“I use to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same way I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m Here, and I’m just as strange as you.” Frida Kahlo

Urban Movement Fisrt floor existing Iimages
Concept Statement The goal of this renovation was to bring life and into the Courthouse while being mindful of the people who will be using the spaces. A pipe installation replaces the existing ceiling feature opening up the space, acts as way finding and symbolizes movement. Thresholds over the courtrooms draw attention to the areas of respect and guides users to thier destination. Finishes are kept durable and simple while incorporating urban textures and colors. The final result is a space that honors the court while respecting the people of the city and remembering the history of the building.
City Life Initiative personal concept There are numerous cities in this country but no other one like Detroit. Its richness in art and music is hard to find anywhere else. The 36th District Court, located it in the heart of Detroit will reflect the City History through the City Life Design using music and art as inspiration from local artisans. The city life will bring new vigor and focus into the People’s Court through the use of light, glass and color proving all.

This new renovation will incorporate Universal Principles of Design to fit Edita’s current and future needs. Inspired by the 1950s era, the joy and freedom of the era is represented by then, America’s favorite soft drink, COCA-COLA--the “Sign of Good Taste”. This COCA-COLA theme will be represented through the following: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
New walls will be added as needed by code for water pipes and plumbing New entry/exit door with a window will be provide more natural light into the space New up-to-code fire egress windows—add natural light Installation of radiant heating below the floors add more comfort New lighting design to brighten the space and make it easy for Edita to read her books The existing fireplace will be reframed with a new mantel to give a new, fresh “50s” look Incorporation of Edita’s sausage maker and her recliner will make her feel at home The 34” island height offers the perfect accessible work space, including an undercounter microwave and a countertop-mounted sausage maker Sink and cooktop will be 34” above the finished floor to meet future A.D.A accessibility needs Accessible counter-mounted pot filler adjacent to the cooktop The glass COKE-bottle counter in the island will be the signature piece for the room Waypoint’s flat-panel cabinet door style with a white painted finish will convey the simplicity of the 1950s-style kitchen Black and white tiles were all the rage in the rocking 50’s The project would not be complete without the incorporation of COCA-COLA’s “red” from their logo for appliances A dishwasher drawer is also included for easy access New refrigerator with water dispenser will provide accessible fresh and clean water
The 1950’s kitchen design for Edita Kazlauska also includes top-of-the-line appliances from WOLFSUBZERO, complementing the quality and durability of the WAYPOINT cabinetry. The black and white tiles for the floor and backsplash together with the “red” accents and bottle references will remind Edita of those moments of joy and freedom of her past and the 1950s in which “There’s Nothing Like a COKE”!
