THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for today’s match against our visitor’s Fawley, and to their Officials, Management, Players and Supporters.

Today’s FA Vase match provides a break from the recent league fixtures but we already are playing catch up after only playing three league fixtures so far this season.

Although we are no where near our peak in regards to performances, we are grinding out results and after Folland Sports losing back to back matches over the past week, it shows that there will be many a twist and turn this season.

We were no where near our best last Saturday, although we created plenty of chances, we could not find the killer third goal that would have killed Ash Utd off. They managed to score what turned out to be a consolation late on but we managed to see the game out.

We can’t win every game pretty and by loads of goals. Sometimes it has to be ugly and that was what last Saturday was.

I can honestly say that this current group of players is the best I have worked with during my time in football. First and foremost, they are brilliant human beings, but they are also hard working and humble, which has given us the platform to have a real chance at achieving something special this season.

The club has been on an upward spiral for a number of years now. We’ve had a lot of successful times and we’ve been at the right end of the table.

All the lads know what I require and demand and the new players on board have bought into what I want straight away. To be honest it feels like the new players we’ve added have been here for years.

The team spirit is amazing which is really pleasing it can take you so far. Combine that with the talent we have in this squad I’m hoping we can emulate what we did last season but just better it that little more.

Our ultimate goal is to win the league and secure promotion and to be completely honest that what I demand and expect from this group of players. Everything is there for them.

Be loud and proud from the stands, this afternoon and enjoy the game. UTS!

“OUR ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO WIN THE LEAGUE AND SECURE PROMOTION AND TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST THAT WHAT I DEMAND AND EXPECT FROM THIS GROUP OF PLAYERS.”

THE GOALKEEPER:

LEE BURCH

A versatile player, who can play up front as well as in goal. Burch has had an illustrious non league career with clubs as Blackfield & Langley, Hythe & Dibden, Romsey Town, Verwood Town, Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Whitchurch United listed as previously played for. Joined Fawley in the 2016 17 season and despite moving to Amesbury Town last season, he quickly returned and made 34 appearances last season, mainly in goal.

THE DEFENDER: REECE MACEY

Started with the Oilers in the 2014 15 season were he made 8 appearances. Macey stayed with Fawley for 5 seasons and made 54 appearances during that time.

He then joined Blackfield & Langley for the 2021 22 season and made 15 appearances before rejoining the Oilers in the summer.

THE MANAGER: ANDY SAMUELS

Andy Samuels stepped back into the management hotseat when he was announces as the new Fawley manager back in May as he replaced Lee Shepherd.

Samuels previous managerial role was at Romsey Town FC where he spent four and a half years, turning them from a bottom of the table side to promotion contenders. They narrowly missed out on automatic promotion twice, before Andy stepped away from football to focus on his young family.

This change in the management team has seen Shepherd move into a committee role, continuing the outstanding work he does building up the club.

THE MIDFIELDER: DECLAN HARTIGAN

Has been a loyal servant at the club for the past 4 seasons. During that time, he has made 96 appearances for the Oilers and scored 26 times.

Very highly rated and continues to attract interest from a number of sides at Wessex level. Will no doubt have an influence on the game this afternoon.

THE STRIKER: KIERON ROCHE

Another player that has stayed loyal with the Oilers. Started with the club back in 2015 and made just 4 appearances before forcing his way into the side and continues to be one of the first names on the team sheet. Has made 83 appearances in total for Fawley and scored 24 goals during the 6 seasons spell he has had at the club.

WATCH OUT FOR… DYLAN KNIGHT

Initially started with Fawley in 2014 and made 40 appearances in his debut season, scoring 11 times. The following season saw limited appearances with just 14 made in the 2015 16 season.

This saw Knight move to Andover Town in 2016 17, but again he only made 6 appearances for the Town, scoring just the 1 goal. Further moves to Lymington Town, Alresford Town and Ringwood Town followed with limited playing time before a move back to the Waterside was made in 2019 where he has stayed since. Last season was the club’s top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions from 35 appearances.

A late Matt Scott winner ensures a 4 3 victory over a spirited Fawley side that took the game to the Street at Foxcotte Park. Fawley lead through a Biffin strike but equalise through Jazz Beavis on 33 minutes, only to fall behind again shortly afterwards when Lilley scores for the Oilers. Scott equalises with a free header on the stroke of halftime. Luke Hooper puts the Street in front shortly after the interval. Fawley respond with their own equaliser from Southwick and with the clock ticking into injury time. Skipper Scott wins the game with another header.

FAWLEY AFC:

The Street were under new management for the 2021/22 season, with Jamie Coleman taking charge and being assisted by John Smith.

After a solid pre season, with just 1 defeat, a narrow 2 1 loss to Salisbury, the Street opened their league campaign with a midweek trip to Whitchurch, due to the Street’s participation in the FA Cup.

The Street dominated the opening period and were rewarded with a Luke Hooper goal after 38 minutes. The

Street should have doubled their lead shortly afterwards, but Lloyd Thompson was off target with an effort that was presented to him following an error in the Whitchurch backline.

The Jam Boys got back on level terms when a disputed free kick was put into the Street area and Declan Shuttleworth rose highest to head home on the stroke of half time. The second half was a completely different, with Whitchurch dominating and deservedly took the points when Dan Parry broke free and clipped his shot over the advancing Chris Wing.

The Street then produced a fine battling performance at Shepton Mallet, taking their step five opponents to a replay with a 0 0 draw, with Street missing a couple of good chances near the end. Unfortunately, they could not repeat that performance in the replay three days later with the Mallet winning 4 0 at Foxcotte Park.

A week later a late Ross Cook effort earned a deserved point at Andover Town, despite being 2 0 down at half time, the Street were creating plenty of opportunities and were well on top. The comeback started late with Cameron Thatcher jinking his way into the box and dispatching a cool finish. Then in the dying seconds Cook picked up a half cleared corner and drilled the ball low into the corner of the net to spark emphatic celebrations.

Returning league members Fleet Spurs were next to come to Foxcotte Park and were seen off thanks to a Luke Hooper hat trick and further goals from Thompson and Lock.

A spirited performance at Moneyfields in the Hampshire Cup, losing 2 0, was quickly forgotten about with a brilliant performance at New Milton Town. The Linnets were unbeaten before that game but were chasing the game as early as the 4th minute when Cook was on target and was quickly doubled in the 30th minute when Thompson’s quick closing down, won him the ball and he finished past the keeper. Hooper then put the Street 3 0 up ten minutes into the second half with a fine counterattack and despite New Milton pulling a goal back and putting pressure on the Street defence, the game was won.

A brilliant 4 3 win at Cowes Sports, with 10 men for over an hour, and a Ross Cook hat trick put the Street deservedly through in the league cup.

Fellow islanders, East Cowes were then beaten 5 0 at Foxcotte Park with goals from Shane Lock (2), Reece Rusher, Lloyd Thompson and substitute Harry Lawton scoring with virtually his first touch, a powerful header from a Street corner. This was despite the dismissal of Luke Hooper.

Further league victories over Petersfield Town and Folland Sports came next before a midweek trip to the Aliport Arena to play Fawley AFC.

Street went straight on to the offensive and in just the second minute the home keeper did well to claw away a shot from Reece Rusher that looked on its way into the net.

However, the deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when Ross Cook blazed home off the post. Street were having the best of the action and Mike Davis had a couple of good efforts well saved by the Fawley goalkeeper.

The Street defence had been solid so far but almost gave the ball away deep inside the penalty area, but Fawley missed the opportunity. Fawley had a number of good chances in the first half and were very much still in the match as the halftime whistle blew.

The second half got underway, with Max Allen replaced by Danny Urry and the pace started to pick up but still very little goalmouth action.

The time went by and then unfortunately Sean O'Brien went down and had to hobble off and Mike Weatherall came on.

The Street faithful were getting nervous as one goal is never enough and Fawley sensed they were in with a chance of getting something out of the game.

Then Reece Rusher was sent to the Sin Bin after dissent with the Referee. Weatherall had to make a double save to keep us in front but then from the following corner, a header from the unmarked Tom Raferty levelled things up.

With the Street down to 10 men and Fawley now pushing for a winner, the game could have easily gone away from the Street, but then the Referee decided, after consulting the linesman, that Ross Cook had been fouled in the penalty area.

Cook stepped up and stroked the ball home into the bottom right corner and we were somewhat fortunate to be in front again.

Rusher came back on after his enforced visit to the sin bin. However, Lewis Alderman then went down and had to be replaced by Adam Pearson.

Time was running out and Fawley threw everybody forward in a desperate bid to earn a point, but that became fatal when Rusher sent Cook free, and he made no mistake with his effort past the advancing Coombs.

Fawley’s afternoon was even more disappointing when Tom Munday received a red card in the closing minutes, after a skirmish that ended with Danny Urry receiving a yellow card.

Ross Cook slots home to complete his hat-trick.

“We didn’t play well but it was never about the performance today. After two draws recently from winning positions, today was all about getting the three points.

“We struggled last season to win ugly at times. Today was one of those occasions that we just wanted to get the win and move on.”

STREET 2 ASH UTD

The Street got back to winning ways in the league after recent draws with Fawley and New Milton.

Ash Utd were quick on the break but looking susceptible at the back and both Josh and Aaron Moore were crowded out in a scramble caused by confusion between the keeper and his defence. But they failed to learn from the confusion and after fourteen minutes goalkeeper Adrian Giles made an absolute hash of a back pass and Josh Moore cleverly turned the ball in to the vacant net.

New Street doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime. Davis crossed from the right, goalkeeper Giles did not get enough on his attempted punch and Josh Moore fired the loose ball low into the corner of the net.

In the second half finally, Ash found a gap in the home defence, the ball was crossed from the left and Kareem Foster swept it past Baxter, leaving the home side facing a crucial six minutes plus. Street held on despite Ash throwing everyone forward in the latter stages.

LOSERS CAN BE HEROES TOO…

How often do you hear today that somebody declares they deserve success because they want it so badly? Wanting something doesn’t mean you deserve to be rewarded, “want” is often a symptom of greed, of entitlement and more than a touch of arrogance. Success has to be earned and the problem for the aggressively driven folk in society, they are up against similarly minded people that also feel they “deserve” accolades because they crave the recognition. In a world where instant gratification, impatience and the need to win attention seems to dominate so many people’s lives, life has become a competition. It may have always been like that, but now we have the means to command and control that attention.

Football is such a game of narrow margins that success balances on a tightrope. I always recall somebody, when referring to a club stalwart of an under achieving club as a “born winner”. My response was, “how can he be, he’s played for this single club all his career and won nothing of significance. Don’t you mean, he wants to be a winner?”. Everyone in football wants to be a winner, from the humblest club to the behemoth that needs to win something every single season. It cannot be done, because one goal can change a match, a final, a season, a career. Simple fact: not everyone can be a winner, even if by making cup competitions more and more like leagues (a la Champions League) removes some of the uncertainty.

It is Liverpool’s misfortune that City are that little bit better, hence denying them what would normally be a period of dominance. Although Liverpool haven’t won the Premier League more than once, their current team will be remembered forever as Champions League winners, but also as the team that ran City close.

It is getting harder and harder for “nearly men” to get the plaudits they deserve because the focus is on winning those prizes we deserve because we want them so much. This intense belief that only the word “success” will do extends beyond sport, where ludicrous expressions like “deferred success” are used to pacify and appease those that cannot reach the level they need. In corporate life, so often the real issues are kicked down the road because people just don’t want to tell someone they are not up to the task, they are underperforming or simply the wrong person for the job.

In recent times, we have seen two incredibly talented teams, Manchester City and Liverpool, slug it out at the top of the Premier League, thrashing minnows, winning game after game. A ME OF THE PEOPLE

Page 31 G

Somewhere we have lost the ability to see near success as anything other than failure, the team that reached the final but ran out of steam or the over performing side that just wasn’t good enough. Does losing the league title by one point or goal difference make the team that came top so much better? It’s true that league tables rarely lie, but they can also illustrate there is more than one very decent team.

Knockout competitions and World Cups are different, even if by making cup competitions more and more like leagues (a la Champions League) removes some of the uncertainty.

While leagues invariably deliver silverware to the best teams, cup competitions are exposed to the luck of the draw, the misfortune of the goalkeeper with oily gloves or the defender who slips up at a vital moment. A game of 90 minutes can change history how would football have developed, for example, if teams like Austria 1934, Hungary 1954, Netherlands 1974 and 1978 and Brazil 1982 had triumphed instead of losing in heart breaking fashion? The world wept with these losing sides, for they epitomised the beautiful game.

At Queens Park Rangers and Ipswich Town, clubs that have never had bulging trophy cabinets, their most revered teams are those

that didn’t win the prize they coveted. Rightly so, for these teams played wonderful football that excited neutrals up and down the country.

Do we focus too much on winning and allow just a tiny fraction of teams onto the podium? Consider that there are 92 Premier/Football League clubs, a huge number. How many of these can be successful in any given season, and by that we mean, trophies and promotion?

If you count qualifying for Europe as a prize, and it should be, then 18 clubs of the 92 (20%) can look upon the 2021 22 season as a year of success. Others will consider staying in a division due to their circumstances as an achievement. Do we need more “winners” or does creating a community where, to quote the 1970s band Hot Chocolate, “everyone’s a winner, baby”, merely dilutes the essence of success?

The Great Uncrowned (ISBN: 9781801501774), published by Pitch Publishing, is the story of some of these footballing bridesmaids. It’s not meant to be definitive, although readers will recognise some of the very fine sides featured, but it is most definitely meant to be a tribute to the players and teams that should have been more decorated. WESSEX LEAGUE LATEST NEWS

Brett Pitman crowned his competitive AFC Portchester debut with the only goal in the Wessex League win over Cowes Sports.

The former Portsmouth fans favourite had been in prolific pre season form since his sensational arrival in the ninth tier of English football. And after nine goals in friendly action, Pitman headed in a 77th minute winner to get the pre season Wessex Premier title favourites off to a triumphant start. Pitman showed great movement to make himself a yard of room to nod in a left wing cross.

‘It was a difficult first game,’ said assistant boss Gavin Spurway. ‘Maybe there were a bit of nerves. The first game is always a bit nervy, whatever anyone says. Cowes defended well, but I always felt we were going to score, we were creating chances. It was the sort of game last season that we might not have ended up winning. That’s why we signed Brett Pitman, to do what he does.’

Pitman, 34, has hit the ground running at Portchester after being released by Bristol Rovers at the end of last season. Last Tuesday night’s header was his first competitive goal since netting for Eastleigh in a 5 3 National League loss at Solihull in March during a loan spell.

‘He’s come in, he listens, he’s got his head down, he wants to be involved in everything, he speaks to the players, gives them advice,’ Spurway added. ‘I’ve been nothing but impressed with him so far. He’s given 110 per cent and he’s scored goals that’s the main reason we signed him. If you give him chances, he will score. He had two last night and scored once long may it continue.’

Portchester started with another new signing, ex Bognor and Gosport player Ashton Leigh, in a three man backline alongside Sam Pearce and Curt Da Costa. Pitman partnered Felipe Barcelos up front.

Spurway had to make an early change when Tyler Giddings, who was playing right midfield, went off with a calf injury. Liam Robinson came in for a direct swap.

Second minute red card for goalkeeper McGeorge blows Moneyfields’ plans ‘out of the window’ in opening day Wessex League defeat at Horndean

Rudi Blankson struck a debut winner for Horndean as Moneyfields’ pre match plans were ‘completely blown away’ inside two minutes of the Wessex League curtain raiser.

Moneys were reduced to 10 men early on when goalkeeper Callum McGeorge was red carded for a rash challenge on Blankson outside the area.

Striker Dec Seiden was sacrificed for defender Corey Heath after Tom Cain volunteered to don the gloves.

Numerical parity was restored before half time when Horndean skipper Sam Hookey was sent off for two yellows.

NEWPORT’S FINN SMITH BECOMES

YOUNGEST GOALSCORER IN FA CUP HISTORY

Fleetlands have already been exposed to the harsh realities of life at a higher level of the non league pyramid.

The Coptermen only conceded seven goals in their final nine fixtures en route to finishing third in last season’s Hampshire Premier League. On being rewarded with promotion to Wessex 1, they have started 2022/23 by conceding eight times in two games. A 4 0 loss at last season’s runners up Andover New Street was followed by a 4 3 defeat at Ash last weekend.

Fleetlands trailed 4 0 at Ash before netting three times in the final 15 minutes through Kai Sterne, Jamie Wrapson and Cameron Stone. Sterne then went through one on one with the home keeper in the dying seconds, only to fail to complete a stunning recovery act. ‘It’s already clear that if you make a mistake it’s punished, and we have to take our chances,’ said boss Dan Greenwood.

The side who finished in place last season and missed out on promotion to the Wessex League Premier Division, made it 2 wins in 4 days thanks to goals from Jordan Browne, Connor Kelly and 16 year old substitute Finn Smith who was making his debut for the club since signing the day before (Friday) on his 16th birthday.

In scoring, it is believed that as far as records suggest, Smith made history as the youngest goal scorer in the competition at 16 years and 1 day.

‘If you made those mistakes in the Hampshire League you could get away from them. It’s been a learning curve, a baptism of fire. There’s lots of work on but lots of positives. It’s a relatively new group and we’re still gelling.’

‘You could see why Andover finished second last season, but we created just as much as them. Of the eight goals we’ve conceded, we’ve gifted teams five of them. The biggest positive is we’re creating chances. With our togetherness, our workrate and desire, we would have been good value for a point at Ash, if not all three. And I don’t think they could have argued with that.’

Fleetlands host their first Wessex home game since 2006/07 this Saturday against Totton & Eling. The Eels finished last season bottom of the table, winning just two of their 36 fixtures. But they lifted the curtain on 2022/23 with a 3 1 win at Romsey, former Baffins Milton Rovers youngster Owen Pelham in their starting XI. Fleetlands are without suspended pair Sterne and Callum Dart. Sterne is serving a suspension imposed for an offence last season, while Dart was sent off following an altercation with a member of the Ash management team.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WITH MATT BADCOCK - EDITOR NLP

Is this the week the weather officially ‘turned’? Where you feel that chill when you wake up in the morning and, most importantly, need to have a good think about which coat to wear to a game?

For me, it won’t be long before it’s thermals on and handwarmers in the pocket when I head out to a game. At home, though, the heating remains in the OFF position!

Of course, cost of living and rising energy prices have dominated the airwaves and how the country combats it is a big priority sat in the new Prime Minister’s in tray.

Whether it’s in the supermarket, at the fuel pumps or in your home, the large majority of us will have noticed how the costs have been rising in our daily lives.

Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris recently penned a piece for The NLP around the potential impact on clubs and put across his thoughts on how clubs may need to adapt.

But how will your own habits change? Is your spend at a Non League ground a non negotiable or is it a luxury outgoing you may have to trim back on?

We’ve teamed up with the guys at The Football Supporters’ Association to get an idea of what fans are thinking with an exclusive survey.

The aim is to get some really good data that the FSA can feed back into the game and help leagues and clubs going forward into the winter. Will rising costs affect your match attendance both home and away or will you spend less at the burger bar?

The survey also asks fans their view on potential cost saving measures such as earlier kick offs, so floodlights don’t need to be used, tickets and potential price increases or partial closure of parts of stadiums to reduce running costs on concession stands.

Andy Walsh, head of the national game at the FSA, said: “Non League clubs are warning that without assistance the increase in energy prices and the effect of high inflation will create unmanageable financial pressures throughout the game, putting some clubs' futures in jeopardy.

“This survey in partnership with The Non League Paper will gather supporters’ views and help in our discussions with the football authorities and leagues, providing real data on how the rising cost of living is impacting fans, and help clubs navigate these difficult times.” We’d love to hear your thoughts to get a really good overview of the whole National League System.

The survey is now open and can be filled out by visiting the link below. The NLP will then report the results next month.

THE WESSEX LEAGUE REVIEW

First mention must go to Laverstock & Ford who bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup after a single goal defeat at National League South Taunton. The one goal, early in the first half, proved decisive but proof of the Wessex League side’s stirring performance was the naming of the home goalkeeper as Man of the Match for a display that included saving a second half penalty. The Taunton Twitter Feed included the line “They threw everything at us, but their run ended at the Cygnet Ground. Best of luck to Laverstock & Ford for the rest of the season.” Deserved praise.

On the League front the top two in the Premier Division march on, both still with 100% records, Bemerton Heath Harlequins defeated AFC Stoneham 5 1 at Moon Park with goals from Kane O’Keefe, Danny Young, Reece Rusher, Ronan Clancy and George Higgins. Scott Hills scored the Stoneham consolation, and it must be a long time since they conceded five.

AFC Portchester went one better by scoring six without reply at Alresford, three in each half. As with Bemerton the goals were shared around with James Cowan two, Ryan Wilkins, George Barker, Sam Pearce and Brett Pitman on the scoresheet. Hamble Club stay in third place after a best of three goals win at US Portsmouth. Shawn Benjamin scored the home goal with Braydon Douglas and Ben Roles scoring the Hamble goals.

Two goals from Zack Willett gave Horndean the points at Blackfield & Langley who are still seeking their first point, and there was a similar score line just up the road at Hythe & Dibden where goals from Luke Burbidge and Addwell Chipangura gave Shaftesbury the points.

Fareham look as though they are having another season like the last, whereby they either score goals at will or concede them. This week it was the latter as the much improved Bournemouth won 5 0 at Cams Alders. Joe Freak led the way with two while singles came from Lewis Harvey, Joe Smith and Neemo Nixon.

Baffins Milton Rovers came from a goal down at half time to beat Christchurch 3 2 thanks to goals from Kelvin Robinson, Brad Gale and Alpay Ali with Eder Batista adding to his tally with both the visitors’ goals.

Cowes Sports continued their poor away run with a 3 0 loss at Brockenhurst, Mitch Speechley Price with two and debutant Ethan Hartness with the goals, and finally a good win for Portland coming from 2 1 down at home to Moneyfields to win 3 2. Liam Sayers with a double and Ben Morris for the home side and Callum Laycock and James Franklyn for the Moneys.

A change at the head of Division One with New Milton Town taking over top spot after their 7 0 win at luckless Fleet Spurs. They were four up at the break with, overall, Tyrell Sampson notching a hat trick, Ben Cooper two; plus, Luke Stone and George Deem contributed one apiece.

Andover Town are second after an impressive 2 0 win at the previous leaders Follands, courtesy of goals from Matt Morris and Dave Jerrard but early leaders Ringwood went down again losing 4 2 at Fleetlands. The home goals came from Jamie Winter, George Gregory and two from Dale Mason. Harrison Clarke and Joe Manley were later reported as being the Ringwood scorers.

Petersfield went down to a surprise 2 1 loss at home to Hamworthy Recreation, a win that will much help the new boy’s confidence and they can thank Chris Long and James King for the goals. Kieran Alcock scored the lone Rams goal.

Newport showed they are going to be a force to be recognised with again this season with a 5 2 win at Romsey with two goals from Joe Butcher and singles from Joe Craig, Josh Younie and Connor Kelly. Jack Odam continued his present scoring streak with both the home goals.

Downton remain very much in contention after coming from two goals down to win 3 2 at Totton and Eling. Kris Krystofowicz with two and Tom Rafferty for the visitors and Harrison Yeadon and Sam Ellis for the Millers.

Andover New Street, like Newport, catching up on games, won 2 1 at home to Ash with Josh Moore netting both goals and Kareem Foster notching a late goal for the visitors.

Millbrook followed up their win on Monday by defeating Verwood 4 2 at Potterne Park; Ben Baddams, Mark Barker with a pair and Morgan Callaway eventually named as hitting the target. Josh Haynes and Bailey Tabor with the home goals.

Dylan Knight and Jack Stuttard scored for Fawley against one from Tyler Rutten for Amesbury and goals from Kieran Rodgers and Craig Rutledge gave Whitchurch the points at East Cowes Vics.
