BUSTER 2015

BUSTER will take you on an unforgettable journey BUSTER is looking forward to take you on a journey into the movie theatre’s enchanting darkness. We are going to show you a lot of short films, feature films, youth films and documentaries. BUSTER is much more than film. This year we have a series of workshops, lectures and events. And as something new you can even go to a whole lot of concerts with BUSTER! So come and dance! And look forward to learn, reflect, create, share, listen and laugh in the company of thousands of children and adults throughout the 14 days of festivities. Check out our programme both here and on our website, and purchase tickets early, so you can get to participate in as many wonderful experiences as possible with your class, family and friends. The tickets are wildly cheap, so you might have to be fast before they are all sold out. At BUSTER we are really pleased that so many teachers believe in culture. And with our programme for the schools we believe that we give the teachers a unique opportunity to not only believe in culture but choose a cultural experience in high quality, that will be supplemented by teaching resources, debates, readings and lectures. There are films for every taste, class and subject.

At BUSTER we believe that the unforgettable cultural experiences during childhood is one of the key elements in the forming of identity, diversity and community. We would like to thank all of you who – with both will and commitment – support that belief and support BUSTER. We also send a loving thank you to our loyal audience, the teachers and nursery teachers and all adults that prioritise and love BUSTER. And last but not least we send a loving thank you to our generous sponsors, contributors, partners, talented filmmakers, producers, actors, distributors, cinemas, helpful volunteers, interns, our festival family, board, advisory board, friends, our team and all others who care about BUSTER. Without you there is no BUSTER! We hope that all our visitors will have a memorable festival. Bon voyage!

BUSTER 2015

Youth Gala: Me and Earl and The Dying Girl

Come to a youth gala that really focuses on what it means to make films! First we get tips and tricks for film making by Nana Torp, and afterwards we’ll watch the Sundance-winning film ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’. Before the film animator, author and illustrator Nana Torp, who lectures filmmaking at The Danish Film Institute, will give tips on how to get through the moviemaking process. She will base her talk on her book ‘Filmhåndbogen’ which is packed with good ideas for how to write, direct, shoot, do effects and launch your movie! ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ is about Greg, who mostly just hangs out with his friend Earl, who he’s made small film parodies with since they were small. Not much is going on in Greg’s life, until his mother forces him to hang out with the cancer-stricken Rachel. Gradually they become friends, and Greg and Earl decide to make a film for her. A humorous and touching drama about friendship, films and of daring to live life.

Youth Jury

Anna Bennike My name is Anna. I am 17 years old and in my second year at Sankt Annæ Gymnasium. I play oboe and classical music and watch a lot of films, which is my great passion. I also work at a cinema, so films are a part of my daily life. My favorite films are ‘Her’ by Spike Jonze or ‘No Country for Old Men’ by the Coenbrothers.

Caroline Svendsen My name is Caroline Svendsen and I am 15 years old. I am currently living at a boarding school on Funen, but I am from Copenhagen. The past seven years I have attended a singing school. I play music and sing, so music is a great part of my life and very important to me. I love films that inspire and make you think. I am especially interested in short films, as they are often more intense and powerful. I am looking forward to BUSTER!

Julius Lagoutte Larsen My name is Julius Lagoutte Larsen. I am half French and half Danish. I am in my first year at the film school Station Next and I produce TV for my gymnasium. I enjoy films that challenge the audience’s intellect. Films should be innovative and unique. I hope to see some films at BUSTER that do not follow the traditional conventions.

Simone Grunnell My name is Simone Grunnell, I am 16 years old and in my first year at Ballerup Technical College. I think it is very interesting how films can affect others or simply just provide a good laugh in our daily life. I have worked for Stenløse Children’s Film Club for two years and have been part of the youth committee of DaBUF for a year. Last summer I was a part of the youth jury at Giffoni Film Festival.

Frederik von der Hude I am Frederik von der Hude. I am 16 years old; I live in Ølstykke and attend the media program at Ørestad Gymnasium. As long as I can remember I have watched lots of films. It has always fascinated me how the art of film can connect instantaneous with our emotions and touch our darkest spaces. In my spare time I attend Station Next, a film school for young people who are passionate about making films.

Therefore one day when she’s extraordinarily melancholic and depressed, she tries to pull the plug on her own life. Fortunately she fails and she subsequently discovers what a wonderful world we find ourselves in, if you only dare throw yourself into it.

The year is 1967 and the Vietnam War is on everyone’s lips. We’re in Oslo, where four guys dream of starting their own band, just like the idols from Liverpool. This Norwegian youth film will charm everyone and everything with swinging rock tones and newly cut Beatles hair. French ‘Being 14’ is a brutally honest portrait of today’s youth. The film captures the authentic and nuanced feeling of standing on the threshold between childhood and adulthood. We follow the three girlfriends Sarah, Louise and Jade over a year, where friendships are put to the test, love blooms and the strained relationship with parents reach breaking point. French social realism at its best.

Get ready for some Belgian political incorrectness, when Chubby becomes the anti-hero, we’ve all been waiting for! Chubby lives with his mother and sisters. He’s too fat, ginger and a bit awkward. While selling his sister’s underwear for chocolate, Chubby encounters a security guard named Patrick and his fighting dog. For young Chubby, this becomes the start of military discipline, cigarettes and beers.

Breakdance and communism. ‘Dessau Dancers’ goes about telling the story of being young in 1980s East Germany, in an untraditional way. A group of youngsters are inspired by the American hip-hop culture and bring breakdancing behind the Iron Curtain. They organize illegal ‘dance battles’ on every street corner, much to the dismay of the communist regime. This year’s Eastern Block feast of dancing, censorship and freedom of speech.

BUSTER Film Festival was originally named after the resourceful magician Buster Oregon Mortensen, and now it’s time for a dear reunion with the kid from Brønshøj. ‘Buster’s World’ is one of the finest examples of Danish magical realism, where kids tackle difficult problems with cunning, ingenuity and a belief that anything is possible. So don’t miss a fantastic reunion or an enchanting first meeting with this classic.

In the entertaining Danish animated film ‘Disco worms’ we follow the earthworm Bjarne, who is tired of being at the bottom of the food chain. One day Bjarne stumbles upon a disco LP, and suddenly his dream of becoming a disco star is awakened! The fact that he has neither arms nor sense of rhythm isn’t going to stop him. ‘The Disco Worms’ is a musical humour bomb for the whole family.

This scenario is played out in Brede Work’s installation ‘The Machine’, where the pupils themselves play the main characters and even design the robots that come to life on the assembly line. We will work with the animation technique ‘pixilation’, which animates both people and things. The special feature of this technique is that you can do tricks and manipulation, which you can’t make with the ordinary real movie. In the creative process the pupil’s ability to work together will be put to the test, which is also essential when making a film. Pupils must bring their own masks and clothing to make robots out of.
