BOOKEND Joan Didion’s recently released memoir, ‘Blue Nights,’ is a follow-up to ‘The Year of Magical Thinking.’ Didion is one of the greatest living writers, now nearing the end of her life, and here chronicling the degeneration of a brilliant, neurotic, and beautifully subtle mind. ‘The Year of (<BD><G /CDIFDIB} AJGGJR@? OC@ T@<M <˞@M D?DJI}N husband passed away, a year when she still kept his shoes in case he would need them when he came back. ‘Blue Nights’ is an account of the early death and bereavement of Didion’s daughter Quintana Roo, and describes the time in spring when the lights turn eerie on dusk, the signal of the beginning of summer, but also of the end, “Blue nights are the opposite of the dying of the brightness, but they are also its warning.” Didion’s style, as always, is incisive and taunt, her prose rhythmic without loosing analytical KJR@M .C@ M@˛@>ON =<>F JI < GDA@ NP>>@NNAPG =T many standards, not unmarked by fame, money, NOMJIB NJ>D<G DI˛P@I>@ <I? There. That sounds plausible, doesn’t it? Moreover, additional help is amply at hand further down the line in an overabundance of approaches extending, but not limited, to biological, psychological, religious, economic and philosophical angles. Phew. Admittedly there’s a lot to chew so let’s be selective and look at a few discourses only. Anything but tempting – if I may be so bold and air an opinion. “(Happiness is) the virtuous activity of the soul in accordance with reason.” – Aristotle Interestingly, good old Aristotle, in 350 BCE, also commented on riches and honour to be part of the innate human quest for happiness or eudaimonia, the Greek word to sum up ‘being well and doing well’: the practice of virtue. Happiness, he argues, is a human desire entirely for its own sake whereas health, friendship and the above wealth and merit constitute simply a means to a ‘happy feeling’. Contrary to some religious beliefs eudaimonia is characteristic of a good life, a pursuit or an activity though and not an isolated emotion or a general state. He advocates a clear, lucid, empty, and open mind in order for an individual’s innate brilliance, peace, and transpersonal wisdom to shine forth naturally. Humour me for a moment and explore what could happen when our often extrinsic view of the world were to start corresponding to how it truly is; then the subjective view and reality might finally shift into mutual synchronicity: I wonder whether this is in fact an environment where harmony, true happiness, and peace can start reigning. “Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one's values.” – Ayn Rand

FOLLOW YOUR BLISS It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Josef Campbell’s admonition to “follow your own bliss”. In Sanskrit, the ancient spiritual language of the world, there are three O@MHN OC<O M@KM@N@IO OC@ =MDIF OC@ EPHKDIB J˙ KG<>@ OJ OC@ ocean of transcendence: 1. Sat = Being 2. Chit = Consciousness 3. Ananda = Bliss or Rapture Big words with still bigger meanings, even for the more savvy ones among us! Rapture, come take my hand and take me to my consciousness (preferably higher) and my =@DIB RCJ <H $ DI OC@ KMJ>@NNĂ PO CJR ?J $ ˚I? OC@@ “Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.” – Ernest Hemingway Not long ago, my personal quest for bliss and inner contentment enticed me to attend a happiness therapy seminar aptly labelled “From Monkey Minds to Buddhain-a-Box”. I had heard about my brain being considered in a state at times, be that dazed, confused, or occasionally hung over, but the term Brainstate Training, which was the essence of the transition to the promised land, had me nothing less than dumbfounded. Brian Loafer1, our friendly lecturer with a distinct Texas accent, likely and at a guess in his late thirties, misguidedly tries to bank credibility almost immediately by announcing that he just married to a woman nearly twice his age. You’ve got to be joking! I can’t but help the double-take. I neatly wrap up my amazement and lock up any ensuing judgemental thoughts in an imaginary

drawer in the hope that I can still keep an open mind for Boxy Buddha. “Retraining the state of your brain is the miracle work we practice here”, Brian promises. It changes our lives and liberates our minds forever – a prerequisite for a blissful existence, a permanent state of happiness. You’ll forgive me if I don’t regurgitate his sophisticated mumbo jumbo here and paraphrase how this is supposed to work for us mere mortals: ‘You are to take one measure of plain old zeta-brain (of the alert, awake and conscious kind) and quieten it down by NRDO>CDIB J˙ OC@ DII@M HJIF@T <F< TJPM OCJPBCO B@I@M<OJM .CJPG? Brian may have every reason to celebrate the on-going demise of my head(iness) but I’ve decided that I was far from ready to wire my temples to a black box and risk turning into Frankenstein’s daughter – even if that meant missing out on guaranteed nirvana. z#<KKDI@NN =@GJIBN OJ OC@ N@GA NPˎ>D@IO { – Aristotle Brian and his brain wave machine are now a thing of the K<NO JA >JPMN@ <I? $ <H I@<MGT =<>F JI OC<O APGGT ˛@O>C@? brink of pursuing my own rapture. Truth be told, there is no uniform miracle solution to “live in happiness” – I hope this much has transpired. S>@KO OCDN ODH@ $ <H HJM@ generous and forgiving with myself. KAMAU I don't think i have heard anything like this before in Bali. Tell me more about the show in detail? I break it down like this; What if you woke up one morning to the governments of the world announcing that a comet was going to NH<NC DIOJ OC@ <MOC IJO GJIB <˞@M NPIN@O OJ?<T <I? CPH<IDOT RJPG? go the way of the dinosaurs? My production "There Is No 2morrow" is a one act play that uses dance theater, poetry, documentary footage, visual media and music to show how a few individuals, couples and groups, personally and collectively live out some of their moments on their last day alive. The concept was inspired by much hype concerning these times approaching 2012. Comet Elenin, Hopi prophecy, ascension and/or apocalypse. The show's underlying theme is that we must stop taking ourselves, each other and our time for granted. Live it up in, in a conscious way. Who is involved? I'm writing, directing and choreographing DO $O GG =@ OC@ ˚MNO ODH@ OC@ =@NO CDKCJK dance crews in Bali, Aerial Crew, Peaz Makers, G.O.G. will be dancing and doing choreography together, instead of competing against each other. Gonna have Sausan and Alex Valenzula in it. Soloman, Ozlem, and Goody Gumdrops are producing a track for one of the dance sequences. Also a couple other folks whom shall remain nameless for now. What is your background in performing arts? I've performed in large scale professional events as an actor, poet, rap artist, dancer, dj, choreographer and mc. My mother was a drama teacher and heavily involved in the African-American arts scene in San Francisco when I was young, so i got into it @<MGT $ R<N DI HT ˚MNO KMJA@NNDJI<G OC@<O@M production when I was like 6 yrs. old. Acted in commercials, danced in t.v. ad campaigns, toured in a one act play, collaborated with super dope poets in performances, released 2 rap albums, shared the stage with artists like Outkast, Lauryn Hill, Ceelo, Wu Tang Clan, traveled to many countries and was in negotiations with Def Poetry Jam when I decided to move to Bali. What have you been doing here in Bali? I do a variety of things, mostly centered around performance and teaching the local and expat youth how to get down in hiphop movement. I train and manage Aerial Crew, currently Indonesia's top break dance crew. I've choregraphed a kids musical, along with dance numbers for various events. I've produced and hosted poetry events for Ubud Writers Festival, dj'd and mc'd a number of events...a bunch of things. In a way, I feel like I'm still just getting started. 38

INTERVIEW ANDREW CAMPBELL Why did you decide to produce some live theatre here? I didn't really think of it it like, "I'm gonna do a theatrical production." When i think about producing an event, I think about bringing OJB@OC@M < Q<MD@OT JA ?D˙@M@IO K@MAJMH<I>@ ?DN>DKGDI@N =@><PN@ i express through multiple performance disciplines. A couple of years when Home Cafe was poppin', we did this monthly event called Live Mysteries. It was just live performance in the raw, with a live hiphop band and poetry, dance crews, singing, storytelling, live K<DIODIB ?EDIB

EPNO APGG JI >M@<ODQ@ @I@MBT ˛JRDIB $ >JIND?@M HTN@GA a performance artist in the classical sense, like how Sammy Davis Jr. and other artists of that era were all actors, singers, dancers, comedians, etc. They expressed themselves in multiple lanes. So with this production, I intend to bring a variety of performance elements together. The best way to do it and not have hella socialites talking through the entire performance is to focus the format, theater style. People come in the venue, get their drinks and minggle for a bit and when the show starts, the bar is closed, everybody take a seat, be quiet and appreciate a live performance full of heart, substance and soul. Do we need to look beyond the world of DJ performance in Bali? If so, why? Any place which intends to have vibrant healthy entertainment scene NEEDS to have more than just dj events. It should have the actual artists that make the songs djs play, come and perform live. It needs to support the live performers it already has and give them the opportunity to grow. It needs to challenge its artists, live and dj, to try new things. The artists themselves need to step out of their comfort zones and just try new things. Artists need to collaborate more. A vibrant scene has the business-money-logistical people collaborating with the creative minded people to push the envelope of performance, not just produce the same ole thing over and over. It also takes Q@IP@N =@DIB <=G@ OJ O<F@ < MDNF JA HDIDH<G KMJ˚O =M@<FDIB @Q@I or even a short term loss, in order to generate the energy and vibe that reaps long term gains. A big thing would be for artists themselves to begin producing more events, in which they have full creative control. Much of the performance stagnation, in my opinion, is due to performance artists being at the dictates of people who have a limited view of performance art or they just want moving decorations for their events. There is no reason why <GD NCJPG?I O C<Q@ < >JHKG@O@GT J˙ OC@ CJJF K@MAJMH<I>@ N>@I@ there's alot of talent here.

The Faile collective are one of the most popular and recognizable international producers of street-displayed artwork. Their allure has prompted an invitation to paint the exterior of London's Tate Modern gallery in May 2008. In 2007 their shows in London and New York sold out instantly, and inspired memorable, and widelyreported, scenes amongst would-be buyers that were considerably uglier than Faile's charming and eye-catching art.

Eliminating the problem of painting of walls whilst keeping one eye out for the <POCJMDOD@N =T NDHKGT NG<KKDIB OC@ ˚IDNC@? <MO PK <N < ˛TKJNO@M !<DG@ N OM@H@?JPNGT appealing work graces brick surfaces across the world. Lacking in aggression, perhaps, but certainly not passion, the pieces here testify that the real power of Americana is that it can always be appropriated and enjoyed on one's own terms.

We had created a system using a pipe that came at the back of my neck and who was hidden underneath a blue suit

2@ OC@I HJ?D˚@? @Q@MTOCDIB RDOC >JHKPO@M BM<KCD>N OJ H<F@ DO appear as real. The vomit was everywhere and this scene was heavy especially for the poor John and Jodie who had to clean many times. It was extremely clever and the original recipe of vomiting was by Roman. It was disgusting, and Roman himself probably found it funnier than anybody else, he was like child, he just couldn’t get enough. Then there was the placement of the vomit and he said "no, a little bit more here on the book of Bacon and Kokoschka, yes put it there .... .". In the end it was fun. Do you believe in good and bad luck? (long pause). Yeah, I guess so. It's been a whole run of bad luck so far. And you feel you have been dealt a bad hand? Yeah, but I guess it was my choices that led to me ending up in here. I guess it's my own fault. I guess it's not really about luck. But, then again I have been lucky to meet some really good people who have helped me a lot. I've met a few nice people a long the way. Are you frightened of death? (long pause). I don't want to die. It's hard to say, I guess everyone is afraid. But it's not really appealing to get blindfolded and you know… That's an understatement! I have read a little bit about how they do it. As the night progressed the focus turned to music, with many acts donning the Deus Veranda Stage and putting on quite a show for the crowded 500+ back garden.
