The existing situation shows a masterplan in which there is no clear differentiation between the areas and not enough spaces related to production. Our masterplan proposal focusses on differentiation: the east side, thematically oriented on FARMING, is highly rational, with also a vegetable garden related to our building, while the west side, whose theme is MEETING, is more organic and dedicated to education and temporary events. LIVING becomes an important matter in
MEETING
MEETING is the theme dedicated to the western area and of course the most public. One of the aim of the project is in facts to convert the Cascina in a more lively and open area, making it an attraction point for the neighbourhood and the cities around it. This side of the masterplan is supposed to be organic and less rational, because it has to relate to people in a more natural way. The pallet vegetable garden is what creates the transition between the LIVING area, the main focus of our project, and the meeting areas of this west side of the masterplan. This theme contains the clasroom and educational cultivations, the football field, the main entrance and the landmark that welcomes the visitors.
our project as well, since the old building had to be transformed in a space for a family of four people, and, at the same time, had to be available for big groups of visitors. Within the design of the master plan, we provided a natural buffer against the noises of the highway (with orchards and greenhouses), checked that the irrigation systems could efficently reach every part of the project, gave a solution to the problem of parking, moving it north of the drier. This decision allowed us to focus on places for waiting, meeting and eating in the open-air, that better fit the proximity with the main entrance.
LIVING
The core of the Cascina are the people living it every day and caring about its past and future. Infact designing the required residential conversion of the barn, we are also creating proper outside spaces that are strongly linked to both the existing and the new housing. In the interiors the ground floor of the barn is mainly a huge open space, divided by two light divisions: one is provided by the staircase made by a bookcase, the second is a folding partition that allows to divide the kitchen from the living room, having the possibility to share the space, but providing privacy to the tenants. The first floor focusses the living and studying areas in the middle of the plan, taking advantage of the two central openings, while the bedrooms are symmetrically placed at the south and north sides.
FARMING
While living is something highly intrinsic in the contemporary Cascina, what is often missing is the relationship with the traditional habits of FARMING. These kinds of activities require huge areas, that should be rational and easy to cultivate. We placed these spaces on the east side of the masterplan that is now empty, but also easy to reach for the agricultural machinery. These areas can help separating the highway from the Cascina, according to a disposition of the cultivations that goes from the highest ones to the lowest, following the east-west axis in order to hide the infrastructure and preserve the visibility of the historical buildings.
