THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for this afternoon’s game against our visitor’s East Cowes Victoria.

East Cowes have had a difficult start to the season, but we know they will provide as stern as test as ever, especially with Alex Smith in charge, who I welcome to Foxcotte Park along with his staff, their players and everyone who has made the long journey over from the island this afternoon.

What a week it’s been! We continued our promotion push with a hard-fought victory over Millbrook. The scoreline may have read 6-1, but we were fortunate at times, after making a great start. Ben Rodwell had to make a couple of crucial saves at 2-1 and we also had to weather the storm with ten men, when Scotty Hassell was sin binned!

Credit to the players as they kept going and took our opportunities when Millbrook were reduced to ten, shortly after Scotty returned to the field. Cooky continued his fine goalscoring form and Mikey Davis completed the scoring with a fine free kick late on.

On Tuesday, we travelled to Folland Sports, who have always made life difficult for us over the last few seasons. This time was a totally different story with the lads putting in one of the best displays of the season. We were dominant from start to finish and perhaps could have had even more than the five goals scored that evening.

Results elsewhere have seen us move to the top of the table and that’s where I want us to stay for the remainder of the season.

Newport’s back-to-back defeats have given us a great opportunity to clinch promotion, which was our number one priority this season after last season’s disappointment.

We still have some way to go, starting with this afternoon’s match, as the Vic’s gave us a tough game last month and we still have to travel to Amesbury, who have picked up form recently and Petersfield, who have taken 6 points off Newport this season and beaten them in two cup competitions. The chasing pack won’t give up the fight and so won’t we.

We would not be in this position without the support of our sponsors and I’d like to welcome them all here today and thank them for their continued support. Hopefully we can put on an entertaining match for you this afternoon. I hope you enjoy the day and evening.

Give them your full backing again this afternoon, and let’s make it six in a row.

Enjoy the game.

Words: John Gorman

The Street completed their own happy version of Cowes Week as they followed up their midweek League Cup win at Cowes Sports with a five-nil defeat of East Cowes Vics and three more Division One points.

Street, missing skipper Matt Scott and midweek hat trick hero Ross Cook, were quickly on the front foot with Lloyd Thompson denied by keeper Karl Steinborn-Busse’s legs and Shane Lock an inch or so wide after a clever reverse pass from Luke Hooper.

The Islanders responded, winning a corner that was well claimed by home keeper Sean O’Brien who was then out quickly to beat Jimmi Burton to a through ball before the home side took the lead on eighteen minutes, Hooper chased a long ball down the left and the ball was swiftly moved across the area to Lock and then Reece Rusher who slotted home inside the far post.

New Street were enjoying much the greater share of possession and doubled their score just after the midway point of the half. A quick throw by Thompson found the defender the wrong side of Shane Lock, captain for the day, and the finish past the advancing goalkeeper was clinical.

Goal number three came in the last minute of the half as Steinborne-Busse palmed away a shot from Hooper and Lloyd Thompson steered the loose ball home from a narrow angle.

The second half continued in the same vein and after ten minutes it was four-nil. Owen outstripped the defence and Lock slid the ball home via the inside of the post. Street had four consecutive corners and the fourth saw Hooper tangle with the goalkeeper and the referee produced yellow and red cards in quick succession and the home side were down to ten men.

Harry Lawton had been on the field for less than a minute when meeting a corner at the far post for goal number five, Rusher found the side netting when a square ball would have perhaps had more effect and both Lock and Lawton hit the post before Rusher, seeing the keeper out of his goal, struck the crossbar from the edge of the centre circle.

The home side continued to make light of their numerical disadvantage though they survived a scare when Burton cleverly lobbed O’Brien with the ball cleared off the line.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

It’s a scientific footballing fact that penalty shoot-outs are only enjoyable to watch when you have no skin in the game. Other teams? Bring it on. My team? No, thank you.

I’ve got a long-running agreement with an old school friend to alert one another to televised penalty shoot-outs. Last Saturday was a shoot-out obsessive’s ideal afternoon. Of the eight quarter-final ties in the FA Trophy and FA Vase, six went to penalties.

In the Trophy, Barnet triumphed at Maidstone United 4-3. Gateshead squeezed past National League North Farsley Celtic 4-2 on penalty kicks.

The FA Vase provided a full house, with all four ties going the distance. Holders Newport Pagnell Town continued their defence of the competition – no mean feat in itself – with 4-3 penalties win. Funnily enough, Albie Hall scored his two penalties in the 90 minutes but missed in the shoot-out when he had the chance to win it. I’m sure he won’t mind following their progression. After getting a leveller late on, Ascot United saw off West Didsbury & Chorlton 4-3 in the shoot-out to considerably brighten up their long journey home.

Congleton Town beat Bury AFC 5-4, while Corsham completed the set with a 3-2 win at Peacehaven & Telscombe, who had forced penalties with a 90th-minute leveller.

That’s the thing with the competitions these days, no extratime, it’s straight into the penalty pressure cooker. Views will always vary on whether extra-time should still stand, especially at this late stage of a cup competition. The general consensus has been, consider the number of games played across a season – along with the fixture backlog good cup runs can bring – it’s the right way to go. It would be interesting to drill down into the stats of how many games have been settled on spot-kicks since extra time was scrapped. And has it led to more upsets?

From an away side’s point of view, with no replays, perhaps going straight to penalties helps level the playing field. An extra 30 minutes away from home is a long time to have to defend, especially if there is a big crowd in.

The semis are played across one leg these days too. Personally, I used to quite enjoy the chess match of semis played over two legs. It also brings to memory the time a Poole Town fans’ forum likened Whitley Bay goal machine Paul Chow to a small four-legged horse after their first leg. Of course, he duly hit a hattrick in the second game to book their place at Wembley. Eeyore indeed!

THE NLP PAPER

What are your views on the semifinal set-up? How about neutral grounds like in the FA Cup? When there is so much at stake, the luck of the draw can have a big say when it comes to home advantage. Of course, you can always play for penalties!

THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

In midweek Division One saw Newport IOW score three without reply to maintain top spot- 70 points from 29 games. Downton against Andover New Street was decided by a single goal with around 15 minutes remaining in favour of the Hampshire side. They moved into second spot on the back of this one. Hamworthy Recreation stay fifth having just shared two goals and the points at Amesbury but have a two-point cushion over sixth placed Downton.

Andover New Street returned to the top of the table by going one better over midtable Millbrook. Ross Cook takes the accolades with a four-goal salvo.

Petersfield were another team to enjoy hitting six, but Verwood must feel fairly aggrieved to hit three at home in that same match and not get something out of it. Fleetlands stay seventh ten points behind sixth, but with five games in hand.

Then on Saturday, the promotion race continues apace, four of the top five picked up the three points. The only side to taste defeat was Newport IOW at Magna Road. Hamworthy Recreation came from behind to win 4-1 a win that sees them open up a five-point gap over sixth placed Downton. The Robins went down by the odd goal of three at Whitchurch.

New Milton Town hit five without reply against out of form Folland Sports and are the first in the division to hit a century of goals this term, whilst

The scrap at the other end saw the bottom two both losing, whilst both Amesbury Town and East Cowes Victoria shared two goals and the points in their matches, but Ringwood and Whitchurch both won.

All this means that two wins separate 15th from 19th. The race to avoid the bottom three continues to be a competitive area.
