This project is the result of 28 days on the road in the company of my friend and artist Eduardo Matos, throughout the many roads of the USA, specially along the Mississippi River, either by car, train or bus, sleeping each night in a different motel and in the following days discovering and exploring the changing light and colours of the American landscape. I want to thank Lesley Wright, for his invitation and for understanding how special this project was to me; to Jane Gilmor for her hospitality and to Faulconer Gallery, in Grinnel, Iowa. A very special thanks to my friend Miguel von Hafe Pérez, who made one of my dreams come true. To José Lemos for his special support and belief in my work. To António Júlio Duarte for his enthusiasm and friendship. Miguel Palma, thanks for the tequila and the wonderful bed in NY. To André Jasinski for developing my films and for the first contact sheets. To Jean Louis Godefroid for the first R.L. Burnside record. To Pedro Cera for his support and the possibility to exhibit this body of work. To Carlos Lobo and Chromma for publishing this book. To my friends and family and specially to Sara, to whom I dedicate this book with love. André Cepeda, 2009

Chromma is an independent publisher founded in 2008 by Carlos Lobo and Helder Luís. Chromma, produces and publishes small, low-run artist books that feature the work of both emerging and established artists. At Chromma, we prefer to work one-on-one with the artists, in order to achieve a publication that reflects both the very essence of the artist’s focus and our publishing principles.
