Accelerate Chicago Accelerate Chicago is a new technology district in Chicago contained in a single megastructure. Startup activity is currently scattered throughout vacancies in the central business district. Heart will be a haven for startups and young tech entrepreneurs, with design focusing on making education, collaboration, and development as efficient as possible. This project was in collaboration with Guillem Roca under Professor ThÊrèse Tierney.

Bugs, Blood, and Buildings Bugs, Blood, and buildings began as a design charrette and introduction to parametric architecture in Therese Tierney’s ‘Megastructures’ studio in Fall 2016. Microscopic images were used to derive form, which were 3d printed in order to rapidly iterate. This work represents an independent study with Professor Tierney the following semester. An ESEM microscope and Grasshopper were used to explore biomorphic form.
50 mm The sample culture above was used with the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) at the Beckman Institute.

Topographical Data Above are topographical surfaces of San Francisco generated by using open-source ‘shape-files’. These are downloadable from several sources online, such as the United States Geological Survey, and come in three different resolutions. These resolution comes from spacing of sample data points measured by arcseconds. The suggested resolution to work with is dependent on the scale of the project. Study above continued on page 45 19

Year: 2100 This project was completed in collaboration with Kevin Zeng under Mario Corea while studying in Barcelona. Corea is an expert on sports complexes and construction in Spain. Avinguda Esport is located in the Barcelona suburb of Mira-Sol behind a mixed-use TOD. The existing Mira-Sol shopping center includes a mix of housing, retail, grocery, school, and library. Behind this center is the given sloped, triangular site.

Urbana Parking Screen Client: City of Urbana. A new pocket-park is taking over the end of what is now a parking lot servicing the Black Dog Barbecue Restaurant across the street. Material was supplied through the ‘Root to Roof’ initiative that locally sources lumber to develop modular units to create a parking screen to define and blur the edge between the existing parking lot and the new pocket-park. This project was designed in collaboration with Lena Reiff, Luz Upegui and Alan Dang.

Eixample, Barcelona This investigation was triggered by the densificaiton of Barcelona’s Eixample neighborhood. In this exercise the headquarters of publishing company Editorial Gustavo Gili was analyzed not only for its structural and architectural quality, but for its unique site. It is located inside an Eixample block. These blocks were originally intended to be green spaces to control density in the neighborhood, but over time these voids have been targets for new development. Designed by Joaquim Gili and Francesc Bassó, members of the R Group, this building was one of the first modernist buildings under the Franco-era.

How the Other Half Designs For as long as I have been a student, I have learned and understood the world through Western spectacles. ‘How the Other Half Designs’ was a trip to East Asia to study urbanization and densificaiton in two Far-East megacities: Seoul and Tokyo. In order to properly understand the cities in context, I also had to study culture, history, and vernacular architecture. These images provide snapshots of my experience in these cities.

Technology These works were produced while working for Muscle Metrics, a Champaign-Urbana based startup developing gym technology. I served as Chief Design Offier where I was in charge of graphic, user, and hardware design. On the right is an exploded axonometric of the modular QuickClip. I helped design the clip and created this drawing to visualize the idea.
