Verso una Chicago senza petrolio Towards a no-oil Chicago di Andrea Cogo e Enricomaria Todaro

« La città dei nostri giorni sta diventando sempre più disumana rispetto alla città del passato . Possiamo capire questo se la guardiamo sotto diversi aspetti. Il fatto stesso che nonostante in passato l’uomo potesse camminare da un capo all’altro della sua città, egli non può farlo oggi, e ciò mostra le dimensioni inumane della città . Certo egli può utilizzare un’automobile per raggiungere la sua destinazione, ma deve essere in grado di pagare per farlo e, se non può guidare , pagare qualcuno affinchè lo trasporti; ed i rischi della strada sono molti.

L’aria che respiriamo non è adatta per l’uomo, né lo è l’acqua che beviamo.

Dobbiamo purificare entrambe, ma anche così il pericolo non sarà eliminato, poiché mentre purifichiamo l’aria all’interno degli edifici la espelliamo contaminata all’aperto e la respiriamo quando usciamo per una boccata d’aria fresca.

Allo stesso modo stiamo rovinando molte altre risorse naturali e distruggendo bellissimi paesaggi, fiori e uccelli [ ... ]. The very fact that although in the past man could walk from one end of his city to the other, he cannot do so today, shows the inhuman dimensions of the city. Of course he can use an automobile to achieve his end, but he must be able to pay for it and, if he cannot drive, pay someone to drive it; and the risks on the road are many.

The air we breathe is not suitable for man, neither is the water we drink.

We have to purify them both, but even so the danger will not be eliminated, since while we purify the air inside the buildings we throw the contaminated air outdoors and breathe it when we go out for some fresh air.

In the same way we are spoiling many other natural resources - spoiling land and destroying beautiful landscapes, flowers and birds [...]

IL PICCO DI HUBBERT La grande crescita economica e prosperità del XX secolo sono dovute in gran parte all’utilizzo di una risorsa energetica - il petrolio - estremamente efficiente, versatile e a basso costo. Il petrolio rappresenta oggi quasi il 40% dell’energia primaria generata e circa il 90% dell’energia usata nei trasporti.

Cosa succederebbe se tutto questo venisse meno, o non fosse più a basso costo? Nel 1956 il geofisico americano Marion King Hubbert propose la teoria del picco. Partendo inizialmente dall’osservazione empirica dei dati relativi alla “storia estrattiva” di un giacimento minerario e dei fattori economici che possono intervenire in una economia di mercato quando ci si trova a che fare con una risorsa fisicamente limitata (come ad esempio il petrolio), si propone di prevedere, la data di produzione massima della risorsa estratta nel giacimento. Il punto di produzione massima, oltre il quale la produzione può soltanto diminuire, viene definito come picco di Hubbert.

Prevedere che il petrolio diverrà sempre meno disponibile ed economico in un futuro a breve termine, impone di ricercare sostituti adeguati per i principali campi di applicazione del petrolio.

HUBBERT’S PEAK The great economic growth and prosperity of the twentieth century are due in large part to the use of energy resources, such as oil that is extremely efficient, versatile and low cost. The oil now represents almost 40% of primary energy generated and about 90% of energy used in transport.

What if all this was over, or was not cheaper? In 1956, the American geophysicist Marion King Hubbert proposed the theory of the peak. Starting initially from the empirical data relating to the “extractive history” of a mineral deposit and economic factors that may intervene in a market economy when you are dealing with a physically limited resource (such as oil), it is proposed to predict the date of maximum production of the resource extracted in the reservoir. The point of maximum production, beyond which the production can only decrease, is defined as Hubbert peak.

Predict that oil will become less and less available and affordable in the short-term future, forces us to research suitable substitutes for the main application fields of oil.

CHI DEVE CAMBIARE DI PIÙ?

CHI (E PERCHÈ) È PIÙ DIPENDENTE DAL PETROLIO? Gli Stati Uniti sono il Paese più petroliodipendente. Rappresentano il 5% della popolazione mondiale, ma consumano un quarto del petrolio del mondo e importano più della metà del petrolio che impiegano. Gran parte della domanda sproporzionatamente elevata di petrolio è dovuta alla demografia fortemente suburbana dell’ America, i residenti sono spesso soliti guidare per lunghi tratti, piuttosto che utilizzare i mezzi pubblici o andare a piedi. Gli Stati Uniti hanno centri abitati molto giovani, in particolare le periferie, e sono progettati per essere attraversati in auto.

Questo tipo di periferia, che decentra e disperde la popolazione, non ha fatto che crescere nel tempo. Non c’è da meravigliarsi che, nel corso dell’ultimo decennio, le periferie a bassa densità siano cresciute di tre volte rispetto al tasso delle città che circondano.

WHO HAS TO CHANGE THE MOST? WHO (AND WHY) IS THE GREATEST OIL ADDICTED? The United States is the country most de- pendent on oil. They represent 5% of the world population, but they consume a quarter of the world’s oil and imports more than half of the oil that they use. It’s no secret that America’s heavily suburban demographics are behind much of its disproportionately high demand for oil, chiefly because it causes residents to drive often commuting long di- stances rather than use public transportation or walk. America’s young population centers, especially suburbs, were largely designed to be crossed by car. That suburban infrastructure, which by design decentralizes and disperses the population, has only grown over time.

It’s no wonder that, over the last decade low density suburbs grew at three times the rate of the cities they surround.

LA GRANDE GRIGLIA AMERICANA La Northwest Ordinance del 1787 era un atto del Congresso della Confederazione degli Stati Uniti. L’effetto principale del decreto fu la creazione del territorio del Nord-Ovest come il primo territorio organizzato del sud della regione dei Grandi Laghi degli Stati Uniti, a nord e ad ovest del fiume Ohio, e ad est del fiume Mississippi.

La Land Ordinance nasce nel 1784 per opera di Thomas Jefferson che propone una suddivisione delle terre al Congresso continentale degli Stati Uniti, per questo nota anche con il nome di griglia jeffersoniana. L’ordinanza aveva come obiettivo immediato quello di raccogliere fondi attraverso la vendita dei terreni. Dopo la fine della guerra rivoluzionaria oltre tre/quarti del territori statunitensi erano passati a questa suddivisione rettangolare.

La terra doveva essere sistematicamente organizzata in township quadrate di sei miglia (9,656 km) per lato. Ognuna di queste township veniva ulteriormente suddivisa in 36 sezioni di un miglio quadrato (2,59 km ²) o 640 acri. Queste sezioni potevano poi essere ulteriormente suddivise per la essere rivendute dai coloni e degli speculatori fondiari.

THE GREAT AMERICAN GRID The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was an act of the Congress of the Confederation of the United States. The primary effect of the ordinance was the creation of the Northwest Territory as the first organized territory of the United States of the region south of the Great Lakes, north and west of the Ohio River, and east of the Mississippi River.

The Land Ordinance was established in 1784 through the work of Thomas Jefferson, who proposes a subdivision of land to the Continental Congress of the United States, for this is also known as the Jeffersonian grid. The order had as its immediate goal to raise funds through the sale of the land, after the end of the Revolutionary War more than three / quarters of U.S. territories had passed in this subdivision rectangular. The land was to be systematically organized in townships of six square miles (9.656 km) on a side. Each of these townships are further divided into 36 sections of one square mile (2.59 km ²) or 640 acres. These sections can then be further subdivided for resale by settlers and land speculators.

Ogni quadrante se destinato a uso residenziale contiene al suo interno otto blocchi, dove sono contenute le abitazione, in media dalle trentasei alle quaranta unità.

GLI EFFETTI DELLA LAND ORDINANCE La griglia voluta da Jefferson per costruire una Repubblica fondata sulla agricoltura ha portato effetti ben diversi da quelli che erano gli interessi originari, ha portato cioè alla formazione di una nazione fondata sull’automobile.

La forma delle città americane odierne è infatti il risultato di uno sviluppo urbano fondato sulle basi della Land Ordinance del 1784.

Le città sono costruite per blocchi residenziali che fanno riferimento per ogni esigenza a centri urbani forniti di servizi terziari e centri commerciali, gli abitanti di questi sobborghi sono così costretti ad utilizzare l’automobile per soddisfare ogni loro necessità.

LAND ORDINANCE EFFECTS The grid wanted by Jefferson to build a Republic founded on agriculture has led to very different effects from those who were the original interest, it led to the formation of a nation founded on the car.

The shape of today’s American cities is the result of urban development founded on the basis of the 1784 Land Ordinance.

Cities are made of residential blocks that refer for every need to urban centers that are supplied of tertiary services and shopping centers, the inhabitants of these suburbs are for this reason forced to use car to satisfy all their needs.

LO SVILUPPO PERIFERICO DELL’AMERICA SUBURBANA Dal 1970 la maggior parte della crescita economica e della popolazione della nazione si è verificata in 30 grandi regioni metropolitane, per lo più nei loro anelli esterni tentacolari. Molti di questi luoghi stanno seguendo il sistema “build-out”, con i relativi problemi: come l’aumento del traffico e i conflitti tra sviluppo e “Infrastrutture verdi”.

Mentre molte città e periferie interne al ring stanno ora sperimentando esperienze di “infill” e una rinnovata crescita della popolazione, se le tendenze e le politiche attuali continueranno, la maggior parte della crescita prevista si verificherà in nuovi anelli esterni metropolitani a bassa densità con un estensione incontrollata. THE BUILDING OUT OF SUBURBAN AMERICA Since 1970 the vast majority of the nation’s economic and population growth has occurred in 30 large metropolitan regions, mostly in their sprawling outer rings. Many of these places are approaching “build-out”, increasing traffic congestion and creating conflicts between development and “green Infrastructure”.

While many cities and inner-ring suburbs are now experiencing infill development and renewed population growth, if present trends and policies continue, the vast majority of expected growth will occur in new outer rings of low-density metropolitan sprawl.

The buildingout of America will take a toll on more than just the national treasury - it will have dramatic effects on the nation’s economy, environment and quality of life. The sprawling pattern of growth is contributing to inescapable road congestion, which leads to increased shipping time and costs.

Farmland near urban areas is constantly disappearing underneath residential subdivisions and big-box retail outlets. SPRAWL Lo sprawl è un concetto poliedrico incentrato sull’espansione a bassa densità definita dall’utilizzo dell’automobile.

La zona dei Grandi Laghi, come gran parte del territorio americano, è definita da questo modello di urbanizzazione.

Lo sviluppo a sprawl non è compatto: ne consegue un elevato consumo di aree agricole e naturali.

Ci sono tre generazioni di periferia che variano in forma e in relazione alla urbanità e pedonabilità: prima della guerra, periferia del dopoguerra, ed esurbi di fine del 20 ° secolo.

Mentre prima della guerra le periferie definivano intere comunità, negli ultimi due tipi il pedone abbandona il vicinato a favore di una dispersione autocentrica.

Per comprendere meglio questo fenomeno, è necessario osservarlo a scala regionale e considerare un contesto più ampio. SPRAWL Sprawl is a multifaceted concept focused on low-density expansion defined by the use of the automobile.

The Great Lakes area, as much of of North America, is defined by this type of development of territorial growth.

Sprawl development is not compact, thus resulting in a high consumption of agricultural and natural land.

There are three generations of suburbs that vary in shape and in relation to urbanity and walkability: pre-war, postwar suburbs, and exurbs of the end of the 20th century.

While before the war the suburbs defined entire communities, in the last two types pedestrian leaves the neighborhood in favor of a car-centric dispersion.

Order to understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to observe it at a regional scale and to consider a broader context.

The transport infrastructure is the lifeblood of Great Lakes region, and the congestion is therefore a serious threat to the productive sectors and thinking of the expected population growth, the whole becomes even more dramatic.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has estimated that since 1970 the population has increased by 30%, the number of licensed drivers increased by 64%. The registered vehicles increased by 87%, and the miles traveled have increased by 125%.

PREMESSA Nel futuro prossimo la disponibilità di risorse petrolifere è destinata a subire una lenta ma progressiva diminuzione. Questo porterà alla crisi di modelli insediativi, approcci architettonici e atteggiamenti sociali finora totalmente dipendenti dal trasporto automobilistico individuale.

L’analisi delle conseguenze spaziali di tali modelli sulle città odierne ci hanno portato ad individuare in Chicago (Illinois, US) come caso studio altamente significativo e paradigmatico sotto vari aspetti.

La storia di Chicago, dalla sua fondazione al giorni d’oggi, si rivela profondamente segnata da un costante sviluppo urbano, infrastrutturale, economico e sociale. Alcune fasi in particolare, come lo sviluppo del trasporto cittadino su rotaia, l’apertura delle highway e l’esplosione del trasporto automobilistico di massa del dopoguerra, hanno fortemente connotato la forma e struttura urbana.

Gli ultimi cinquanta anni hanno consolidato il ruolo dell’automobile nello sviluppo di modelli insediativi diffusi e dipendenti dalle risorse petrolifere.

FOREWORD In the near future the availability of oil resources is destined to undergo a slow but gradual decline. This will lead to the crisis of settlement patterns and architectural and social attitudes that have so far been totally dependent on the individual car transport. The analysis of the spatial consequences of these models on today’s cities have led us to identify in Chicago (Illinois, U.S.) as a case study highly significant and paradigmatic in many respects.

Chicago’s history, from its foundation to the present day, show themselves profoundly marked by a constant urban, infrastructural, economic and social development. Some phases in particular, such as the development of railroads and introduction of streetcars in the city, the opening of the highway and the post-war explosion of car transport, have strongly characterized the urban fabric. The last fifty years have strengthened the role of car in the development of suburban sprawl and in general settlement patterns that are reliant on oil resources.

SCOPO DEL PROGETTO Il progetto si propone di fornire strategie e soluzioni insediative che permettano alla città di riappropriarsi della propria indipendenza dal petrolio e dall’automobile. L’applicazione e verifica di tali strategie ad un caso studio paradigmatico consente di estendere la validità del modello teorico in luoghi e scale d’intervento differenti.

La particolare struttura di Chicago, costruita sulla griglia jeffersoniana del 1785 contribuisce ad astrarre il modello e conferire alle soluzioni individuate un campo di applicabilità esteso.

Il progetto si confronta con l’esistente analizzando tendenze in atto, processi già avviati che possiedono un inerzia propria e devono essere assecondati e pianificati, oltre che fragilità che devono esse protette e convertite in potenzialità.

AIM OF THE PROJECT The project aims to provide strategies and solutions for settlements that enable the city to regain its independence from oil and from the car. The application and verification of these strategies to a case study paradigm allows to extend the validity of the theoretical model in different places and scales of intervention. The particular structure of Chicago, built on the Jeffersonian grid of 1785 helps to abstract the model and give to the identified solutions a wide range of applicability.

The project is compared with the existing analyzing trends, processes that have already started an inertia of its own and must be seconded and planned, as well as weaknesses that need them protected and converted into potential.

LE MISURE DELLA POLIS In una prima fase conoscitiva abbiamo ritenuto fondamentale individuare e fissare alcuni dati storici inerenti alle dimensioni, alle densità e alla popolazione delle antiche poleis. Per avere un quadro più completo abbiamo cercato di ricostruire una linea temporale che conduce fino alle progettazioni contemporanee di città di nuova fondazione come Chandigarh o Islamabad.

Il riferimento e la misura di progetto per le nostre nuove poleis è il miglio perciò è sempre posto in relazione con i casi studio. [quadrato rosso] Dall’ analisi emerge che le città di antica formazione hanno quasi tutte una superficie simile a quella del miglio, fatta eccezione per le capitali dell’impero, e una densità di popolazione molto elevata se paragonata a quella dei giorni nostri, questo perchè in esse abitavano la quasi totalità di popolazione che ne riceveva vantaggi e protezione, la città in passato era un luogo sicuro, in netta contradizione con la città ottocentesca e quella attuale che vengono spesso demonizzate.

THE MEASURES OF THE POLIS In a first cognitive phase, we considered it essential to identify and fix some historical data regarding to size, density and population of the ancient polis. To get a more complete overview we have tried to trace a timeline leading up to the contemporary designs of the newly founded cities like Chandigarh or Islamabad.

In our new poleis the reference and measure of the project is a mile. Therefore, it is always seen in relation to the case studies. [Red Square] Analysis shows that almost all the cities of ancient formation have a surface similar to that of mile except for the capital of the empire, and a very high density of population density when compared to today. This is because in these cities lived almost the entire population who received benefits and protection. The city was a safe place in the past, in contrast with the nineteenthcentury city and the current one that are often demonized.

PERCHE’ LA POLIS? L’idea che la piccola, romantica città d’altri tempi sia adeguata all’era dell’uomo contemporaneo che ha sviluppato la scienza e la tecnologia è un’ idea sbagliata. In quanto l’uomo ha sviluppato nuovi tipi dinamici di insediamenti e di interconnessioni. Il passo della antica griglia nel corso degli anni si è dilatato sempre più, influenzato dai nuovi mezzi di trasporto che hanno reso possibili distanze lunghe in brevi tempi, figlio di questa tendenza è l’insediamento suburbano a bassa densità.

Quello che vogliamo salvare della polis è l’organizzazione interna, la vita sociale e i limiti definiti, cinti da mura virtuali, per ritrovare la protezione e l’autarchia di cui abbiamo bisogno in un epoca dove il costo dei carburanti sarà destinato a salire, bisognerà ridimensionare il proprio “raggio”, le reti/ connessioni sarannò sempre disponibili e sicuramente incrementate, l’auspicio che si può fare è l’utilizzo di mezzi collettivi a discapito della automobile, che profondamente ha segnato il territorio negli ultimi settant’anni.

WHY THE POLIS? The idea that the small, romantic town of other times is appropriate to the era of modern man, who developed the science and technology, is wrong.

DIAGRAMMA DI VORONOI IN DISTANZA MAHNATTAN La distanza di Manhattan, studiata da Hermann Minkowski nel XIX secolo, è un tipo di geometria in cui la metrica usuale della geometria euclidea è stata sostituita da una nuova metrica in cui la distanza tra due punti è la somma delle differenze (in valore assoluto) delle loro coordinate. È anche conosciuta come distanza city-block, alludendo alla struttura a griglia delle città americane.

In matematica, il diagramma di Voronoi è un modo di suddividere lo spazio in un numero di regioni. Un set di punti chiamati generatori vengono specificati inizialmente, e per ogni punto corrisponderà una regione contenente tutti i punti più vicini a quel generatore rispetto a ogni altro generatore.

The mathematical concept of “Manhattan distance” is used in the project as a basic principle to influence the Voronoi tessellation.

The tessellation, influenced by the structure of the grid city, it becomes perfectly perpendicular or diagonal to the existing roads, retaining the form established by the Land Ordinance.

TRASPORTO URBANO Le regioni sono chiamate celle di Voronoi. Si può anticipare come esse costituiranno il confine in cui si svolgeranno i ragionamenti sulle strategie di trasporto alternativo e indipendenza dall’auto, le densità abitative e la struttura urbana.

TOPOGRAFIA DELLO SPRAWL Si espone qui una fase fondamentale del ragionamento, che rappresenta l’approccio a larga scala in relazione allo scenario definito nell’introduzione.

Le strategie urbane per il futuro , soprattutto se distante, per essere valide devono avere un fondamento analitico e teorico basato su tendenze urbane già in atto e destinate a proseguire ed amplificarsi parallelamente al consolidamento dello scenario petrolifero previsto. Le mappe scelte per l’analisi sono quindi direttamente o indirettamente legate alla dipendenza dal trasporto automobilistico, sia esso alternativamente causa o effetto delle modificazioni nella struttura urbana e della qualità della vita degli abitanti. È evidente come un progetto che si confronti con la dipendenza da risorse, debba essere basato principalmente sul riconoscimento delle fragilità e criticità che da essa ne derivano.

Questo approccio si traduce nella contrapposizione tra aree critiche ed aree resistenti - performanti. La lettura simultanea e gerarchizzata di tali livelli con differenti aree di criticità e potenzialità permette la creazione di una mappa unificata e ponderata che rappresenta la città in relazione allo scenario identificato.

VERSO UNA CHICAGOPOLIS Il confine di una città che mira a ricostituire un rinnovato rapporto con la campagna circostante non può essere qualcosa di rigido e politico, bensì deve valutare il paesaggio che la circonda.

Per questo il nuovo limite da cui sono partite le nostre analisi si congiunge con le infrastrutture verdi presenti e future, ricalcando il corso di fiumi, foreste e specchi d’acqua che hanno costituito fino ad ora una zona cuscinetto nei confronti dell’urbanizzazione.

Dalla mappatura effettuata in precedenza, sono state riconosciute le potenzialità e criticità delle diverse aree della città. Abbiamo potuto riconoscere determinate aree (rosse) più performanti: entro il loro limite virtuale è attualmente insediato quasi un quarto della popolazione, grazie anche alla maggiore densità rilevata in tali centri.

Questo dato concorre positivamente alla fattibilità di una redistribuzione della popolazione, decidendo di concentrare maggiormente nei centri che già manifestano questa tendenza.

I grafici della distribuzione percentuale chiarificano i diversi rapporti tra abitanti che vivono nell’area attuale delle future polis e delle zone che dovranno tendere negli anni a svuotarsi (nero) per compattarsi con la polis. In mancanza di combustibili fossili, le comunità dovranno avvicinarsi creando dei nuclei di interessi comuni, dove servizi, lavoro, scuole, siano a pochi passi dalle abitazioni, una sorta di piccola cittadella pre-ellenistica, il più possibile autarchica ma pur sempre legata ad una rete efficiente che mette in comunicazione fra loro le altre polis.

Dalla concentrazione di popolazione in determinate aree, si ottiene che in altre ci sarà un conseguenziale svuotamento, e proprio come accadeva nell’organizzazione della polis, la chora, la parte esterna alla città, dovrà soddisfare in parte la richiesta di cibo, ritornando quindi una zona agricola.

Se tutta la popolazione si avvicinerà alla vita collettiva della polis, solo una piccola parte continuerà ad abitare al di fuori, nella così detta chora, saranno degli insediamenti rurali “Jeffersoniani” che gestiranno la produzione di queste aree.

CINQUE MILIONI IN CINQUANTA MIGLIA QUADRATE Un aspetto fondamentale del progetto è il tentativo di legarsi fortemente allo stato di fatto e alle criticità e potenzialità che lo caratterizzano in relazione allo scenario. Una progressiva mutazione della città in cento anni può essere pianificata solo a partire da tendenze in atto, per assicurare la fattibilità e la validità delle intenzioni progettuali. Le successioni cronologiche di immagini vogliono evocare la consequenzialità logica e sottolineare la lenta ma graduale progressione verso la visione finale.

Vaste aree della città presentano edifici vacanti, alti costi per il trasporto degli abitanti, mancanza di fornitura alimentare. Si rilevano contrasti sociali e discriminazione.

Lo spostamento degli abitanti verso zone più performanti (tendenza già in atto) e la modifica della struttura urbana può essere supportato da strumenti legislativi urbanistici, investimenti in nuove infrastrutture, incentivi per la demolizione, il trasferimento di residenza e soprattutto per il recupero e la nuova costruzione di edifici all’interno delle poleis. Nuove attività agricole verranno incentivate nella chora, l’area che circonderà ogni polis.

Gli abitanti dei nuovi nuclei autarchici beneficeranno della loro indipendenza dall’automobile, in termini di risparmio monetario e qualità della vita, nel ritrovato rapporto con la ruralità circostante e la disponibilità di verdi pubblici diffusi.

Le sequenze temporali nelle pagine seguenti presentano in una panoramica multiscalare alcuni tra i “parametri vitali” che caratterizzano lo sviluppo della regione, delle città, dei quartieri, oltre che influenzare la vita urbana degli abitanti che vi risiedono.

FIVE MILLIONS IN FIFTY SQUARE MILES A key aspect of the project is the attempt to bind strongly the existent and potential problems and characterize it in relation to the scenario. A gradual mutation of the city in a hundred years can be scheduled only from trends, to ensure the feasibility and validity of the design intentions. MISURE DELLA DENISTÀ Le differenti misure quantitative di densità prese in considerazione sono: unità abitative per ettaro o acro, persone per ettaro o acro, e il rapporto superficie (FAR), ovvero il rapporto tra area costruita su area lotto.

Anche se ogni misurazione fornisce buone informazioni su un luogo, da sole, non dipingono un quadro completo della densità. Per ottenere una rappresentazione accurata della densità è importante guardare tutti e tre i valori.

Misurare il numero di persone in una determinata area può essere utile, tuttavia, non misura la quantità di spazio vitale a persona.

OBIETTIVO DENSIFICATORIO Nel dimensionamento delle poleis abbiamo cercato di stabilire un obiettivo di densità che fosse compatibile con il contesto geografico e storico del luogo.

Inoltre esso doveva essere in grado di soddisfare con le proprie caratteristiche dimensionali, gli obiettivi densificatori pianificati attraverso le sequenze temporali.

Il North End di Boston si è rivelato un caso studio molto indicato soprattutto per la quantità di letteratura specifica disponibile, e la possibilità di reperimento di dati esatti in varie epoche storiche grazie ai numerosi censimenti effettuati nel quartiere.

Il BLOCCO Il sobborgo americano, caratterizzato da una dilatazione urbana a bassa densità edilizia, si trova attualmente in una situazione dove tutta la superficie è ricoperta da piccoli edifici indipendenti, con un grande spreco di spazio che tuttavia non riesce a configurarsi in spazi verdi godibili e progettati.

In un sistema di urbanizzazione così modulare, ogni metro sprecato accresce esponenzialmente, dilatando le distanze in maniera incontrollabile.

La diversità architettonica e tipologica manca totalmente, l’uso misto si riduce ad episodi sparsi a miglia di distanza.

Nei prossimi anni i quartieri dovranno perciò contrarsi ed accrescersi in modo tale da poter sfruttare al meglio le relazioni di vicinato. Il primo passo è quindi quello di studiare il blocco tipo, onnipresente, come un potente dispositivo per capire gli interventi possibili e applicarli in maniera estensiva. Una tendenza auspicabile per la riuscita del progetto sarà l’utilizzo dei mezzi di trasporto collettivo, così facendo si potrà da subito vedere come

BLOCKS The American suburb is characterized by low-density urban sprawl, is currently in a situation in which the entire surface is covered with small independent buildings with a big waste of space which, however, fails to take shape in green spaces designed and enjoyable . In a system of urbanization so modular, each meter wasted increases exponentially, expanding the distances uncontrollably. The architectural and typological diversity are totally lacking, the mixed-use is reduced to scattered episodes. In coming years, districts must therefore shrink and grow in order to strengthen neighborly relations. The first step is therefore to investigate the block type, omnipresent, as a powerful device to understand the possible interventions and apply them extensively. STRATEGIE E BENEFICI Le strategie per migliore la qualità architettonica e per poter aumentare la densità del blocco tipo prevedono di unire le vecchie abitazioni in case a schiera senza perciò avere quegli spazi interstiziali tra le unità, questo a vantaggio di un’inferiore perdita di calore dovuta alla minore superfice disperdente e di una maggiore durabilità dello stabile non soggetto a condensa.

Per acquistare una maggiore quantità di luce, aria e spazi aperti, il lungo lotto viene bucato da patii/corti poste anche a varie altezze, offrendo un maggior comfort alla vita quotidiana, grazie alle varietà di viste che ne derivano.

Non da meno grazie all’unione tra le abitazioni il quartiere acquista più sicurezza.

FUSED GRID La Fused Grid rappresenta una sintesi di due concetti di rete ben noti e ampiamente utilizzati: la “griglia” e il modello “Radburn” o anche “suburban”.

Entrambi i concetti sono stati autocoscienti tentativi di organizzare lo spazio urbano per l’abitazione. La griglia è stata concepita e applicata a partire dal 2000 a.c. in un era in cui l’auto non era ancora concepita, e ha prevalso fino al 1900 circa. Il modello “Radburn” emerso nel 1929 una trentina di anni dopo l’invenzione dell’automobile a motore e in previsione della sua posizione dominante eventuale come mezzo per la mobilità e il trasporto. Entrambi questi modelli appaiono in tutto il Nord America. “Fused” si riferisce ad una ricombinazione sistematica delle caratteristiche essenziali di ciascuno di questi due modelli di rete.

Il sistema tradizionale “griglia” è altamente connettivo. Il traffico è in grado di scorrere in maniera molto efficiente, perché ci sono così tante opzioni diverse per viaggiare tra due punti. Questa diffusione di traffico è un vantaggio per i ciclisti ei pedoni, che possono optare per strade a basso volume di traffico.

Il modello “suburban”, tentacolare con cul de sac, invece, offre un elevato livello di privacy a chi vive in zone residenziali. Tutto il traffico passante è limitato alla strada principale. Il rovescio della medaglia è che le strade principali possono diventare congestionate e ci sono poche scelte a disposizione dei ciclisti e pedoni.

La domanda che ci dobbiamo porre è se la fused grid può essere il meglio dei due modelli?

L’automobile ha sicuramente una connettività limitata, mentre la bicicletta e il pedone possono ancora accedere a tutte le scale della rete. Si tratta di una situazione win-win. Non solo per i proprietari di case isolati dagli effetti negativi delle automobili, ma anche perchè c’è un incentivo ad utilizzare i modi di trasporto alternativi. Auspicabilmente, di conseguenza, la congestione può essere superata.

FUSED GRID The Fused Grid represents a synthesis of the two concepts of network well known and widely used: the “grid” model and the “Radburn” or “suburban”. Both concepts have been selfconscious attempts to organize the urban space for the house. The grid was devised and implemented from 2000 BC in an era in which the car was not yet conceived, and prevailed until about 1900. The model “Radburn” emerged in 1929, thirty years after the invention of the motor and in anticipation of its eventual dominance as a means of mobility and transport. Both of these models are appearing all over North America. “Fused” refers to a systematic recombination of the essential characteristics of each of these two network models.

The traditional “grid” is highly connective. The traffic is able to flow very efficiently, because there are so many different options to travel between two points. This broadcast traffic is an advantage for cyclists and pedestrians, who may opt for the low-volume roads.

The model “suburban”, with sprawling cul de sac, however, offers a high level of privacy to those who live in residential areas. All traffic passing is limited to the main road. The downside is that the main roads can become congested and there are few choices available to cyclists and pedestrians.

The question we must ask is whether the fused grid may be the better of the two models?

The car definitely has a limited connectivity, while the bicycle and pedestrian can still access the network at all scales. It is a win-win situation. Not only for homeowners insulated from the negative effects of cars, but also because there is an incentive to use alternative modes of transport. Desirably, as a result, the congestion can be overcome.

DTM (DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL) Il DTM (Digital Terrain Model) di Chicago è stato reperito dal NED (National Elevation Dataset) americano.

A differenza del DSM (Digital Surface Model) o dei dati LIDAR non processati, dove vengono rappresentate anche le altezze degli edifici presenti sul territorio, il DTM viene elaborato per essere “liberato” dagli edifici in modo da ottenere l’esatta superficie del terreno al netto del costruito. Per ottenere questo tipo di mappatura ripulita del costruito vengono utilizzati degli specifici algoritmi.

La mappa ottenuta ha un livello di dettaglio molto alto, ha infatti una risoluzione di 3 metri, che permette di controllare con accuratezza la topografia di Chicago.

L’urbanizzazione e l’infrastrutturizzazione, catalizzate e veicolate dalla preesistente Land Ordinance jeffersoniana hanno obliterato la morfologia del terreno originario.

L’utilizzo del DTM ha permesso di risalire alle reti idriche che sono state interrate e cancellate dalla griglia. Lo scopo dello studio di questa mappa infatti è quello di ristabilire le connessioni verdi lungo i corsi d’acqua preesistenti e sotterranei.

Il dato raster è stato processato tramite il software ArcGIS, simulando il deflusso delle acque piovane tramite gli strumenti Flow Direction, Flow Accumulation.

Ne è risultata una base per la progettazione dei corridoi verdi ecologici. La corretta circolazione delle acque da ovest a est verso il lago Michigan, unita ad una maggiore superficie permeabile potrebbe migliorare la salute delle falde acquifere di Chicago, che da ormai cent’anni prosegue in una gestione idraulica fortemente ingegnerizzata, che ha visto l’inversione del corso del fiume Chicago nei primi del ‘900 come momento culminante.

Tali corridoi ecologici giocheranno inoltre un ruolo importantissimo nei processi di bonifica post deurbanizzazione delle aree destinate alla chora.

DTM (DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL) The DTM (Digital Terrain Model) of Chicago was obtained from the American NED (National Elevation Dataset).

Unlike the DSM (Digital Surface Model), where also the heights of the buildings on the territory are represented, the DTM is processed to be freed from the buildings in order to obtain the exact surface of the ground without the built.

Some specific algorithms are used to obtain this type of mapping that is cleaned from built.

The map obtained has a very high level of detail, has a resolution of 3 meters, which allows to control with accuracy the topography of Chicago.

Urbanization and infrastrutturizzazione, catalyzed and diffused by existing Jeffersonian Land Ordinance, have obliterated the original morphology of the terrain.

The use of DTM allowed to trace the water systems that have been buried and erased from the grid. The purpose of the study of this map is in fact to re-establish green connections along the pre-existing or underground water courses.

The raster data has been processed using ArcGIS software, simulating the stormwater runoff using the tools Flow Direction, Flow Accumulation.

The result is a basis for the design of ecological green corridors. The proper circulation of water from west to east toward Lake Michigan, together with a larger permeable surface could improve the health of aquifers in Chicago, which continues in a hundred years from now a highly engineered hydraulic management, which has seen the reversal of the course of the Chicago River in the the early twentieth century as the climax point.

DTM Designing green networks using high resolution satellite datasets

UN CASO STUDIO, IL DISTRETTO Dopo aver individuato un caso specifico per poter applicare le teorie finora emerse abbiamo voluto denunciare le problematiche che a prima vista, scendendo alla scala del distretto, diventano subito evidenti.

Il quartiere americano come già detto si dilata nel territorio non sfruttando al meglio le sue potenzialità, è palese come il “centro” del nostro distretto studio, che ad oggi conta 17.500 abitanti per un miglio quadrato, sia così modesto con un’altezza di due piani appena.

Tutta l’arteria principale è affiancata da edifici ad uso misto, ma non presentano quella densità che permette di percepirla come centro di una comunità.

Altri punti critici sono riscontrabili nei “blocchi”, si nota come ci siano notevoli spazi vacanti che potrebbero essere colmati giocando un ruolo essenziale nel ridisegno urbano della città e nel raggiungimento degli obiettivi della visione.

A CASE STUDY, THE DISTRICT After identifying a specific case in order to apply the theories that have emerged so far, we wanted to expose the problems that at first sight, descending to the scale of the district, become immediately obvious.

The American district, as mentioned before, expands on territory without making the most of its potential. It is clear that the “center” of our studydistrict, which now has 17,500 inhabitants to a square mile, is so modest with a height of only two floors.

The entire main street is flanked by mixed-use buildings, but doesn’t show a density that allows to perceive it as a community center.

Other critical points are vsible in the “blocks”, we noted that there are significant vacant spaces that could be filled playing an essential role in the urban redesign of the city and in achieving the targets of the vision.

DATI DEL DISTRETTO Abbiamo studiato il distretto dal punto di vista analitico. I dati presi in analisi sono stati gli abitanti teorici che vi risiedono, la superficie edificata, il volume fino ad individuare la sua densità edilizia.

Questi dati sono diventati i cardini del progetto infatti, tenendo conto della densità del distretto, e modificandone i valori attuali abbiamo potuto ottenere diversi scenari di densità.

DISTRICT DATA We studied the district from an analytical point of view. The data used for analysis were those concerning: the theoretical population residing there, the built-up area, the volume in order to identify its building density.

These data have become the foundations of the project in fact, taking into account the density of the district, and changing the current values we were able to obtain different scenarios of density.

PRESETS La densità di popolazione che il nostro futuro distretto doveva assorbire era un dato di partenza, perciò sulla base di questo, abbiamo proceduto ad individuare diversi possibili settaggi, che determinano un notevole aumento della popolazione mediante un incremento della densità edilizia.

Il primo scenario converte tutti i garages in piccole unità abitative. Utilizzando solo questa unica strategia la densità per miglio necessaria non sarebbe soddisfatta, perciò dobbiamo appellarci ad altre soluzioni che combinate possano rispondere alle esigenze del caso.

Fra i vari scenari quello “social” ha un ruolo importante perchè diventa un preset che deve sempre accompagnare il successivo per far sì che la densità risulti verificata. Il sociale propone uno stile di vita collettivo, diminuendo i metri quadri a persona.

Troviamo poi “infill”, con la sua caratteristica di aumentare la densità tra le due linee abitative mediante l’utilizzo dei garages o addirittura nuove costruzioni.

Il “one more floor” è l’input che alza, come dice il nome stesso, tutto di un piano lasciando inalterata l’impronta al suolo.

“Infill” e “one more floor” possono essere addizionati tra loro generando molte variazioni interessanti.

L’ultimo scenario considerato è il cosiddetto modello a “downtown” che offre una città decrescente in altezza a partire dal cuore di essa.

Per ottenere un modello efficiente di polis, i preset devono essere sommati tra loro e rimescolati e applicati in maniera puntuale al caso specifico.

PRESETS The population density which was to be absorbed by our future district was a point of departure. Therefore, based on this, we proceeded to identify different possible settings, which determine a considerable increase of population by increasing building density.

The first scenario converts all garages in small houses. Using this strategy would not be verified population density per mile, so we had to concentrate on other solutions that can be combined to meet the needs of the case.

Among the various scenarios the “social” one has an important role because it becomes a preset that must always accompany the following one to ensure that the density results verified.

The social scenario suggests a collective lifestyle, reducing square meters per person.

Then there is “infill“, with its characteristic of increasing housing density between the two lines through the use of garages or even new construction.

The “one more floor” is the input that up, as the name implies, all of a plan without altering the total footprint area.

“Infill“ and “one more floor” can be added together, generating many interesting variations .

The last scenario considered is the socalled model “downtown” city that offers a decreasing height from the heart of it.

To achieve an efficient model of the polis, the presets should be added together and mixed and applied in a timely manner to the specific case.

LA POLIS, UN CASO STUDIO È stata scelta una polis come caso studio per la verifica della validità dei modelli e dispositivi individuati preliminarmente. Come prima cosa è stato applicato a tutta la polis il modello di rete fused-grid ed il relativo sistema di verdi progettati in base alla topografia del suolo. Alla scala del blocco, sono state applicate le nuove strategie e i settaggi finora descritti, declinati secondo le varie necessità. La validità del progetto è verificata dalla densità edilizia ottenuta nel caso studio del distretto. Il volume è computato tramite software 3D. Parallelamente è stata aumentata la superficie di verde urbano per abitante, oltre a renderlo più diffuso ed accessibile.

Con la densità di popolazione raggiunta è possibile pensare ad una Chicago 2114 in cui la popolazione può vivere totalmente nelle nuove poleis con il rapporto abitanti urbani / abitanti rurali già previsto, liberando totalmente la parte esterna alla polis, ottenendo la cosidetta “chora”.

Oltre la campagna ci sarà una parte più esterna del territorio, la “eschatià” che si trova lungo la fascia di confine.

Quella che in tempi arcaici era terra di nessuno, indivisa e non coltivata, verrà come in origine destinata al legnatico.

A CASE-STUDY POLIS A polis was chosen as a case study to verify the validity of the models and devices identified in advance.
