Mission Statement
Our mission is to facilitate, advocate and promote education, support and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.
American Liver Foundation 2010 Annual Report 3
Advancing Hope The American Liver Foundation reached new milestones in 2011 in our pursuit of advancing hope for all those with liver disease. One of the major highlights of the year was FDA approval of two new treatments for hepatitis C. After waiting for nearly a decade, people with hepatitis C now have treatments that will significantly increase their chance for a cure. The American Liver Foundation embraced this information with numerous outreach activities including partnering with Merck Pharmaceuticals on groundbreaking public education campaigns titled Tune In To Hep C and Step Up to the Plate Against Hep C. Both campaigns raised the level of awareness of hepatitis C, encouraged those at risk to be tested and to seek medical attention if needed. The research efforts also continued with funding of early career investigators as they begin their journey of work in biomedical research of liver conditions. Their work ranged looking at hepatitis C to issues surrounding acute liver failure. In the patient services area, nearly 150,000 individuals were reached in education programs, support services and outreach activities. A leading outcome of the American Liver Foundation’s education program was a 96% average increase in knowledge by participants. In total over 7000 individuals were provided support services through HelpLine requests and other mechanism of support. The Programs Department created additional education materials in FY 2011 which included new brochures on Cirrhosis (English and Spanish), HCV/HIV Coinfection (English and Spanish), and Hepatic Encephalopathy (English and Spanish), as well as support guides: An Introduction to Clinical Trials, Financial Assistance Resources, Newly Diagnosed: HBV, Newly Diagnosed: Hepatitis B, Newly Diagnosed: Hepatitis C, Newly Diagnosed: Liver Cancer, and Newly Diagnosed: NonAlcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The American Liver Foundation is proud to be part of the progress in Advancing Hope. 4 American Liver Foundation 2011 Annual Report
