ANDOVER NEW STREET - v – FLEETLANDS FC 02/08/2022 | FOXCOTTE PARK
THE MANAGER Good evening and a warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for tonight’s opening game of the season against our visitor’s Fleetlands, and to their Officials, Management, Players and Supporters.
Pre-season has been good with the lads getting valuable minutes under their belts and more importantly we have come through the period with very few injuries.
After the exceptional effort and performance last season and being so close to being promoted, this evening’s match represents a significant part of the club’s history, and for myself, staff and players it gives us an enormous amount of pleasure to be able to be part of it.
I mentioned earlier about new faces coming to the club and I’d like to personally welcome George Baxter, Eddie Perrett, Scott Hassell, Josh Moore, Arran Moore and George Hallahan, some experienced players that have not only come and in freshened the squad but have completely endorsed the way we want to play.
However, the game itself is the most important thing and we must focus on the game in a professional manner. Fleetlands stand between us tonight, and they are a club who have done brilliantly in recent years, rising back up the leagues to be back playing in the Wessex League, where they were in 2007. They are a progressive football club and I have no doubt that this evening’s game will be another tough one. Over the summer we have seen several players come into the club and thankfully only one noticeable leaver in Reece Rusher. May I take this opportunity to wish Reece all the best as he continues his playing career with Bemerton Heath. I’m really pleased to keep the nucleus of the squad together, which for prolonged periods over a tough season saw us produce some 5-star performances. I’m especially pleased to retain the younger players – Cam Thatcher, Joe Rogers and Josh Jeffery, who are all the future of the club.
We have one simple target, which is promotion. I believe the squad of players we have here are more than capable of achieving wonderful things but it’s going to take hard work and ability to get there, starting with tonight’s game. Can I also say that your support last season was exceptional. To have the highest average attendance for the division and some of the travelling support has been memorable, anyone remember Cribbs away? So please continue to get behind us. Enjoy the game.
PRE-SEASON HAS BEEN GOOD WITH THE LADS GETTING VALUABLE MINUTES UNDER THEIR BELTS AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WE HAVE COME THROUGH THE PERIOD WITH VERY FEW INJURIES.
Buy a 50/50 ticket at tonight’s game to stand a chance of winning a cash prize

Welcome to
Fleetlands FC After securing promotion from the Hampshire Premier last season, Fleetlands fans are optimistic about the season ahead. Going into tonight’s opening game of the season, Fleetland fans are eyeing a successful season in the Wessex League 1. KEVIN PIPKIN looks at the Fleetlands squad on show this evening.
Fleetlands boss Dan Greenwood has made a number of new signings - Jay Morris, ex-Hayling right-back Ben Metherell and Moneyfields centre half Stanlie Hopkins among them. Morris will challenge Joe Boxall for the goalkeeper’s jersey, with Greenwood still undecided who will feature against Street tonight as ‘neither has done anything wrong in pre-season.’ Three players have come from Fareham Town - Kai Stearne, Callum Archer and Cameron Stone - while right-back Jack Farrier, who played for
Chichester City’s first team last term, is the most recent new face. Former Baffins attacker Callum Dart is permanently a Copterman now - he was dual signed in 2021/22 - while another ex-Wessex Premier regular, striker Mark Smith, is fully fit. Smith - who struck 24 goals for Horndean in 2016/17 - belted a hat-trick in a pre-season win against Bosham. George Gregory, who made a big impact after following
Greenwood from Hayling United to Lederle Lane (now rebranded as Powder Monkey Park) last December, is another goal threat. But strike pair Kelvin Robinson and Alpay Ali have linked up with higher tier Baffins, while ex-Baffins winger Callum Smith has also left the squad which finished third in last season’s HPL Senior Division. Robinson fired 19 goals in just 13 league starts last term, while Ali - once of Gosport Borough struck nine times in 13 league outings.
We would like to welcome tonight’s visitors to Foxcotte Park

THE CAMERA NEVER LIES
The Tadley Calleva keeper claims a high ball into the box during our pre-season encounter last Wednesday evening. The Street would score three times in the second half with goals from Arran Moore, Shane Lock and Josh Moore, who lobbed the keeper from 35 yards, to ensure the Street’s pre-season ended in a victory.
MEGAN HARRISON How did you get into football?
Do you have a matchday routine?
Who is your favourite footballer and why?
What music are you into?
Favourite film?
What do you do to relax?
Biggest fear?
If you had to have a superhero power, which one would you choose? I feel like being able to move things with your mind would be quite good. I’m not sure I’d want to read minds though and then think ‘I didn’t want to know that!’
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what is the one thing you’d bring with you? I’m a big fan of food so some kind of food to keep me going, probably a packet of digestives! That’ll keep me sorted!

ANDOVER NEW STREET - v – FLEETLANDS FC 02/08/2022 | FOXCOTTE PARK
THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW Another season, the 37th in Wessex League history, with two unfinished of course, and as is the custom of late, a midweek start to ensure that those Clubs involved in the FA Cup on the first Saturday in August have a competitive match under their belts before embarking on the Wembley trail. Taking the Premier Division matches in alphabetical order, AFC Portchester entertain Cowes Sports and as favourites for the title in many eyes they should start with a win. Baffins Milton Rovers host Hamble Club in a fixture that has been reversed from the original listing. The Portsmouth based Club enjoyed a strong start to last season before falling away in the second half but should start this time round with the three points. Newly promoted Bemerton Heath Harlequins travel to Blackfield & Langley and will be hoping for at least a share of the spoils while based on last season’s form Brockenhurst should be too strong for Christchurch in the New Forest. Fareham scored goals for fun on occasions last season but were also prone to conceding at the other end, and AFC Stoneham may well come out on top at Cams Alders. The Match of the Evening could well be at Five Heads Park where Horndean meet Moneyfields. The Deans were there or thereabouts all last season and will be hoping to improve on their eventual fourth place while the visitors have title ambitions of their own. Should be a healthy attendance as well. Hythe & Dibden avoided relegation last time with a storming finish to the season and welcome Laverstock & Ford
who gained promotion through the Play Off system and the result could go either way. New boys Pagham, who have moved over from the Southern Combination League, could start their campaign with a home victory at the expense of U.S. Portsmouth and it also may well be a home victory at Portland United where Bournemouth are the visitors. Finally, Shaftesbury, third last season as well as being League Cup Winners, will be looking for a similar campaign and could get off to a successful start against visitors Alresford Town. As stated earlier, three games in Division One involving the three Clubs who missed out on promotion at the playoff stage. Newport IOW travel to Ash United, who fell away last season after a good start, and the three points could go back to the Island while Andover New Street travel to Fleetlands for a game which in a sense is a step in the dark for both Clubs. It will be the home Club’s first game back in the Wessex League after an absence of 16 seasons and also the first ever meeting between the two sides. Too many imponderables to suggest a result. Lastly Folland Sports entertain Fawley in what, based on last season, should be a home win. Good wishes to all for the evening and of course the season ahead.

THE LAST WORD
WITH NEIL JENSON EDITOR OF GAME OF THE PEOPLE
Post-match interviews are very anodyne. You could almost write the script yourself. Sometimes you wonder why TV channels bother to “get a few words from…” the managers of both sides. They are never going to give anything away, rarely going to admit to seeing a key incident and will never point to a weakness in their side. Punditry has gone the same way, full of safe comments, cliché and jargon, and the big problem we have today is the fake intimacy that pundits have with players and coaches, referring to them by their first names rather than keeping it professional. What does this do? Only makes it harder to make an objective comment about a game, because we’re all mates. The football professionals know that without their input, much of the activity on our TV channels is wasted. So, any contentious questions are batted away, or met with a “lost in translation” response. How often do you see a coach pretend he didn’t hear the interviewer’s question when he’s asked something hinting at mistakes made by a team or players, or even the coach himself? It’s a clever tactic to diffuse or distract the course of the interview. The media have their favorite managers and players, indeed teams. Going back in time, Sir Alf Ramsey could never have won a popularity contest if he tried, largely because he refused to pander to anyone. Likewise, Don Revie was never appreciated because his team was a bunch of “outsiders” who didn’t belong to the football establishment. Bill Shankly could never do anything wrong, and neither could Matt Busby. Page
14
Brian Clough was great copy, but he kept interviewers on their toes. They loved him when things were going well, but equally, when they didn’t, they also made the most of it. In the case of Clough, Mourinho, Revie and Ramsey, schadenfreude was definitely the name of the game. Today, everyone seems besotted with Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, although both have shown they can become very prickly when asked difficult but pertinent questions. Although both manage elitist clubs, hence success is almost a given, there is an intense fascination and a little mystique around both men. In the case of Guardiola, he doesn’t seem like a football man with his tech bro appearance and slightly aloof demeanor. Klopp is more conventional in that respect, but he has the aura of a happy, wealthy European businessman with a good dentist from a wellheeled Bavarian town. It’s easy to be fascinated with both managers. There are 20 managers in the Premier, but only a small number get the bulk of the attention, because outside of the top two or three, the rest are just a couple of results away from the sack. No wonder they seem scared to say anything of consequence.
