three key saves in the opening twenty minutes. The Street grew into the game and Ally McCracken was denied by Taylor in the Downton goal and Danny Urry was also denied by Taylor. Brett Denham then had the ball in the net but was denied by the off-side flag as the Street upped the tempo before half-time. The Street again looked in control in the second half until Downton broke the deadlock on 56 minutes when Sam Howe beat the off-side trap and squared the ball for TJ Moseley to score from 3 yards. It was left for Shane Lock to provide an equaliser for the Street as he drove home a shot from the corner of the box into the far corner. The game was then end to end with both sides creating chances to win the game but both had to settle for a point.

EARLY O’BRIEN SAVES ENSURE POINT AT DOWNTON! By Kevin Pipkin

Street keeper Sean O’Brien was happy to contribute as he made several crucial saves in the opening half of Tuesday’s match, in their comeback draw with Downton. The 32 year-old returned to the side after missing last Saturday’s match with Hythe & Dibden through suspension. The former Tadley Calleva keeper maintained his impressive start to the season with another fine display. “I felt we started a little bit slowly on Tuesday.” O’Brien said, “I was just happy to be back in the side and making a contribution to team.” O’Brien was called in action early denying TJ Moseley with a fine save and also a crucial block, when the Downton striker was able to break through the

Street defence. He also made another key save when Downton winger Laurence Larbi went clean through but was again denied by the Street keeper. O’Brien added; “After that initial slow start, I thought we were well on top. Both Scoots (Matt Scott) and Jakey Curtis kept the defence well marshalled and squeezed the defence line up. We were in control of the game and most of the possession and created a few chances. “It was disappointing to concede the goal early in the second half but the lads have rallied and Lockey has scored an excellent equaliser. It was a tight even game and both sides might look at it as 2 points dropped. “From my point of view, I’m disappointed to not keep a clean sheet as apart from the early chances, they didn’t really carve us open,” he said. “As you’ve seen, even after they scored we had the ball, we have the quality to contribute to this league in any way we want to do. We just have to keep doing it.”

THE CLINIC

PETE TUNNEY Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Alton. From time to time I will look at different types of injuries that can occur on the football pitch and how best to treat and recover from them. This week I’m looking at OsgoodSchlatter’s Disease. This is a condition where the attachment of the patella tendon to the tibia becomes inflamed. The tendon attachment is situated over a growth plate of the tibia. Excessive use of the quadriceps muscles will stress the tendon attachment and growth plate, producing inflammation. The cause is likely to be over use, and is most common in active boys aged between 10 and 16. Generally this condition does not occur after growth ceases.

Symptoms Pain during and after activity at the tendon attachment. Local swelling elling and tenderness. Treatment Rest. This will allow inflammation and pain to settle. Modified activity – avoid movements which reproduce pain. Ice. Apply ice for 10 – 15 minutes every two hours. Stretch. Begin stretching exercises to increase the length ength of the quadriceps muscles. These should be performed regularly and within the pain-free pain range of movement. To perform this stretch, balance on the unaffected leg, pulling the heel of your other leg towards tour bottom. Keep your knees close together togeth and your hips pushed forwards. Hold the stretch for the 30 seconds and repeat five times. Returning to activity should be a gradual process. This condition generally heals spontaneously, but problems can recur if the tendon is stressed further. Enjoy the game.

LEAGUE LOOK THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE The League took second place in terms of fixtures but takes first place in the Round Up with six games spread across the two Divisions. Seven fixtures were scheduled but the Premier Division meeting between Shaftesbury and Alresford was postponed due to Covid related problems. The League took second place in terms of fixtures but takes first place in the Round Up with six games spread across the two Divisions. Seven fixtures were scheduled but the Premier Division meeting between Shaftesbury and Alresford was postponed due to Covid related problems. The two games completed in the Premier Division affected both ends of the table. Hamworthy United moved in to second place and remained unbeaten after defeating Baffins Milton Rovers 4-0 at the Specsavers County Ground. Eddie Hodge and Matt Neale claimed two goals apiece as the visitors still seek to get their campaign off the ground. At the other end of the table a welcome win, their first of the season, and three points for Portland. A lone goal from Harry Hutchinson proved enough to defeat Amesbury and get the new Management team of Franklyn Clarke and Sam Poole off to a good start. In Division One Laverstock & Ford dropped their first points of the season, but still remain unbeaten, after sharing four goals with Andover Town. Russell Jones scored twice for Laverstock and Ben Emans matched that for the visitors leaving the two sides in first

and third place respectively in the table. Follands were held to a one all draw at Hamble by East Cowes Vics with Ryan Gregory giving the Islanders a first half lead and Jake Bartlett levelling matters after the break. A good point for Vics on the day. A good day for Fawley as well with their first win of the season as they scored three without reply against Downton on the Waterside, the goals coming from Decc Hartigan, Billy Lawrence and Rob Bradley. Lastly two sides yet to find last season’s form, Andover New Street and Hythe & Dibden, finished all square at one apiece with Ally MacCracken getting the home goal but sadly no advice as to the Hythe scorer. One game in the League Cup as well and a good win for Bemerton Heath over Christchurch for whom the games are coming thick and fast. Justin Bennett added two more to his growing tally for the season with Rafa Ramos scoring a third and Ash Pope netting Christchurch’s Christc consolation. On to the Buildbase FA Vase and seven ties that paired Wessex League Clubs with opposition from other Leagues with four results going Wessex’s way and three defeats. Bashley were the highest scorers of the day in a 6-2 6 win at Combined Counties side Ash United with two goals each for Harry Morgan and Cameron Beard plus singles from Harry McGrath and Harry Bunce. Fleet Town and Hellenic League Shrivenham were goalless at the break but a hat trick from Dan Bone saw the home side through to a three one victory. The other two successes came via the penalty shoot-out out route. Fareham were 2-0 2 up against Badshot Lea at the break before the visitors came back to share six goals after ninety minutes, but penalties were not their strong point as the “Creeksiders” triumphed 3-0. 3 Curt Robbins, Josh Benfield and Callum Benfield scored for Fareham whilst one of the visiting goals came from Danilo Cadete, who has worn the colours of more than one Wessex League Club in his time. The fourth success for the League was, one imagines, a rather tense affair as Petersfield kept the game scoreless for ninety minutes at Farnham Town before going oing through 7-6 7 from the spot.

SWIFTS UPDATE The Swifts found themselves in cup action on Wednesday night against South Wonston with the Foxcotte Park pitch looking like a carpet and with the added drizzle creating a real zip. The home side started with a bang, with Charlie Rodgers playing in a more advanced role, curling a beautiful shot past the keeper. 1 then became 2 when Liam Dufall spectacular effort cannoned in off the post. The home side looked comfortable during the first half, creating chances and looking the more likely to add to the score sheet with Ryan Morgans & Marcus Tyler both came close. The away side started the second half quickly with a well taken finish to set up what would a thrilling second half. The away side stayed on the front foot and looked to try and break down the strong and resolute Swifts defence. The Swifts then restored the 2 goal lead with Liam Dufall’s second of the night, with a strong drive into the corner of the goal! The away side with nothing to lose threw everything they had at the

Swifts defence and finally bundled in their second of the evening, making the score line 3-2 2 with not long left on the clock. Callum Buck stole the ball in the middle of the park with a strong tackle and started to run at the South Wonston back line, jinking past one and creating space outside the box to unleash the goal of the game, with the ball flying into the roof of net. Absolute rocket. With not long left and the score line at 4-2, 2, you would have thought that would be done and dusted. There was still some late drama to come with The Swifts conceding a penalty which was slotted away with keeper Mike Horne unlucky not to save. The game ended 4-3 4 with a dramatic night up at the Foxcotte and the t Swifts into the next round of the cup. The Swifts faced Wednesday opponents South Wonston on Saturday, Saturday looking to make it another victory and 3 points towards the promotion push. It didn’t take long for The Swifts to carry on from there Wednesday night with the home sides first touch of the ball, was picking pi the ball out their own net as Harry Lawton finished from a superb cross from in-form in winger Liam Duffal. The he game then settled down with the t Swifts controlling most of the play and creating chances. The home side looked dangerous on the break causing a few nervous moments at the back. The Swifts contributed to press and probe but couldn’t find the important second goal. Similarly to the first half, The Swifts created a number of good chances in the second half but failed to convert but always looked comfortable and in control of the game. The Swifts saw the game out with a clean sheet and 3 points on the road.

LADIES ANDOVER NEW STREET 2 PORTSMOUTH DEVELOPMENT 5

STREET LADIES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON AGAINST STRONG POMPEY SIDE Street ladies were left to rue a below par performance in the first half as they suffered their first defeat of the season last Sunday. After last week’s postponed game against Cowes due to a waterlogged pitch, the Street looked off the pace in the opening half against a strong Portsmouth side. Pompey were keeping possession much better than New Street and were exploiting the space on the pitch and using the ball effectively. It wasn’t long before they made it 1-0 when they were able to break through down the right hand side to score. The second goal was not long in coming as Portsmouth played a ball through the middle of the pitch and were quickly through to score and give the Street a mountain to climb.

WORD ON THE STREET | ANDOVER NEW STREET V ALTON | 17.10.20

Further goals followed before half-time half and the Street were relieved to hear the halftime whistle so they could regroup at 4-0 down at the break. The second half was a complete turnaround turn with the Street competing against their opponents and winning the ball higher up the pitch. Nikki Barnes was pushed up front and responded with a goal that further lifted the Street. Barnes was on target again from a corner shortly later and an unlikely comeback was suddenly on. n. This however was denied when Portsmouth broke on the left hand side and scored to make it 5-2. 5 The Street continued to match their opponents for the remainder of the game but unable to reduce the deficit further. Manager Kyla Tobin said after the game; “We We showed great character in the second half as we didn’tt compete in i the first half. We did start with a different formation and maybe we shouldn’tt have tried that today, but we were excellent second half. Kate Probert was outstanding in midfield, constantly winning the ball for us and making us tick in the second half.” half. 61

WHO?

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Now in their 4th season in the Wessex One after relegation from the Premier Division in 2017. After a number of seasons prior to that finishing around the relegation places in the Wessex Premier, the 2016-17 season finally saw them finish in 20th position and relegated. There was no instant return for the Oilers as they have finished in 9th and 11th the following season. 2019-20 saw the Oilers fall further down the league table and were 15th when the season was abandoned.

The last time we faced Fawley was last January when we travelled to the Waterside and produced ed an excellent performance. The Street got off to a perfect start when Gerson Ramos broke through to score after 23 minutes. Jazz Beavis then doubled the Streets advantage from the penalty spot on 39 minutes and 2 minutes later Ramos got his second before half-time half and then completed his hat-trick trick eleven minutes into the second half with a powerful header from f a Street corner. The match was sealed with a fine strike e from midfielder Alex Dockree in i the 89th minute

2020-21 SEASON SO FAR... The Oilers haven’t had the best of starts to this season despite an opening victory in the FA Cup on penalties against Shaftesbury. They then lost the next 7 matches, including league defeats to Andover Town, Laverstock & Ford, Hythe & Dibden and Verwood Town. They then picked up their first points against Downton with a 3-0 home victory, but then lost 3-0 away at Newport IOW last Tuesday night. 68

STADIUM – WATERSIDE SPORTS The ground is enclosed with a seated stand on one side of the ground and a couple of covered stands on the other side of the ground. Fawley is famous for the Esso refinery, which is one of the largest in Great Britain. The complex dominates the landscape and you can see the towers from the football ground.

THE LAST WORD BY DAVID RICHARDSON – SENIOR WRITER AT THE NON LEAGUE PAPER The international break very rarely affects NonLeague clubs, but Non-League is increasingly influencing the international scene. The international break very rarely affects Non-League clubs, but Non-League is increasingly influencing the international scene. Each season we see more players deservedly earn moves into the Football League – and some even go on to reach the absolute peak. Over the last seven months the football pyramid has become even more divided, with ‘Project Big Picture’ now trying hard to increase the gap, but the importance of lower-league clubs to the product on the pitch has never been more obvious. Six players in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad have had stints in Non-League and there were five in the side Ryan Giggs picked for Wales when the two teams met last week. Nick Pope started the friendly fixture at Wembley having begun his career in the Eastern Counties League with Team Bury before progressing to Bury Town in the Isthmian League.

70

The back-up up England keepers against Wales, Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, are also no strangers to NonNon League. Pickford had loan spells at Darlington and Alfreton Town while Henderson played in goal for Stockport County just over four years ago when they were in National League North. He’s also pushing to become Manchester United’s number one. Centre-back Tyrone Mings impressed in senior football at Yate Town and Chippenham Town in the Southern League before a successful trial at Ipswich Town forged the start of his top-flight top career. Dominic Calvert-Lewin Lewin made his England debut, and scored, in the 3-0 3 win over Wales. A debut goal was nothing new to the Everton striker, as a 17-year-old 17 he bagged on his first appearance for Stalybridge Celtic against Hyde on Boxing Day when Sheffield United sent him out for game time. On New Year’s Day, in the reverse fixture, ture, he scored twice and set up three. Danny Ings also got in on the act at Wembley, scoring his first goal for his country via a bicycle kick. Ten years ago, he was netting in Non-League League at Dorchester Town on loan from Bournemouth. Many others in the England squad either started or showed their talents in the lower reaches of the Football League before stepping up into the Premier League spotlight. Non-League League football and its clubs play a vital role in developing players just as much as the top-flight ht academies – every player has a different path and their roots should not be forgotten.
