JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s encounter against Romsey Town in Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Romsey management, their players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover today. Romsey have made a great start to the season and like us will have their eye on promotion this season. Today’s game promises to be an exciting match and from my viewpoint, the lads have will want to build on three successful wins. We were also gutted to hear about Danny Urry’s leg injury. Dan had only just forced his way into the side and was looking like his old self, hopefully he will back sooner rather than later but with all injuries it takes time and rest – I for one know all about the frustrations of not being out there helping your team-mates out in the heat of battle.

Massive Fixture Recently we travelled to Fawley and I must say the performance wasn’t great but we got the job done, I’d take a 3-1 win away from home in any fixture. At the end of the season we will look at results not how we played.

Sadly the performance rolled over to Laverstock…where, to be honest neither team looked like doing anything but then Lavvy scored and we completely crumbled, by far our worst performance of the season, it was really disappointing and a big bump back down to earth after being unbeaten in the league since the opener. Somehow I had to get the lads up for what was our biggest game in New Street’s recent history, an FA Vase away trip to Cribbs FC in the first round proper! Well they didn’t disappoint. I changed the shape and personnel slightly and tried to get them to play a way that could have a chance against a side that were top of the league above! I’d watched quite a lot on YouTube of Cribbs and got an idea of how they’d play, I went with what I thought could counter that and it worked, the lads were fantastic. We wanted it far more than them and sometimes it comes down to that, they didn’t have an answer to what we threw at them. Thanks once again for your support on Tuesday, hopefully we can put in another great performance this afternoon with plenty of goals. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for our second home game in the space of five days. Welcome to our friends from Romsey, who will no doubt bring a large following with them as they always do and hopefully make it a cracking atmosphere today.

The same could be said for the Ringwood game last Saturday. The pitch was in perfect condition but the weather wasn’t the greatest with a blustery wind but we got off to a great start through Shane Lock’s superb strike.

It’s been a very hectic week but it’s also been an enjoyable one! The game against Downton wasn’t the greatest of performances but we did enough to earn the three points. No one will remember the performances if we get promoted this season. We will just remember the points we picked up and it’s the sign of a good side if we can pick up 3 points when we are not playing well.

The league is still close with no team running away with it following Bemerton’s recent blip of two defeats in their last 2 matches. It shows that anyone can beat anyone on the day or evening and that no side can take the opposition for granted.

6

Unfortunately, we couldn’t add that second goal that would have made the game safe but we did restrict Ringwood to long range chances, which Paddy had no problems with. It was pleasing to keep back-to-back clean sheets especially when you consider that Ringwood had recently taken 3 points of Bemerton and also scored 5 times past them.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

After not having a home game for awhile, then we have back-toback home games and even more games to come in what is a hectic month with 5 home games in a row after our trip to Ringwood last Saturday.

“TUESDAY’S RESULT WAS EVEN THE MORE PLEASING AS ANDOVER WERE ON A DECENT RUN AND HAD PICKED UP CLUB OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER.”

We knew Millbrook would make it tough for us and they kept the ball really well, especially when they took an early lead. It took us most of the first half to get going and when we finally did we took our opportunity to score through Cookie. Having got back into the game just before half-time, it was really disappointing to concede in the fashion that we did straight after the restart of the second half. A change from the management and we looked and felt a lot better shape wise and were able to put the Millbrook defence under more pressure and it told with Reece being presented with a tap in from close range.

Having aving defended so well against ainst Cribbs the week before it was gutting to concede the late penalty with virtually no time to respond.

We certainly put that result behind us when we have beaten Downton, Ringwood and also a comprehensive win over rivals Andover Town on Tuesday night. night Tuesday’s result was even the more pleasing as they were on a decent run and had picked up club of the month onth for October. We need to continue to work hard and that’s something I hope is evident to everyone watching. We have some important games in November that could really shape s our season. We also have an FA Vase se tie to look forward too as well but we must take it a game at a time starting this afternoon. Please get behind us again this afternoon, your vocal support can make a difference differe today. Most importantly, enjoy njoy the game and stay safe.

We were well on the front foot and got ourselves in front thanks to Lockey’s sharpness and reactions while everyone else just stopped, he was quickly onto the rebound after his first effort was parried out.

welcome ROMSEY TOWN

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Romsey Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Town make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since their 2-0 victory here in December last year. The Town winning comfortably thanks to goals from George Callard and Jack Odam. This afternoon’s match promises to be a an entertaining game with Romsey coming into the game two places and two points behind the Street, although the Street do have two games in hand on the Town. The Town didn’t get off to a good start this season as they lost their opening 3 league games, all away from home against Newport IOW (4-1), Bemerton Heath Harlequins (3-1) and Folland Sports (4-3). Their first win came courtesy of goals from Kieron Hancock, Jack Odam and Geoffrey Dunn to secure a 3-2 win. Progress in the Hampshire and Wessex League cups at the expense of Petersfield Town and Portland United came next, with further wins against Totton & Eling and a 4-2 away win at Laverstock & Ford.

To find out more about Romsey Town visit: www.romseytownfc.co.uk

Rapid cup exits followed against strong opposition in AFC Portchester, Portchester the Royal Navy FC and Baffins Milton Rovers. The Town then had a mix of up and down form, with a 3-1 1 defeat at Verwood Town. Liam Magee scoring the Town’’s consolation and then a 1-0 0 away win at Whitchurch United with again Magee scoring the crucial only goal. A 5-1 1 home defeat against Andover Town was reversed when Romsey played Ash United the following Saturday. A Charlie Rattley hat-trick hat and further goals from Magee and substitute Harry Prisk were the difference in a 5-1 5 win. The Town’ss recent results again continue to be mixed with a 3-1 midweek home victory over East Cowes followed wed with a 2-0 2 home defeat to Whitchurch United. Their last two matches have been more positive with a 3-0 3 home victory over Petersfield Town and a 2-1 2 victory against New Milton Town. The Town will be looking to continue this run this afternoon and force their way into the playplay offs and looking to extend their record over the Street from past meetings – they have won 6 of the 10 meetings here at Foxcotte Park, but the Street have won 3 out of the last 4 meetings here – including the 4-0 0 victory in the FA Cup, something you can n read much more on the following pages.

bluffers guide Romsey Town FC... THE CLUB The club was formed in 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall "to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town." Initially, they played at Alma Road and in 1889 began playing in local league football where they had successful spells in a number of competitions before joining the Southampton League as founder members in 1908. By the 1970s, the club started to re-surface out of the doldrums of lower league football and after three successive promotions and a Southampton Senior Cup triumph in 1974. Romsey regained their Hampshire League status in 1975 where they promptly won the Division 4 title at the first attempt. Romsey proceeded to end the decade on a high note, again winning promotion and the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1978 followed by arguably their finest hour a year later when they won Division 2 title and unexpectedly defeated Farnborough Town 1–0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup final played at The Dell. The 1980s saw Romsey consolidate in Division 1 before becoming founder members of the Wessex League in 1986. Here they soon became a strong force, and after some encouraging campaigns, they clinched the title in 1990 and enjoyed numerous good cup runs, most notably in 1990 when they lost 1–2 at home to Littlehampton Town in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. A change of personnel saw Romsey fall into decline, and after a nightmare season in 1993 they were relegated back to Division 1 of the Hampshire League, from where they were again relegated. But would return to the Wessex Premier League in 2007.

DEFINING

MOMENTS

WORD ON THE STREET SELECTS 4 KEY MOMENTS THAT HAVE SHAPED THE TOWN’S RECENT ERA

1986 WESSEX LEAGUE FOUNDER MEMBERS The Town are one of seventeen clubs to become founder members of the newly formed Wessex League. The Town find it a tough first season winning 7 and drawing 7 of their 32 games. Its clear that they struggled to put the ball in the back of the net with just 25 league goals scored – the fewest in the league as they finish 16th on 28 points, 2 behind Bournemouth but more importantly 9 ahead of bottom club Brockenhurst. The Town also go out of the Preliminary Qualifying Round of the FA Vase when they lose 3-1 away to Wotton Rovers.

18

1990 WESSEX LGE CHAMPIONS! Romsey are crowned champions of the Wessex League after a successful 1989/90 campaign. Winning 25 and drawing 6 of their 36 league matches, they obtain 81 points and finish ahead of Newport IOW, who finished 2 points adrift. The goalscoring problems of a few years ago were resolved with the Town scoring 84 league goals the most in the league that season and also only conceding 31 goals. This capped the steady progress made by the Town following the two previous campaigns had top 10 finishes. A run in the FA Cup also occurs with Westbury United defeated 5-1 and then Fareham Town took the tie to a replay after drawing 1-1 at the Bypass Ground. The replay ended in a 2-1 win for the Town. In the 2nd Qualifying Round they were narrowly defeated by Poole Town 2-1. The only downside to the season was the failure to gain promotion to the Southern League with runners-up Newport IOW given the promotion spot.

24

1991 FA CUP RUN! Their best run in the FA Cup occurred the following season when the Town reached the 4th Qualifying Round. This impressive run saw them beat Froome Town 1-0 at home before an entertaining 4-4 draw away at Chard Town in the 1st Qualifying Round. The replay at the Bypass Ground was a one-sided affair with the Town wining 3-0 that setup a home tie against Stroud in the next round. A narrow 1-0 victory would mean an away tie at Newport IOW came next and another 1-0 victory saw the Town progress. The fourth Qualifying Round would match Town at home to Littlehampton Town and a narrow 2-1 defeat would end their glorious run in the competition. The Town would also go on to finish fourth in the league on 69 points.

To find out more about Romsey Town visit: www.romseytownfc.co.uk

2007 PROMOTION TO WESSEX PREMIER Promotion back to the Wessex Premier was secured with a third place finish in League 1. The Town would finish 13 points behind Champions Hayling United and 5 behind runners-up Alresford Town. The Town won 22 matches out of the 36 played, most notable wins came away against Alresford Town (1-0), Hayling United with a 1-0 victory at home in March and high scoring wins at Blackfield & Langley (5-2) and at home to Liss Town (6-1) in April. Simon De’ath was the clubs top scorer with 25 goals in all competitions.

Seriously, just play with confidence. Z for Zoo. Are penguins better than pandas? Pandas are better – Penguins stink of fish!

V for voice. Can you cope with public speaking, or would you hate being a best man? I’d be alright to be fair; it’s part of my job as a salesman to talk to people. I can cope talking to a room of over 20 people. www.ansfc.co.uk

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street dropped 2 points when they conceded an 89th minute penalty with Millbrook. The Dockers took an early lead in the 6th minute, when Perry Harding found space in the box to convert past O’Brien. O The Street would equalise just before halfhalf time, when Ross Cook was played in after a1-2 a1 with Shane Lock and the Street striker showed why he is the clubs club top scorer this season with a fine finish.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

The Docker’ss would take the lead lea a minute into the second half, half through their own top scorer Mark Barker . The Millbrook striker found space on the right wing and hit an outstanding effort that crashed in off the post with O’Brien O beaten. Reece Rusher was introduced as a substitute just before half-time, time, due to an injury to Danny Urry. And Rusher was immediately causing the Docker’ss problems down the right wing wi and it was Rusher, who would find the equaliser when he scored from close range following good work down the left wing by Lock. The Street were in front for the first time in the match, when Ross Cook fed Shane Lock, who was able to turn his marker and although a his effort was parried out by the Millbrook keeper, Lock was first to react, react to the loose ball, to fire home.

SMITH 87

Lewis Alderman was introduced in the latter stages as Street looked to secure the points and nearly added to the score-line score but Cook’s effort was blocked With time running out a mix-up mix in the Street defence allowed Barker to get free and with Adam Pearson putting in a desperate challenge, a penalty was awarded and converted by Ben Baddams to secure a point for the Dockers and leave Street reet rueing their first half performance. performance

STREET 2-0 DOWNTON DAVIS 80, 88

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street got back to winning ways, but were made to wait until the final 10 minutes before two late Mikey Davis goals earned the three points.

MOMENTS

In a lacklustre first half, the Street finally had a couple of opportunities that both fell to Reece Rushet, but he was too high with both his efforts.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Downton showed their intent when they struck the post with an effort from outside the box.

The Robins thought they had opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half when Marcel Laptus put the ball past O’Brien but a covering defender was able to get back and clear the ball off the line. Max Allen and Josh Jeffery were introduced from the bench, with the Street looking to exploit Jeffery’s fresh legs upfront. However, it would Mikey Davis that would open the scoring, when he took advantage of some poor defending to score. The points were sealed 8 minutes later when Davis got his second when he coolly finished past the Downton keeper.

YESTERDAY’S PAGES

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to an historic Street verses Romsey clash at Foxcotte Park back in 2018 in the FA Cup Andover New Street 4-0 Romsey Town 11th August 2018 In their first season in the Wessex Premier the Street started off with a defeat away at Bashley in blistering temperatures and this was followed with a home defeat to Shaftesbury in a game that the Street felt they deserved at least a point. The FA Cup offered a welcome distraction from the poor league start and it was the first time that the club had entered the competition and John Smith’s men had to endure a tight and tense first half against a Romsey side high on confidence following their opening day win on the previous Saturday. The Street had already signalled their early intent to try and get behind the Romsey back four but the final ball was just lacking that bit of quality. Romsey were also playing some good football and created a couple of half chances that the Street defence dealt with. Then Zach Neve put the Street in front on 27 minutes with a fine finish past Jordan Westbrook in the Romsey goal. Romsey replied and should have perhaps been level on 35 minutes when a cross into the box from the right found Jack Odhambut the Romsey forward skewed his shot wide of the goal from 9 yards. They also tested George Baxter in the Street goal with a long range strike that zipped off the wet turf but Baxter got behind the shot to parry to safety. The Street doubled their lead after the interval on 57 minutes when Neve got his second when he twisted and turned the Romsey central defence before placing the ball past Westbrook into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Naturally, manager John Smith, in his column was looking forward to managing the club in it’s first FA Cup match and calling it a massive game for both sides. There was detailed look at the Romsey side and there was the first introduction of the away fan interview, with Romsey supporter Tony Galsworthy in the hot seat. With it being the FA Cup, there was a Stats & Facts article supplied by @FACupFactfile, that looked at all the stats from the previous season’s FA Cup competition. WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS No easy rides for Horndean in 'most competitive' Wessex League Premier Division for several seasons

Roach seals Royales Move

Horndean manager Michael Birmingham believes the Wessex League Premier Division is the most competitive it's been for a number of years this season. Horndean head into it having been held to a 0-0 draw by rivals AFC Portchester on Saturday despite Steve Ramsey being shown a straight red card for the visitors inside two minutes. As a result, Birmingham's men dropped down a place to third in the table with Baffins Milton Rovers leapfrogging them after a weekend win at Amesbury. And, with ninth-placed Alton visiting Five Heads Park next, the Horndean boss is expecting another tough run-out in what he deems as one of the most competitive Wessex Premier's for several seasons. Birmingham said: ‘Alton have been outstanding. They’ve got great honesty, they’ve got a very, very good manager who knows his stuff, the boys certainly play for him - they’re going to be a very difficult team to play against. ‘They’re not going to be easy, there are no easy games in this league, this league is probably the most competitive it’s been for a good six or seven years. ‘You had Sholing and Sholing were outstanding, apart from those couple of years, it’s been competitive. This now, I think it’s a really competitive league.’ Horndean had both Tommy Tierney and Alfie Lis forced off through injury in the weekend stalemate with Portchester and they will have to wait to see if either are available to face Alton. But Birmingham is hopeful of being able to call on some of the several first-teamers who missed the Royals meeting against Alton.

36

Folland Sports striker Clayd Roach has signed for Wessex Premier AFC Portchester. The Pacey Striker/Winger is current top scorer in the Wessex League 1 and will bring plenty of goals to the Portchester attack, scoring 16 in 9 starts this season! The Planemakers, who currently sit in second place in the league are surely to miss Roach’s goals as he nearly has scored half the sides total goals this season – 39. Roach’s last appearance for Folland Sports was back in mid September, when he was substituted during the 41 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins

ROUND-UP Fareham Town hoping for similar feeling at Cams Alders

Pete Stiles is refusing to look too far ahead as Fareham Town hope for a repeat of their last home performance when they welcome Shaftesbury on Saturday. Fareham produced a stunning victory to defeat Jersey Bulls on penalties to progress to the second round of the FA Vase last weekend. “Every game is a tough game in this division at the moment, we’ll just have to keep going. It’s not the end of the world a draw at the moment. It’s a long, long season with funny twists and turns to go yet.”

Moneyfields FC thank local football community for their support Moneyfields FC have thanked the local football community for their support and donations after one of their players was the victim of a serious assault. The Portsmouth-based club have been inundated with messages of goodwill since news broke that defender Stanlie Hopkins was hospitalised after an incident in the Red Lion pub car park in Cosham on Monday. An online Crowfunder set up by the club to raise £1,000 for the player – who remains in hospital in Southampton – has already seen that total passed in only a few hours. Portsmouth FC have also donated a signed shirt to be auctioned or raffled off, while former Blues players Christian Burgess and Ben Close have donated shirts and boots. Moneys first team boss Glenn Turnbull said: ‘We’ve been blown away by the support. ‘I’m not really surprised, it’s what the football community does. Everyone is friends off the park. That’s the good thing about being in a football club - people will come together as a group when you need them. We must have had over 100 messages of goodwill and people asking if there’s anything they can do. Ninety nine per cent of the time you’ll never need to ask, but it’s good to know the support is there if we do.”

ALSO... Ben Hatch has stepped down as 1st team manager of Christchurch.

The Crowdfunding page was set up earlier today and has already raised over £1,100.

He has been replaced by ex manager Graham Kemp, who has teken over on a temporary basis.

Moneyfields’ Wessex League rivals Baffins Milton Rovers have donated £100, while AFC Stoneham and Andover New Street have also donated. Portsmouth Sunday League club The Meon have also given £100.

The club have invited experienced applicants to contact their club secretary.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 FOOTBALL BOOTS.... 10 ADIDAS F50 (2004)

The first thing you'll notice about this boot is exactly what made it revolutionary: It has no laces. It actually does, but they are under the upper of the boot. Eventually everybody would find out that covering the laces isn't that good at all, but in 2004 for a boot to conceal its laces was absolutely revolutionary stuff. Its apparently primordial features wouldn't be groundbreaking at all, but the ones underneath the hood would eventually lead to perhaps the most ground-breaking boot today, which will be featured later on this list.

8 NIKE AIR ZOOM TOTAL 90 ii (2002)

Nike's first pure power boot, it featured a whole ad campaign that in itself was quite historic. The design and its name are meant to give a player comfort the whole 90 minutes without losing power or accuracy, and the off-centre lacing was completely revolutionary at that point in time. The inclusion of air in the sole, although short-lived, was also remarkable in its own right.

7

MIZUNO WAVE CUP

(197)

Getting a world-class player like Rivaldo to put on an unknown brand like Mizuno is a hard task, but once the Japanese brand did that the Wave won its place on this list. The most revolutionary aspect of this boot was the configuration of its studs. The "major" brands went on to copy them, while Mizuno continues to use a very similar arrangement to this day in the boots that Japanese allstar Keisuke Honda famously wears.

9

PUMA V1.06 (2006)

It might look a lot like a normal boot today, but the weight and look for 2006 was completely unusual and revolutionary. In fact, it was the lightest boot ever made when it debuted at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In a time where power boots were in vogue, the Puma V1.06 transformed the market and eventually made every other major brand shift to where they are today: creating lighter, faster boots.

6

NIKE MERCURIAL SL

(2008)

The grandchild of a boot you will see later on this list, this boot featured the addition of carbon fibre technology, and it was (for a little while) the lightest boot ever made. At first it was advertised as a conceptual boot, with its eventual evolution in the market to the flywire clad Superfly we've all grown accustomed to see on CR7's feet. It was the first boot to introduce a carbon fibre sole-plate, and it started the race to make the world's lightest boot that every brand in the world is still competing for.

38

5

ADIDAS COPA MUNDIAL (1979)

The best-selling boot of all time, the Copa Mundial is still being sold today on sporting stores worldwide. Made of kangaroo leather, the Copa Mundial was the lightest boots ever made and were made to exploit speed and versatility. In that regard it is considered the first "modern" boot, and would be years ahead of its competition and still competes favourably in the market today.

4

3

NIKE AIR MERCURIAL

(1998)

Specifically engineered for Ronaldo, the Air Mercurial were the world's best boots on the best player in the world's feet. These boots changed the boot industry forever towards a speed and lightweight market that wasn't important to anybody before their release and that is the dominant one today. They were also Nike's first incursion into the synthetic material for uppers. In other words, just as R9 revolutionized football, the Air Mercurial revolutionized football boots as we know them and are a big legacy of what we see today on the pitch.

ADIDAS F50 ADIZERO

(2010)

This version of the boot finally threw away all the bells and whistles the F50 line had for years and went for the most vital thing in football today: speed. With a lightweight upper and a ground-breaking sole-plate, players are flocking towards this boot because simply put: It's the most revolutionary boot in quite some time. The newest version, adiZero Prime, made this boot even better, and it seems to have a good hold on the speed boot market.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

2

PUMA KING (1970)

Like Pelé, they're definitely not called the King for nothing. They were O Rei's boot of choice as he won World Cups with Brazil, and as such they instantly have a place in history. Especially if they also fuelled the adidasPuma rivalry. This was also the boot that started boot sponsorship deals. But more than the history itself this boot was one that introduced the concepts of weight (they were lighter than ever before) and design to the football boot world, introducing colored boots (all white) for the first time.

@AndoverNSfc

39

1 ADIDAS PREDATOR (1994)

The boot that defines modern football is the Predator. It's as simple as that. It's also the top selling boot worldwide today. The idea behind this boot was to increase power and spin by adding fins to the boot, an idea featured in almost every single boot on the market today. It also featured the red details and the three white stripes that we see on every Predator from 1994 to this day and that features on almost every match you see. If all the other boots in this list have made strides to evolve football, the Predator has to be the highest point in evolution a football boot has achieved. For now, at least.

HOLLYWOOD NON-LEAGUE LEAGUE By Matt Badcock

You have to wonder what Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney really made of their first experience of Non-League football. In case you hadn’t heard, the actors who bought Wrexham turned up at Maidenhead United to see their first Red Dragons in the flesh last week. For people who roll in some pretty high-profile and glamorous circles, walking in to be greeted with some heckling must have been an eyeopening experience. I doubt that happens on the red carpet. The depth of the National League System on full show with more than 1,600 turning out on a dark night to watch 90 minutes of the Beautiful Game. Fantastic. I imagine they returned home with an even greater sense of how vital all these clubs are to their communities, not to mention how much it means to the supporters of the club they now own. Of course, as is the way with these things, their team lost 3-2 before conceding a late equaliser against Torquay United on Saturday to draw 1-1. The documentary covering their take-over will be titled Welcome to Wrexham. Last week was also a Welcome to Football. Where it rarely goes to plan. After Tuesday’s defeat, Deadpool star Reynolds – a seriously successful businessman to boot – described his feelings on an instagram post.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“Football is a staggering, heartbreaking, gorgeous, tommy-gun gun of soul-deadening, soul evil and beauty and I'm never sleeping again ever, ever.” Whether you are interested in their takeover or are indifferent, we can probably all relate, in some form, to that summary. Whoever you support, there must have been times when you think: Why do I do this? I know I have. There are millions of people p in this country who have no interest in this mad game. Who don’t spend their Saturdays – or midweek evenings – standing in the cold, or glued to websites and social media to see how their team and rivals have got on.And sometimes, after those last-minute nute goals, you do wonder if it would be easier to not bother. But that’s the thing with football. It hooks you in. It refuses to let go. Conceding stoppage-time stoppage goals is equalled out by those stoppage-time stoppage winners. Or at least the hope of one. And there’s something bizarrely magical about being out in the freezing cold watching a drab draw. Especially in NonNon League. Where you’re so close to the action and feel so much a part of it. I think we’ve seen that this season with some of the attendances across all levels – a combination of people just happy to be out at games again, mixed with an apathy of the higher reaches of the game. Because, yes, football can be a real pain at times. There are issues at all levels that really grate and things in Non-Leag League that could be better. But it also provides more drama and moments than any Hollywood script. Hopefully the Wrexham duo saw that for themselves.

league look In Division One Follands Sports went to the top of the table on Tuesday, lost the position to Newport on Wednesday, and then regained it by winning 3-1 at Petersfield whilst Newport were beaten by the fast climbing Andover Town. Fabio Manuel with two and Jake Newton claimed the Follands goals with Petersfield’s single reply coming from Ben Cooper. At the Portway Josh Bertie gave Andover a two goal lead that was cancelled out in the final fifteen minutes by Joe Craig and Connor Kelly only for substitute Freeman Nyakumbi to score the winner with his first goal for the Club. Bemerton Heath remain in the top three after two goals from Justin Bennett and one from new signing George Bishop gave them a 3-1 win over Fleet Spurs at Western Way – Shane Gibson with the Spurs goal. Andover New Street and Verwood both recorded away wins to keep themselves in contention with Shane Lock scoring the only goal of the game for Street at Ringwood while Verwood found things a little easier at Beatrice Avenue with a 5-1 victory over East Cowes Vics. – Sam Chilman, Ollie Davies, Jake Kelly, Alex Hancox and Harry Osman for the Potters- with Jimmi Burton the Vics marksman. Downton went down by the odd goal in three at home to Millbrook with Shaun Prentice’s goal not enough against strikes from James Lavender and Callum Drake that took the League new boys in to the top half of the table. Laverstock & Ford beat Whitchurch 3-2 at The Dell courtesy of goals from Archie Lovegrove, Russell Jones and Harrison Hale with the Jamboys reply coming from Nick Yeomans

and Grant Powell. Romsey maintained their current run of form with a best of three goal home win over New Milton – John Cole and Brad Strickland against one from Tyler Rudd as the visitors recent run of poor results continued. A bad week for Infinity ended with a 4-1 defeat at Fawley meaning they have now conceded more than fifty goals in the League so far. A welcome win for the Waterside club thanks to two goals from Jake Smith and singles from Dylan Knight and Jacob Sheath while Joel Francis was the lone Infinity scorer. A welcome win for Ash United as well with two goals from Zac Ashley-Simpson, very much the leading scorer for the Club, giving them victory over Totton and Eling and taking them out of the bottom three. Another week gone and Follands lead the way, no doubt there’s more twists and turns to come

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN My local non-league club, Hitchin Town, has averaged round trips of 120 miles per away game this season and on four occasions; the milometer has almost hit the 200 mark. This is a part-time club, run mostly by volunteers and their home attendances for league games average around 450. They are loyally supported, both at home and away matches. They are unfortunate in that they are in the Central Premier of the Southern League, Hitchin often feels like an outpost and therefore they travel quite a distance to some games. At times, you have to wonder if a 200mile round trip is worth it for a game played in front of less than 500 people, but that’s nonleague. Hitchin are just one of dozens of clubs in a similar position. Travelling to away games by coach is certainly better for the environment than any army of cars, including the very harmful, gasguzzling and climate unfriendly SUVs that proliferate British home counties towns. Coaches are even less damaging than trains, often thought to be the friendliest mode of transport. Local football should encourage less travelling to games. It is quite remarkable that even in a town like Hitchin, a lot of people still drive to the Top Field stadium. The myth that everyone walks to the ground is just that, the stream of parked vehicles in surrounding streets tells you that many opt for convenience. While any club can claim to be “green” in its processes and practices, while a big

54

percentage of the crowd drives to the match, the damage willll continue. Perhaps a day of walking to the ground would be a good initiative for a club, or maybe a non-driving non day? In order for travelling to be restricted, leagues may need to become more regionalised than they are at the moment. While football is an essential part of so many lives, there is ample scope for recalibration of an activity that should have a degree of flexibility. As Real Betis in Spain proclaim in their stadium, “No planet, no football”, so we should all be motivated to help. It is arguably argua time for the governance of clubs to include stronger rules around environmental issues that can be punished if breached. Pitches are another issue. The average football pitch needs approximately 20,000 litres of water per day. That’s a huge requirement, so recycling has to be a priority for clubs. Artificial pitches may be a commercial winner for some clubs, but there has to be some question marks about their environmental impact. Water conservation has to go hand-in-hand hand with energy efficiency technology such as solar panels. Many non-league league clubs are proud of their position in the local community, but a firm commitment to the environment can make them even more important and also local standard bearers for the green agenda. But this won’t be fully effective unless leagues and governing bodies grasp the task at hand and reshape the game beyond the Premier League and EFL. While le COP26 has stole all the headlines, nobody should be fooled into believing that small-time time football will be immune from the consequences of severe climate change.
