WONDERLAND ON LAKE GARDA Lake Garda surprises with its wide range of theme parks and entertainment dedicated to the whole family. In the company of your children, you can explore the Adventure Park Busatte, located in Torbole, on the slopes of Monte Baldo, just ten minutes from the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort, which will satisfy adrenaline addicts thanks to its 50 elevated routes from 2 to 10 meters high, a brand new BMX track, crosscountry trails and bike agility path in the pine forest with natural obstacles and overhead swinging bridges, bike trial spot, bike hire and a basketball/volleyball court for a total of 30,000 m² dedicated to sports and well-being amid the beauty of nature. If you want to accompany your children on a journey in the footsteps of life during the Bronze Age, the Pile Dwelling Museum of the nearby Lake Ledro and the remains of the ancient pile-dweller is the place for you: here you will find the scenery suitable for the simulation of prehistory for educational and informative purposes. In particular, in the months of July and August, the museum organizes weekly archaeology workshops of various kinds, such as guided tours with archery, a snack with the shaman, aperitifs with archaeology and much more to please young and old. An additional dwelling site recently included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in Fiavé. Its archaeological significance has emerged thanks 10

to the excavations that took place in the early seventies uncovering different types of inhabited dwellings. The history of these excavations is documented in the pile-dwelling museum through videos and reconstructions. You mustn’t miss MUSE, the new Science Museum of Trento, where children will be delighted by the world of dinosaurs, the beautiful aquarium and the charming tropical greenhouse. And if that were not enough, with your little ones you can experience the magic of Gardaland and cross extraordinary worlds ranging from Burma to Egypt, from Asia to the Old West, from Hawaii to the Middle Ages up to the mysterious world of space and fantastic scenes from cartoons and the adrenaline-pumping roller coasters. Another fantastic stop is the Gardaland Sea Life Aquarium, one of the greatest achievements of this kind, presenting different types and sizes of tanks containing numerous specimens of fish from seas around the globe. In this themed aquarium, several natural ecosystems are reconstructed, starting on a path from the mountain waters of Lake Garda, then moving on to the Mediterranean Sea, to tropical seas and to the great oceans. If you prefer to make a real “dive” into the fun, you just need to choose Caneva Aquapark with its rapids and breathtaking descents, the large pool with ocean waves, slides, water games and much more.

Fantastic Easter on Lake Garda If you are planning to spend a holiday with your children that will allow you to enjoy a mild climate, a nature in bloom and beautiful sunny days with a “lake view”, why not choose Lake Garda? In the spring, our lake is an ideal destination not only for its beauty but also for the wide variety of leisure activities: from sporting events to amusement parks, food and wine events, cultural or folkloric festivals... there’s something for everyone! Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort is ready and waiting for you with a full program of activities and entertainment for you and your children.

Sweet awakening of nature During the spring, the great park of Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort, with its blooming flowers and delicate colours, looks like the garden of Eden, an oasis of rare natural beauty and harmony.

12

The dense texture of the park of the Grand Resort, with its more than 200 species of plants and flowers, is made up of bamboo and palm trees and the typical Mediterranean flora, whose growth is aided by the particular climatic conditions of the Upper Lake Garda, whether it is spontaneous flora as holm oak, laurel, myrtle, arbutus, Italian pine, or cultivated plants, such as olives, cypresses and oleanders. In this area you can find specimens that gardeners from the 1800s considered rarities, like the old specimen of Taxodium distichum, also called bald cypress or swamp cypress, with strong trunks of over 6 feet in circumference, the remarkable Ginkgo biloba, considered living fossils, being the only survivors of a family that reached its peak of development in the Mesozoic era, and the elegant Metasequoia glyptostroboides. Among the noblest residents of the park the majestic Cypress of Kashmir, the old Sophora japonica, the fragrant Camphor tree and the enormous Paulownia deserve a special mention. In the spring, treat yourself to some quiet time in the park, and you cannot miss the flowering of many types of shrubs, a truly gorgeous sight. There is the Callistemon lanceolatus, a shrubby plant known and appreciated for its generous and striking blooms, an evergreen shrub native to Australia and New Caledonia, it has lance-shaped leaves of a rich green colour and bright red flowers, blooming in early summer. You will also find the Myrtus communis (myrtle), a typical Mediterranean shrub with oval, glossy and dark green leaves, and single, fragrant pink or white flowers. The profuse flowering of the myrtle is in late spring and early summer, from May to July. In your wanderings through the park you will encounter Musa paradisiaca, commonly known as the plantain, the largest herbaceous plant with a flower. The leaves are large, flexible and waterproof, are spiral-shaped and during the spring and summer season there is generally

the ripening of the bananas, whose pulp is rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, C, PP, E, minerals and carbohydrates, with nourishing re-mineralizing and stimulating properties for the skin. You can also see the Perovskia atriplicifolia, or Russian sage, a herbaceous perennial which develops a woody shrub, native to Asia. The greyish-green leaves, when crushed, give off a scent of sage. From late spring until summer, small blue flowers bloom at the stems, bunched in spikes. Amid the nature of the lush park you can appreciate the splendor of Punica granatum, or pomegranate, originating in a region extending from Iran to the Himalayan region of Northern India and present in the Caucasus and in the whole Mediterranean area since ancient times. The leaves are shiny and oblong. From May to July, the pomegranate produces tubular flowers, and fruit sprouts from their red chalice. Among the different species of palm trees there are the Brahea dulcis, native to Mexico and Peru, with a rather large trunk, palm-like leaves, small yellowish flowers and yellow, sweet and juicy fruits, the Chamaerops humilis, commonly known as European fan palm, a Mediterranean species with broad, robust and stiff fan-shaped leaves and garish panicle flowers, and the Phoenix canariensis, known as the Canary palm, a large palm tree, native to the Canary Islands, with a dense and impressive foliage, very popular as an ornamental plant in most of the Mediterranean and subtropical regions of the world. If the flowering of these plant species has sparked your interest, continue your tour of the park to discover more natural beauties... you’ll be glad you did!

SPRING TAKES CENTRE STAGE The typical vegetation of the Mediterranean starts to flower and colour the landscape, perfuming the air that has already turned mild. Everywhere, an atmosphere of sweet tranquillity allows you to fully appreciate the natural wonders, to relax, rejuvenate- this is spring on Lake Garda, the season dressed in pastel hues to show all its splendour. Thanks to the pleasant climate, this time of year is ideal for walks or bike rides along the lake, boat trips, exciting mountain biking, climbing adventures, fascinating visits to historical sites, shopping trips and tastings of authentic and genuine products. Particularly striking is the walk along the beach that links Riva del Garda to Torbole along the path from Busatte Park, the well-known adventure park, leading to the village Tempesta, where the view stretches from the blue lake to the green of the olive trees. Here you have the chance to sail the waters of Garda in a boat enjoying the scents and the breeze of the lake, to pedal on two wheels along the Valle dei Laghi bike path, to go on an adrenaline-filled mountain biking trek on the panoramic Trail of Ponale, to climb between walls and cliffs, with summits opening onto spectacular vistas...Garda Trentino has so much to offer in terms of leisure time activities. In addition, monuments, castles and small villages that dot the area captivate with their beauty. For example, in Riva del Garda, the

DU LAC ET DU PARC GRAND RESORT

Praetorian Palace, the Fortress, the Apponale Tower and the Bastion bear testimony of the glories of the past, the medieval town of Canale di Tenno, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the Arco Castle, unique in its intricacy, or Drena Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the spectacular desert of Marocche below. To end a perfect day of historical and cultural visits and sports activities, there is nothing better than taking a break to discover the local foods, such as Garda DOP olive oil, from the Agraria Riva del Garda, the delicious broccoli of Torbole and carne salada (cured meat). In spring, Garda Trentino takes centre stage for sporting events, starting with the Techno 293 European Sailing Championship, which will be held April 21 to 27, the Garda Trentino Bike Festival, from May 1 to 4, spectacular events, exciting mountain bike paths and fantastic parties. Also from May 1 to 4, Arcobonsai will reopen its doors to all bonsai enthusiasts, whether they are growers or collectors, and the same space will host Arcofiorithe 15th edition of the floriculture fair.

Autumn to experience and enjoy In the autumn, Lake Garda is a rainbow of colours and Mother Nature shows off her brilliant hues in a season that encompasses unique aromas and tastes. This is the perfect time to enjoy the bounty of the season: the wines and the delicious chestnuts, to enjoy pleasant walks along the banks of the lake or amid the peaceful olive groves and vineyards to practice your favourite sports, including sailing, surfing or mountain biking, and to participate in fascinating events. The first starts right from Riva del Garda with the ADAC Trentino Classic, September 20 to 24, a classic car rally and guests of our resort, the European Championship Ufo 22, October 2 to 5, the fourth stage of the national sailing circuit race, the Riva Grand Prix and Mobility Expo, October 4 to 5, the only motor exhibition in the whole region, and the 8th international Lake Garda Marathon, October 12, 2014, an international street racing competition. From October 11 to 19, Arco is the protagonist of the 36th international chess competition, and October 17 to 19, the Tenno 36th Chestnut Fair, a feast with a long tradition highlighting the local product of Pranzo di Tenno. Even if the weather is not perfect, there is absolutely no risk of getting bored! MAG, the Alto Garda Museum in Rocca di Riva is certainly worth a visit, where you can discover the history and art of the territory thanks to valuable historical and artistic documents, and the Mart, the Museum of Modern and contemporary Art of Rovereto and Trento, housing a rich collection of art ranging 16

from Futurism to Pop Art, Arte Povera to Realism, up to the most contemporary interpretations. Inside, famous works are exhibited by Depero, Balla, CarrĂ , de Chirico, Morandi and Fontana. In fitting with the permanent collection of the Mart, renewed every 4-5 months, these works relate with the masterpieces of international artists. Another equally valid alternative is MUSE, the new Science Museum in Trento, a centre for the dissemination of scientific culture with a striking architectural design, combining the interest in natural history and research, attention to ethical and social issues and topical issues, such as ecology and sustainable development. The path of MUSE uses the metaphor of the mountain to tell the life on Earth. We begin from the fourth floor with terrace: sun and ice, then delve into the themes of biodiversity, sustainability and evolution, and then finish on the subterranean level with the dinosaur gallery, large aquariums and fantastic tropical greenhouse. In addition, exhibitions and events are regularly organized and for children who want to learn, observe and experience, there is a dedicated space called Maxi Ooh!, where they can sharpen their five senses. Seeing is believing!

THE GOLDEN EMBRACE OF THE PARK If you decide to spend a relaxing holiday at the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort in autumn, you should certainly pause to contemplate the abundance of colours in the park surrounded by the sweet silence of nature. At first glance, you will be attracted to the Arbutus unedo, or strawberry tree, a shrub or small evergreen tree spread around the countries of the western Mediterranean and along the southern coast of Ireland. Flowering occurs in OctoberNovember and the fruits ripen in autumn. This plant produces flowers and ripe fruits simultaneously, which makes it a particularly ornamental tree for the presence of three bright colors: red fruits, white flowers and green, oval lance-shaped leaves. Then, continuing your walk, you will encounter the Feijoa sellowiana or Acca sellowiana, a slow-growing evergreen shrub native to the highlands of southern Brazil, part of Colombia, Uruguay and northern Argentina. The flowers are small to medium, often in bunches, and they are numerous, pinkish-white in colour

DU LAC ET DU PARC GRAND RESORT

and have many garish red-violet stamens. The petals of the flowers can be used for salads, because they are robust, crisp and sweet, or you can let them melt in your mouth. The fruits are as big as plums, edible and extremely fragrant. The flavour of the pulp is a cross between pineapple and strawberry. Ripening takes place in the months of September and October. The aroma of Osmanthus fragrans, or fragrant osmanthus, will accompany you in your tour of the park. An evergreen shrub native to China and Japan, it has dark green oblong leaves and small and very fragrant tubular flowers, which bloom in autumn, and blue fruits. Their scent is reminiscent of the magnolia grandiflora, gardenia, freesia and lemon. Continuing to explore the park, you can enjoy beautiful blooms of many other species of plants that make up the flora at Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort. A small botanical guide will help you recognize and appreciate their characteristics.

Flavours of the past with a modern twist 20

At Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort, every time a guest sits down at the table he will have the chance to appreciate authentic tastes and flavours infused with modern ideas, where “Made in Italy” is the undisputed star.

Marco Brink, Executive Chef at the Grand Resort, and his team are great supporters of a gastronomy in step with the times, always in tune with the guest, but never forgetting traditional flavours. The Grand Resort proposes a varied cuisine, ranging from a bistro lunch to catered dinners, from ad-hoc menus to feasts for connoisseurs, or a table for gourmet à la carte evenings. Trentino cuisine at the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort combines with Mediterranean in a harmonious synergy, creating a triumph of flavours and colours on the plate, neither eccentric nor extreme, but aiming to satisfy the tastes of guests through a serene and seamless approach starting with the ritual of breakfast, served on the veranda from May to September

until 11:00 am or, in the months of July and August and only for guests of Murialdo and La Villa Suites, on the exclusive Roof Garden. Lunch is served at La Capannina, the poolside restaurant open from June to September, and the Terrazza, a snack bar, offers fresh and light summer dishes and stunning views on the secular park of the Grand Resort. Dinner is served in the main restaurant (where you can also have lunch except in July and August), an elegant and sophisticated location serving international and Mediterranean cuisine, or at “La Capannina by night”, the chic and intimate restaurant, open from mid-June to mid-September, offering an à la carte menu immersed in the natural beauty of the park.

Journalist

INTERVIEW Marco Brink

IMAGINE A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY A GREAT MASTER WHILE PLAYING A GREAT WORK... ... the result is obvious, a celestial melody. Now think about replacing the theatre with a large kitchen, 22 musicians with as many chefs, the maestro with executive chef Marco Brink. No musical instruments but pots and pans, no musical scores but classic recipes, no melodies but wonderful aromas coming from appetizers, main courses, side dishes, desserts, buffet. Two different worlds, but the result is the same: the pleasure of trying something unique and creating an exciting experience. In the first scenario you might be at La Scala in Milan or at the Arena di Verona; in the second, you are certainly at the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort in Riva del Garda.

22

This is a special place where the guest is at the centre. Do you know the simplest dish to cook in Italy? Certainly spaghetti with tomato sauce. Besides the pasta, this dish has only four ingredients: olive oil, tomatoes, basil and onion. But not at the Du Lac et Du Parc where Brink uses twelve different ingredients and obviously does not reveal the recipe. He explains.

And it’s all scored in the cookbook. A sort of culinary bible written by Brink. With that much passion for spaghetti with tomato sauce you can imagine how much work there is behind the daily menu that is offered to guests of Du Lac et Du Parc. Tradition, precision, planning and imagination are the Brink’s secrets.

The sauce should be able to blend the various flavours in a balanced manner to ensure a full and harmonious taste. Just like an orchestra playing a symphony. The more instruments play, the more is the harmonic melody: so we use four different kinds of tomatoes to reach the balanced, unmistakable flavour.

How am I inspired? Simply by going out on the lake and windsurfing. It’s a true feeling of freedom, speed, and independence. Two hours surfing on Lake Garda helps release tension but it’s also a way to find new ideas for my work. In the kitchen as in sports, we need courage and discipline. Ours is not only a creative activity but also one of great organization. When our guests dine, the idea was conceived ten days before, and from that moment begins a sort of countdown to accomplish many small works of art that can satisfy our guests. In order to fulfil their every need.

But that is not enough. The amount of spaghetti is predetermined: 110 grams, already packaged in batches and ready to be cooked. But it is not over yet: if the person ordering is an Italian, it needs to be cooked for seven minutes and if it’s a foreigner, for eight minutes. Plus an additional minute in the pan.

It’s another secret. Italians like spaghetti that’s more al dente, says Brink, our guests across the border like it a little softer, more velvety.

The menu is the result of great teamwork. And, just like an orchestra, to achieve a great result there must be love... and, concludes Brink, a pulsing heart.

TrentoDoc trentino’s sparkling wine With its understated elegance and charm, TrentoDoc is the direct expression of the territory and an important spokesman of Trentino in the world. Its history is one hundred years old, and it now involves 39 producers, with more than 100 labels. To sanction its value there is also history: TrentoDoc has been assigned the second D.O.C. (Controlled Designation of Origin) label for classic method sparkling wine in the world. It has been more than a hundred years since Giulio Ferrari had the idea of growing Chardonnay grapes in Trentino. The TrentoDoc Institute guarantees the origin of the grapes and the compliance of every aspect of the harvesting and the wine-making to a specific production authority. TrentoDoc is the direct expression of its original territory. The vineyards, mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, grow in a specific

24

in altitude in an area between Lake Garda and the Dolomites, presenting the ideal climatic conditions. “Ours is the only Classical Method in the world that was born in the mountains – explains Enrico Zanoni, President of the TrentoDoc Institute – where the soil and climatic conditions are fundamental for its quality and distinction, to bring out its outstanding and unique characteristics.” These special climatic conditions, combined with the other characteristics (altitude, temperature range, soil type) support the perfect ripening of the grapes, rich in aroma, flavors and organoleptic characteristics, ideal for the conception of a base sparkling wine of high quality. And

like a cocoon that releases a beautiful butterfly, a second fermentation within the bottle guarantees TrentoDoc its exclusive features. Its golden reflections and the dense perlage is just a pleasant prelude to TrentoDoc’s gentle embrace. A new taste, with aromas that only the Trentino soil can give. Vanilla, apricot, tropical fruit, hazelnuts but also freshly baked bread, Golden Delicious apples, white chocolate and jasmine... these are just some of the hints you can discover. An infinite number of notes, a subtle texture, a masterpiece of taste. There are two types of TrentoDoc: Bianco – Millesimato and Reserve – and Rosé. A crystalline color with golden hues, a dense and

persistent perlage, a creamy and compact foam. It should be served cool, never freezing, in large wineglasses at a temperature between 8 and 12 degrees, after cooling in a bucket with ice. TrentoDoc lends itself to all dishes, from appetizers to desserts (the latter only in the demi-sec version), pairing with fish and white meat but also with rice, pasta and even cured meats. It’s a classic combination with aged cow’s milk cheese with and with small savoury pastries. TrentoDoc Rosé, on the other hand, goes well with fish soups, prosciutto, seafood, grilled beef tenderloin and baked poultry.

GARDA TRENTINO

The Agraria of Riva del Garda is synonymous with a great oil Born in 1926 from the love of farmers for their land, today Agraria Riva del Garda in Trentino is an example of cooperative entrepreneurship connected to the territory, bringing together around 300 members and works growing and producing olives for oil. More than 1,200 growers, of which approximately 80 are partners. Thanks to their hard work, this farm has won some prestigious awards in recent years in the international arena. For this reason, the Agraria, as it is commonly called in the region of Garda Trentino, can be seen as an integrated economic system for the development of the territory. It has been continuously providing advice to their members in the countryside, working, transforming, directly marketing and promoting their products through targeted advertising and diffusion of information. The result is a captivating wine and above all a superfine oil: excellent products present on the tables of restaurants in the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort in Riva del Garda. The Agraria in recent years has embraced the concept of a short market chain, from producer to consumer products in the so-called “kilometre zero zone”, i.e. local, from the immediate area, where the quality and sustainability are under close scrutiny. Thus the Linea Uliva line of extra virgin DOP Garda Trentino olive oil, which is known for its excellent quality, reserved for gourmets and chefs,

experts and lovers of good food and tasters of oil, the Linea 46° Parallelo, an extra virgin olive oil expressing all the characteristics related to the “extreme” area of origin, the fruit of the olive trees in the north of Europe, which grow near the 46th parallel, a Mediterranean oasis in the heart of the Alps. This oil comes from careful selection of each batch of olives. Linea 46° Parallelo will appeal to lovers of the outdoors and well-being, interested in a energy-giving, balanced and healthy diet. Finally, the Linea Tradizionale di Famiglia (Traditional Family Line) indicating the production of family-based agriculture, created to fill the need for the daily use of olive oil, without sacrificing the product's quality, a decisive character, typical of a specific area. The new headquarters in Riva del Garda has been designed to welcome visitors and allow them to learn about and taste the local delicacies, the pleasure of wine, the taste of oil, the flavour of meat and cheeses, the goodness of jams, honey and picked vegetables, the authenticity of the products of our territory.

Sara Bartolozzi

Travel writer

INTERVIEW Sara Macchia

To allow you to better appreciate the philosophy behind our Spa & Fitness Centre ArmoniA, we are pleased to offer you these valuable insights by our Spa Manager, Sara Macchia.

SARA MACCHIA

The link between nature and wellbeing is strongly felt at Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort. What can you tell us about that?

Given the beauty of the park and the emotions it offers, can treatments be done outdoors?

The 70,000 square-meter park is undoubtedly a source of well-being itself, a green garden of Eden with over 200 species of flowers and plants, typical of the lake or from all over the world, a small green source of oxygen for walks in the presence of regenerating trees that restore tranquillity. A unique setting for the activities organized by the ArmoniA Spa & Fitness Centre: Yoga, Pilates or the fun and upbeat Zumba. Even the large gym, with Technogym equipment and a relaxation area with comfortable beds has large windows facing – almost immersed in – this magnificent green scenery.

Of course. In the gazebo set up in the park you can, with the right clothing, enjoy treatments such as Thai or Shiatsu, lulled by the sounds of nature. Or, in the shade of palms and cypresses, a real treat for the well-being of the whole body is the Kneipp path. A brief walk knee-deep in water at 16/18° C is a blessing for circulation in the legs and for cellulite. A walk in this path stimulates microcirculation throughout the body and prepares it to receive any kind of treatment, like the peat applications or a relaxing massage.

30

In the course of your treatment do you use local products for a beneficial effect on the body?

What new treatments derive from the union of East and West?

Yes, first of all is the extra virgin olive oil from Garda Trentino. Highly compatible with the acidity of our skin and rich in precious substances such as squalene and phytosterols, this extra virgin olive oil has an emollient and protective effect for the skin thanks to essential linoleic and linoleic fatty acids, the important vitamins K, A, E, D and phenolic compounds. In the treatments, Garda Trentino extra virgin olive oil is combined with Jasmine rice powder, which contains naturally occurring proteins, carbohydrates and lipids and is rich in important functional substances to counteract the effects of free radicals that damage the skin. It can also be combined with Noni trees, that grow wild throughout Southeast Asia, reach up to 6 meters high and produce a light yellow fruit, whose active ingredients have anti-aging and anti-stress properties and give the body a sense of well-being. Another treatment combines Garda Trentino olive oil with coconut oil, cold-pressed to ensure the preservation of all its active ingredients, considered the fruit of life in Asia due to its nourishing, protective and firming properties, gives luster to the skin, helps prevent wrinkles. Finally, we use a specially selected number of herbs.

The union of the emollient, antioxidant and firming properties of Garda Trentino extra virgin olive oil have been combined with the richness of oriental herbs to develop new and unique body treatments. One I suggest is the purifying massage with Garda Trentino extra virgin olive oil, Jasmine rice and coconut, pleasantly exfoliating and very regenerating. Or the creamy body wrap with Garda Trentino extra virgin olive oil and noni, a real antiaging and antioxidant cocktail to plump the skin on your body. Another is the body and face massage with warm medicinal herb sachets, Garda Trentino extra virgin olive oil and coconut, whose delicate pressures dissolve muscle tension, relax and improve tissue oxygenation, stimulate blood circulation through draining and detoxifying, making the skin more toned, elastic and radiant.

Journalist

INTERVIEW Uli Stanciu

MTB AT LAKE GARDA, THE POINT OF VIEW OF ULI STANCIU “Garda Trentino is the Mecca of mountain biking.”

38

The person saying this is not one of the thousands of fans that spend their vacation here every year but Ulrich Stanciu, the German journalist who is considered one of the fathers of mountain biking in Europe.

“Uli”, as he is known in these parts, is the founder of Bike Magazine and already in the first issue offered readers this little corner of paradise for an active holiday. I had already shared the experience of windsurfing on Lake Garda with Paolo Zontini (board member of Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort, editor's note) and when I started the new venture dedicated to MTB it was natural to ask his cooperation and that of Du Lac et Du Parc. In 1988 we did a fantastic piece on Tremalzo. It was January, the magazine had to come out in the spring and we were able to carry out a series of tests on various models of MTB on Garda. When we published the article, readers were enthusiastic. They began to write, and to ask where that place was, to request more information. We began publishing routes. Five years later, again with the help of Paolo, Bike Festival was born, hosted in Riva del Garda on weekends between April and May. After twenty years, the event continues to be a great success. The secret? It’s simple. People want to be able to try the new models in Riva del Garda for free and this year there were 170 brands. Something truly unique.

Sailing, surfing, canyoning, climbing, running, new bike and MTB are some of the activities that tourists can indulge in Garda Trentino. Practically all year round. And the extensive network of trails allows everyone to ride with confidence. For enthusiasts, there is also hiking at high altitudes with spectacular views.

And the secret of the Transalp, the most important stage race of MTB, which always ends in Riva del Garda? A natural conclusion because of the characteristics of Garda, confirms Stanciu. Everything is so agreeable that many competitors after having cycled in the mountains decide to spend a few days of vacation on the lake, in the warming atmosphere.

You’re an expert, able to foresee the future. What is the future of MTB? It’s called E-bike (electric bike). It will create a revolution in the coming years: the same one that brought the MTB to the forefront in the 70s in the cycling world. The E-bike is bound to bring a similar wave of freedom, answers Uli while sipping a white Trentino wine, and the mountain is no longer frightening. This bike offers the freedom to decide and ride with everyone. And it’s designed to break down barriers: families and amateurs can ride in freedom and this is particularly important where the view on the Lake Garda offers incredible emotions to share. Having to climb in altitude discourages many people. Now with this bike there are no more limitations. A gradient change now becomes accessible to novices, fearful of not making it, as well as fans that may feel forced to limit their excursions due to age. The E-bike means freedom for all. To regain a sense of youth and start a new life, sportively speaking.

We are working to create a circuit of 100 routes. No other place in the world has such a wealth and variety of tracks, says Stanciu. Here mountain and lake merge and are complemented by an important factor: the weather is very pleasant.

PONALE: THE FABLED PATH SUSPENDED OVER GARDA It almost seems to be suspended between lake and sky, on the cliffs overlooking Garda, cycling or walking along the old road; today a trail that has been included in the list of historical and environmental sites protected by the Province of Trento since 2004. Ponale offers fresh emotions each year to the hundreds of thousands of bikers and hikers who travel to reach the small village of Pregasina or the charming Val di Ledro. For 150 years Ponale has guaranteed the direct link with the Basso Sarca (now made more accessible via a tunnel between Riva del Garda and Biacesa) and since 2004 it has been transformed into a path that has become a popular tourist attraction for the breathtaking landscape, the beautiful views of Lake Garda, the rock formations overlooking the water and the incredible variety of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation, fascinating visitors who take this path. For this reason, some consider it the most popular bike trail in the world, capable of creating added value to a holiday in the Garda Trentino. It’s impossible to resist the temptation to stop and admire the view and the emotions are

DU LAC ET DU PARC GRAND RESORT

always different, curve after curve and at the end of the seven tunnels located along the path. You climb up the mountain, but the environment and atmosphere are typical of the Mediterranean. Along the route there is a plaque dedicated to Giacomo Cis, the wealthy merchant born in Bezzecca in June 1782, who conceived the bold project to erase the historical isolation of Val di Ledro. Upon his death on January 3, 1851, the road was not yet fully completed. In the past, the road also had a role in the war: into the depths of the rock the path spills into an underground world of tunnels, fortifications, trenches and corridors. The Cut of Ponale is distributed over five levels and is connected to lookouts, shelters and artillery stations positioned to protect the road, the lake and the Sperone aqueduct (put into operation in 1877, but now no longer connected to the Riva del Garda aqueduct). There is also the outdoor artillery battery Fort Theodosius, which owes its name to the discovery in 1860 of some ancient coins dating back to epoch of the Roman Emperor.

BIKING ALONG THE PATHS OF GARDA TRENTINO Santa Barbara Ballino Pass Valle dei Laghi Marocche Drena Tenno

42

In our marvellous landscape, you can ride a bicycle or a mountain bike from March to October, but it is far from unusual to see groups of cyclists in action early or late in the year. Garda Trentino is, without a doubt, a true paradise for bike lovers. The mild weather conditions make this area perfect for professional cycling, who may start their annual training early, but also for amateurs or for families who want to fully experience a gorgeous path. Here, the Giro del Trentino for professionals was born, which is now among the most important stage races in the world. It takes place every year in April. At the end of the month there is also the Bike Festival, among the most important European events dedicated to mountain biking. Garda Trentino offers a series of paths and trails suitable for cycling on the road, alternating between flat and uphill segments. Champions such as Chiappucci, Fondriest and Moser have ridden on these roads. From the "Santa Barbara" climb to those towards Tenno and Ballino Pass, or the tortuous bends of Drena delle Marocche, to the traditional

Giro del Lago (along Lake Garda’s perimeter), excursions toward Trento, Monte Bondone, the Adige Valley and Mount Baldo. Destinations equally sought after by fans of Mtb. A great asset of the lower Sarca is the pedestrian and biking path of the Lake Valley, also called Torbole-Trento. It starts from the shores of Lake Garda, near the mouth of the Sarca river, at the confluence of the paths coming from Riva del Garda and Mori: this well-marked path runs along the riverbank, on the right side of the valley. Going back north towards Arco along the Sarca river, for more than five kilometers you can pleasantly cycle immersed in the quiet of the landscape, until you reach Arco. After crossing the village of Arco, the route resumes at the bridge over the Sarca river with a few parking areas equipped with tables and benches, perfect for a momentary pause. In Ceniga, the route follows the municipal road with some traffic until it reaches Dro, a town embellished with elegant stone portals that decorate the old buildings on the sides of the main town square. It passes the residential area on the northern outskirts, then taking the protected pedestrian and cycling route up to the

DU LAC ET DU PARC GRAND RESORT

former hydroelectric plant in Fies. Finally, there is the small village of Pietramurata, where the alluvial plain of the Sarca begins, thickly covered with vineyards and famous for the production of "Vino Santo": vines and orchards line the top of the embankment along which the track goes on for more than 3.5 km, to the village of Sarche, a junction for the Giudicarie valleys.

43

Trails to discover overlooking the lake Surrounded by enchanting natural beauty, there are numerous paths and scenic cliffs overlooking the lake, ideal for trekking fans who want to practice their favourite sport while taking in breathtaking scenery and important historical and artistic points of interest.

In Garda Trentino you can retrace the past and relive situations that took place over a century ago, such as the route of the “Emperor’s Fortresses, where visitors will be able to put WWI in context first-hand, with the many historical and military fortresses and artefacts to be found, all genuine and for the most part intact. From Mt. Brione to S. Giovanni Cima Rocca with their majestic forts, from the Tagliata del Ponale to TratSaval-Pernici on the Riccabona trail, where you can view the remains of trenches and war barracks, all the way to Mt. Altissimo with the tunnels from the Austro-Hungarian army and the Italian line of defence.

Climbing & iron cord The Garda Trentino area will also astound you for the many via ferrata (iron cord) climbing routes dedicated to enthusiasts. First of all Arco, a world-class climbing destination, along with Nago, Torbole, Dro, Drena and Riva del Garda itself. Worthy of mention are the cliffs, originating between Lake Garda and the Sarca Valley, where famous sportsmen like Manolo, Bass and Mariacher have written the history of climbing. Near Arco are the cliffs of Calvario, Muso dell’Asino, Policromuro, Abissi, i Massi di Prabi, Piazzole, le Placche di Baone - an incomparable concentration of challenges! In Riva del Garda, the vie ferrate are the stars of the show at the Ferrata of Friendship at the SAT Peak, of medium difficulty and exposed, the Ferrata Fausto Susatti and Ferrata Capi Peak, both panoramic and not too exposed. Noteworthy for all lovers of climbing is the Rockmaster Climbing Stadium, located in Prabi, about 200 metres from the centre of Arco. It is a futuristic artificial structure for climbing, home of the World Championship in 2011 and the Rock Master every year, the most prestigious climbing competition in the world.

MUSE

The charm of MUSE, the new science museum for all ages in Trento It’s hard to say if the night’s darkness can increase its appeal: if the traces left by the glass and the natural warmth of wood can still be enhanced when the mountains fade to darkness.

The lines created by star architect Renzo Piano for the new Muse, the Science Museum of Trento, can affect positively both adults and children. The new facility is part of a citadel of science, immersed in a new neighbourhood in Trento, ’Le Albere’, also created from Piano’s imagination. At the same area, Trentino conserves the memory of the manufacturing past: the Michelin plant. Innovation, science and a huge park amid residential buildings are now on the same grounds. The museum covers 12,000 square metres, with five floors plus a basement and a tropical greenhouse. It was built thanks to an € 80 million fund by the Province of Trento, of which € 9 million was spent on the interior, all ’zero gravity’, i.e. on thin cables. The Muse uses the metaphor of the mountain to tell the story of life on Earth. It starts from the top where you can see sun and ice, then it goes down to investigate the issues of biodiversity, sustainability and evolution, until it reaches the basement and the wonders of the tropical greenhouse.

DU LAC ET DU PARC GRAND RESORT

The route starts from the top, as if you were sitting on top of a mountain, and down to the basement following different natural habitats, according to the altitude change. If you follow the time level instead, the first floor leads the visitor from prehistory to the present day, to the models of sustainable environmental development, to finish in the showroom of innovation, where researchers can present the results of their studies to the public. Through fun, games, experimentation and collective reflection, Muse expands the traditional concept of ’museum’ with a strong technological and innovative imprint: the objects on display represent the scientific debate on the relationship between man and environment. The museum echoes the spirit of Trento, which initiated the search for a development model where quality of life and quality of the environment coexist, and that places scientific and technological knowledge as the starting point for guiding the choices of development.

There is also plenty of space for children, such as the multisensory area dedicated to children (0-5 years old) or the largest permanent dinosaur exhibition in the Alps and an interactive forest. A worldwide novelty is the Fab Lab, which is a digital fabrication lab, where everyone can design and create their objects with a 3D printer. This is the same Fab Lab conceived by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Boston, with 60 locations worldwide. Among the attractions worth visiting in-depth there is the largest dinosaur exhibition in the Alps, then there is Maxi-Ooh!, a multi-sensory and unique space dedicated to toddlers (0-5 years), and the journey that leads the visitor upwards from prehistory to the present day, characterized

by the search for sustainable development, to finish with a showroom entirely dedicated to innovation. “Traditionally, science museums – explains the designer Renzo Piano – are quite obscure places. But now around the world they are renewing themselves, such as the one in San Francisco and this one in Trento. The museum should be an open area, accessible and lightweight, bright, but it’s not easy if you want to save energy. It would had been easier if it were a bunker.” The building, constructed in wood and glass, has been certified by Leed Oro, almost the highest rating for wooden buildings. ’’Wood is a beautiful building material - comments Piano - although a bit forgotten.’’

MART Exhibitions Once again in 2014, the MART, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto offers some important insights beginning with those related to World War I, that began a century ago. EL LISSITZKY THE EXPERIENCE OF TOTALITY

MARIO RADICE ARCHITECTURE, NUMBER, COLOR

Curated by Giovanni Marzari

El Lissitzky (Pochinok , 1890 - Moscow, 1941) is one of the most influential, experimental and controversial artists of the early twentieth century. His work as a painter, designer, architect and photographer, and his own life, are distinguished by a constant need to push boundaries. He fused countries and cultures, art and design, East and West. El Lissitzky was a creative mind. For him, work and art are inextricably linked and his artwork needs to be put in relation with architecture, construction and design. The exhibition, curated by Oliva María Rubio seeks to retrace, through a substantial corpus of works from major international institutions, the creative evolution of the artist through all the forms of communication used to shape what he meant by ’new art’, collective and revolutionary: paintings, photographs, photomontages, type designs, book and magazine illustrations and architectural projects.

DU LAC ET DU PARC GRAND RESORT

The exhibition aims to focus on some key issues to understand the figure of Mario Radice. Among these, the most important are the relationship between art and architecture in the Thirties, Rationalism, and its historical crisis. The exhibition also presents for the first time the study of works by Mario Radice (sketches, notes, drawings and photographs) recently acquired by the Archive of the twentieth century, compared to the works of the Mart collection and borrowed items. Particular attention will be given to the reading of these works, often preparatory studies, as part of the Italian abstractionism developed around the Galleria del Milione.

The landscape as a pictorial genre has now become, with modernity, the very form of many artistic and architectural interventions, up to the present crisis in which the relationship between man and landscape seems increasingly to be mediated by what is fake, virtual and technological. The exhibition will involve more than sixty artists from around the world, with a special focus on Latin America and East Asia, portraying various elements of the global landscape through multimedia, especially photography and video, and site-specific interventions in Trentino entrusted to leading international artists.

56

A global catastrophe, representation of the masses, trauma of modernity: the First World War, which began on 28 July, 1914 and ended 11 November, 1918, introduced a historical discontinuity that directly marked the European identity forever. The exhibition at Mart will present an interdisciplinary vision of the war, reflecting on what it has been in the past and what it means today from different points of view: historical, archaeological, artistic and contemporary. Several symbolic exhibits will be used to unravel a story about war. There will be a presentation of works of art, documentaries and cinema, press and magazines of the period, posters and postcards, photography (official and amateur), documents and writings. The contemporary vision of selected artists will illuminate and characterize the exhibition.

Depero Futurist Art House TAVOLARA AND DEPERO THE MANUFACTURE OF ART HOUSES MARCH - AUGUST 2014

SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2014

Curated by Nicoletta Boschiero

Curated by Nicoletta Boschiero

The Sardinian artist Eugenio Tavolara (1901-1963) has curious ties with Depero: in 1925, at the International Exhibition in Paris he presents mechanical figures and wooden puppets which win a gold medal and extensive critical acclaim. His production of toys and materials depicting the revival of crafts and folklore once again underscore the affinity with Depero. Tavolara’s idea was to represent the folk history of Sardinia in miniature: shepherds, farmers, animals.

The term “war rug” refers to a particular type of Afghan rug, made from the end of the Seventies through the Eighties of the twentieth century: there are traces of considerable production between 1979 and 1988 during the period of Soviet intervention. The American military intervention gave a new impetus to this production. These carpets have military patterns: helicopters and Kalashnikovs replace the traditional decor of carpets for propaganda purposes, encouraging young people to take up arms against the invaders.

There certainly was no lack of festive moments Some events during last season... ...such as the party organized by Paulaner for the F.C. Bayern MĂźnchen team, at the retreat held last July by this Bavarian team in Garda Trentino. For the occasion, the lobby of the Grand Resort was transformed into a typical German pub. The 2013 season was also filled with important events for congresses and meetings, such as the annual meeting of Industrial leaders of 62

Trentino, the National Congress of the Accademia Italiana di Conservativa, the summer school of the Engineering department of the University of Trento, as well as many automotive events: the Scuderia Trentina Storica and the Musical Watch Veteran Car Club, with classic cars and their drivers dressed in original outfits from the early 1900’s.

There were also the traditional events dedicated to the guests of Du Lac et Du Parc: among them, the Grand Buffet of Midsummer, the coolest foodie party of the season!

Cinema at Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort It’s definitely a pleasant and unexpected gift for the end of the year. The trailer of the movie “Colpi di fortuna”, filmed in recent weeks in various locations of the Garda Trentino, Trento and Rovereto, offers some intriguing shots of the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort in Riva del Garda. In particular, some scenes show the impressive park of about two dozen acres in all its beauty, located between this accommodation structure of Riva del Garda and the lake. The stars of the new film, directed by Neri Parenti and produced by FilmAuro in collaboration with Trentino Turismo e Promozione and Trentino Film Commission, are Christian De Sica, Pasquale “Lillo” Petrolo and Claudio “Greg” Gregori -

already stars of “Colpi di Fulmine”, shot in Trentino in 2012 - as well as Francesco Mandelli and the duo Luca Bizzarri and Paolo Kessisoglu. An exceptional cast that enjoyed the hospitality of Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort during the shooting of the film in various locations of the Garda Trentino area. The presence at the Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort of the “Colpi di fortuna” cast has ended the season of 2013, characterized by many great stays. Another memorable event was when on the occasion of this year’s Centenary Alpine Tour, 47 historic Silver Ghost Rolls-Royce cars re-enacted the automotive raid previously ran by three identical models of the English factory exactly one hundred years ago in the Alps.
