Being part of a well known interior design office during my university years (4th-6th year) helped me understand and put together the theoretical thinking and the practical part of architecture. One of the important tasks was bringing the concept at a greater level of detail, ready to be sent for execution. The most significant moment was seeing the execution coming to a final form and witnessing the moment when the spaces we have created were used.

Architectural Doctoral School @ UAUIM Bucharest 2017-2020 Book nominated at: Anuala
The hidden places of everyday Bucharest are the curious places that are becoming less and less outlined in contemporary Bucharest. Here, the blurry boundary between public and private spaces brings transparency to the layers formed over time, at times visible between places emerging from a dense historical urban coherence, such as buildings and passages. These surprising interstitial spaces are the interior courtyards of Bucharest.
We propose this book as a repertoire of interior courtyards studied with a methodology borrowed from the Italian school of architecture. This research documents the intentions or spontaneities in composing and transforming the urban patterns. We aim to discover the courtyards of Bucharest, classify them typologically and processually, and interpret a historical reading of the city, which we consider a first step in building the contemporary design instances that reflect the formal and spatial reasons and patterns of the city’s old structure.

From the spreading of the first parochial courtyards in the town of Bucur to the slum agglomeration, to new rules of embellishment of the city and new boulevards, the place constituted by the Curtea Domnească and the old church of Sf. Gheorghe is still the center and the initial place of Bucharest.
Nowadays, after many alterations suffered by the old Sf. Gheorghe slum, the passing of time and the lack of care of monuments, the street frontlines are broken, the buildings hidden in the inner courtyards are now exposed to the crowded streets.
This project begins with the design of various courtyards: the round courtyard, the secret squared courtyard, the garden, the workshop yard. The volume creates a sequence of different spaces through passages and alleys.
We first discover the order of the completed streetline, but inside, the courtyards are changing the atmosphere. The best words to used in this project are: layers, textures, surprises.

Living in community
Hand-drawn project | Dămăroaia - Bucharest
This project emerges between drawings and concept. Dămăroaia is a small neighbourhood in Bucharest. On the way towards Dămăroaia, the whole city decreases in height, density, building mass, towards a more natural human scale place. The concept in this project is about the way a garden should be kept, and how can a house be supported by it.
The first step is creating a floating impression by making the garden push-up the building from beneath. The newly created community is a community on top of the garden. Being almost entirely transparent, the groundfloor lets the gaze pass through, towards the lake. This floor is only occupied by little public functions needed in a house: offices, living rooms. The first floor has all the private spaces required, with a more opaque relation to the exterior.

Children theater | Puppet theater
Galata | Istanbul
Project instructor: Kerem Özel| 9th sem.
The Walls of Galata are hidden in an urban image, so they became a story that needs to be rediscovered.
The first dialogue lies between the exterior of the proposed building and the street, inspired by forms, heights, silhouettes, materials. From the street, a new relation is made with the tissue. Little by little we find elements of the story, texture, pages of fairytales that direct us towards Galata. While the exterior creates a relation with the present city, the courtyard makes a connection with past times. Those two dialogues are represented by two buildings side by side treated differently (concrete for the street and another brick texture in the courtyard). If towards the exterior we have all that we need for administration, offices, actors, in the courtyard we find the hidden story: the painting and the puppet workshop, the library, the sweet shop, the interior theater and the puppet theatre, the exterior stage and the garden, all the functions for a children’s building.
Art School
Ortaköy | Istanbul
I imagine Istanbul as a city of layers: wherever you look you can see pages of the great story of Istanbul.
In Ortaköy, we discover the story of Bosphorus, in the first and most importnat layer. Behind the waterfront, we find the first page with Bosphorus houses, then the main road with a background of green areas. Behind all, there is another page with layers of houses, the topography’s silhouette, and in the end, office towers.
In this parallax effect, I choose to hide my building. I choose to respect the topography and to create an extension of the existing urban tissue of the park - Cemil Topuzlu Parki - evoking fragments of The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
This Art Centre shows a beautiful image on the Bosphorus side: people studying, singing, dancing, painting and making sculptures in the extended gardens of the park. The whole building supports the gardens. Inside, there are rooms for individual study, for rehearsals, shows, and even ballrooms for different events.
The entire building tries to complete the surroundings, even through its materials: brick (a natural material) and reflexive glass to mirror the other side of Bosphorus.
Solacoglu Inn
Calea Moșilor | Bucharest
The Solacoglu Inn, among other buildings of the same kind in Bucharest, reminds us of old stories and images of the city. Built in 1859 at the demand of brothers Solacoglu from Istanbul, this inn was a luxurious building where a lot of merchants and foreigners gathered. The initial picture of the inn was not completely kept during the years, so, in search of an overall picture, the interwar images were the most significant. For the restoration we recreated this image by searching the elements of value. Therefore, the exterior reflects this image through: the treatment of the facade in a similar way as the old image, cleaning and improving the existing authentic layers and keeping the existing masonry layer protected with a thin transparent layer. The ornaments and the woodwork in good or medium condition were kept, but the ones in a poorer state were replaced in the same manner but with small differences: color or texture.
Another two key elements are the iron gate, an important part of the image of the inn, and the porch of the courtyard’s facade; both of them were completed for recreating the old times atmosphere.
