BUSTER Turns 10 - Come And Join Us! BUSTER turns 10 - come and join us! Buster can, what others can’t for he’s learnt to amaze. One day he’ll be a mighty man whom all the world will praise! Oh, Buster...

The count-down has started: 10-9-8... BUSTER will soon amaze us again, and it’s not too long before the film world will open its magical doors to film fans young and old, and let them in to see the 169 fantastic films in this year’s programme. We have 11 days packed with film and media events. On 9th September, we’ll roll out the red carpet at Imperial Cinema, and celebrate BUSTER’s 10-year birthday party with songs and joy, followed by an exclusive preview screening of the 3D animation ‘Sammy’s Adventure: The Secret Passage’. The festival’s programme is filled with many exciting surprises this year. BUSTER will show films from all five continents, both short and long, mainstream and art-house, serious and entertaining. There is a huge diversity of good stories on offer, which we are proud to have obtained from all over the world. There are imaginative shorts for the youngest children at Børnebiffen, which are assembled in such a way that the contents and the length suit the needs of 3- to 6-year-olds. There are children’s films for 6- to 13-year-olds and youth films for audiences aged 14 and above. The entire programme is filled with fantastic pieces that manage to talk to children and youth on their own terms, so that they can see themselves in the films and grow with them. The film series BUSTER for Real, which focuses on ‘Cool Girls on Film’, is our contribution to the equal rights debate. Our film programme is addressed to all children and youth starting at 3 years old, as well as their school teachers, parents, older siblings, grandparents and kindergarten teachers. Everyone is sure to find a film that meets their taste. This year, we have created a new and experimental media playground: BUSTER’s Media-Lab, and nobody should miss out on it! During the week, we invite school classes to play with various media: BUSTER’s Media-Lab offers challenging workshops, an exciting treasure hunt, a demonstration of new educational computer games and fun entertainment presented by skilled instructors and fantastic hosts, many who are known from national TV. During the weekend, families with children can enjoy the media playground for themselves. The entire project will take place at Pressen in Politiken’s House on Copenhagen’s town hall square, Rådhuspladsen, and costs only 15 kr. per person to attend, just like our cinema tickets. BUSTER Gives it a Go is the series where you can watch an inspiring film and subsequently face a challenge in a workshop. This year, the topic is ‘Sport & Health’, but with BUSTER’s special take on the subject. Professional instructors will guide the audiences through workshops in kung fu, laughter, climbing, boxing and cooking.

BUSTER is on the road again and will be visiting cinemas all around Denmark including screens in Ishøj, Tisvildeleje, Holte, Humlebæk, Middelfart and Fredericia, and also making a trip to show films to the people of Nuuk in Greenland. Denmark’s largest film competition for youth and young filmmakers, OREGON, has grown even bigger this year and boasts 50 films from 50 new film-making talents. The best productions of this year’s entry will be announced in Copenhagen at the end of three days of inspirational workshops, film screenings and presentations with respected filmmakers. BUSTER’s educational DVD 2 will make sure that the films will reach all the way out to Denmark’s classrooms and become a part of the syllabus. BUSTER has acquired the rights and prepared teaching materials for 10 shorts and documentaries from last year’s short film programme, and will distribute the DVDs for free to all schools in Denmark. These five projects have come about thanks to the support of the Nordea Fund, which is supporting us again now in 2010. As a consequence of the great success we’ve had with our weekend events, we have two weekends this year packed with film events for families. The programme will offer screenings in the city’s cinemas as well as release events, where you among other things can meet Curious George and Carsten & Gitte. At FILM-X you can produce your own films, and the Royal Danish Theatre invites you to an experimental performance of ‘Benny’s Bathtub’. There will also be special film events in collaboration with Denmark’s Aquarium, the National Museum and ARKEN. Finally, BUSTER’s Media-Lab will be open from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs during both weekends. We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, contributors, helpful volunteers, interns and everyone else who has made this year’s festival possible. Our great thanks also go to all the participating cinemas - without their support, there would be no BUSTER. And last but not least, BUSTER is proud that HRH Crown Princess Mary is once again supporting us by being the festival’s patroness. We are look forward to showing off what BUSTER is capable of... Füsun Eriksen Festival Director

CHILDREN’S JURY

Ida Holm Sørensen

Frederik Ørtoft Andersen

Asta Mostgaard Larsen

My name is Ida Holm Sørensen, and I am 13 years old. I attend Søndergård school in Bagsværd, and during my spare time I play handball for AB. I have played handball for the past six years and I love it, but apart from that I also like spending time with my friends. I love to watch films, especially fantasy films. I really love films where they build an entire universe, like in ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’. But I’m also a great fan of comedies. Good and funny American comedies are just the thing for me. My favourite series are ‘Friends’ and ‘Gossip Girl’, and my favourite actress is Jennifer Aniston.

My name is Frederik, I’m 12 years old and I attend 6th grade at school. During my spare time I like to box, and I’ve just stopped playing football, which I used to play since I was 5 years old. I love films where there is a bit of action and not all that romantic stuff. Something has to happen, otherwise it gets boring. The films I especially like are ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘James Bond’ (the latest one) etc.

My name is Asta. I’m 12 years old and my birthday is on 5th August. In my spare time, I play handball, but I naturally also like spending time with my friends. I have played handball for 6 years and still love the sport. I like watching films and love going to the cinema with my family and friends.

Morten Voss Hansen

Kira Mielow

Sascha Liri Fabricius Ravat

Hi, my name is Morten. I am 13 years old and attend Det Kongelige Vajsenhus. In my spare time I’m usually together with my friends, but I also play football a lot. Otherwise, I just go for walks and relax with my dog. I love lots of different films, but above all ‘Avatar’. There are many good genres, but my favourite ones are probably action, thriller and comedy.

My name is Kira Mielow. I am 13 years old and am due to attend 8th grade at Det Kongelige Vajsenhus. I love watching films, above all romances, dramas and comedies. My favourite film is ‘Titanic’, and that’s both because it’s exciting and realistic as well as really romantic.

My name is Sascha. I am 14 years old and attend 7th grade at Det Kongelige Vajsenhus. In my spare time I sing a lot and I love music. My tastes are very wide ranging when it comes to film and I like almost everything apart from splatter etc. I really like ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Lord of the Rings’ and films like that. I cry at almost every film I see!

OFFICIAL PROGRAMME: CHILDREN

Eep!

Ellen Smit. 6 years + ‘Eep!’ is an adventurous children’s film about the girl-bird Viegeltje, who is half bird, half human. Viegeltje resembles a girl, but she has wings instead of arms. As a baby, she was discovered by an elderly couple who were interested in birds, and they decide to keep her and raise her like an ordinary girl. But Viegeltje is anything but an ordinary girl. When the other birds head south, she feels like joining them. But her human parents can’t do without her. They are worried that she might not be able to survive and they therefore follow her. The result is an adventurous journey for all involved, as they meet plenty of helpful people and experience things that lead to a deeper understanding of life.

Friends Forever

Tony Loeser, Jesper Møller. 6 years + The mouse Johnny Mauser is harbouring great ambitions to become an actor and nurturing a huge ego to match. Unfortunately, the city’s theatre directors don’t seem to recognise what he thinks are his obvious talents, so he starts looking for new theatres to work at. Of all places, he finds his dream venue out in the countryside - far off-Broadway. The animals on the sleepy farm of Mullewapp are a grateful audience, as Mauser explains to them how famous he is. Mauser plays the heroes with ceremonious pomp, and the slightly naive farm animals begin to believe that he actually IS a hero. Mauser is not in too much of a hurry to clear up that little misunderstanding, which backfires big time when the lamb Cloud is abducted by a big, bad wolf and everyone expects the ‘hero’ Mauser to spring into action.

Ploddy the Police Car Makes a Splash Rasmus A. Sivertsen. 6 years +

Ploddy is a small, happy, black-and-white police car with big, round, friendly eyes. He is shaped like a Volkswagen Beetle just like his American cousin Herbie, but he talks melodic Norwegian. And he’s on his toes as he tries to capture the Badger Brothers, who are planning to steal the pure drinking water in cosy Bodø. The two villains have built a secret water-tapping system inside a mountain. There is plenty of Norwegian nature and mountain vistas in ‘Ploddy the Police Car Makes a Splash’, and the entire spectacular universe is computer-animated. Ploddy’s best friend is a beaver, and he is as funny as Ploddy is fast, with his screeching tires and blue emergency light on his roof. Bob the Builder and Postman Pat have not lived in vain.

Here Comes Lola Franziska Buch. 6 years +

9-year-old Lola is a happy girl. Her Brazilian father sings and dances and tries to start a new restaurant with her grandfather. Lola’s family is a little bit crazy. Her mother’s name is Viktualia, and Lola’s aunt is only two years old. When Lola goes to sleep, she turns into the pop star Jacky Jones, who sings like a dream and is celebrated by everyone. But if there’s one thing she wishes for even more than being a pop star, it’s having a best friend. In her new school, she meets Flo, but Flo doesn’t behave like the other girls, and she also smells of fish. When Flo’s mother is hired in Lola’s father’s restaurant, the two girls are forced to spend their time together. ‘Here Comes Lola’ is a sweet and entertaining film about friendship and about not letting oneself be governed by ones prejudices. The film won the first prize at the children’s film festival in Giffoni.

A Town Called Panic

Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar. 7 years + “Horse! Horse!”, Cowboy shouts with an American accent and a piercing falsetto. Horse is taking piano lessons with his chosen one, and Indian is planning a surprise party to celebrate Horse’s birthday. The Belgian cult television series ‘A Town Called Panic’ has found its way to the big screen, and the result is as brilliant and hysterically funny as the original series. Things start going wrong when Cowboy and Indian order Horse’s birthday present via a fancy online bricks company. But a cup of coffee is accidentally placed on the keyboard, the 50 bricks that their friend should have received turn into 50 million bricks, and panic truly comes to town. It’s not without reason that the most frequently uttered line of the film is “Oh no!”. Thanks to the directors’ unrivalled ability to combine childish innocence with grotesque absurdity, we can confidently guarantee that you’ll never have seen anything quite like it.

One day, at the supermarket, he meets a Peruvian family, and from then on he becomes highly interested in his biological origins and his people’s rituals. He decides to live like an Indian and is looking forward to the trip to Peru which his father has promised to take him on. But when he overhears his parents being happy about his mother expecting a child, Koos is heartbroken. Will they love him as much as they will love their real child? Kenny Begins

Mads Lindberg, Carl Åstrand. 7 years + You have now come to the crazy corner of BUSTER Film Festival. ‘Kenny Begins’ is a wonderfully mad film, which reminds us of science fiction parodies such as ‘Galaxy Quest’ and ‘Spaceballs’. If you don’t get the references, don’t despair, but be prepared to meet star warriors in the classroom and crazy ideas by the dozen. Connoisseur parents might remember that ‘Kenny Begins’ was originally a TV series on Swedish television, but todays teenagers will appreciate the story anew. But everyone is guaranteed to have fun, so long as you have taste for pop culture in general and Star Wars in particular - and it helps if the two are spiced up with a bit of solid self-deprecating humour. Pernilla August and the singer Eva Duhlgren appear in two small but delightful roles as headmaster and waitress respectively.

Little Nicholas Laurent Tirard. 7 years +

The Asterix and Lucky Luke author René Goscinny’s stories about Nicholas, who together with his friends gives rise to chaos and generally makes life difficult for the grownups, are beautifully adapted in ‘Little Nicholas’. Nick fears that his mother is pregnant and that his privilege of being the sole recipient of parental love is therefore under threat. In response to the forthcoming dethronement he mobilises his friends, and one cunning plan after the other is put into effect in order to avoid the terrible destiny of having a younger brother or sister. The film is the French counterpart to the old ‘Father of Four’ films - a warm-hearted, slightly nostalgic tale about the times when energetic little boys walked around in shirts, knickerbockers and with brylcreem in their hair, and were up to no good as soon as their parents looked the other way.

Free Birds

Gustavo Giannini. 7 years + When the canary Feifi escapes from a top-secret underground facility, the media magnate Mr. Puertas tries everything to get her back. Feifi has never been free before and doesn’t know how to behave amongst ordinary birds. She tries her absolute best to blend in, so that she can hide from Mr. Puertas. Before long she has made some new friends: the bat Clarita, the pigeon Libia and the sparrow Juan, who feels so drab that he ends up walking around with painted feathers. This motley little crew ends up on a wild and dangerous adventure, where they not only have to escape from Mr. Puertas, but also from a clumsy cat. ‘Free Birds’ is an exciting Argentinian computer animation about friendship and about daring to stand up for oneself.

Rafiki

Christian Lo. 7 years + Mette, Julie and Naisha live in a small, peaceful valley in Norway. Out there, where there is snow all year round, and where the worst thing that can happen is an overturned toboggan or a couple of bruises picked up during a long and fun toboggan run. Mette and Julie get desperate, however, when their friend Naisha disappears just before Christmas. They follow her trail to the big city. Naisha is the daughter of asylum-seekers, and she risks being sent home. ‘Rafiki’ takes place in the space where political correctness starts dissolving and where good child actors and real warm-heartedness take over. Mette, Julie and Naisha are “best friends for ever”, as they say themselves, and they prove this in a politically chilly and slightly rightleaning world. Christian Lo is a first-time director, and he shows he is a good one too.

One day, she finds out that her parents are going to get divorced, and that she will move with her mother to Japan. Yuki’s world falls apart, and together with her best friend Nina, she starts to hatch sinister plans in order to bring her parents together again. When her plans look like they’re going to fail, and the thought of separation seems too unpleasant, the two girls consider running away as the only option left. They flee to the forests outside Paris, which are filled with mystery and eeriness, but which also somehow help Yuki find the clarification she needs because something pretty fantastic happens when you get lost. ‘Yuki & Nina’ is a moving and poetic film about divorce and friendship told from a child’s perspective.

She has promised the girls that she will return as soon as they have filled their piggy bank. They deeply miss their mother, and things don’t improve when they are forced to do cleaning-duties by their strict aunt. From time to time, the aunt gives them some loose change in return for their work, and they immediately put it in the piggy bank, but at this rate, the mother’s return seems like a rather long-term prospect. But the two girls discover that they can earn some extra money by catching grasshoppers, grilling them and selling them as snacks. And when the youngest of them discovers that one can exchange a large coin for many small ones, they soon start filling the piggy bank at high speed. ‘Treeless Mountain’ is a poetic and soulful film about loss and sibling solidarity.

Alamar

Pedro Gonzáles-Rubio. 8 years + We heartily recommend the scenic and sensual ‘Alamar’. The young boy Natan is the planned child of an Italian woman and a man with Mayan roots. The two have separated, however, and from the moment Natan is sent from his mother’s home in Rome on a long journey to live with his father Jorge, his young life changes completely. Jorge lives completely cut off from civilisation, surrounded only by the sea and the sky, in a tree house on columns, where their only friends are the birds. Here, Jorge lives the simple life, enjoying the fruits of nature and the sea, and the audience is placed in the small shoes of Natan, be it on-board a rocking boat with wind blowing through his hair and water under his feet, or with a sense of pure astonishment with the life that can be found under the surface of the sea. ‘Alamar’ is a beautiful adventure in the borderland between documentary and fiction.

Jermal

Ravi L. Bharwani, Rayya Makarim. 8 years + When the mother of 12-year-old Jaya dies, he is sent to live with his father, who works as a supervisor on a Malaysian fishing platform, a so-called Jermal. Johan at first doesn’t want to acknowledge his son’s presence, and Jaya has to learn to stand on his own two feet in the harsh and isolated environment on the platform. He is bullied and ridiculed by the other boys, who give him the nickname professor, because he knows how to read - but he slowly learns how to survive and rises up the ranks. It turns out that a dark shadow hanging over the past is the reason for Jaya’s father not acknowledging him. A few old letters from Jaya’s mother make him change his mind, however, and at the end of the film, Jaya and Johan are no longer strangers, but father and son. ‘Jermal’ is a fine tale about searching for ones origins, and about forgiveness and reconciliation.

The Crocodiles Christian Ditter. 8 years +

‘The Crocodiles’ is a best-selling German book from 1977, written by Max von der Grün, but the dust has been blown off its covers and the result is a film that all perky boys and girls can look forward to in 2010. Children who like the Danish films ‘Catch That Girl’ and ‘Miracle’ will not be disappointed when they join these young live wires on a trip to a suburb of Dortmund. The film begins with a lively action scene on the roof of an old house, where the new kid Hannes has to pass a manhood test in order to be accepted in the gang of ‘The Crocodiles’. The passes the test, but it is only by a hair’s breadth and with his fingers grasping the gutters that he avoids turning into ketchup on the sidewalk. From then on, the trip slaloms between fearful parents and large teenage thugs on tuned motorcycles.

Fish Tank

Andrea Arnold. 13 years + “The description of a few decisive weeks in a young girl’s life is so intense, that one feels like one’s heart is pumping in one’s neck and one’s life is lying in ones hands. There is plenty of teenage blues in ‘Fish Tank’, but it is still uplifting - like all good art.” This is how the film critic Kim Skotte described the film, when he reported from Cannes, where Andrea Arnold repeated the accomplishment of her debut film ‘Red Road’ and walked away with the Jury Prize. Fish Tank’s protagonist is called Mia (brilliantly played by the amateur Katie Jarvis) and she is constantly at odds with the world. She is thrown out of school, and her friends exclude her from their group, but one warm summer day, her mother (Kierston Wareing) comes home with a mysterious stranger (Michael Fassbender), who promises to change everything and fill their lives with love.

Princess Mononoke Hayao Miyazaki. 11 years +

Hayao Miyazaki’s absolute breakthrough film takes place in the Muromachi period in Japan. The warrior Ashitaka has been bitten and infected by an enormous beast and has to travel east to find a cure. Here, he lands in the middle of a devastating conflict between a small mining village and the surrounding forest, which has a life of its own, and which fights against the human beings tooth and nail to prevent them from invading and destroying nature. The forest’s champion is Princess Mononoke, a girl who was raised by wolves and who is more animal than human. Nature is permeated by tree spirits and animal deities, and the adventure - like always with Miyazaki - has a clear, ecological edge without resorting to finger-wagging. Add to this the most fantastic creatures and figures as well as the director’s usual signature style, and you have the recipe for a world-class animation.

Lymelife

Derick Martini. 12 years + Life as a young boy in a small, cosy suburban house can be lovely. It can also be hard and stressful. The atmosphere depends on how the parents are feeling. In ‘Lymelife’, they aren’t feeling too happy. They are having extra-marital affairs, and are at the mercy of their emotions. It’s seldom one sees an American film, where the best forces of Hollywood come together to make a film with children and youth at its core, but this is what Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton and Cynthia Nixon (‘Sex and the City’) do here. Two of the Culkin brothers (Rory and Kieran) play the lead roles as the two boys, who are suffering and hoping. They are the younger brothers of Macaulay Culkin, who was ‘Home Alone’ in 1990. Lyme disease is what you get when you’re bitten by a tick. But the film only deals with this in a figurative manner.

Cosmonaut

Susanna Nicchiarelli. 13 years + The space race is in full swing, and the battle lines have been drawn between the USA and the USSR. Luciana is a 15-year-old Italian girl with a burning passion for communism and women’s liberation, which gives rise to quite a few conflicts with the people she is surrounded by. But her opinions are there to stay. On the other hand, she is finding it harder to come to terms with life’s emotional aspects. She falls in love with the gorgeous guy from the communist club, but ends up kissing the fat and somewhat clumsy boy and becomes his girlfriend. Her brother is a nerd, who is obsessed with outer space. He has problems with social integration and therefore requires extra care. His parents aren’t exactly overwhelming with attention, so Lucia has to step in. Gentlemen Broncos Jared Hess. 13 years +

In 2004, the director and screenwriter Jared Hess was behind one of the year’s greatest comedy hits with ‘Napoleon Dynamite’, a crazy low-budget film, which surprisingly found its way to a large audience. With ‘Gentlemen Broncos’, Hess once again demonstrates top form. The film is about the teenager Benjamin, whose illusions come undone when he discovers that his great hero, the sci-fi fantasy author Chevalier has brashly plagiarised a story that Benjamin wrote for a seminar, which Chevalier held for budding writers. And things don’t get any better, when a self-taught film director makes a disastrous adaptation. Hess has a penchant for all things kitsch, alternative and unmodern, but the characters and their unfortunate behaviour are never over-exploited. The film is not a freak parade, where one can point at people. It is a tribute - and a brilliantly funny one at that.

GENTLEMEN BRONCOS USA 2009, 90 min. English Version Director: Jared Hess / Production: Rip Cord Production / Producer: John J. Kelly / Script: Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess / Camera: Munn Powell / Cast: Michael Angarano, John Baker, Robin Ballard. Distr.: Fox Film

The Round-Up Roselyn Brosh. 13 years +

‘The Round-Up’ is the most captivating and moving account of the Holocaust since ‘Schindler’s List’. Joseph is 11 years old and on his way home from school with a yellow star sewn onto his clothes. Every day, he is both sneered at and helped by the people in the town. Caught between kindness and hostility, he and his family have learned to get by in the German-occupied Montmartre neighbourhood in Paris, and in spite of the troubles, they are leading a comparatively safe life. At least that’s what they think, until the morning of the 16th of July 1942, when their fragile existence starts falling apart. From the Vélodome D’Hiver, where 13,000 Jews are packed together in a huge arena, to the camp in Beaune-La-Rolande and from Vichy to the terraces of Berghof, the film follows the victims and the executioners of one of the 2nd World War’s most shameful chapters.

The Be All and End All Bruce Webb. 13 years +

15-year-old Robbie has just been diagnosed with a serious heart defect and has taken to hospital. The prospects are not good - it is very likely that he’ll die. His parents and his best friend Ziggy are totally devastated by the bad news, but Robbie doesn’t seem to care about anything. But when Ziggy promises that he’d do anything for him, Robbie does come up with one thing he’d like to do before he dies. He’d like to have sex with a girl. Thus, Ziggy is burdened with the thankless task of having to seek out a cute girl who could imagine making such a contribution for an incurable patient. It’s not as easy as he first imagines. ‘The Be All and End All’ is a well-played British comedy drama about the meaning of friendship, about the first time, and about the many surprises - both bitter and sweet - that life has to offer.

The Boat Race

Bernard Bellefroid. 13 years + 15-year-old Alex lives at home alone with his father, Thierry, in a small apartment in Belgium. Thierry is aggressive and violent towards Alex, so everyday life consists of arguments and scuffles between father and son, when the latter isn’t working hard at the local supermarket. Alex’s only highlight is the rowing club, where he is respected and appreciated for his personality and his talent. His goal is to win the Belgian championships, so he trains hard together with his coach Sergi, while his father’s terror and innumerable outbursts of anger put a halt to Alex’s sport several times. In the end, however, Alex manages to break free, and he slowly learns, with the help of Sergi and the perseverance of his girlfriend Muriel, to trust other people again. ‘The Boat Race’ is a moving and intense film about believing in oneself and in ones dreams.

Sebbe

Babak Najafi. 13 years + 15-year-old Sebastian lives together with his young mother Eva in a social housing complex in a suburb of the Swedish city of Gothenburg. He is a loner who gets bullied in school by the other classmates, ignored by the teachers, and at times terrorised psychologically and physically by his mother, who is having a hard time after the death of his father and is struggling with her unemployment and alcoholism. The only time Sebastian finds peace is when he can repair broken and discarded items. But his hobby is just not enough to give Sebastian’s life a meaning, but becomes more a form of escape, and one day things go horribly wrong when Sebastian is accused of stealing. ‘Sebbe’ is a beautiful, but painful, account of how wrong things can go, if all one experiences is feeling let down, defeated, stigmatised and excluded. The film won the Best First Feature Film award in Berlin.

Sweet Evil

Oliver Coussemacq. 13 years + Céline is hiding in the outhouse of a judge and his wife, and she is only discovered after a few weeks. She has run away from her foster parents after her mother has ended up in prison. But it turns out that it’s not by accident that she has chosen the house of exactly this judge. Things get exciting when the family hesitates to get in touch with the social authorities and actually becomes surprisingly friendly with the lost teenager. Céline quietly and subtly makes herself indispensable, and this becomes a challenge for both the judge and his wife. The film’s title hints at a horror movie, and in a way, this is what we get, but the horror takes place entirely on a psychological level - not in a traditional way with monsters in the woods and such like. The beast can be found within ourselves, and it moves! It comes to life as a power struggle, with life’s small actions as its weapons.

Yahtzee

Katja Eyde Jakobsen. 13 years + The die has been cast in the Norwegian film ‘Yahtzee’, and it doesn’t look as if it’s going to be either a five or a six for 15-year-old Daggi. He has no parents and moves from one orphanage to another. He doesn’t fit in very easily, as he tries to keep the rest of the world at arms length. As the Zippo lighter goes click in his hand something also goes click in his head. In the film’s first scene, he is struggling to get out of a small room that has caught fire, and during the entire film he is struggling to find himself. It is a symbolic scene for ‘Yahtzee’, as Daggi often has to add up the few points he has won, and resort to chance as opposed to scoring two pairs or a full house. This is Katja Eyde Jakobsen’s debut, and she expertly illustrates Daggi’s everyday life with lively hand-held camerawork and a bold pop and rock soundtrack.

Marianne usually destroys all relationships, but together they find a shared dream and set out on a journey, where they each have their own destination. Vikene approaches his characters head-on and thereby manages to feel the pulse of their generation.

Themba

Stefanie Sycholt. 15 years + 11-year-old Themba dreams of becoming a professional football player and of following the footsteps of the local hero, the South African national player Adile Khumalo. But even if he trains hard and his hopes of seeing his dreams come true are big, the reality that Themba wakes up to every morning is not uplifting. The huts in the village are falling apart, there is a shortage of food, and football boots and leather balls are a privilege for the rich. Apart from the harsh circumstances, another dark shadow is looming over his sunny nation: AIDS is violently endemic and a huge taboo. Themba experiences this first-hand when he discovers that his best friend Sipho’s mother has died as a result of the terrible illness, and that Sipho and his siblings have buried their mother in the back yard. A relevant but harsh drama about keeping up hope when one stands face to face with a grim future.

Chatroom

Hideo Nakata. 15 years + Jim, Eva, Emily and Mo meet William online in a chat room, where they chat about each others’ problems. They are seduced by William’s charisma, but William is not the person he pretends to be. Jim is vulnerable, and he has no idea how dangerous his new friendship with William is. Fantasy collides with reality, when William and Jim meet face to face in the middle of rush hour in the metro. Without the protection of the online universe, everything suddenly becomes very serious. ‘Chatroom’ has a highly unique, theatrical, surreal, almost David Lynchean atmosphere, where all the rooms change together with the characters, their alter egos, discussions and actions, in order to demonstrate their intimate internet reality. Hideo Nakata’s psychological thriller is a sophisticated youth film based on Enda Walsh’s play, and was one of the most talked-about films in Cannes this year.

The Basceo area by Manila Bay was originally meant to be a lucrative resort with white beaches and giant luxury hotels, but today it’s the home of ship scrapping and industrial waste, where more than 6000 families are living in search of a fortune. ‘Children Metal Divers’ takes place in this raw and strangely beautiful wasteland and follows a group of boys aged 10 to 12, who dive in search of metal waste in the ships in the harbour. While it keeps coming back to a small story about Bungal, who has disappeared, ‘Children Metal Divers’ follows the children’s daily lives, as they compete in their search for the best bits of metal, are hoodwinked by the scrap merchants and happily risk life and limb to retrieve an anchor. An energetic and unsentimentally captivating film, which leaves us with a unique insight into the lives of these tender young people, who in some way still insist on being childish.

Drive

Telen Rodwell, Bronwyn Purvis. 13 years + It’s not easy to attend the funeral of one’s best friend, especially if one is only a young lad. This is something that many boys in this Australian documentary have had to experience, and they talk honestly about bereavement, guilt, and not least about the urge to feel the adrenaline rush when the accelerator is pressed all the way down while driving. In Australia, car accidents are the cause of most deaths among men between the ages of 18 and 25, and this is what ‘Drive’ focuses on. What is it, that makes the youngsters play Russian roulette with their own mobility and, in the worst case, their own and other people’s lives? Hidden death wishes, the need to simultaneously have and lose control, and the feeling that one is only really alive when one is close to death are some of the explanations given in the film, which manages to get very close to these reckless young men.

Limboland

Jeremy Weller. 14 years + Can one feel at home in Denmark, if one is caught between two cultures? This is the question that the director Jeremy Weller tries to answer in ‘Limboland’. The film takes place in a no-man’s-land between fact and fiction, and makes use of ordinary teenagers in the parts of immigrants who live in Denmark. In improvised scenes, which all take place in a black room, the participants are exploring their different roles in life. What is characteristic for all of them is that they are desperately seeking an identity. But this is not easy, as they constantly encounter resistance from their own families, from society in general, and, not least, from themselves and each other. ‘Limboland’ also questions how far one can go in the name of filmic art: when one of the boys says that he wants to kill his sister if she doesn’t do what she’s told, Jeremy Weller’s assistant director intervenes.

And that’s putting it mildly. At the Israeli university centre, where he studies, the Jews refuse to talk to him because he’s an Arab. And many of the interviewed Jews in the film don’t think that Arabs should be allowed to study there in the first place. The Italian documentary is a captivating look at how young people try to tackle their insecure futures while at the same time being a good introduction to the crisis in the Middle East.

In the beautiful ‘Songs from Ilulissat’, we follow a group of youths, who amongst other ambitions, hope to become teachers, hairdressers, dancers or something within the field of music, and keep their relationship alive to their very special cultural heritage and background. Two young men play the lead roles in this alternative version of Shakespeare’s famous play. In ‘Romeo & Julius’ we are taken backstage, where we learn about the two youth’s worries about how they will be seen in the play by their parents and girlfriends.

The class nerd, 8-year-old Casper, has to tell the class about his father’s boring work at the local council, but he would rather talk about his father’s second job as the superhero Spiderman. Together with two other council employees - Handyman and Scoreman - he is a member of ‘The Fantastic 3’, who fight evil on the streets of Copenhagen. In the amusing ‘Save Our Bacon’, the demands from the slaughterhouse are so large that a pig farmer soon only has one small sow left. He has to resort to drastic measures to multiply his modest stock of animals. A Bruce Lee doll comes to life and embarks on a hazardous adventure in the imaginative, computer-animated ‘The Little Dragon’. Fun and trouble for kung-fu lovers. ‘The Great Ice Race’ is a sweet animation for the youngest audiences. The baby seal Mumu loves to play in the snow, but is still scared of water. But this doesn’t prevent him from having fun with his penguin friends. As the title indicates, ‘Sandra, Fairytale Detective: Bad Wolf’ is a crazy mixture of classical adventure and detective story. The big bad wolf pretends to be a vegetarian, and thus conceals his sinister motives. In a version of ‘Peter and the wolf’, Hubert has exhausted everybody’s trust, as he constantly warns people about non-existent fires. And when there finally is a fire, nobody listens to him.

In ‘Granny O’Grimms’, a bitter old grandmother gives a classic adventure her own personal touch as she tells her grandchild a goodnight story. “Before sunset you have to talk about your disagreements.” This is what 9-year-old Anna’s father preaches, but he and Anna’s mother are getting divorced, and thus these wise words are somewhat harder to live up to than they are to say. A magician is getting ready to perform to his audience, while a small rabbit is escaping from a furious wolf with large teeth in ‘Out of a Forest’. The rabbit seems to have lost all hope, but then something happens that nobody expects. Live action and animation come together in the quirky Turkish short ‘Don’t Go’, where a cat finds a peculiar play-mate. An unusual creature is displayed to an initially frightened, then cheering audience in ‘The Freak’. Its captors provoke it to get a good show, but nobody has asked it if it actually wants to perform. In ‘My Superhero’, a small white lie over the phone to the babysitter allows a young boy to spend an afternoon at home alone without supervision. But when his mother comes home, reality can’t be escaped. In ‘Yes, Virginia’, Virginia and her friends write a letter to the editor of The New York Sun - they want to know if Santa Claus exists. His answer becomes one of the most famous articles in the history of the newspaper. An American girl is meant to be looked after by her Argentinian grandfather in ‘Abuelo’; which means grandfather in Spanish. She is not a big fan of the idea, but she soon discovers that her Spanish-talking grandfather is a bonvivant, who flirts, dances and makes good food. In ‘Jensen Lives here’, the parents of 7-year-old Sofie are getting a divorce and she finally gets the hamster she has always wanted. A vacuuming accident turns out to be a blessing in disguise. In the allegorical tale, only half the population, “the round ones”, have this unusual ability. The other half, “the square ones”, on the other hand, exploit their indulgence. The Chilean youth short ‘Blokes’ is about 14-year-old Luchito’s budding sexuality. With a close camera and an intense soundtrack, sensuality stands center stage, while the youngster peeps at his opposite neighbour or feels other people’s bodies in the bus. NB: the film has explicit images. Possibly this year’s most beautiful short, ‘Next Floor’, follows a bizarre dinner party with an enormous appetite. Gluttony, as we know, is one of the seven deadly sins, and the party guests are slowly eating their way to hell, floor by floor. The Belgian-French black-and-white animation ‘Fossil Memory’ is a bleak, stylish and poetic portrait of a small boy’s relationship to his sick grandfather. The coal dust in the old miner’s lungs conceals the past. The Swedish black-and-white animation ‘Miss Remarkable and Her Career’ is a neurotic odyssey, which revolves around the title character’s troubles with her parents’ unreasonable expectations and an ailing career.

COOL GIRLS ON FILM

Cool Girls On Film ‘BUSTER for Real’ takes a look at topics that are relevant for today’s children and youth. In 2010, the topic is ‘Cool Girls on Film’ - but don’t worry, even boys can learn something! On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Women’s Day, BUSTER will take a look at girl identity and the depiction of girls in recent children’s and youth films from all over the world, by showing a series of films, where the protagonist in some way or another can be described as a ‘cool girl’. An alternative title for Suzi Yoonessi’s colourful and sugar-sweet film about her first great love in life could be ‘Dear Diary’. 13-year-old Vanessa is originally an Inuit, but she is otherwise just as arch an American as her classmates. And she has fallen head over heels in love with Philip, who is one year older and hardly takes any notice of the infatuated teen. Hoping to win the heart of her chosen one, she puts all her clumsy energies into trying to shine academically and subsequently into taking part in the World Eskimo Indian Olympics - both times without any success. But luckily there are other ways to demonstrate your worth. “As refreshing as Astro-pop on a summer’s day” is how the Los Angeles Times described the film in an enthusiastic review after the film’s American premiere, and thanks to its sharp eye for the absurdly comical in life’s first embraces with great emotions, it’s not hard to see why.

Tanner Hall

Francesca Gregorini, Tatiana von Furstenberg. 13 years + ‘Tanner Hall’ is an American youth drama that focuses on the problems and challenges that can be found in the borderland between youth and adulthood. The teenage girls Fernanda, Kate, Lucasta and Victoria are attending the private boarding school Tanner Hall in New England, USA. The traditional school’s strict discipline is the perfect provocation for the school’s more rebellious students. The four girls are close friends, but they also have highly different personalities, and they all struggle with their own set of problems and challenges within the framework of the American boarding school environment. What the four girls share in common, though, is that romantic difficulties and entanglements coupled with various sexual preferences and challenges make up the central part of their everyday lives.

Whip It

Drew Barrymore. 15 years + Bliss Cavendar is not interested in becoming Miss USA and taking part in beauty pageants all over the country, like her mother would like her to. Instead, she’s into Rock’n’Roll and leather boots, so one day, when she sees an advert for rollerskate training in the nearest big city, Austin, she decides to turn up without her parents knowing about it. Here, she meets an entirely new world of cool chicks, “Bloody Holly” and “Smashley Simpson”, with whom she identifies far more than with the local girls from the suburb Bodeen where she lives. She quickly becomes a member of the group and is given her very own alias, “Babe Ruthless”. Drew Barrymore’s directing debut is not just about dresses and looks, but about daring to be oneself. It’s about cool chicks and girl power, and it’s wonderfully refreshing.

Crackie

Sherry White. 15 years + Teenage girl Mitsy lives with her grandmother, a very firm lady, who is used to coping on her own. Mitsy’s mother is an alcoholic and a prostitute, and has left her ages ago. There are not many rosy sides to Mitsy’s life in Newfoundland, and she doesn’t exactly have ambitious dreams about the future. She would like to become a hairdresser and attend the local hairdressing school. At the village grill, she quickly ends up in bad company. Roden Duffy is only looking for one thing, and it is neither affectionate nor caring. Mitsy tries to bury all the betrayal that she has experienced by looking after a small dog she has found. When her mother suddenly turns up, the reactions of Mitsy and her grandmother are totally different. The Canadian youth drama ‘Crackie’ is a devastating, deep and interesting film about betrayal, social inheritance and hope.

The Runaways

Floria Sigismondi. 15 years + There is plenty of attitude and rock chicks in the music video director Floria Sigismondi’s film about the American girl band The Runaways. With their mixture of heavy metal and sterling punk rock, the tough girls broke the sound barrier in the 1970s with a style that was totally their own. Nonetheless, they never managed to cast off the sleazy image that many critics had associated them with. The film centres around the band’s two front figures, Cherrie Currie and Joan Jett, as well as the energetic manager Kim Fowley, who was also responsible for the band’s sleazy reputation. The exciting, and for many people unknown story about the girl band and their struggle to get rid of their glossy image and break out as punk rock girls is Sigismondi’s directing debut.

RETROSPECTIVE: BILLE AUGUST

Retrospective: Bille August On the occasion of BUSTER’s 10-year anniversary, we will look back at some of the very best children’s and youth films. This year, we have decided to focus on Bille August’s four successful films from the 1980s - ‘Pelle the Conqueror’, ‘Zappa’, ‘Twist and Shout’ and, of course, ‘Buster’s World’, which has given our festival its name. More than any other Danish director, August managed to stand out that decade with his empathetic dramas, where the reality of children and youth is approached at eye-level. In the amusing and life-affirming ‘Buster’s World’, the young boy Buster Oregon Mortensen fights against the older boys’ bullying and deals with the demanding job as a grocer’s errand boy with unshakeable optimism, while he impresses a girl named Johanna with his magic tricks. In ‘Zappa’, the stage has moved to a Copenhagen suburb in the 1960s, where three teenagers start meddling with criminality and love during the difficult transition period from childhood to adulthood. In the sequel ‘Twist and Shout’, the protagonist Bjørn is now two years older and still plagued by troubles. He half-heartedly gets engaged to Kirsten, but falls in love with Anna, who soon becomes pregnant. And, finally, the magnificent and deeply moving period drama ‘Pelle the Conqueror’, which became August’s international breakthrough. This Golden Palm and Oscar-winning film, which was based on Martin Andersen Nexø’s novel, is a harsh depiction of the life of farm workers at the turn of the last century. The young boy Pelle and his old father are working hard on a farm on the Danish island Bornholm.

Buster’s World Bille August. 3 years +

BUSTER originally got its name from this film about the quick-witted magician, Buster Oregon Mortensen, and it’s high time that we show the film again. ‘Buster’s World’ is one of the finest examples of Danish magic realism, where children tackle difficult problems with cunning, ingenuity and a belief that everything is possible. At the time, the film won UNICEF’s special children’s film award at the film festival in Berlin, and it has now been canonised as part of the Danish cultural heritage for children. So don’t miss out on this classic.

FILM-X WORKSHOPS

FILM-X Sound Effects BUSTER at FILM-X will this year focus on the craft of the foley artist. When one shoots a film, the microphone is aimed at the people speaking, and therefore it is often necessary to recreate all the natural sounds in the film such as doors that shut, clothes that rustle and chairs that are dragged across the floor. These sounds are created manually by a foley artist. Two coconut halves can be used to create the sound of horses hooves, and crunching potato flour sounds like footsteps in the snow. Come and experiment with lots of props, which range from washing tubs to bicycle pumps, and design the soundscape of your own film. The foley artist Helge Haahr has worked on a number of Danish films and TV series such as ‘Bleeder’, ‘Taxa’, ‘Catch That Girl’ and ‘The Hotel’. He will attend all week as a guest lecturer and will hand out lots of great advice on how you can create the right sound for your film by simple means.

FILM-X for Families During the weekends, FILM-X will be open to families, and you will have carte blanche to do what you want in the open workshop, which FILM-X’s technicians will guide you through. BUSTER WORKSHOPS

Workshop: The Art of Boxing Anders Gustafsson. 10 years +

Everyone, boys as well as girls, are welcome to attend this workshop in boxing, which starts with a screening of the documentary ‘The Fly’, which follows the 14-year-old boxer Julius. At 153cm, Julius is the shortest boy in the class, but this is only an advantage, as he is the Danish youth champion in the lightest flyweight class. We follow Julius in the course of one year, up to the fight when he has to defend his title. The film allows us to take a look at Julius’s passion for the sport, but also at what thoughts he has about his future and about all the other things that play a role in the life of a teenager - like girls for example. The workshop is held by Bispebjerg boxing club, and starts with a review of the history of boxing, which goes as far back as ancient Egypt around 3000 BC. It will of course also be possible to ask questions. The workshop is an introduction to the art of boxing, where you can have a go at shadow boxing (boxing with imaginary opponents), foot positions and other easy exercises. There will not be any physical contact between the students! At the end of the workshop, the coaches from Bispebjerg boxing club will perform a short show. It is recommended you bring along gym shoes and flexible clothes.

In Spanish, human towers are called ‘castells’,’ and they are a traditional part of festival culture in the Catalan region. In the film ‘Swaying Giants’, the two sisters Laia (9) and Maria (7) practice climbing three times a week, because they are dreaming of becoming the crown on the nine storey high human tower at the annual championship in the bullfighting arena in Tarragona, where there are thousands of spectators. In the film, we follow the two girls, as theypractice their climbing techniques and balance in the sea, right up to their great moment at the championships. After the screening, there will be a workshop, run by professional climbing instructors, where you are sure to get an adrenaline rush when you climb up the 350m2 and 12.5m high climbing wall at Bryggens Child and Youth Centre. Climbing is an exciting and challenging sport, which strengthens your balance and motor coordination. The climbing routes are prepared so that everyone can take part. Workshop: Explore Chinese Martial Arts Raman Hui. 10 years +

In the film ‘Secrets of the Furious Five’, sequel to ‘Kung Fu Panda’, Master Shifu has instructed the great panda bear, the dragon fighter Po, to pass on the noble art of kung fu at the kung fu academy, where a bunch of baby rabbits are to be introduced to the great secrets of this martial art: the Furious Five: Mantis, Viper, Crane, Tigress and Monkey! After the screening of the film, you can try out various kung fu tricks yourself! Copenhagen Jingwu Academy will guide you through the workshop, which starts with a light warm up, followed by some of the most fundamental exercises in kung fu. There is a Chinese proverb that says that “One has to stand right before one can walk right, and one has to walk right before one can fight right.” This is why we will start by training how to stand in the basic positions before continuing to practice movements that make your arms and legs more supple, strong and flexible, and prepare the body for kung fu. Everyone can take part, so come and give the centuries old Chinese martial art a go. We recommend you bring along gym shoes and clothes you can move about in. Workshop: The Edible Schoolyard Robert Lee Grant. 10 years +

Yes, it’s possible to eat a schoolyard! At least this is what the students at the Canadian school do in the documentary ‘The Edible Schoolyard’. The school has introduced a food programme, where the students can actively contribute to getting a healthy and varied lunch at school. We follow the enthusiastic students, who look after the entire process from sowing and cultivating the fruits and vegetables to harvesting them and finally preparing them. The students of the 6th grade are given the special task to make ‘slow food’ for the canteen, which will benefit all the school’s students and teachers. After the film, we will sample some late-summer organic vegetables. In fact, some of them have been harvested at Copenhagen’s own school gardens, and they need to be peeled, cut, chopped and fried - just like the children do in the film! We will be sure to get a move on, as we also want to smell, feel and taste the goods. At the same time we also want to keep track of what we’re eating: what are the various greens called, where do they live, and is it possible to eat flowers? The workshop is organised by Københavns Madhus (an organisation dedicated to promoting healthy eating in public institutions), the school food organisation EAT and Copenhagen’s school gardens. For we are not indifferent about what you eat! It would be beneficial if the children are taught domestic science as part of their syllabus, as the film and the workshop are directly linked to the subject.

Tryl The magic wand is your weapon, and you have to cast spells with it in order to beat your opponents in the game Tryl. But watch out - you have to be more cunning than your enemy!

In the magical duelling game Tryl, the magicians conjure up spells and throw them at each other in order to win against their adversaries. The players should look at each other more than at the screen in order to play the game, and they have to ‘read’ the other players next move. Tryl is therefore to a great extent a game about cunning and bluffing!

MASTER CLASS + PANEL DEBATES

Master Class: The Good Children’s Film The Danish Cultural Minister recently compiled a cultural canon, which included a list of Danish children’s films, but there were no indications of which children’s films were the best in the world. It might sound like a party game for functional film nerds, but BUSTER and the Danish association of children and youth film clubs (DaBUF) invites you to join in on drawing up a children’s film canon. The discussion about a good children’s film is highly interesting and always highly worth it. Is there a special way to tell stories to children? Do children’s films have their own narrative structure? What is a good children’s film about? What makes it good? Can grownups also benefit from children’s films? Which criteria should a good children’s film fulfil?

The master class about the good children’s film will take a good look at these questions. A number of experts, including Dorte Høeg Brask (film consultant at the Danish Film Institute, focusing on children and youth), Oliver Ussing (director), Rumle Hammerich (director, screenwriter and producer) and Steffen Kjelds (programme director at BUSTER) have all had their fair share of dealings with children’s celluloid, and they will voice their opinions in an open discussion with the audience present. BUSTER and DaBUF have joined forces to organise this master class about the good children’s film, which is moderated by Ulrich Breuning, a teacher at the Danish Film School and former children’s film consultant.

Panel Debate: Are you in? - Net Security and ‘Netiquette’ Nynne Bjerre Christensen will moderate a panel with 6 experts, as they discuss the opportunities and risks that arise when children and youth are online. Arto, YouTube, online games, mobile phones – children and youth write, film and photograph to their heart’s content. And they like to share it with others in the virtual world, where they make both friends and enemies, and thus encounter both fun and risks. This creates new challenges for parents, teachers and kindergarten staff. How do we ensure that children move about online in an appropriate way? What guidelines should we follow? Who is responsible for teaching children about ‘netiquette’ and net security? Should we be teaching ‘internet

surfing lessons’ at school? And how do we deal with bullying on the internet and via mobile phones? Nynne Bjerre Christensen from the Danish TV debate programme Deadline will moderate the debate about these topics. The panel consists of the researcher and head of the Media Council Birgitte Holm Sørensen, the education spokeswoman of the Danish Social Democrats, Christine Antorini, the coordinator with a special focus on digital bullying at Save the Children Denmark, Jon K. Lange, the public school teacher Gitte Tjellesen, the editor on Arto.dk Dan Poulsen and PhD and Arto expert Malene Charlotte Larsen. Come and take part in the discussion about opportunities and risks, problems and solutions.

PANEL DEBATES

Panel Debate: Computer Games and Digital Media at School Six teachers, media experts and politicians will discuss the use of digital media in the classroom. Bo Green Jensen will moderate the discussion. Computer games, films, TV and social media such as Facebook take up more and more of children and young people’s spare time. But should they also be a part of the syllabus? Does it make sense to make text analyses of ‘Paradise Hotel’ and make students go to computer game exams? In April 2010, the Danish Ministry of Education published a report with common aims for IT and media skills at state schools. The report presents teaching suggestions, which include digital media – but do the schools have the resources to acquire the necessary equipment and to provide the teachers with further training? Are new teachers coming who have the right skills? What didactic opportunities exist and

what pitfalls are contained in the ‘digital pencil case’? The participants of the panel are the educational spokeswoman of the Danish SocialLiberal Party, Marianne Jelved, the computer game producer Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen from Serious Games, the teacher Ella Myhring who is the person behind HYPERLINK “http://www.spilskole.dk/”www. spilskole.dk (an organisation that works with digital media in the classroom), the researcher Thorkild Hanghøj from DPU, the lecturer Thomas Thorning and the IT advisor John Klesner. Come and take part in the debate where we will also prepare the ground for a high-quality discussion and a distinction between different types of games and films: 1) those with the intention to teach, 2) those with a potential to teach and 3) entertainment with no teaching potential.

Panel Debate: Is There a Limit? - Children and youth’s use of computer games This panel debate will focus on the positive and negative aspects of computer games – and on who is responsible when children and youth play games. Line Arlien-Søborg from the Danish Film Institute will moderate the discussion. The time spent by children and youth playing computer games is on the rise. They play in the digital world via computers, smart phones and on consoles such as the PlayStation. The net is constantly accessible, and parents, kindergarten staff and teachers need to respond to this situation. But many people are missing clear answers and guidelines. Can the children themselves set the limits for their use of games? Or should we be setting the limits – and in that case, where do we draw the lines? Media researchers stress the fact that games are a form of playing which can among other things develop strategic and project

management qualities. Psychologists and teachers point towards the fact that games can be addictive. Line Arlien-Søborg from the Danish Film Institute will lead the day’s debate about children and youth’s use of computer games. The panel consists of the game researcher and member of the Media Council Anne Mette Thorhauge, the head of the Danish Game Council Thomas Vigild, the project editor for computer games at the Danish Film Institute, Simon Løvind, the e-sport organiser Rasmus J. Pedersen and the former game-player and journalist Daniel Kirknæs Færk. Come and make your opinion known when we debate questions such as: When do children play too much? What are the consequences of playing several hours every week? Are there games that are better, healthier or more instructive than others? How do we define quality, when we talk about games?

MEDIA LAB: WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHERS

Digital Storytelling - Digital Storylab The workshop starts with an introduction to what digital storytelling is, and how it can be used in the classroom. Digital Storylab’s mission is the promotion and development of digital storytelling as an educational and socially binding activity. The workshop will inspire you to use new media in the classroom.

The workshop gives you the tools to work with and create personal digital stories with your students, where computers and mobile phones are the central media. Digital storytelling is a great way to engage students, who in this way learn skills within IT, multimedia production, narrative technique and communication. At the same time, the technology strengthens the students’ ability to think about and discuss the subjects in a new and different way.

Playful Learning - ABCiTY The workshop starts with a presentation of the background and aim of the new Danish learning game ABCiTY, which is aimed at kindergarten students and children during the introductory period of schooling. ABCiTY is a learning game, where children can strengthen their vocabulary and language abilities through alphabet games. The workshop will also discuss what kind of pedagogic opportunities arise from working with digital interaction in pre-school.

a discussion about the opportunities and challenges of edutainment. You will also get the chance to explore and try out the game yourself. We conclude with a discussion about the specific opportunities to use the game in school or kindergarten. The idea is that you leave the workshop with new inspiration to use the computer game in your work as an educator. Participants will be given three months’ free use of the game ABCiTY.

The workshop will be a combination of presentations and demonstrations of some of the game’s learning modules, as well as

Clay Animation - Animationshuset This workshop gives you some tools, which will allow you to use clay animation in a fun and simple way - primarily within arts classes, but depending on the subject and the story, the clay animation technique can also be used within other subjects. It is only your own fantasy and that of your students that limits the use of the technique.

At the workshop, you will be introduced to how one can work with clay animation, and you will get a chance to dig your fingers in the flexible plasticine yourself and to make your own figures. See how they come to life when you move them around yourself in front of the camera’s lens, and experience how the figures are given depth and character, as we conclude by adding some sound to the film.

Superbog.dk and Plotind.dk - Alinea This workshop is an introduction to two new digital teaching aids for Danish classes - Superbog.dk (grades 1 to 6) and Plotind.dk (currently grade 3). See how Superbog.dk works - an online service which contains 200 easy books to be used in the classroom, at the library or in the pupil’s home. And find out how you can use Plotind.dk to teach using a combination of books, PCs and interactive whiteboards. The workshop includes joint presentations of the two programmes and will give you the chance to try out yourselves how Plotind.dk

can be integrated with software for interactive whiteboards. Many classrooms now have interactive whiteboards, and we will show you how you can get the very most out of the technology. Meet a teacher who has lots of experience, see how she integrates the programmes in the software, and try it out for yourselves. Participants will be given three months’ free access to the programmes Superbog.dk and Plotind.dk.

Computer Games in the Classroom - Spilskole.dk The workshop begins with a presentation which demonstrates the position of computer games in the media landscape and considers them as new tool to be used in Danish schoolrooms. We will show you a number of examples of implemented courses in the subjects Danish, English and History, and we discuss how it fits in with the government’s educational guidelines.

You will have the opportunity to play a computer game in order to take a look at how you can use it in your own classes. Computer games are not just pure entertainment, but are a means that enable new and different ways of teaching, and they can be put to good use in many different subjects. To conclude, we will demonstrate examples of complete virtual workooms, which you can integrate in your own school.

Animated learning - The Animation Workshop The workshop starts off with a presentation of animation and creativity as teaching tools in school at various grades. We will briefly touch on the development projects ‘Animated learning’: animation used to further linguistic and literary skills, ‘Animated Science’: animation used within natural science classes, as well as ‘Teaching with Animation’: the development of creativity and innovation through animation teaching. Subsequently, we will go through the various stages involved in making an animated film: idea, synopsis, storyboard, film language / pictorial

language, backgrounds and figures, simple animation rules, filming and sound. We will show you, how simple the technique can be, and you will get a taster for making an animated film as well as good advice on how you can get going with making an animation with your pupils. The participants will receive a collection of links and other materials that will help them take the next steps within the world of animation, both on their own and together with their pupils.
