THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for this afternoon’s game against our visitor’s Millbrook.

Millbrook have had a difficult start to the season, but we know they will provide as stern as test as ever, especially with Dave Herbert in charge, who I welcome to Foxcotte Park along with his staff, their players and everyone else who has travelled.

It goes without saying that we are in really good place having put back to back to back wins together following our defeat to Newport, recording an eleventh win away from home at Downton on Tuesday evening.

I was so pleased with the way we played here against Fleet Spurs a couple of weeks ago in our last home game, when I thought we were excellent, especially in the second half.

We carried that on with a terrific result away at Verwood last Saturday. Although at times we were not at our very best. We showed great resilience to come back twice and then Cooky produced that bit of magic to win us the game with only a few minutes to spare.

Against Downton we came up against a strong side, without a few key players and were forced to play Harry Lawton at centreback. To Harry’s credit, he played exceptionally well and was first to everything the Robins had to throw at us and was one of the best players on the pitch that night.

We have an environment in which players are encouraged to learn and grow, and they will have tough nights. But with ours and your support, they come through to keep helping this club progress and I’m proud of players like Harry and Cam Thatcher.

Give them your full backing again this afternoon, and let’s make it four in a row.

Enjoy the game.

30th October 2021, Wessex League 1

Words: John Gorman

This was the first ever meeting between the two clubs with Millbrook new to the League this season, and they showed why they are mid table and how well they have adapted to Wessex League football, and well deserved their share of the points.

Street started the better and Ross Cook was narrowly wide from a corner, but it was the visitors who created the first chance as the home defence looked for the offside flag following a long clearance, the flag never came, and keeper Sean O’Brien blocked Mark Barker’s effort with his legs. Forward two minutes and the next attack was more successful as the ball was worked down the left and Perry Harding rose the highest to glance the cross into the far corner. insufficient force – and Barker was too high when he fastened on to another long clearance.

Street replaced a limping Danny Urry with Reece Rusher as the half neared it’s close and the substitute’s first act was to provide a cross from which Ross Cook headed the home side level seconds before the half time whistle.

Kitcher, Frampton, Baddams, King, Harvey,? Parker, Lavender, Goodwin, Barker, Drake,? Harding?

Millbrook scored in the first minute of the second half with the goal of the game. Mark Barker picked the ball up on the right touchline, turned inside the defender and curled his shot over O’Brien and into the far top corner of the net. Street had obviously been told to reduce the space allowed to the Millbrook midfield but need a fine O’Brien save to prevent Harding adding a third.

Mikey Davis replaced Phillips and made an immediate impact, He combined with Lee Morris down the left, pulled the ball back from the bye line and Rusher slotted it past Kitcher to level the scores again. Four minutes later and the game was turned on its head as Kitcher parried a fierce drive from Shane Lock, but his defence stood still and Lock was quickest to the loose ball, The keeper then made a similar save from Rusher.

Barker was narrowly wide with a snapshot on the turn and a Davis cross drifted across an unguarded goal with no black and green shirts in reach,

The game had just moved into stoppage time when a Millbrook arrack on the left was halted by a challenge, the referee said penalty and there were few complaints leaving Ben Baddams to coolly slot the spot kick into the bottom corner to seal a point

MATCH ACTION

“It was a wonderful performance, especially second half. Downton made life very difficult for us and we expected that with them being at home. Second half we were aggressive, we pressed, we took our opportunity from a set-piece and defended well.”

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WITH JON COUCH – NLP REPORTER

Last week, Paul Fairclough unveiled an England C squad with a difference for this month’s clash with Wales C at Altrincham’s Moss Lane.

Mindful of the time of year and the pressures that come with the business end of the season at either end of the table, the wily Young Lions chief has opted to select one player from each of the 24 National League clubs, plus Worthing goalkeeper Harrison Male. It’s a strategy which tells you all you need to know about the 73-year-old who is now in his 21st year in charge of the Young Lions.

Looking to avenge a humbling 4-0 defeat to the same opposition 12 months ago, Fairclough could have been well forgiven for raiding big guns Wrexham and Notts County for their finest English talent in a bid to settle the score.

This way, however, the former Barnet and Stevenage coach has shown equal respect to all quarters ahead of the final quarter of the season, but can integrate a new, dynamic squad for the future. while keeping the club bosses on side. But try naming a National League team without an abundance of talented players these days.

Fairclough’s provisional 25-man squad – which will be reduced to 16 this week - is jam-packed full of the top performers at Step 1 this season and offers plenty of hope for redemption on Tuesday March 21. Only one of the 25 have been capped by the Young Lions before, Solihull Moors midfielder Joe

Sbarra, while the average age has dropped to 23, from 27 this time last year. The squad also includes Notts County’s 33-goal striker Macaulay Langstaff who, aged 26, is the oldest member of the party.

“It’s the first time I’ve selected a squad on this basis,” Fairclough told The NLP. “I’ve been doing this for 21 years and I know the pressures on clubs at this time of year, no matter how high in the pyramid they are.

“I’m mindful that this is a tremendously important time of the season so I’ve decided to select just the one player from each Nation[1]al League team so no manager is affected more than any other.

“It will make team bonding more necessary within the squad, but that is what England C is all about. It helps form friends for life. I know players still close friends 20 years later, that bond stays with you.”

In the 21 years Fairclough and his backroom team have taken over the reins, no fewer than 200 players have gone to play in the Football League or higher. One of them, Ethan Pinnock, scored for Brentford against Fulham in the Premier League on Monday night.

And I wouldn’t mind waging you that every single one of the 200+ will point to their England C experience as pivotal to their success.

THE NLP PAPER

And then there’s Fairclough himself. At 73, he’s as motivated as ever to give these players that springboard for success – and then there’s his personal pride as well.

THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

The quest for promotion from Division One almost changes with each game as we get closer to the end of term.

The week started with Hamworthy Recreation moving into a playoff berth with an emphatic 4-0 win at Totton & Eling. The Tuesday then saw wins for Andover New Street and Downton put them back on track, the Robins win ending Petersfield’s long run of good form.

Then, Wednesday it was New Milton Town who came from two behind to win 4-2 on the road at Whitchurch United to reclaim second spot.

Amesbury Town’s battle to stay in Division One saw them gain a 1-0 win over Fawley with both East Cowes Victoria and Fleet Spurs both losing on their travels.

After Saturday’s results in Division One, just two points separate the top three, so the title race shows no sign of slowing down.

Current leaders Newport IOW won convincingly at Whitchurch. New Milton beat bottom side Fleet Spurs 3-1 and Andover New Street came through on their travels by the odd goal of five at Verwood- Ross Cook helping himself to a hat trick in the process.

Also hitting a hat trick was Chris Long for Hamworthy Recreation, as they hit six without reply against Follands. The fact that both Downton and Petersfield came unstuck has certainly made the jostling for the four playoff places very interesting. Fleet Spurs look increasingly likely to finish in the wooden spoon place- the other two slots see six clubs separated by just six points. Amesbury did themselves a massive favour with a 3-1 win over Ash, a six pointer perhaps; especially with both Ringwood and Whitchurch tasting defeat on their own patches.
