ANDOVER NEW STREET v ANDOVER TOWN TUESDAY 15th FEBRUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 7.45PM
welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK
“
Welcome back to you all to Foxcotte Park for our re-arranged midweek fixture with Andover Town. This evening we’re under the floodlights for what promises to be another keenly contested encounter. The Town have been on an excellent run this season that sees them pushing for promotion and just one point separates the two teams, so the Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure their unbeaten run at Foxcotte Park in the league continues. There’s plenty inside this evening’s issue including a match report on the previous game against Petersfield on Saturday and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s important match against Andover Town in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Town including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Andover Town that have made the short journey to Foxcotte Park this evening and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on tonight. Our last home game saw us take on Ash United and once we got the opening goal from Reece Rusher early on, we never looked back. I was really pleased with the performance of the whole side and also for Josh Jeffery, who never stopped working and was rewarded with his fine hat-trick in the second half. It was a game in which we showed all the attributes necessary to win; great pass and move football and a resilience when needed. Your support also helped, with your noise, when we kept pushing towards the end, so thank you for that. That game saw us play without a recognised central striker, but the entire side put in a good shift and helped us continue our fine form at home.

“IT WAS A GAME IN WHICH WE SHOWED ALL THE ATTRIBUTES NECESSARY TO WIN: GREAT PASS AND MOVE FOOTBALL AND A RESILIENCE
WHEN NEEDED”
Tremendous I thought the performance from the whole team on Saturday was tremendous against Petersfield Town. An early goal blitz, where we scored three times in five minutes sealed the win, but we had to manage the game in the second half, especially when Petersfield pulled a goal back, but we defended well in tricky conditions, and it was good to see Joe Wright and Liam Hibberd put in solid performances. The whole teams display epitomised the strong and committed performance by each and every player and that was the basis for a deserved result in some difficult conditions. After this evening’s game we face another test on Saturday against Ringwood Town, who will provide stern opposition. It is vital we focus on tonight’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us. I know that the Andover Town players are going to be really up for this game, they will be looking for a response after two league defeats, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park.

BOARDROOM
WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD
Good evening and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Andover Town, here tonight for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable evening with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Ash United and Petersfield Town last week – which I hope we can improve on tonight.
Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Tonight’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Andover Town have been on an impressive run of form of
6
late but come into the game on the back of two narrow defeats to fellow promotion challengers, Folland Sports and Laverstock & Ford. We will of course need to be on our toes to ensure we can maintain our winning form.
Congratulations Congratulations also need to go to our Swifts side who confirmed their league title with a 4-0 victory over Silchester – thanks to a hat-trick from Liam Dufall and a further goal from Nic Turpin. Well done to the lads and to the management team led by Robbie Skeates.
We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead. Starting with tonight’s game and with the likes of Bemerton, Romsey, Newport (IOW) and Downton all to come in March. It makes for an exciting end to the season. One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS
THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT
Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on Andover Town in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion.
“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”
After a great start last Saturday when we went 3-0 up inside the opening 25 minutes against a difficult Petersfield side, we then defended extremely well against the wind and could have extended our lead near the end. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week. We have made some important signings recently to improve what is already a strong squad with Jordi Wilson, Chris Flood, Joe Wright signing recently. And we have also signed a familiar face in Liam Hibberd last week, with Hibbo coming on early in the second half in the game against Petersfield.

Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last 16 league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.
All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on. This evening we take on Andover Town, who are just one point behind us and will be looking to bounce back to winning ways, so we know that we will be in for a tough game this evening. In my experience these are the games that are the toughest. We’ve already seen how competitive this league is, with some memorable games across the league, let’s hope that tonight is another one of those occasions. Get behind us once again tonight. Enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT TUESDAY WHEN THEY TRAVEL SOUTH TO FACE BOTTOM SIDE TOTTON & ELING AT THE MILLER PARK
TOTTON & ELING WHO? Totton & Eling, aka the
Miller’s, from Miller Park, are the Street’s opponents on the 22nd of February. Totton lost 5-2 last Saturday against mid-table Whitchurch United and the Miller’s currently sit bottom of the league in 20th place with 13 points. HOW THEY DOING? The Millers are currently on a losing run of 14 matches, in fact you have to go back to early November for their last point, which was a 1-1 home draw with East Cowes. They also drew their previous game 2-2 at home to Fawley. Their last win came against Infinity with a 5-1 score line, Alex Sawyer scoring 4 and Ben Roles also finding the net, but this is likely to expunged from the league following the Southampton side’s resignation from the league. Totton’s most recent defeats have included heavy defeats to Bemerton Heath (8-0), Laverstock & Ford (4-0), Folland Sports (7-1) and Millbrook (4-0). They narrowly lost 2-1 at Ringwood Town with Joseph Steel scoring the Miller’s consolation goal. A 3-0 defeat away at Petersfield Town with a brace from Aaron Akoman-Ehikpa and Kieran Alcock scoring the goals for the Rams. A recent 2-0 home defeat to Ash United, the Green Army scorers were Luke Cairns and Zac Aubrey-Simpson doing the damage before their defeat to Whitchurch on Saturday. The Jam Boys scorers were Ryan Long x2, Nathan Lynch, Grant Powell and Craig Rutledge.

HOW TO GET THERE? Miller Park is 44
minutes or 25 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A3057 towards Stockbridge. Continue along the A3057 through Stockbridge and Kings Somborne and all the way to Romsey. At the turn left onto The Hundred/B3398. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Bypass Rd/A27/A3090. At Ower Roundabout, take the 1st exit onto A36. At Ower Interchange, take the 2nd exit onto A326. Use the left lane to take the A36 slip road to Totton/Town Centre/Ower. Turn left onto Salisbury Rd/A36. The ground, which can be found next to AFC Totton’s ground is on the left.
HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,
our last match at Test Park came in October 2019 in the Wessex League Cup and saw the Street lose 1-0 thanks to an own goal. We also won 3-0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup in August 2019 thanks to a brace from Shane Lock and a Ilyas Warshow goal. Our last league visit at Totton saw the Street claim promotion to the Wessex Premier in April 2018. A Zach Neve hat-trick was backed up with goals from defender Wade Crisp and Casson Spencer to ensure a 5-0 win and guarantee the Street promotion. The Street have already faced Totton & Eling already this season. Back in November the Street won 8-1 here are Foxcotte Park, Luke Hooper, Reece Rusher and Cameron Thatcher all scoring twice with Max Allen and Shane Lock also on target.

welcome ANDOVER TOWN
It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Andover Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Town make the short journey across Andover for the first time since their 5-1 defeat in the North Hants Cup last November. Ben Emans gave Town an early lead, but the Street fought back with goals from Reece Rusher, Shane Lock, Lee Morris, Harry Lawton and Josh Jeffery sealed the win and progression to the semi-finals. This evening’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with Andover Town coming into the game one place behind the Street, after their 1-0 defeat to Laverstock & Ford on Saturday. So, a win will be important for both sides to maintain their promotion aspirations. Town got off to a perfect start this season with a 3-0 home victory over Fawley AFC. This was followed with a 3-3 draw at East Cowes and then another draw at home against the Street when first Cameron Thatcher and then a late Ross Cook equaliser earned the Street a point. A 4-3 defeat at Downton followed despite Michael Owen levelling and then Josh Bertie putting the Town in front. A crazy second period
14
saw Downton level and re-take the lead to 4-2 before Musah Stamburi got a late consolation for the Town. A 4-2 home win over Folland Sports in the Hampshire Cup was then followed by a 3-1 home defeat against the same opposition. Further wins against Millbrook, Baffins Milton Rovers, Bashley (on penalties), Infinity and Hythe & Dibden, with only the 4-1 defeat to Street in the FA Vase rounding off September. A 4-2 defeat at Shaftesbury in the League Cup was the Town’s only defeat in October as they went unbeaten with wins over Romsey Town, New Milton Town, Fleet Spurs and Ringwood Town. The month ended with a 2-2 draw at Verwood Town. Michael Owen and David Jerrard gave Town a 2-1 lead, but Oliver Davies equalised with 20 minutes to go to earn the Potters a point. Town maintained their league unbeaten run of 15 league matches with wins over Totton & Eling, Ash United, Petersfield Town, Infinity, Laverstcok & Ford and East Cowes through November and December. The start of 2022 saw the Town lose 3-2 at Petersfield (3-2) but claim wins over Fawley, Whitchurch Utd, Fleet Spurs and Downton before two narrow defeats at Folland Sports and last Saturday against Laverstock & Ford.

bluffers guide Andover Town FC... THE CLUB The club was established by staff from Andover College and Sparsholt College in 2013 after Andover F.C. had disbanded; the two colleges approached Test Valley Borough Council about taking over Andover's Portway Stadium to use for their football academy programmes, with the aim of also forming a senior club. The club were elected to Division One of the Wessex League. During their first season they were involved in a Hampshire Senior Cup tie at Brockenhurst which finished 0–0 after extra time; in the subsequent penalty shootout, 29 consecutive penalties were scored, with Brockenhurst eventually winning 15–14. This was later confirmed by the Football Association as an English record (and possibly a world record) for the highest number of consecutive goals scored in a penalty shootout. At the end of the 2013–14 season Andover were Division One runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. The following season saw them make their debut in the FA Vase, and in 2015–16 they played in the FA Cup for the first time. In 2017–18 the club were Premier Division runners-up, potentially earning promotion to Division One West of the Southern League. However, the club turned down promotion and were relegated to Division One of the Wessex League as punishment. The club has since steady progression under the stewardship of Ron Bertie as manager, being assisted by Jason Holmes. This progression has seen them become real promotion challengers this season and they are currently on an impressive 15 league game unbeaten run dating back to their last defeat to Folland Sports in late August.

ANDOVER – THE AREA The town is on the River Anton, a major source of the Test, and is situated alongside the major A303 trunk road at the eastern end of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 km) west of the town of Basingstoke, both major rail stops. It is 14 miles (23 km) NNW of the city of Winchester, 35 miles (56 km) north of the city of Southampton and 65 miles (105 km) WSW of London. Andover is twinned with the towns of Redon in France, Goch in Germany, and Andover, Massachusetts in the United States. Watermills have formed an important part in Andover's history. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded six mills. Rooksbury Mill is one of the few surviving mill buildings in Andover. The existence of Rooksbury Mill is first recorded by name in the 17th century. Functioning as a flour mill, it has passed through a succession of owners. Milling ceased in the early 20th century, after which the mill building went through a series of uses including being used as a small theatre. Test Valley Borough Council sold the building in 2002, shortly after it had been devastated following an arson attack. The new owners, Anthony and Sarah de Sigley, restored the building in 2003, rebuilding much of the original structure. A large flour mill, McDougalls, is close to the railway station. 2018 RUSSELL COTES CUP FINAL SUCCESS The new season opened with a 6-1 home league win against Bemerton Heath Harlequins. The club then progressed on an unbeaten run in the league of 16 games, finally losing 3-0 at Alresford Town on 8th November. Whilst their cup encounters didn't fare as well - after two wins in the FA. Cup, including beating Southern League, Wimborne Town after a replay, before losing at home to Cadbury Heath from Bristol. Then a quick exit from the FA. Vase losing to Horndean after extra time. Halfway through the season after 21 games, the club were riding high at the top of the table. By the end of the season with two matches left, the club clinched promotion to the Southern League West division, for the first time in their short history. The season also saw Town achieve the most goals scored (116) since their formation in 2013 and the most points in a season (99) plus of course the highest ever finish as runners up (second place) in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league. The club also won the final of the Russell Cotes Cup beating AFC Stoneham 1-0 The club won "Club of the Month" twice during the season - August & October 2017.

2018 FA GROUNDSMAN OF THE YEAR Another success for the 2017/18 season, for the second year in succession, the Portway groundsman Chris White had been nominated for the National FA Groundsman of the Year awards, representing the entire Wessex League (i.e., best Wessex League groundsman) and, of course Andover Town Football Club. The FA conducted their assessment at Portway. Indeed, Chris won the coveted award .... "Although no longer at The Portway, last season’s Andover Town F.C. groundsman Chris White has won outright the coveted FA National Groundsman of the Year competition for the 2017/18 season. Competing against approximately 650 other clubs right across the country at Step 5 and 6 of the Football pyramid, the judging panel consisted of Professional groundsman from the likes of Wembley Stadium, Manchester City and Southampton."

A STREET... …AND A BLUEBIRD
A number of players have served both the Street and the Bluebirds down the years. George Baxter, Michael Horne, Dave Tasker, Michael Weatherall, Luke Dempsey, Liam Hibberd, Mark Keogh, Sam Mills, Alfie Moulding, Adam Pearson, Matt Scott, Dean Smith, McAulie Stubbs, Owen Trapnell, Joe Wright, Craig Blakeman, Gary Thorne, Zach Hine, Reece Rusher, Claudio Herbert and Alex Dockree are names familiar to both sets of supporters. One name that does stick out is Callum Sweeney. Callum started at Street, where he played sporadically over the course of a few seasons and made 10 appearances for the and scored 1 goal. It was then in the 2016-17 season that he played for 3 local sides in one season. He made 11 appearances for Street, 10 for Whitchurch United, scoring twice and finally 6 appearances at the Portway for the Bluebirds. He returned to Foxcotte Park for the successful 2017-18 season, where he played a key role in the Street obtaining promotion to the Wessex Premier and also win both the North Hants Senior Cup and the Andover Open Cup. Sweeney would make 41 appearances that season and scored 18 times including a crucial goal against Christchurch late in the season and he would also have a hand in many of the goals that season.
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE? Today will be the 11th meeting between the Street and the Bluebirds and will be the fifth at Foxcotte Park. The Street have a slight edge against today’s visitors, winning five of the 10 matches. One has ended all square whilst Andover Town have won the other four. That sole draw came earlier this season at the Portway Stadium with 369, the highest attendance of the season so far this season, witnessing Andover Town taking a two-goal lead into half-time, through Josh Bertie and Michael Owen. The Street would fight back late in the second half with first Cameron Thatcher scoring and then Ross Cook equalised late on, when he fired home from the edge of the box following a Street corner. Nathan Primus was sent -off for Andover Town between the two goals going in. The Street have also played Andover Town in two cupties this season. The first saw Daryll Phillips make an outstanding debut for the Street, when he scored in the first 30 seconds of the match and would go on to score an

The following season saw him make a further 39 appearances for the Street and although the campaign would see them relegated, Sweeney’s performances would ensure silverware would be secured again with both the North Hants and Andover Open Cups retained.
Callum Sweeney
Callum would move from the Street to Tadley Calleva in the middle of the 2019-20 season, where he would make 12 appearances and scoring 4 times for Tadley. In 2020-21, he would go back to the Portway for a second time and would make just 9 appearances that season, scoring twice. This season Sweeney is applying his trade at current league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins. He has made 23 appearances to date, scoring 4 goals – including 1 penalty. amazing hat-trick in the 4-1 victory at the Portway Stadium. Town captain Brendon Holmes scoring a late consolation for the Bluebirds. The other cup-tie would take place last month in the North Hants Senior Cup and again the Street were victorious, even though they would have to come from behind after Ben Emans had put the Town ahead in the first half. The Street responded and would score twice late in the 1st half through Shane Lock and Reece Rusher. The second half would see Town go down to 10 men when JJ Tucker was sent off for the visitors. The Street would take advantage with further goals from Lee Morris, Harry Lawton and Josh Jeffery. At Foxcotte Park the Street have won two of the four games. The Street’s other win here came in the league in 2019 when a penalty from Callum Sweeney was cancelled out by a free-kick equaliser from Zach Hine, before Jake Curtis scored a fine header to win the three points. The Town won the first two meetings at Foxcotte park back in 2014 (0-2) and 2015 (0-9) in the League Cup.

Alex of Andover HE’S ONE OF A SELECT GROUP OF PLAYERS THAT HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH STREET AND TOWN. MIDFIELDER ALEX DOCKREE REFLECTS ON THE UPS AND DOWN DURING HIS TIME AT FOXCOTTE PARK AND THE PORTWAY STADIUM. “No, I think the uncertainty of the season not going the full distance played a key part, we were always wondering if the game we had next would be our last!” The Street would end the nightmare 2020-21 season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Downton, which would see Street miss out on promotion by 1 point on the points per game calculations made by the League over the last two curtailed seasons. It was probably one of the toughest seasons in Dockrees career. But more of that later – let’s start at the beginning. Everyone likes a hometown boy done good. The same can be said of Alex, although he didn’t begin his career in football at one of the Andover sides.
“Don’t worry I could talk about football all night,” says Alex Dockree as we usher our apologies for interrupting his Thursday evening. As the phone call ticked around the hour mark Dockree has reminisced about his playing career, as the conversation wandered from his time as a youngster at Whitchurch United, to joining his hometown club – Andover Town to finally playing for Street during two Covid-19 hit seasons. “It’s been amazing to recall my playing career!” he says. Dockree is excited, it’s the evening before the last day of term and Alex, who’s main profession when he isn’t playing football is a teacher, is already looking forward to the Christmas break. The former Street midfielder reflected on last season’s disappointing early ending, and we asked if the team had a hangover from the 201920 seasons unscheduled finish with 10 games to go?

“I started out playing men’s football for Whitchurch Reserves. I signed up in the New Year of 2008, as soon as I was eligible to play,” explains Dockree. “I had just turned 16 and wanted to step up away from youth football. “I played just under a dozen games for the reserve side that season and even got one goal but can’t remember who it was against or what it was like.” What he does remember was the following 2009-10 season as it marked his first team debut for Whitchurch, even though he played very few reserve matches that season. “There is a very good explanation for that. I was playing for Basingstoke Town Academy U19’s that season but was also dual signed with Whitchurch so when Basingstoke’s season ended, I was able to play for the Jam Boys. I had a good season with Basingstoke, and it helped set me up for the future.” Alex’s first appearance for Whitchurch was an important one too – “It was the Andover Open Cup Final against Otterborne. I can remember going into the changing room and some of the guys were like ‘who’s this kid?’ but Marc Rees stood up

going home to play rugby, so I wasn’t missing out by going home and I was also getting paid. I could get a train home from Cardiff for £8 then and I would make the most of getting my washing done at home. I’d also did coach up at Andover Youth on a Saturday morning, so my weekends would be fairly busy with football.” “Whitchurch were in a progression stage and building for the future, the aim was to get into the Wessex Premier. We had some talented players like Paul Coventry and Brett Denham in the squad, but we finished in 8th position.”
for me and said, ‘no he’s quality, we’ll be ok tonight with him in the side.’ Well, I came on and endorsed what Marc said, as I played well and even scored at the end of the game in the penalty shoot-out victory. “I don’t know what it was, but I didn’t feel any pressure when I was younger taking a penalty. The game was played at the Portway, and I can remember placing the ball and looking at the goal and it looked massive, and I just didn’t care, which I know sounds awful, but I was young and very confident. Missing never entered my head. These days I’m a bag of nerves over a penalty kick!” he laughs. Following that season Alex was furthering his education at Cardiff University. After partaking in pre-season training at Andover. “I took part in the pre-season training at Andover but knew that I would be at Cardiff when the season started. I joined the Cardiff Met university side and we were training and playing twice a week, we were trained by Christian Edwards , who had played for Swansea, Notts Forest and Bristol Rovers so he was very experienced. “University not only gave the qualifications to start me on my road to become a teacher, but it also helped my progression in regards my football career. It was a tough environment, but it stood me in good stead. These days I see a lot of young players have everything delivered to them on a plate. I think all young players need to learn discipline and the respect. Cleaning boots for the older pros is not a bad thing.” The 2011-12 season would see Dockree return to Whitchurch, “I got a call from Jim Macey, and he wanted me to play. My mates at Uni were

“The following season, I played just the one game for Whitchurch, which was in the FA Cup against Folland Sports. To be honest, I tried to please everybody and signed for both Cardiff Met and Whitchurch. In the end I had to make a call to Jim and say that I wasn’t coming back and that I would be playing in Wales. I know it made Jim cross with me and don’t get me wrong we are on good terms now, but I know he wasn’t best pleased with my decision. In the end it worked out well for both sides.”

“Going up a division after having such a successful season the previous year was very tough, most of the players you come up against have played at a higher level and are either looking to return up the footballing ladder or looking for one last pay day until they give up playing. Either way you’re playing against top quality opposition, week in, week out and it can be hard. I also wasn’t enjoying my football at the time. Andover Town had just reformed and were going well in Division 1 and I really wanted to be a part of it. So, after 6 games I made the decision to move to Andover Town. The players they had at the time was unbelievable. Quality all over the pitch; Lewis Benson, Claudio Herbert, Lloyd Foot and Michael Dixon. “That season for Cardiff Met was unbelievable we won everything. It was like all the seasons before we were geared up for this one season. We won the Welsh League Division Two and had to play at some horrendous places. I was also playing up-front for the side and some of things that the centre backs use to do behind the refs back were shocking! But we just got on with it. We were miles better than the other sides in the league and fully deserved the title. Whitchurch also achieved promotion. Missing out on the title on goal difference to Brockenhurst.” The following season was not so happy a time for Alex as he returned to Whitchurch for the challenge of Wessex Premier football.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I needed a change of scene and I always wanted to play for my local side. That season was another good one in the end, although we ended up finishing second in the league to Petersfield Town by a point. We drew against them on the Easter Saturday and felt that as long as we kept winning, they wouldn’t be able to catch us, unfortunately on the Easter Monday we drew with Tadley Calleva, and Petersfield never looked back.” Alex would also end the season missing out on silverware following injury in the Andover Open Cup against Otterbourne.

“I got knocked out during the final, so I wasn’t able to take a penalty in the shootout. Otterbourne were a good side at the time and were managed by Richard Luffman. Fortunately, I was able to play in the Hospital Cup Final against Bemerton. I remember scoring to make it 2-1 after Claudio equalised and Lloyd Foot got the winner late on. It was a great final.” Dockree would continue to play at the Portway, although he remembers not always fitting into manager Neil Bensons plans. “I was starting from the bench quite often and I was knocking on the managers door, demanding to know why I wasn’t starting matches. I then got a chance up front and started to find the back of the net. I was very much a confidence player. If I started well then, I would be consistent always through the game. I also often scored in batches and if I scored one, I would more than likely get a second in the same game. It was at this time that Alex would receive recognition for reaching 100 appearances for the Town. “I got a hat-trick that game,” he recalls. “We played Fareham Town and I was presented with my 100 appearances trophy and then went on to score a hat-trick in front of nearly 200 people for my hometown club. It doesn’t get much better than that.”
26
It would get better for both Andover sides in 2017-18 when both would finish as runners-up in their respective leagues. Although both sides would be kicking themselves for not actually winning the leagues. “We were flying in the league, by this time we had Mike Gosney, Zach Glasspool, Jo Chamberlain, Joe Wright to name a few. We were about 15 points clear of Blackfield & Langley and bossing the league. We overcame losing to Blackfield at their place and we went to Hamworthy and came from a goal down to win 41 and went out in Bournemouth to celebrate.” That is where Dockree’s season would come to abrupt end, when he was involved in an incident that so nearly ended his football career. “I basically got hit on the night out and ended up fracturing my skull. I do not remember how it happened or who did it, but I was side-lined with the doctors telling me I could not play but I was desperate to finish the season. The most frustrating thing was I could not even go and watch the first three matches after the incident, so I was constantly refreshing Twitter to find out what was happening. “I was finally allowed to go watch the side when they travelled to Horndean and we lost 3-2 despite Zach Glasspool scoring twice. I think the day I realised we were not going to win the league was when we drew 3-3 with Team Solent at home.
“We were 3-0 down and Solent were not exactly a great side and then with 20 minutes to go we started a comeback with Joe Wright and Zach Glasspool scoring. Then Zach got his second to equalise with 3 minutes left and then Mike Gosney struck the crossbar in injury time and if that had gone in then I think we would have won the league. “Meanwhile, I had been working on my fitness to get myself back playing as soon as I could, and I penned in the Russell Coats Cup Final at the end of the season as the match I was aiming for. “I was in the gym every day, desperate to be ready for that game as I had scored in the semifinal, and I was relieved that I made the bench. I did have to wear head protective gear like current Wolves striker Raul Jimenez. People were concerned that I might do more damage to my head, but I wasn’t as the injury didn’t occur on the field playing. I never gave it a second thought. The final was frustrating to watch as Stoneham were bossing the midfield and I just wanted to get on the pitch to affect the game. And I was brought on at half-time and helped win the game 1-0. That would be my last game for Town as during the close season the club rejected promotion and the team disbanded. “I joined Alresford Town, along with a few others from Andover but I didn’t get the best of starts as I broke my foot in the last pre-season friendly, when my foot got kicked by a defender clearing the ball and I knew straight away that it was broke. My wife was not best pleased as we have photos of our holiday and I’m wearing shorts and a massive Robocop style boot! “I got back playing for Alresford, but again I wasn’t enjoying the long drives out for home games all the time and we were expecting our first child soon, so after 25 games I contacted the manager Richard Luffman and explained that things were not working out for me, and he was very understanding as long as I didn’t go straight back to Andover Town or New Street. I was honest with him, and he was fine with that. The itch to get back playing was still there for Alex and at the start of the 2019-20 season it was announced that he had signed for Street. “John Smith had always wanted to sign me, and a number of times made enquiries, but it just wasn’t the right time for me. When he came calling during the summer of 2019 it felt right. www.ansfc.co.uk
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet
“Again, I didn’t get off to the best of starts as I injured my knee in a pre-season friendly, playing on the Charlton Astro pitch, so my competitive debut didn’t happen until the end of August when we lost 2-1 to Alton in the FA Vase. “After that though we went on an amazing run of results. We had a brilliant squad with the likes of Luke Hooper, Rafa, Jason Silver and Jazz Beavis and were eyeing promotion before Covid hit and put a stop to the season. It then seemed to take ages for us to get back training and we lost a couple of key players. “It was a shame it didn’t work out for Danny Dolan as manager, as he is a great guy and a good technical manager, but JC and Smithy are doing a great job this season and I fully expect the squad they have at their disposal to be promoted at the end of the season.” The most important question for Alex is, who will he be supporting this evening? “New Street! It should be a really good game between two good sides and hopefully a big crowd. I’ve got many more friends at the club now compared to Town, so it has to be Green and Black!” @AndoverNSfc

PETERSFIELD T 1-3 STREET AKOMAN-EHIKPA 66
PEARSON 15, LOCK 19, 21
WHAT’S THE STORY? Street made it three wins and nine points in eight days and completed the double over Petersfield but were made to work hard for their win by a committed home side in a game that was virtually decided by a fiveminute spell in the first half. Both goalkeepers were quickly involved with home custodian Tim Jackson having to leave his area to clear a through ball and Jordi Wilson at the other end claiming a high free kick in a crowded six-yard box.
MOMENTS
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
Street slowly made their way into the game and the sixteenth minute was the prelude to a five-minute spell that in the end decided the destination of the points. Joe Wright’s quickly taken free kick found Mikey Davis on the left and his low cross was turned in by Adam Pearson at the far post, the tall defender having gone up largely to add his height to the attack. Two minutes on and the advantage was doubled as neat control by Chris Flood gave Shane Lock a shooting chance and though the first effort was blocked, he swept the loose ball past Jackson. The clock had yet to reach the halfway mark when Josh Jeffery won a corner – it was inches away from being an own goal the kick caused a scramble in the home sixyard box that was ended by Shane Lock forcing the ball over the line for his second to give his side a three-goal lead. The game was becoming scrappy, and the home side missed a chance when there were three passes inside the area before the ball was cleared when all three were shooting opportunities. At the midway point of the half Petersfield reduced the deficit. A long free kick was headed back across goal from the far post and Akoman forced the ball over the line. Jackson then saved at Flood’s feet but generally it was the home side going forward with a volley from Jake Burton almost shaving the crossbar. But the Street held on to secure the three points and move up to fourth.

NON-LEAGUE NEEDS YOU!
For the past three seasons I have been involved in volunteering and helping out with Non-League teams alongside my studies. Without Volunteers no Non-League side would be able to possibly function, which is why I would encourage more people to volunteer as the reward is not just colossus for the club, you're helping out with but for yourself also. Since the age of 12 I discovered I had a passion for Non-League football as soon as I attended my first ever game, it was a 0-0 draw between my local club Basingstoke Town and Havant and Waterlooville in the Conference South. It may have not been an encapsulating experience for many, but it was for me! I was in awe with the whole match day experience from the close connections between players and fans, the pulsating, passionate and loud atmosphere as well as the kindness of all around. I felt at one with NonLeague football and realised that it was soon to be an addiction which turned into one of my all-time favourite hobbies and passions.
38
Without Non-League football I cannot imagine what my life would be like, quite literally speaking. After having watched the Dragons for a few seasons I realised that I had a burning passion also for writing football. At this time, I had been running an Arsenal football fan page on Instagram called Gooner Liam Harding for a couple of years, which accumulated a fair number of followers and I realised that I should delve outside of this arena. Into one which would benefit others as well as myself-I turned to Non-League football teams and their programmes. One of the first clubs I contacted was Hendon, due to the connection it had with my Great Granddad Ted Drake who managed the club in the late 1940s after a successful career at Arsenal as Striker. His time as Dons manager proved to be a steppingstone that avalanched him into winning the title with Chelsea in 1955. So, I asked if I could write an article about him and the club accepted my request, offering me the opportunity to write more articles for the match day programme from that day onwards which I’ll never look back on! As many will know the official match day programme for clubs at this level would simply not be produced to such great quality which it is without the aid of volunteers. Due to the fact that the vast majority of Non-League teams operate on a part time basis apart from a few acceptances in the National League.
Soon afterwards I contacted Hartley Witney, Woking, Slough Town, Kingstonians, Paulton Rovers and various other Non-League teams from up and down the country to help out with writing Match day articles for. One day I was even invited to Salisbury to go and watch a game for free in the press box and write an article about my match day experience which turned out to be a thrill and a very cherish able experience at their expense. In April 2019 after Basingstoke were relegated from the Southern Premier after their final game at the Camrose losing 1-2 to Taunton Town, a very sorrowing occasion after having watched them only two seasons before being demoted from the National League South. The club were forced to play down at Winchester City's ground in order to carry on surviving in the now Southern League Division One South, which meant that every other week myself and my Granddad would have to make the 19-mile trip just to be able to carry on supporting them. It was at this point that the Announcer stepped down and I stepped up to volunteer and help out the club representing it with pride and passion for a season. I couldn’t have felt any more joyful communicating to all fans at the game through a microphone in a small garden shed educating them on fixtures, team line ups, substitutions and goal scorers. Without the travelling of the fans and the volunteers the club would have gone bust as little revenue was being made through ticket money.

It was then that made me realise that Volunteers can be the difference between life and death for a Non-League club. Fortunately, as of the 2020/21 season which folded rapidly due to Covid-19 Basingstoke returned to playing football within the Town at Winklebury. While ongoing negotiations await a return to the Camrose or a like-for-like ground between the Basingstoke and Deane Council and football club. As well as previous owner Rafi Razzack who evicted them from the Camrose being refused to go forward with his 89 house and caring home application on the Camrose ground nearly a year ago. Recently I have not been as busy volunteering due to attending Solent University since September and enduring a Sport Journalism course, to link up my passion of writing with my career goal of getting into the Sport Journalism industry. Nevertheless, I was still able to find loopholes which allowed me to carry on doing so in some shape or form helping out with recording post-match interviews for Whitchurch United. Another kind and friendly team this time in the Wessex League Division One, currently nesting 12th in the table. It made me realise that with so little time with part time work as well you can still manage to volunteer if you are willing and wanting to, and that time is not just of an essence.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 DEFENDERS.... 10 RUUD KROL NETHERLANDS
One of Dutch football’s all-time greats, Ruud Krol’s education in Ajax’s free-flowing system ensured he was versatile at the back and also able to push up into midfield when called for. Finished as a World Cup runner-up to the home side in both West Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978.
8
GAETANO SCIREA
ITALY
9
JAVIER ZANETTI
ARGENTINA
Like the man at the top of this list, Argentinian Javier Zanetti arrived in Milan as a young man and stayed. And stayed. Then he retired and came back. Across town from Paolo Maldini, Zanetti is now vice president at Inter Milan, but it was as Inter and Argentian’s rightback that he made his reputation. Holds the Champions League record for captain’s appearances (82) and is one of only 35 footballers to achieve 1,000-plus appearances for club and country.
Winner of every UEFA club and domestic competition while at Juventus, Gaetano Scirea was the centre-back for Italy on their way to their World Cup victory at Espana 82. And the defender, who sadly died at the tender age of 36, inspired future generations. “When I broke the record for most appearances at Juve, it was only important for me because it was attached to Gaetano,” said Alessandro Del Piero.
7 PHILIPP LAHM GERMANY
Equally adept on the left, Philipp Lahm is a rare modern-era one-club player, winning the Bundesliga eight times with Bayern Munich and achieving Champions League glory in 2012/13. With the national side, he was ever-present. “He has performed outstandingly in three World Cups – 2006, 2010 and 2014 – where he twice helped Germany to the semifinals, then [in 2014] he lifted the trophy,” said German manager Joachim Low in 2015. “For me, he is the best player of the past decade.”
6
PAUL BREITNER
GERMANY
One of football’s great mavericks, Paul Breitner’s offthe-wall dress and ‘tache sense hid a bright footballing brain. That combined with his physicality and an eye for goal ensured he was a member of the formidable West Germany defence of the ’70s that won the 1974 World Cup and finished as runners-up eight years later. Only Breitner, Pelé, Vavá and Zinedine Zidane have ever scored in multiple World Cup finals.

5
FRANCO BARESI
ITALY
“He was special,” said Paolo Maldini about countryman Franco Baresi, who won the World Cup in 1982. “He was a short, skinny guy but so strong. Let me tell you – when he hit you with a tackle… He wasn’t a big speaker, the way he played, the way he trained was an example. For me, he was the role model. He was a reference. He was also very good with the ball.”
3
BOBBY MOORE
ENGLAND
The late Celtic and Scotland manager Jock Stein once said of the World Cup-winning England captain: "There should be a law against him. He knows what's happening 20 minutes before everyone else."
4
That anticipation saw him excel as a defender for West Ham for 16 seasons and 544 appearances as well as 108 England caps, including that historic day at Wembley on 30 July 1966.
CAFU
BRAZIL
Two-time World Cup-winner Cafu was a dynamic rightback as comfortable on the ball going forward as he was in reverse in defence. He was also as great a man as he was a footballer, just ask Luiz Felipe Scolari: “If there is one man who has made sacrifices and lent himself to the cause of the Brazil team, this man is Cafu. He has been my commander on the field. He is a great example of dedication and humility.”
2
FRANZ BECKENBAUER
GERMANY
Franz Beckenbauer became the first defender to ever win the Ballon D’or in 1972, then promptly became the second four years later. “Class personified. Calmness, pace and the ability to effortlessly move into midfield and attack,” said Glenn Hoddle, of Der Kaiser. “He had a picture of every player on the pitch. He inspired me as a kid, when I saw him play a pass with the inside or then the outside of his foot. The mark of a great player is the ability to be just as effective playing through different eras.” www.ansfc.co.uk

1 PAOLO MALDINI ITALY
Left-back, sweeper, centre-back… Paolo Maldini did it with Italian style <i>and</i> substance at all the positions he played for club and country. And he did it all with a strut that wouldn’t have looked out of place on the Milan catwalks. He spent a quarter of a century starring for AC Milan and now serves as technical director for his former club, where he’s charged with finding the next generation of greats.

NON-LEAGUE TO PREMIER LEAGUE SNUB
By David Richardson
It is not often a Non-League player will turn down the opportunity to sign for a Premier League club. During the January transfer window Lewes talent Ollie Tanner was at the centre of a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur having also received a bid from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Isthmian League Premier club had agreed in principle a deal with Spurs, but the 19-year-old made a mature and brave decision to stay in East Sussex. Tottenham had a frustrating transfer window – even manager Antonio Conte described it as “strange” – as seven players departed and only two arrived which will have dented their top four hopes. Some of their supporters turned their dissatisfaction towards Lewes and Tanner on social media after the Step 3 club revealed the teenager had been unable to agree personal terms. “The subsequent level of abuse on social media he and the club received was unforgiving,” Lewes chairman Stuart Fuller wrote in Sunday’s NLP. “Whilst many of them relayed the “facts” as they believed, or made up, we kept our council knowing that the attention would soon turn to another players and another club.” Lewes have become accustomed to scouts from professional clubs coming to their matches to watch their players. Tanner is the latest example of a youngster that has been given a chance to continue their football career – and developed – at the Dripping Pan having been tossed out of the professional game by Arsenal and then Charlton.
www.ansfc.co.uk
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet
Lewes manager Tony Russell is doing an excellent job along with assistant Joe Vines and head of recruitment Adam Drew since taking over last summer. It says a lot about Tanner’s decision to continue playing first-team football at the seventh tier instead of in the top-flight where he might have only ever played U23 matches. “I went with him to watch a Spurs U23 game and I think it made him think about what his career path would be if he went there,” Russell told the Sussex Express. “What he’s ended up deciding is that going straight from Step 3 of Non-League to a Premier League club would be a step too far. “In some ways it could be seen as a dream move but think about it: What would be his chances of getting in their first team?” That, is what some of those abusive Tottenham fans appear to have not considered. The 15-goal Tanner will have learnt more from Russell and co while playing competitive matches than he would have done in the cosy environment of the Premier League’s U23 league. “What is certain is Ollie’s time will come,” added Fuller. “It may be this summer, it may be in 12 month’s time but there is no doubt he will play at a higher level in the game. “Perhaps if some of those social media abusers watched football at our level on a regular basis they would be less forgiving and more understanding that is isn’t about money in the Non-League game.”

league look The Buildbase FA Vase has to lead the way today with many congratulations to Hamworthy United and equal commiserations to Brockenhurst who went out by the cruellest way possible, the penalty shootout. A crowd of 661 packed into the County Ground to see Hamworthy United beat Southern Counties East side Tunbridge Wells by three goals to one with Bailey Rowe the individual hero with all three goals, while the visitors’ response came deep into second half stoppage time. Brockenhurst travelled to Southern Combination League leaders Littlehampton Town, coming back from 1-0 and then 3-1 down to take the tie to penalties. The Badgers goals came from Silvano Obeng and Christie Ward while the equaliser was scored by Alex Haynes in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time and all this after Shane Murphy saved a penalty in normal time. However, the penalty shootout went very much the Sussex side’s way with the final tally 4-1. And the attendance? A mere 1,276. The position at the top of Division One is every bit as tight as that in the Premier Division and changed little on the day with four of the top five clubs all winning. Bemerton Heath remain on top after comprehensively beating Verwood at Moon Park by 6-0 with Justin Bennett (2), Rudi Plummer, Eddie Perrett, Danny Young and Kane O’Keefe the six shooters. In the early kick off a lone goal from Jordan Browne gave Newport the points at Smallbrook against Fawley – a spirited performance by the visitors – while Follands matched Bemerton by scoring six at Ringwood Town though the visitors did notch a consolation through a Harry Smith penalty. The Follands goals were led by a hat trick for Will Gange with two from Jamie White and a single from Connor Rowe.
52
Andover Town were the only losers going down to a Russell Jones goal for Laverstock & Ford at the Portway with Andover New Street completing the top five with a hard earned 3-1 win at Petersfield. The Street goals – two from Shane Lock and one from Adam Pearson - all came in a five-minute spell midway through the first half with Aaron Akoman replying after the break. Romsey are going through something of a bad run and went down 3-1 at home to Downton with the visitors’ goals coming from Sam Howe with two and Callum Butler. John Cole with the home goal. Three welcome points for East Cowes Vics as they completed the double over Ash United with a best of three goals win at Beatrice Avenue. Sam Cant and Jimmi Burton for Vics and Jordan Devanney with the single strike for Ash. With Infinity’s resignation from the League,
New Milton were left without a game which just leaves the two matches involving the bottom two. Fleet Spurs fared much the better winning 2-1 at Millbrook thanks to goals from Tom White and Ryan Goddard – the Millbrook goal coming from Mark Barker, but Totton & Eling’s struggles continue after they were beaten 5-2 at Whitchurch. Ryan Long with two, Grant Powell, an own goal and Nathan Lynch – a long time since that name last appeared in these columns – for the Jamboys and a brace for Sam Ellis for the Millers. Spurs now have a three-point gap between themselves and their rivals at the bottom.

HOLD THE
Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN Trying to attract more supporters via marketing initiatives is a worthwhile exercise for non-league clubs. Projects like Non-League Day and reduced admission for certain games have their place and have proved very fruitful in most cases. Indeed, their success does raise questions around the pricing structure for football outside of the Football League. If nonleague was cheaper, more people would surely attend games. Coalville from the Southern League launched a £ 5 admission day when they met Hitchin Town on February 5. The response was particularly good, Coalville had an excellent crowd of over 800, with only a dozen or so coming from Hertfordshire. Football for a fiver had clearly appealed to a lot of local folk. However, while filling the ground and creating a buzz, Coalville drew a lot of fans who were unaccustomed to non-league football. It was very noticeable these spectators really did not understand the attraction of the game at this level for those that attend regularly. Non-league, generally, is a more sedate affair, there is a good-natured atmosphere at the majority of grounds and civility tends to dominate. This seemed lost on the horde of fans who concentrated on foul-mouthed abuse of the Hitchin team and the gaggle of supporters who travelled up to Leicestershire. To be honest, the language was worse than any Football League/Premier League ground I have visited in the past few years. Clearly, they were not Coalville fans, for their chanting also included “We hate Forest”, which implied they may well have been Leicester City fans. Nottingham Forest were

hosting Leicester the following day in the FA Cup. It is doubtful they were fans of Coalville, because Forest do not move in their immediate circle of clubs! The Hitchin fans were a little intimidated and their expressions told the locals they were not impressed. “If you don’t like it, f*** off to the way end,” said one fan. Again, this comment only served to confirm the influx was largely unused to the non-league system, where fans change ends to stand behind the goal their team is attacking. Meanwhile, the high-vis gang who were stewarding the game just stood and watched as abuse poured from the terrace. What is the point of employing security staff if they do nothing but grin? It has to be said, there were no prudes among the Hitchin contingent, but essentially, the age group is late 50s, early 60s. In other words, they were not going to trade insults with dozens of teenagers and 20-30 year-olds. They did Coalville no service, which is a great shame as the club itself was as friendly as any non-league outfit. Coalville took a bold decision to cut prices to encourage more local football fans to come along and it worked. Unfortunately, cultural differences undid them to a certain degree, even though they did get the three points. Hitchin have had their own experience of Premier fans turning up and making a nuisance of themselves a few years ago when a gang of Everton supporters, on route to Stevenage for a FA Cup tie, barged their way into Top Field. For those who went to Coalville, they must have returned home appreciating their own club
