Welcome to Sommarscen 2014! From June 14 through August 9, the city of Malmö stages a wide range of events at expected and unexpected locations. Always in the open air and always free of charge. With 183 events at 39 sites over the course of 57 days, you are certain to find something you like, whether you’re in the mood for entertainment, fun, or culture.

A street musician is about to sing a song about Parizad, a character in Arabian Nights, but is interrupted by two children who want to join her on stage. Together, they sing and act out the story of Parizad, the girl who is unaware that she actually is a princess. This story comingles Arabian, Swedish and South Slavic languages. Age 6 and up. Fill a basket with goodies and go to the steps at Södertull. With Malmö’s “Venetian” canal as a backdrop, Studio Bel Canto treats listeners to opera for dessert. The featured soloists are sopranos Emilia Falcaru, Teresia Bokor, Lisa Löfqvist and Amanda Larsson and our city’s own Farinelli, Staffan Lindberg. I’M EVERY LESBIAN WITH SOFIA HULTIN

A walking tour narrated by the artist Sofia Hultin, who provides a personal account of Malmö’s lesbian history. About meeting places, manifestations and political movements as well as more private stories about love and relationships. This is part of the exhibit “A voice of one’s own – On Women’s Fight For Suffrage and Human Recognition” at the Malmö Art Museum. This is one of the finals leading up to Swedish Radio’s nationwide music contest. Finalists selected by a highly merited jury perform live. Mexico’s rebel accordionist and legend, Celso Piña, and his band will change your perception of accordion music. Melodies steeped in tradition are fused with beats inspired by hip-hop, ska and reggae – always with a heart of cumbia.


WINSTON MCANUFF & FIXI

Musical love is what you get by pairing the phenomenal multi-instrumentalist Fixi with legendary reggae singer Winston McAnuff, known for his vocals for the Jamaican band Inner Circle. The duo’s debut album was highly acclaimed and now they are in Sweden for the first time together to perform their philosophical Caribbean fusion of calypso, reggae, dub and pop. Sunday June 22

OF MONTREAL

Trying to define or pin down this American phenomenon is virtually impossible. Through the years, their music has touched on genres such as indie pop, electronica and funk, with influences from Bowie and Prince. The time has come for Malmö to regain the Swedish hip-hop throne. Our local radio station Din Gata 100,6 is dedicated to local talent, and here they will showcase the artists they believe have even more potential. ISABELLA LUNDGREN & CARL BAGGE TRIO

The offspring of jazz enthusiasts, Isabella took off for New York at age 18 to study music. Back in Sweden again, she aims to use her unique voice – compared to the likes of Billie Holiday – to open doors and build bridges to the past and the future.


DEBRUIT & ALSARAH

The encounter between French producer and DJ Debruit and the Sudanese singer Alsarah resulted in a contemporary and eclectic take on traditional Sudanese music. KAROL CONKA

Hip-hop artist Karol Conka is a familiar fixture on the local urban Baile funk scene, an important expression for lowincome groups and a means to promote sexual freedom in Brazilian society. She has been compared to M.I.A. when it comes to her high-energy live performances. This is her first appearance in Sweden. Sunday June 29

She’s been called the Queen of Roma music. Vera Bila’s smoky jazz vocals take you on a journey to the way of the Roma. Feivel + Dollar Bill + Alice Boman Once again Sommarscen pays tribute to Malmö’s many-faceted music scene with an evening at Pildammsteatern. Feivel conjures up a dreamy and melancholy pop landscape with airy vocals. Dollar Bill seems destined for a brilliant future in the hiphop arena, and here we’ll get a taste. HADRA CHEFCHAOUNIA

Hadra is a women’s choir that combines poetry, rhythms, choreography and choral music from the village of Chefchaouen in north-western Morocco. Their vocal traditions have been passed on from mother to daughter since the 1600s, and the choir also spreads this tradition to young women in present-day Morocco. Tuesday July 8

When the Baltic Exhibit opened in Malmö in 1914, milestone events were in focus. But what about the minor events? In a special performance piece created for Sommarscen, PotatoPotato gives us their take. The setting is a utopia 100 years ago, today and one hundred years in the future. MAM DANCE COMPANY

MAM is a young dance company based in Eslöv known for their forceful fusion of cutting edge hip-hop and modern dance. A concert monologue about being blonde. About gender, race and sexuality. WATER ON MARS – THE SHOW

A circus show brimming with dynamic airborne images and a bizarre manipulation with everyday objects. SUSANNA

Her hypnotic voice has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s and her musical imagination reaches the same heights. TAMIKREST

From northern Mali in the heart of the Sahara desert comes Tamikrest, its members belong to the nomad Tuareg people. They use their rebellious Ishuma rock to describe the struggles facing Mali and the plight of the women. It’s striking, it’s bluesy, it’s desert rock. Sunday July 13

THE MOSAIC PROJECT WITH TERRY LYNE CARRINGTON

What happens when you play live music to a film clip? Meet an Afghan shepherd who sings a love song, Malmö’s international women’s choir before their big concert, and a Burmese girl whose clear voice competes with the wind. Nils Berg Cinemascope presents an intermedial concert with guests from the four corners of the planet.

TJO VA’ DE VIFTAR!

One hundred years ago, Malmö hosted the Baltic Exhibition. A concert presenting music dating back to 1910 marks this anniversary. Singers Nadin Al khalidi, Anna-Mia Barwe and Miriam Aïda, backed by sixteen musicians, spice up these old treasures from Malmö with modern sounds and rhythms from around the world. For an added treat, town curator Anders Reisnert will provide the historic background of the music. Friday July 18

LINKOBAN

The Danish queen of chilly electro and hot grime has roots in Vietnam and China. But her music evokes Miami and Brixton. She was the talk of last year’s Roskilde festival and made Jenny Wilson’s Nordic Playlist. Linkoban has a broad appeal, but always stakes out her own musical territory. Saturday July 19

Hailed by many as Cesaria Evoria’s successor and rejuvenator of Cape Verdean music. Mayra Andrade’s jazzy pop is influenced by all the countries she’s grown up in.
