The Affordable Care Act included research provisions that are transforming how research is conducted and what is being studied; these changes will mean new and hopefully more effective treatments for patients. The following describes key provisions from the ACA: •

Creation of the Patient-‐Centered Outcome Research Institute (PCORI) -‐ PCORI is a non-‐profit corporation charged with helping patients, clinicians, purchasers and policymakers make informed health decisions , improving health care delivery and outcomes, and producing and promoting high integrity evidence-‐ based information that comes from research guided by patients, caregivers and the health care community. -‐ It is funded though the newly established Patient Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund. -‐ PCORI has identified national priorities for research which can be found here. -‐ More information on PCORI can be found on its website. Establishment of the Cures Acceleration Network (CAN) at NIH -‐ This program is designed to bridge the gap in the therapeutic development pipeline between basic and clinical research. -‐ CAN is housed at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the NIH. -‐ CAN is authorized to make three types of awards: 1. Large grant awards of up to $15 million per fiscal year; 2. Partnership awards that require 1:3 matching funds; and 3. Flexible research awards using the special funding mechanism called other transactions.

Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation -‐ The Innovation Center charge is threefold: better health care by improving all aspects of patient care, better health by encouraging healthier lifestyles in the entire population, and lower costs through improvement by promoting preventive medicine, improved care coordination and reducing waste and inefficiencies. -‐ The Center is fostering health care transformation by finding new ways to pay for and deliver care. evaluating innovative models of payment and service delivery for Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP. Successful models can be expanded nationally. To date, the Center has established projects in the following areas: Accountable Care Organizations, bundled payments, a comprehensive primary care initiative, the partnership for patients, and Medicaid incentives for the prevention of chronic diseases.
