SWAN HILL SIGNS LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP WITH ANDRA ANDRA and the Swan Hill Drag Racing Club (SHDRC) are pleased to announce the signing of an exclusive longterm partnership for sanctioning services for events held at Swan Hill Dragway. “We are very pleased to be able to announce that ANDRA and the Swan Hill Drag Racing Club are teaming up,” SHDRC President, Gary Rovere, said. “We are excited about the future and what it may hold for the track in the way of both-eighth mile events and quarter-mile events, and to possibly playing a part in multi-track series’ in the future – it is going to be great!” The build of Swan Hill Dragway commenced in 2015 before an initial opening in November of 2016 identified track surface issues with the concrete surface having ‘moved.’ Further works were completed, and the track was reopened temporarily in the early 2018, however it quickly became apparent that more work was required to create an optimum racing surface.

“The Swan Hill Drag Racing Club has been on quite a journey and everyone at ANDRA is excited about this new long-term agreement between us and to be working together to get Swan Hill Dragway operational and hosting some great events in the near future,” ANDRA Chief Executive Officer, Brett Stevens, said. “We are already working hand in hand with the Swan Hill Drag Racing Club on identifying and addressing the issues, consulting with the government partners involved, and assisting the Club in applying for funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria as we have for other ANDRA clubs in the past.” “We look forward to being a part of the Swan Hill Drag Racing Club fulfilling their vision of 17 years ago by building the premier quarter-mile track in regional Victoria.” For the full story, please click here. LIKE FATHER LIKE SON Mario Polito is stepping up to Pro Stock and the son of one of the most respected names in the category, Joe Polito, is set to turn heads. Polito’s Pro Stock weapon of choice is a Chevrolet Cobalt built by Jerry Bickel Race Cars USA and powered by a 398 Small Block Chevrolet engine with a max rpm of 10,600. It features a five-speed Liberty transmission and its best ET to date is 7.18 seconds in Pro Stock trim (7.001 with a sportsman set-up). Not only does he have an impressive machine under him, but he has the sage advice of his dad – who won back-to-back national ANDRA Pro Stock titles in 1996 and 1997 – in his corner, with Joe heading up the development program for the team. Unsurprisingly, Polito has loved the sport of drag racing since a young age. “I have been involved in the sport since the age of six and the first event I attended was the last race at Castlereagh in 1984 and all I can remember from that event was watching a funny car wheel stander

send sparks all down the track. It was definitely a lasting memory I’ll always remember!” he said. “I’m sure it was the first race meeting that dad raced his Pro Stock Cortina that he built just in time for the last ever race meeting in Sydney. I had to wait four more years before I was able to travel with dad up to Willowbank in his D-Series truck – it was only a three-seater so the only way I could go was if I sat in the middle of the gear stick between the two bench seats for 12 hours, but I wanted to go racing so bad that it didn’t matter to me.” “Spending those few days at the race track away from school was something not every 10-year-old got to experience; and from that moment I used every opportunity I could to go racing to help my dad and spend time in the garage watching and learning.”

“Now that I look back, I was in the way most of the time and only got to do the ‘boring’ jobs like cleaning the car, sweeping and packing the truck. But thirty years later and now having my own kids and owning my own Pro Stock team, it all makes sense,” he grinned. At the age of 20, Polito would make his move from strictly being a crew member to turning his hand to driving. “My first run down the quartermile was in my street registered XY falcon that ran 13.6. Then three years later in 2007 I competed in my first event, the Summer Nationals at Sydney Dragway in Super Sedan,” the 43-year-old General Manager reflects. “How I came to have the XY is a bit of a funny story. I was 19 when I got it, and dad was not so keen on me buying it. So long story short, I purchased it and stored it at my best

11

mate Joe’s house for six months while I was getting it fixed so I could get it registered. Once it was ready, I drove it to dad’s workshop so I could get a blue slip for it, but then it took me a few weeks to build up the confidence to bring it home!” “We went on to race that car on and off for three or four years, with a best ET of 9.56 at 141mph and finishing in the NSW track championships in the top five during those years.” “Thinking back to those days running that car while it was street registered brings back some really fond memories that I wish I could re-live. Going out on the track was enjoyable and most often you are out with your mates having a heap of fun while racing in a controlled and safe environment. Racing off the streets was definitely the way to go, and I encourage this to everyone as it is not putting others or yourself at risk.”

“In 2018 I upgraded to the current Cobalt and ran it in Top Sportsman for two seasons, finishing in the top five and top six of the seasons with a best ET of 7.13 at 193mph – we also had a top three qualifying car at each event and made the quarterfinals on most occasions.” While having a great time in Top Sportsman, by this time the call of Pro Stock was undeniable. “Going fast is really what Pro Stock is all about and it was always where I wanted to end up,” Polito said. “On the day the field is only spread by a tenth of a second – it really is one of the hardest professional classes in all of drag racing in my opinion and the competition is so fierce, and that’s why I love it so much.” “In 2021 we entered into our first Pro Stock event for the last two events of the season, finishing just outside the top ten in the points.

fastlane

“Since then, we have not been able to test as much as we wanted nor have we been able to spend as much time on the engine dyno as we would have liked due to COVID-19, work commitments and also waiting on some parts to come from the USA, but my main goal for 2022 is to race at all of the events that we can, to qualify at those events and hope that we can represent our marketing partners well and have some fun along the way!” “We are only a new team with a handful of passes under our belt, so we are proud of the gains we have been making each time we race. The teams we are racing against have been competing in Pro Stock for years with a lot more experience than us so we are definitely the rookies, and we just hope we can do our best in taking on the best in Australia and do our sponsors proud.” Continued over page...

12

Continued from previous page... So how does Polito feel to be finally racing in the Pro Stock class? “To be honest, I am still kicking myself, asking, has this really happened?! After all these years I have been able to fulfil a childhood dream of racing Pro Stock. I truly am very fortunate to have the support from my wife and children to allow me to do this,” he said. “Taking the leap into Pro Stock was a three-year plan that was thought out, as you would if you were starting a new company. You really need to assess all areas of what it is you’re trying to achieve and if you treat it any different you most likely will lose a lot of money and be disappointed that you failed and let your team down.” “So, before I decided I was going to step up into Pro Stock, I approached dad and asked for his help with my engine program and if he was willing to help me get some stuff together. I then got cracking to assemble a team and sponsorship.

“The lead into our first race was not how I expected it to be as we worked around the clock just to get the engine running without much time to spend on the dyno. I didn’t get to enjoy the experience of what it really meant to finally race in Pro Stock. I was never concerned about my driving; it was more about hitting the ground running and doing well for the team and our sponsors. I’m sure it was a proud moment for dad to see to me race Pro Stock at our home track, as it was for me.” “At our next event I really felt for the first time what it means to finally race Pro Stock and race at the track at which my dad was crowned with his first championship plus all those great memories we had growing up there. I have really enjoyed the challenge so far.” While his dad is in his corner, Polito is the one calling the shots. “I will always be known as Joe Polito’s son, so automatically I should have high achievements, right?” he grinned.

13 fastlane

“The truth is though, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. I’m out here for me at the end of the day, I run my own team and have only myself to blame if I don’t hit the set up on the day, but if we taste some success along the way that would be nice for my family and me.” “Over the years I have raced independently at the track and really think it has been his way of teaching me the right from wrong and letting me make my own decisions at the track.” “I really think this has helped me over the years and has made me a better racer and it’s so much more satisfying that I’m able to race independently if I need to, although it would a lot easier if he was on my team full time! Dad always jokes that I couldn’t afford him!” “Dad and I have spent the past 18 or so months working around the clock to make this happen and now that we are here, I’m glad we can race in group one. It was never going to be easy for me and my team, but I have high expectations to perform and hopefully I will make a name for myself.”

“I really appreciate having dad’s support. Having him in charge of the engine development has also helped some things to be a little smother for me, and we have been able to run respectably just in a very short time by having all this experience at my disposal. He has won (and lost) races and championships, he tunes, and he knows these cars inside out, so we are up for the challenge!“ “I also want to make mention of some other important people I need to recognise for their support in making this all happen. I would like to thank my wife and my three children, my crew – John, Rick, Jim, Andrew, Christian, Marco, Gianluca and part-timers Bob and Damien; and of course, my major sponsors: JD Concrete and Penetron Australia, Motorsports Parts and Services, Joe Polito, Competition Solutions, Advanced Readymix, UCBC, Wesco IND, CC Royal and VP Australia.” To learn more about the Mario Polito Motorsports team, go to www.facebook.com/mariopolitomotorsports Photos thanks to Cackling Pipes Photography (on-track) and the library of Mario Polito

TECH

TORQUE Most NHRA Stock classes and other stock suspension/small tyre drag cars have monoleaf or split monoleaf rear springs and some sort of traction device. Most traction devices can be adjusted to some extent, but what if you could adjust the leaf springs as well? That’s the idea behind split monoleaf springs. Calvert Racing, inventor of the CalTracs traction bar system, also came up with the two-piece split monoleaf spring for drag racing. The springs are designed to control and reduce excessive body separation so the rear tyres plant firmly to the track without unloading. They’re also considerably lighter than factory leaf springs; some racers claim anywhere from 40 to 45 pounds in overall weight reduction when making the switch from multileaf to split monoleaf springs. That reduces unsprung weight, allowing for more shock absorber control and quicker elapsed times in many cases. Calvert’s split monoleaf springs are designed with a parabolic rear half. An evolution of a conventional taper leaf spring, the parabolic configuration distributes stresses more evenly across the spring for a more comfortable ride. With the Calvert spring, the rear segment leaf is thicker at one end and tapers from the middle to the end. Its job is to hold up the rear end of the car and set ride height. The forward segment of the spring controls the launch of the car. That’s where the traction tuning is based, allowing you to use different spring rates forward of the rear axle as well as behind it.

For example, you can set the front half of the spring ‘soft’ so it will work better with a traction device. And if you’re not happy with the ride height of the car, you can purchase a new rear spring segment to adjust it. Calvert Racing split mono leaf springs are manufactured with heavy duty U-shaped alignment clamps held together with Grade 8 hardware. The front spring eye bushing is solid aluminium, and the rear spring eye bushing is urethane. Summit Racing offers Calvert Racing springs for a wide range of cars in stock, lower, and raised ride heights. Spring rate ranges from 200 to 225 pounds. One question that comes up is street use. A number of Calvert Racing customers with leaf spring vehicles still use them as double-duty machines. If those cars were converted to something like a ladder bar or a four-link, the suspension hardware required to get the job done (panhard bar, anti-roll bar, watts links components, housing floaters, etc.) limit their usefulness on the street. The complete spring-andCalTracs bar setup doesn’t have those issues aside from some extra noise. You can get a detailed look at Calvert’s split monoleaf leaf springs in the accompanying photos.

1

Compare the stock Chevy monoleaf spring with the Calvert Racing split monoleaf above it. The Calvert spring is basically a two-piece monoleaf joined in the middle with two U-shaped clamps.

2

5

This side view gives you a better look at how the spring segments are joined together. Note there are no rubber isolators – these springs are for racing, not comfy passenger cars!

3

The clamps are riveted to their respective spring segments. To change a front or rear segment, loosen the clamp and remove the nut on the centering pin.

The rear spring segment has a polyurethane spring eye bushing, shown here installed in a Chevy Nova spring shackle. The front segment has a solid billet aluminium bushing.

4

6

You can see that the rear leaf segment is tapered front to back and goes from thick to thin. Swapping this segment for another one allows you to change the ride height of the car.

In this photo, you can see the front Cal Trac traction bar mounting bracket installed on the spring, and the spring bolted to the Nova’s front spring hanger. You must install them this way, so they fit properly on the car.

ROCKYNATS READY TO RUMBLE THIS EASTER Rare Spares Rockynats 02 will see Rockhampton fire up for Easter 2022 with tickets selling fast for Queensland’s biggest automotive festival.

Last year, the inaugural Rockynats was declared a raging success by all involved – including the Queensland Tourism Awards which awarded the event Silver in the ‘Festival and Events’ award category. In 2022, more than 1,500 cars and bikes will compete and participate in an array of activities across April 15 to 17, including cruising, Australia’s biggest street parade, burnouts, eighth-mile street drags, a show ‘n’ shine, dyno competition and drifting, a Thunder Run and more. In addition to the exciting activations for the entrants, Rockhampton will come to life with an amazing festival experience for spectators including trade shows, exhibitions and food vendors as well as rides and attractions the whole family can enjoy. With prizes for vehicles in the show and shine, burnout competitions (including coveted Burnout Masters qualifying positions), street racing and much more, Rockynats winners stand to share in more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.

When it comes to the street drags, the demand has been such that entries for this segment of the event are already sold out. The Garrett Advancing Motion Street Drags precinct will bring no-prep, street outlaws style action to the heart of Rockhampton as some of Australia’s fastest street-driven drag cars and bikes battle it out for prize money and event glory. Garrett Advancing Motion is sponsoring all of the drag racing awards that will be contested at the event, including: • Pro Category 1st place: $1000 in prize money • Pro Category 2nd place: $500 in prize money • Street Category 1st place: $500 in prize money • Street Category 2nd place: $200 in prize money All competitors will take to the ‘track’ on Easter Saturday (April 16) for qualifying, with the top 300 to continue on to race on Easter Sunday (April 17). Last year’s Pro Category winner, Shane Page, is ready to see if he can take back-to-back victories with his LS Turbo powered VL Calais this Easter.

“It was a really good event last year, they put on a pretty good show, and it was certainly something different for me – I had never been to something like that before and it was a real eye opener,” said 46-year-old from Caloundra in Queensland. “Obviously for me the eighth mile drags were a real stand out and what I enjoyed the most, but I also don’t mind watching the burnouts and the street cruise is great too and I wouldn’t mind taking part in that again.” “Overall, it is a great event, and I can’t wait to get back into it and see how it all goes this year.” “I am absolutely looking to defend my title – I have gone in and made a few modifications and spent some more money as we look to hopefully have it come through again this year – there are a lot of people wanting to chase my tail apparently!” he laughed. The Rockynats is managed by the same team which is behind the time-honoured Summernats in Canberra and the hugely popular RedCentreNATS in Alice Springs. “With the phenomenal effort, enthusiasm and excitement from volunteers, officials, entrants and

spectators, the team at Rare Spares Rockynats cannot wait to show what 2022 has in store for Queensland’s biggest automotive festival,” Summernats Director, Andy Lopez, said. “After such a great event in 2021, we were not surprised at all to see entries for the street drags sell out so quickly and spectator tickets have also been a hot item!” “The Street Drags were an exceptionally exciting part of the inaugural festival, and we cannot wait to see what all of our entrants have in store for us for RockyNats 02 – it is going to be huge!” Rare Spares Rockynats is proudly brought to you by Rockhampton Regional Council and presented by Advance Rockhampton in association with Summernats. The event is supported by Rare Spares, Tourism and Events Queensland, Buddy’s Fire, McDonalds Central Queensland, Insane Performance and Johnson’s 4WD Repair Shop. PERFECT

LIGHT JOE BRESCIANO At December’s South Coast Nationals at South Coast Raceway, Super Sedan racer Joe Bresciano set a Perfect Light on his way to a semi-final appearance against the eventual event runner-up for the bracket. “I think it is fair to say every racer strives to try and achieve a Perfect Light,” said Bresciano, who started out racing in 1995 at Calder Park Raceway in a HJ Statesman and has been racing in Super Sedan since 2011. “Super sedan is a very, very competitive bracket with strong fields. As they say, ‘you snooze, you lose’ or in DYO, ‘a drag race is won at the start line.” “I clearly recall that perfect light run because I did my routine as usual – burnout, back up, check of the gauges, then approach the pre-stage beam. My opponent gets his on and at this point I go into full stage and hold my transbrake button down and said some choice words to myself! I can laugh about it now though,” he chuckled.

“My opponent is into full stage now and the rest is history. I beat him by half a car length with a little pedal – I didn’t want to risk breaking out. When we both got out of our cars, we shook hands and he said to me ‘I know I cut a fine light, but you must’ve done one better!’ I laughed and said, ‘mate I honestly thought I was going to see a cherry only because I know I staged deeper than usual.’ He replied, ‘well it must’ve been a good light’ to which I said “look, I can honestly say it’ll be a .00 with whatever digit is on the end!” “When the tow cars arrived, he yelled out to me that I had got him on a perfect light, and I couldn’t quite believe it. On the return to the pits, it was all over the PA and we received a lot of congratulations, which was just great.”

The December event came after some time away for the Wallan (Victoria) racer. “The South Coast Nationals was my first time out competing for a while, so grabbing 60 points and the Perfect Light Award was certainly not a bad start to the season for us,” Bresciano said. “We are planning on continuing the season and hopefully we can secure the same if not better results at the upcoming events. “This isn’t my first .000 light ever, but it is my first Perfect Light Award, and it is certainly a very satisfying achievement. Amidst some other reaction time awards, two Jamboree wins and some other DYO wins in this car, I suppose this

award highlights that the 68 Camaro means business!” South Coast Raceway is a personal favourite for Bresciano, who is a wall and floor tiling contractor whose business, Custom Tiling Contractors, specialises in domestic, commercial and pool tiling. “In my opinion, Portland’s track would probably be one of, if not the most well-presented track we have at the moment, and I can say over the years it hasn’t let its guard down in any way,” Bresciano said. “We are always excited heading across to Portland. South Coast Raceway always put on a great show and the team are very welcoming and hospitable. Scott Cleary has that place running like clockwork,

so I send many thanks to Scott and his team. We all love heading down to Portland.” Bresciano has many people that he would like to thank for their support of his racing. “There is such a long list of people I want to recognise. Firstly, there is my family and friends, including my wife Patricia and kids Adriano and Gracie-Marie and my dad Ross,” Bresciano said.” “Thanks also to Stef Radovanovic; Nuch and Lee at TCE convertors; Paul Rogers Sr and Jr for a bulletproof power glide transmission; John Marshall from Custom Cams; Peter from ULX110 oils; Bruno Cugnetto at VPW; Theo at High Energy; Salv at Cafe Notturno; and Corky in the USA.”

“Many thanks also to my brothers Mark and Robert, Rob Ambruosi, Rob Mason, Daniel Rossetti, Adam Laureano, Ron Laureano, Ago Scarpino, Bruno Romeo, Tony Romeo, Joe Capitanio, James Angiolino, Frank Lamacchia, Mick Callerame, Piero Piu, Angelo Ferola, Paul Turner, Danny Bresciani, John Lang, Frank Biondo, Mark Shearer and Rod Alcorn; and to anyone else that’s helped over the years.” “There is also a whole bunch more, but there is just too many to list here – you know who you are and so a big thank you too!” For full results from the South Coast Nationals, please click here. CHRIS MATHESON TOP FUEL MOTORCYCLE

NAME: CHRIS MATHESON

At the first ever event of the new Burson Auto Parts Top Fuel Championship, you took out the victory in Top Fuel Motorcycle – how was that event for you?

AGE: 60

It was a good event, and it was great to see the crowd rolling in on the Saturday. On the bike we were struggling with balance, and in the final against Rob Cassar I had to do a big pedal and shut the throttle down and then get back on it as I was out of alignment which wasn’t great, but we were able to make it work to get the win and get some points – points are so critical for the Championship.

BASED IN: BRISBANE, QLD OCCUPATION: DEVELOPER STARTED RACING: GROUP 1 AROUND 2010 CLASSES COMPETED: GROUP 1 BEST ET AND SPEED: 6.007 ET, 241.8MPH/389KMH FAVOURITE RACETRACK: THE MOTORPLEX, HIDDEN VALLEY DRAG STRIP, WILLOWBANK RACEWAY, SYDNEY DRAGWAY – THEY ARE ALL MY FAVOURITES FOR MANY DIFFERENT REASONS. FAVOURITE MOVIE: THE GRINCH FAVOURITE FOOD: A GOOD STIR FRY SPONSORS: WEB CAM RACING CAMS, ROCKET INDUSTRIES, PERFORMANCE WHOLESALE AUSTRALIA, LARRY ‘SPIDERMAN’ MCBRIDE, KITTEN CAR CARE PRODUCTS, CRC, BONINFANTE FRICTION INC, AEROFLOW PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS, CYCLEDRAG.COM, NEW-GEN BUSINESS PARK AND CLM GROUP CONSULTING.

Since that event we have been working on refining the balance on the bike, so hopefully those changes will rectify the issues we were having. It has been well publicised that you are pushing to be the first Top Fuel Motorcycle rider in Australia to lay down a five second pass – how is that pursuit going? Last year we set a 6.007 pass which came in the last run of that particular event as I like to wait for the last pass to really push it as far as I can as if I go into the sand on a final run, I don’t need to turn it around for the next pass. It is a real challenge stopping these bikes, we have the best of everything, the absolute best you can when it comes to braking, but these bikes are just so powerful. How do you balance the chase for records with wanting to win titles? We are always chasing that number – we have won seven championships in total out of 10 attempts plus a few second places, and we have held national records for over 10 years starting way back at our first ever event in Top Fuel Motorcycle. We have continued to improve, and we would really like to go quicker and get into the fives, but at the same time I am very conscious of winning championships – especially the Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship given it is the inaugural one. Winning the first event for the new series is a bit of history in itself, but we would like to take it further. We focus on the wins first, but in the process, we try to run some good numbers and see what happens. Is there anyone who you would like to shine the spotlight on for their involvement in your racing? I would like to send a special thanks to my sponsors and supporters, however number one is my team – they make it all possible.

You are new to the driver’s seat – how are you finding your experience so far? It is really cool. It is great to meet new people. Going pretty fast is pretty cool and of course if you win you get to bring home the Christmas tree, which is just fantastic. You took the win at the season opener for the Burson Auto Parts Top Fuel Championship – how did that feel? What did it mean for you to take that victory? It felt really good – and it means I beat my dad (Top Fuel’s Phil Lamattina) again! He has never won at Sydney Dragway before, and I have. It sure feels good to beat him and have the bragging rights! You competed in your first Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series event in December at the South Coast Nationals – how did you find that event and are you planning more SRESS events in the future?

STARTED RACING: 2020

I really enjoyed my first Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series event, and I definitely am planning on racing at more of those events – I hope to win the championship one day.

What future goals do you hold for yourself in your racing, and also away from the track? I want to win a championship in Junior Dragster, and looking ahead to my future racing, I have my eye on Top Fuel of course! Off the track, I want to be a successful carrot farmer, I am already working on the farm fulltime. What is it that you love about Junior Dragster racing? I love going fast. I have been really keen to go racing for ages, so I was very happy when dad said I could and the Berias family gave me the chance to race as well. Who do you want to thank? I would like to thank my family, the Berias family and our sponsors for all of their support.

SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT

SPORTSMAN SERIES

TALENT SHOWCASED The South Coast Nationals at Portland’s South Coast Raceway hosted an impressive showcase of competitive performances from the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series racers across December 11 and 12. When all was said and done, it was Colin Griffin (Super Gas), Sarah Osborne (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster), David Bunnik (Super Street), Sean Ricketts (Modified Bike), Chevy Taylor (Super Sedan), Kenny Stewart (Modified), Sam Cardinale (Top Sportsman), Shane Baxter (Supercharged Outlaws) and Steve Norman (Super Comp) who took out the winning ANDRA Christmas Tree trophies. Taking out the runner-up spots were Graeme Spencer (Super Gas), Todd Wagner (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster), Tex Griffiths (Super Street), Lucas Neagoe (Modified Bike), Rhyan

Sturazaker (Super Sedan), Craig Baker (Modified), Vlado Turic (Top Sportsman), Tim Stewart (Supercharged Outlaws) and Craig Geddes (Super Comp). Following Sunday’s action, you could not wipe the smile off Chevy Taylor’s face after he took the victory in Super Sedan. Taylor faced off against Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier, Rhyan Sturazaker, in the final following earlier victories against Des Jeffree, Benny Phillips and Jamey Maslennikoff ahead of a bye run in the semi-final. Sturazaker meanwhile had taken on and defeated Mathew Gay in the first

round ahead of a second-round solo pass, before wins against Chris Farrugia and Joe Bresciano.

In the Top Sportsman ranks, reigning Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series Champion for the bracket – Sam Cardinale – first took out the Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Medallion for the bracket before overcoming plenty of obstacles to take a win over a red-lighting Vlado Turic in the final after a round one win over Dave Foster and a second-round bye, while Turic emerged victorious from battles against Arty Roumbos and Rick Smith. In the Modified ranks a Chicago Shootout format was employed, with Kenny Stewart ultimately taking the victory over runner-up Craig Baker. Stewart was also the Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier for the class. In Super Gas, the reigning Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series Champion for the class emerged victorious from a finale

battle against Graeme Spencer, who had earlier claimed the Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Medallion. Earlier in the day, Griffin faced off against Warren Bull (round one) and Jason Wilson, while Spencer took on Michael Milasiewicz ahead of a bye run. In Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster, Sarah Osborne continued her strong form that saw her claim the Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Medallion to take out the victory over runner-up Todd Wagner. On her way to the final, Osborne enjoyed an opening round bye ahead of successful races against Lachlan Walker and Ross Lamattina. Wagner meanwhile had faced off against Dylan Knezevic and Shantaya Kardum ahead of a semi-final bye on his way to the final. In Super Street, David Bunnik defeated Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Tex Griffiths in the final, after taking earlier victories over Michael

Petrov (round one), Kevin Dark, Dutchy Holland and Henry Spiack. Griffiths booked his spot in the final with victories over Garry Hutchins (round two) and Rodney Kerr (round three) book-ended by bye runs in round one and the semi-final. Sean Ricketts took out the victory in Modified Bike over Lucas Neagoe after taking earlier victories from Dean Jamieson and Andrew Sellears, while Neagoe earned his spot in the final with a round one win over Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Nat McKay (round one) and a bye in round two. Shane Baxter held the ANDRA Christmas Tree aloft in Supercharged Outlaws with a win from Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Tim Stewart, which followed an earlier round one match-up against Bob Sherry ahead of a bye run in the second-round while Stewart had a round one bye ahead of a win over Doina Day in the second round.

In Super Comp, Steve Norman clean swept the weekend – not only claiming the overall victory and the Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier Medallion for the class, but also setting new ET (5.480) and MPH (124.72) national records for the C/ SMA class. The Super Comp class was run using a Chicago Shootout format, with Norman facing off against runner-up and defending Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series Champion, Craig Geddes, in the final. Competition Bike was run as an exhibition only bracket, with Joe Khoury taking the win over Rob Cassar. S T A N R E WEST

THE WILD, WILD WEST

The 51st annual MacTrack Westernationals hosted more than 180 racers over two days in early March, with the Australian Drag Racing Championship (ADRC) and Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series (SRESS) racers putting on a host of stellar performances in the pursuit of coveted ANDRA Gold Christmas Trees. When all was said and done, it was Daniel Gregorini (Top Doorslammer), Jay Upton (Top Fuel Motorcycle), Beau Ferguson (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster), Richard Stevens (Super Street), Paul Nieuwhof (Modified Bike), Nick Panagopoulos (Super Sedan), Darryl Treasure (Modified), Alby Bakranich (Top Sportsman), Alan Mahnkoph (Supercharged Outlaws), Ross Smith (Competition Bike), Steve Norman (Super Stock) and Sam Treasure (Competition) who took out the prestigious trophies. Taking out the runner-up spots were John Zappia (Top Doorslammer), Greg Durack (Top Fuel Motorcycle), Lucas Green (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster), Glenn Sterkenburg (Super Street), Luke Seaton (Modified Bike), Roger Moorhouse (Super Sedan), Nick Gardiner (Modified), Colin Davis (Top Sportsman), Peter Appleby

(Supercharged Outlaws), Phill Paton (Competition Bike), Jake Chaisty (Super Stock) and Nigel Johnson (Competition). In the Top Doorslammer final, it was almost too close to call with Gregorini ultimately triumphing over Zappia with a 5.730 second pass to Zappia’s 5.728. Earlier in the evening, Gregorini had faced off against Vinyl Wraps and Graphics Best Presented Award getter Frank Taylor (round one) and Stuart Moresby (semi), while Zappia had emerged successful from a round one Goldenstates rematch against Pino Priolo, and a semi-final against Steve Aldridge. By virtue of his oh-so-close victory over the legendary Zappia, Gregorini – who had also earlier claimed the Crow Cams Top Qualifier Award presented by Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks – takes not only the victory, but also a commanding lead in the ADRC Top Doorslammer championship.

In Top Fuel Motorcycle, Jay Upton – who also claimed the Crow Cams Top Qualifier Award presented by Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks for the class – did enough to clinch the victory despite a number of obstacles throughout the weekend. He faced off against Greg Durack in the final after enjoying a bye run in the first round and having a solo in the semi when Ricky Wood was unable to front. Durack meanwhile raced Wayne McGuinness in the opening round ahead of a bye in the semi. In Super Street, Richard Stevens had a solo pass in the final after taking earlier victories over Josh North (round one), reigning national champion Paul Garbellini, Norm Campbell and Beau Higgins. Sterkenburg meanwhile had taken on Lisa Garbellini, Andy Oorschot, Kirstie Wroe and Chris de Bruin, but was unable to front for the final after suffering engine damage. Decoglaze Glass Splashbacks Top Qualifier John Szabo was defeated in the second round by Cameron Lockett, who faced Beau Higgins in round three. In Modified Bike, Paul Nieuwhof snagged a lucky break when his opponent Luke Seaton broke-out after Nieuwhof had all but conceded the race with a breakage off the start line. Not realising Nieuwhof had struck trouble, Seaton pushed his bike all the way to the end of the track, breaking out in the

29 fastlane

process. Nieuwhof – who was also the Top Qualifier for the bracket – went to the final against Seaton after emerging victorious from battles against Wayne Gummow (round one) and Michael Macri before a round three bye, before defeating Brian Hotker in the semifinal. Seaton booked his place in the final with wins over Chris Morgan, Wayne Patterson and Ian Read before a bye in the semi-final. In the Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster class, it was another case of unfortunate events, with Beau Ferguson encountering issues on the startline only for Lucas Green to break-out and hand the victory to Ferguson, who had claimed the Top Qualifier honours earlier in the day. On the way to the final, Ferguson had enjoyed a bye run in the opening round ahead of wins over Brock Moresby and Tahlia Martin before another bye in the semi-final. Green meanwhile had taken on and defeated Jett Martin and Brock Ferguson before a round three bye and a win over Dylan Spadaro in the semis. In Super Sedan, it was a dead heat in the final between Nick Panagopoulos and Roger Moorhouse, with Nick ultimately taking out his maiden Gold ANDRA Christmas Tree when Roger brokeout. Panagopoulos took out the ANDRA Christmas Tree after earlier round wins over Craig Carter (round one) and Steve

Hunt before a round three bye and victory over Top Qualifier Luke Guppy in the semifinal. Moorhouse meanwhile had taken on Tyron Begg, Eli Tunstall and Daniel Kojic before enjoying a bye in his semi-final. In Top Sportsman, Alby Bakranich took out the victory over Top Qualifier Colin Davis. Bakranich had earlier taken wins over Paul Downe (round one) and Kevin McIvor while Davis enjoyed a bye run in the opener ahead of a win over Phil Rowles. The Supercharged Outlaws victory went to Alan Mahnkoph, who took the ANDRA Gold Christmas Tree over runner-up Peter Appleby following earlier triumphs over Jon Ferguson and Shane Catalano – whose Mopar Muscle Valiant was awarded the Crow Cams Best Engineered Award. Appleby had booked his place in the final with wins from Jessica Mullins and Top Qualifier Vince Belladonna. The Competition Bike final came down to Top Qualifier Phill Paton and Ross Smith, with a red light from Paton handing the victory to Smith. The bracket is run as a three-round format, with Paton and Smith securing three victories each to claim their places in the final. Steve Norman took the Super Stock victory over Jake Chaisty, with the South Aussie racer taking the win following earlier wins over Graeme Simms (round one) and Daniel Johnston, while Chaisty

had triumphed over Top Qualifier Errol Quartermaine before taking a bye run in the semi-final. In the Competition Eliminator ranks, it was Sam Treasure who took a popular victory after a highly successful weekend. Treasure defeated Nigel Johnson in the final after earlier victories over Jayde Robinson (round one), Madison Brown and Connor McClure (who had beaten Top Qualifier Jeff Lewis in round two) while Nigel had defeated Michael Buckley, Paul Carey and Steve Martin on his way to the final. There were plenty of smiles in the Treasure camp, with Darryl Treasure racing to the Modified victory over Nick Gardiner following earlier wins over Rachel Gannaway, Joel Mearns and Nicholas Wroe – who had taken out Top Qualifier Paul Ryan in the first round. Nick had secured his place in the final by successfully facing off against Andrew Frost and Kasey McClure before a bye in the semi-final. ANDRA thanks the Perth Motorplex and all of its volunteers and sponsors for an outstanding racetrack and a well-run event.
