bookband Modern Indonesian Art Chromeo
It’s not the most exciting book that you will add to your shelf, but it is hands down the most comprhensive resource of Indonesian art featuring 439 artists from the mid 19th century right up until present day. Structured in chronilogical order and as diverse as this country itself, it’s an archipelego of biographical information on each artist showcasing their best work. The selected artists were chosen to represent work across a broad range of styles, ranging from more traditional such as painting in water colour and oil, drawing, sketching, print-making and sculpture, to the modern multimedia, video art and installation.
20
More than anything, Business Casual, confirms Chromeo’s sound is not going to evolve much beyond what you’ve heard before. And actually, I still maintain a stance that tracks like “Destination: Overdrive” and “Rage” from their 2004 album “She’s in Control” still top their collection. But with this latest album, the Chromeo duo hailing from Montreal confirmed if they know anything about music, they know synth, funk and an over-the-top 80’s electroclash sound that only two guys from Canada could reproduce. So, if you liked them before, you will still enjoy the catchy synth solos and drum machine beats. But, if you didn’t like anything Chromeo produced in the past 6 years, then proceed with caution.
AJA MONET
Brooklyn born and Chicago bloomed poet, Aja Monet, has just released her debut EP, Scared to Make Love / Scared Not To. And this issue’s theme being Love, we couldn’t imagine not featuring Aja s unique message and delivery. “My vision of the album is to create discussion around how we see the feminine energy in all of us and how we enable and how we hinder love in all areas of our lives.” Aja Monet aims to heal and to open the heart by expressing women’s insecurities when they lack the words and to open feminine perspectives on love to the men in their lives. This fantastic debut EP is available for free on her website AjaMonet.com. The artist takes her quest for Love a step further by sending any donations for her work to aid with Haiti relief effort in Kenscoff, via International Helping Hearts Orphanage.

Phoenix is perhaps the newest of the shop/cafe crossover concept stores. A strong sense of street influence prevails in both the shop interior design and also with the range of fashion. It’s a good mix of international and local labels ranging from edgy t-shirt prints, to neo-punk inspired stuff for urban situations. The bar at the front of the shop may be small, but it is becoming an underground place to escape the more frequented cafes.
Ok, it’s not a new place in Bali, and everyone from local to International press have reviewed The Corner store. And well, what can I say, it’s for good reason, the place has become an institution in the Seminyak café scene. If it’s not the caffiene addiction, it’s the all-round good fresh vibe of the place that keeps people coming back. Popularity sometimes comes at a price, but not here, the rags in the fashion section boast some of the best labels on the island and the food and juices keep everyone kicking a healthy lifestyle.

It’s hard not to get totally distracted and absorbed by this quirky eclectic shop/café/bar space. From the custom-designed furniture, to the table of “pop-up” books, and the limited edition fashion range, WOM is an adult playground full of vibrant colour. You can see the famous egg furniture and other fun egg inspired interior pieces as well as furniture, lights, clothing, plates, jewelry, food, planters, speakers, bags, and belts.
Healthy, healthy, healthy… This café may be small and tucked away, but it’s a front runner in the bid for taking the prize for the best salad in town. love What do I know about love? Well, I have experienced love from time to time throughout my life; for my family, friends, my pets, and those I have been in relationships with, and sometimes rather abstract things. Love seems to be experiential on many levels from the conscious to the unconscious and the unconditional. At the conscious level I am aware of the way my actions and thoughts are influenced and then projected in reality, differing a lot from how my unconscious love for things and people produces activity that I am unaware of and that only becomes apparent when I see the manifestation of it in the conscious realm. So, I wonder which is derived first? Good question right? And, what about unconditional love? Maybe unconditional could be expressed as the conscious and the unconscious working in symphonious harmony without the restrictions of expectation. A conscious loving of just what “is” while also being conscious to nurture the unconscious manifestation. Is it possible to live in a state like this constantly, because I am definitely
not there yet? Or am I just way too far gone down the road of pre-conceived judgments, and if so, where did I learn to be so judgmental. And more to the point, how the hell do I get rid of this compartmentalization of all experiences in my life so I can go forward towards unconditional love for all things? Most likely, those restrictive, unconscious belief systems steeped into my core psyche during my early childhood have marked out the boundaries of my expectation playing field and the rules of the judgment game. Am I the player, the spectator, or the umpire? Within the reality of my perception, I guess I created all of the above. Therefore to begin to resonate closer to unconditional love for things I should probably move the goal posts of my game, write the new rule book, even hunt for new fresh players in a game that has no preconceived ideas of either past or future, a game that is focused in a constant state of the present. Living and loving, while being exposed and influenced by only the pure experience of the “now”.

BEnd over, sex My best friend`s cousin`s twin sister, Ava, slept with a man again after believing for 7 feminine years, that she was a lesbian, that in this world, you`re either straight or gay. She even thought bisexuals are greedy people. “It`s their soft soft breasts that drive me crazy,” once Ava told me. She wet her lips several times as she told me how wonderful it feels to be inside a girl. Her eyes sparked when she explained the different smell and shape of vaginas. I was struggling to believe that Ava wasn`t born gay. The day I heard that she jumped from the ethereal curvaceous world back to the flat hairy one, I decided to interview her. Did he really charm her heart or was the penis just the right-sized dildo? How liquid can the sexuality be? Ava had boyfriends when she was younger. Lots of them. One day she decided to have sex with a girl and got electrified by a feeling the boys never gave her. She was certain it was an orgasm. Then of course like almost all newly blossomed lesbians, Ava went to her first gay pride and listened to Ani DiFranco. She always wears high heels and knows how to dance, so men love her and often show her too much of their love. There were times when she was trying so hard to push them away by stating her new sexuality explicitly. After two and a half years of girlfriends coming and going, Ava became more comfortable with herself. Her fire was no longer burning but warming. She politely thanked the men for the praise, diplomatically answered the questions and gracefully walked the insults away. She`s sexually mature and passed her trial period of the gay world successfully. Then she decided to take holiday back to the other side. Did she miss it? “I rarely miss old things. I always look for something new. Being as flexible as this is new for me,” Ava answered. I asked her if she was high when she had sex with this guy. Ava said, 30
I was horny and it was just a pure coincidence that the most attractive person in the room was a male. He made super funny jokes and didn`t smell too bad. He had no boobs and I couldn`t finger him, too bad. But those aren`t enough reasons why I shouldn`t have sex with him.” Ava told me that she didn`t come. But apparently, to some people good sex is like a super yummy club sandwich and orgasm is just an extra cheese. “It was still great and he has skill on oral sex. It`s good because most guys claim they`re vagina masters but have no clue when they have to deal with them or can`t even bothered to go down there.” So everybody`s happy. Interesting thing is the one night stand grows. Ava said it turned into good conversation over pizza and long island iced tea, then to an “I miss you” SMS and DVD nights. She started to think that he looked hot in that grey shirt. She was awed when he said he had a big day playing with the neighbor`s kids. “Nothing`s feel unnatural though. It`s a bit weird but I don`t feel like escaping. The flow is smooth and harmless, so I`m curious to see how this is going to end,” said Ava. When asked whether she still thinks that she`s gay, Ava said, “I love women, so very much. I would love to spend the rest of my life with a woman. But that got nothing to do with me liking sex, attractive people and bendable boundaries.” I asked no more questions. It`s clear enough that sexuality can`t be clear. It has its own brain. It`s infinite, uncontrollable and doesn’t need a reason. Ava`s new way of thinking makes me want to sprint and fly. Maybe sex and love are two different things. Maybe sexuality is liquid or some people just don`t like to put things into boxes. Maybe in order to make peace with our sexuality is to be open to all possibilities. words bianca timmerman

osho on love
W
What we call love is really a whole spectrum of relating, reaching from the earth to the sky. At the most earthy level, love is sexual attraction. Many of us remain stuck there, becaurse our conditioning and repressions. Actually the biggest 'problem' with sexual love is that it never lasts. Only if we accept fact can we then really calebrate it for what it is - welcome its happening, and say good-bye with gratitude when it's not. Then as we mature, we can begin to experience the love that exists beyong sexuality and honors the unique individuality of the other. We begin to understand thjat our partner often functions as a mirror, reflecting unseen aspects of our deeper self and supporting us to become whole. This love is based in freedom, not expectation or need. Its wings take us higher and higher towards the universal love that experiences all as one.
32
T
These three things are to be taken note of: the lowes t love is sex - it is physical - and the highe st refine ment of love is comp assio n. Sex is below love, comp assio n is above love; love is exact ly in the middl e. Very few peopl e know what love is. Ninet ynine perce nt of peopl e, unfor tunately, think sexua lity is love - it is not. Sexua lity is very anima l; it certa inly has the potential of growi ng into love, but it is not actua l love, only a potential... If you becom e aware and alert, medit ative, then sex can be trans forme d into love. And if your medit ativen ess becom es total, absol ute, love can
be trans forme d into comp assio n. Sex is the seed, love is the flowe r, comp assio n is the fragra nce. Budd ha has define d comp assio n as 'love plus medit ation'. When your love is not just a desire for the other, when your love is not only a need, when your love is a sharin g, when your love is not that of begga r but an empe ror, when your love is not askin g for something in return but is ready only to give - to give for sheer joy of giving - then add medit ation to it and the pure fragra nce is releas ed. That is comp assio n; comp assio n is the highe st pheno meno n.7

WORDS FROM THE MOUTHS OF Word of Mouth, affecti o nately called WOM, i s a combi n ati o n of desi g n, humor and love of course. Spearheaded by creati ve couple, Valenti n a , andWelcomeAbhi, toit theis onewonderful of the isworld land s offood,WOM.fashi. on and event hotspots. Who and what is Word of Mouth? V: Word of Mouth is myself... and my muse… *laughs* A: No its all you! V: Disciplines are architecture, interior design, furniture design, clothing, food & beverage, entertainment. And then we source other designers to collaborate with like for our jewelry. When and where did you meet? V: It was in 2002 at Ku De Ta. As romantic as it gets. *laughs* What were you doing at the time? A: We were both living in Bali. V: I was working, I was running this compound of villas, Surga Villas, which I had designed and built. And Abhi was taking a sabbatical. How did the idea of collaborating come about? A: Well we had already been designing pieces, collections of furniture and objects for personal use… V: Well for us and for my projects. I mean, before we built WOM, I had started my architectural practice, Pianeta Sud Est, and we started to design furniture to incorporate into the architecture. Then we took them to some fairs in Milan. So the years went by and we accumulated a few things and... A: And then we saw this space on jalan Kunti and it looked interesting. It looked like a space unlike many others we had come across. It was an interesting little complex of shops, with a courtyard; the 50
space in itself was attractive. So in fact we took the space without really knowing…. V: At first we wanted to do a shop just for the furniture, and then the people of the actual development said: “But this space is for a café…” So then we said “ok we’ll do a shop and a café...” This is how it started actually. And then because we did a shop, we thought “well might as well have some clothes inside…” A: And then there was the pop-up book collection. It’s something that brings attention to a form of design as well; it’s something that we all sort of grew up with but never really paid attention to. That was a nice little collection we brought in. V: Well we just decided that anything that we like, that was an interesting design or conceptually wise, we would incorporate. There would not be boundaries. What design concept do you always keep in mind when creating under WOM or introducing designers to the shop? V: It has to be something that has a content, which has a sense of humor. We tend to choose or do things that… A: Funny things attract us you know. V: That’s why we attract each other. A: I’m not so funny though, sadly. *laughs* V: … have a sense of humor and a very specific aesthetic. A: It’s also nice to see effort in a piece, things that really hit you, kind of slap you in the face or give you a good feeling. When you see that someone has put effort and thought also make a piece attractive.
51
52
We first met at KISS Villas. How did this project come about? V: It came about through a friend; a friend introduced us to the client. And the brief was “Please do something that doesn’t exist anywhere else on the island”. So, it went gradually, we did a first presentation, from there it developed. So obviously the steps have been followed by the client. But we were very free, I felt very free in doing pretty much what I wanted in many ways. A: You even complicated the task for yourself by making all these different villas. Each one has a different shape, form, size, space… V: Well that’s the way I like to do things. Which is your favorite villa? V: I think that they all have some good points but if I have to choose one it would be villa 4, which is the one with the twin glass rooms. But then I really like in the first one with the seat made in concrete which is like a big round shape. I mean each one has some very nice elements. Which of your objects is your favorite? A: “Don’t break my eggs” is one of my favorites as well as “Starstruck”. “Starstruck” is the bench in plexiglass. This is really nice as well. Both of them.. V: They are very strong... For me I agree. What’s the story behind it? V: Well we did the table in the shape of egg, that was the first piece and then we decided to do a few pieces within that collection. So when we came up with the different pieces we made this because we thought the egg basket is a common image... A: That everyone can relate to… How is the jewelry in the shop different yet complimentary to your objects and interior design? A: There is informality in the jewelry that allows it to be playful, not too delicate… V: It balances, if we had the jewelry that is really designed then it would be too much of the same thing. We fell in love with this jewelry even before WOM existed. I had bought a few for myself and when we decided to open the
shop, we re-contacted the designer. A: Actually all the things we brought in we had before the idea of the shop came about. We’ve been living with these things. Everything on the menu is delicious and unexpected; do you work out each dish? Or does your chef have carte blanche? V: We are very much hands on in food and beverage. Especially Abhi. At the beginning we had a friend, chef at the Alila now, who gave us a consultancy. But we came up with the flavors we wanted. We also put together some of the dishes. For example the ravioli is a dish that we have been doing in the house. A few more things we developed and a then more when Fabrice came in. But nothing gets done that we don’t approve. What could you eat over and over again? And drink over and over again? V: The beetroot koftas for me is something very special that Abhi came up with. I have never tried it anywhere else in my life and it is such a yummy little snack. My favorite dish is the seared tuna with jalapeno. A: That is a dish Fabrice brought in and it’s homage to NoBu. In the drinks, it would be the Bite Me shots. There are some nice juices on there too. V: The litchi juice is really nice. You also host weekly parties and now Boozey Lunches as well. What has been your most memorable performance? A: I want more Boozey Lunches. It was really nice. First of all it was in the day, anything in the day feels good. It felt easy, it felt fun. As for performances, we really got close to the artists everytime. We had les Nubians, Bebel Gilberto, Boogie Boy and Kitsune. I’ve gotten close to all of them. The nice thing about Bebel is that she came on a little holiday and right when we met she was like “Bali feels really nice. I would love to sing here one of these days”. She had 53

4 days here and we said “Well would you be keen to do it on this trip”. And she did. V: For me the most memorable was les Nubians. Just because we did it for the first time in our space. Because it was the first time, we made a lot of mistakes but still the feeling was wonderful. A: And again we got close to them and we really had a good time getting to know them. And they also had a good time while they were here. It was a real holiday with a little gig. V: I think that s the nice thing about doing these things in Bali. It’s more about having a little holiday and playing your music. In general, also for the other artists... A: This is how it has come up. They treated us to something and we treated them to a nice holiday. Who do you dream of seeing on the Word Of Mouth stage? A: The list is endless. One woman who has already performed here and really blew my mind was Erykah Badu. She gave a personal performance for like 40 of us three years ago. She would be somebody that I’d really like to see in our space. That would be a treat. Do you have any plans to bring WOM overseas? Which ideal cities could newly represent Word Of Mouth? A: Yes, the designs to begin with, as in the furniture and the clothing. We are realizing that running the rest of it is quite intensive. V: But never say never. We are planning to export Word of Mouth, but we don’t know in which form because it depends where and who we find in the different places. Obviously if we have a great partner somewhere, that is willing to do the bar and is perfect to do the bar, and then we would do both. We are thinking about Los Angeles, it’s the first on our list. A: And Paris. V: In Paris we would have an apartment/ showroom. So every place is different. Sydney could be a good place too. A last word on future projects or collaborations? A: There are a couple of artists that we are quite keen on bringing in, whose works we like but that we have not met. I would like to work towards doing something together with them. And also bringing in more musical artists. We had the idea of doing a studio. Well thank you for participating to this issue, and congratulations on everything. Love, love.

FAUX (fox) NEWS ast night I had the most peculiar dream; I was talking to Glen Beck the moronic right wing preacher of ignorance on FOX cable news service and he started doing his normal tear filled tantrum of how the USA is going down the toilet and becoming a communist country such as Norway all due to the fact that George W. Bush is no longer President, and blaming all the US’s economic woes on the socialist administration of Barak Obama. I became quite annoyed so I punched him in the face and he then suddenly transformed before my eyes into a crying old lady pleading not to be hit again, then I woke up. I have no idea what was going on with my subconscious mind to create such a dream, and as far as violent acts go I have not had a fight since I was putting on a school uniform. I have only fairly recently become aware of the FOX news channel as I had not in the past installed cable TV. My first taste of this channel was watching the program ‘Hannity’ where I initially thought it was a political satire or comedy program, however when I realized there was no punch line, well to be honest I was flabbergasted with the absolute nonsense he was talking. I cannot remember the specifics now, but it was decisive hate/ fear motivated drivel as he claimed boldly that he was a proud Christian and a true patriot and that the USA was a Christian nation. Again recently I watched a little of the ‘Hannity’ program where he was interviewing ex President George W. Bush promoting his new book, actually using interview was the wrong word, a ‘love in’ would be more appropriate as not one question asked was in anyway investigative, it actually seemed as if Hannity wanted to get down on his knees and undo George’s zipper, it was a pathetic superficial cheer squad style journalism that should have made even a hard core conservative
L

republican voters cringe. Samual Adam’s famous quote ‘patriotism and religion is the last refuge of the scoundrel’ really does seem to apply here and the whole FOX network in general. Funny, I had always believed that the US constitution separated church from state and this was one of its guiding principles such as the first amendment which guarantees freedom of speech and being a true patriot was an individual questioning the government? Thomas Jefferson even wrote in the declaration of independence that ‘the power of the government is derived from the governed.’ Up until this time it had always been claimed that Kings ruled nations by the authority of God, so this statement was a radical departure from divine rule to a secular state. For me to use a metaphor FOX news has become a bad accident on the side of the road; I know I should not slow down and have a look whilst I drive by, but still I slow down to have a gawk anyway, then I see the victims spread out bleeding on the road and it upsets me so I drive on shaking my head asking myself why did I look? It really amazes me that any so called intelligent human being could view these programs and take them seriously, yet I told that approximately 50% of the American population uses this channel as their primary news source. This is a frightening figure especially how this channel loudly claims it is independent (We report, you decide) but is so obviously rightwing of centre in its views and biased support for the Republican Party. This was really brought home when FOX’s owner Australian born Rupert Murdoch donates the largest contribution in US history to ($ 1 million) to pro Republican campaigns in the US midterm elections this year (2010). FOX is part of Murdoch’s News Corporation which is the third largest media conglomerate on earth and owns numerous influential newspapers and
electronic media companies (see for list: h t t p : //e n . w i k i p e d i a . o r g / w i k i / N e w s _ Corporation). This action even upset many shareholders who brought up their concerns in the AGM stating that he must damage the News Corp many news brands as being an Independent non biased news sources. FOX news is on the more extreme right of American politics, but now it seems that an Australian has come along and manages to unite all sides of American politics and news agencies in their attacks on an individual who, if Americans really believed in their ideals they so strongly advocate around the world should be greeting as a hero. Of course I am referring to Julian Assange who through his www.wikileaks.org site has released information that has embarrassed many governments and put truths out into the public domain that in the past would have been officially denied, but now fortunately cannot be as documented proof exists. The reaction of the US has not been to look into allegations of torture, abuse, targeted civilian deaths and deliberate lies within the military and intelligence agencies and political elite, but to attack the individual who has brought the world’s attention to these practices that many suspected, but the official line has always been denial. For a country such as the USA proudly claim to be the leading light on the hill pushing for freedom of speech, transparency in government, liberty and the promotion of democracy throughout the world to attack an individual who is in essence practicing these very principles is outrageously hypocritical and shows to the world that the USA’s claims are a total myth unless it suits their own national interest. Before I am accused of being anti-American or anti- Australian for that matter as the Australian government’s actions have been incredibly inadequate in support of one of its citizens who has not broken
any Australian or USA laws, except laws it seems the US are trying to establish as I write. I actually admire the USA and what it stands for if their true founding spirit is upheld. Its ideologies such as freedom of speech, separation of church and state, the pursuit of happiness, its culture of entrepreneurial and scientific enterprise, the generosity of its people and the history of helping around the world in times of natural disaster, disasters such as the tsunami that hurt Indonesia in 2004. I have worked for a North American company and the vast majority of Americans I met were beautiful, intelligent, friendly and caring people. I grew up watching American TV programs, Eight is Enough, Happy Days, Goodtimes and other such programs and listening to American music. John Steinbeck and Ralph Waldo Emerson are two of my favorite writers and I still believe musicians such Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen are following in the path of Bob Dylan and Woodie Guthrie who so artistically have demonstrated their love for their nation. All have been accused of being un-American in their time as they may have held a critical view over some aspect of their country’s government’s actions. Generally they were shouted down by as being unpatriotic because they were in some way critical of the established authority and spoke out in their own way against it. Now there is an Australian who some in the political elite of the USA are calling for his assassination, to be hunted down like Al Queda and treated as a terrorist. A case of so called good Christians being very un- Christ like. This really is absurd for in essence the individual has broken no laws (the rape charges appear to be a set up and even if he is guilty it does not detract from the information wikileaks has made available) but has exposed many laws that have been broken that are proving to be
extremely embarrassing to many in the established power elites. To claim he has come in the possession of stolen goods and therefore is guilty of theft, well if this is the case then I await the arrest of every newspaper editor/ TV news producer who has also passed on this information. The other attacks on Julian Assange claim he has endangered innocent people’s lives due to the release of these cables. Again this appears to be totally false and even Defense Secretary Robert Gates admitted there has been no evidence to base this claim on. Even if this was the case and people’s lives were at risk it would hardly be a concern to the US government. This was demonstrated quite clearly under the Bush administration where CIA agent Valerie Plame was ousted as CIA agent by the Scooter Libby with it seems the approval of Vice President Dick Cheney as revenge for her husband Joe Wilson not agreeing with one of the official lies that was used to help justify the Iraq invasion. Wilson wrote an article in the New York Times titled ‘What I didn’t find in Africa’ which totally exposed the lie that was being pushed by the White House that Saddam Hussein was buying uranium from Niger. (http://query. nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C 07E3D61E3AF935A35754C0A9659C 8B63) This was a case where members of the government deliberately named a CIA agent thus destroying her career and who knows damaging how many people’s lives. We have the USA with it seems the aid of the UK, Sweden and Australia going after an individual who has broken no laws who is courageously forcing freedom of speech and transparency in corporations and government in order that they may start to behave ethically. The reality is that if any party has behaved ethically they will have nothing to fear with the www.wikileaks.org exposure. We are now faced with 2 extremes of news
sources, Wikileaks style reporting where just the truth is exposed without any spin and the likes of Glen Beck on FOX who rant and rave on about the US of A being the greatest nation on earth and when faced with facts that do not suit their narrow view point they attack the messenger. Glen Beck becomes a political wise man who is really just a loud mouthed ex alcoholic drug abuser who throws out accusations and suppositions about people that regularly turn out to be wrong, but he is protected by the government of the USA and the first amendment protecting freedom of speech (www.counterpunch.org). In the other corner we have a nerdy computer geek who is highly intelligent exposing truths without any spin for stories to be taken up by major newspaper and media organizations. No wonder the major media players, governments and corporations with things to hide are worried! The computer geek has become more evil than Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein combined and through pressure from the US he has had his Swiss bank account frozen (never a problem for Nazi’s), Visa and Mastercard will no longer process donations to Wikileaks, (still ok for the Ku Klux Klan), and server providers will no longer host www.wikileaks.org This really is a major attack not only on an individual but on any freedom of speech and the freedom of the internet. Watch this closely as if the US government does some how close this free flow of information down, then it is a very dark time ahead in regards to our freedoms, the very freedoms that the USA is meant to champion. FAUX is French for fake!! PEACE.

The Nasdaq of spirituality When computers, cell phones, guns, Gap, and Coca Cola begin to loose points faster than you read this article; there is no market in the world that will grow rapidly other than the new age market. Osho was maybe one of first spiritual teachers that we needed once upon a century to help us shake off our personal “I owe the world” concept that most of us are born with. When his message got into the main stream, pretty soon the air conditioned, marbled meditation rooms, the swan ponds and scattered peacocks the $6 cappuccino and sushi gave us a real lesson in how spirituality and money goes very well together. You better run fast from the meditation hall to another to catch up as many work shops as you can consume, as the meter is running. You get green palm trees for your “greens”. Yes it is ancient news and we heard enough of how this sweet grand father decorated himself with diamonds and rollsroyce and yes he did take it too far, but his message was loud and clear “ if its big and expensive its probably better quality, so go for it”. As spirited beings we appreciate what we buy for more. We put a larger value when we pay more. There are no more $1 a day workshops that teach how to heal your inner child, scream your anger, laugh, hug, or dance till you drop. Viapasana by donation, Tantra (if you breath too fast you come too fast), or any other latest teachings. Unless you are willing to live with the monks you must pay !! Only few years back people were furious when gurus charged any thing at all. Spirituality was free. And it was for the “freaks” who traveled to India. Other names came up to replace backpackers spirituality and translated ideas to fit the t-shirt and snickers society as maroon color was never “hot”. A variety of “psychological technology” like the “I M”, “The Est.”, “Silva Mind control” and Land mark education mushroomed all over. No one dared to mention that those who wrote those programs just came back from India and 58
were cashing in on their spiritual rides, just that they replaced the orange sarong with an Armani suit. And if they haven’t been to India they had been at least to Ed Asbury or Woodstock or traveled with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I did my silent retreats (viapasana) with Christopher Titmus from the Gaya house, back in 1995. Ten days for only $70. I’ve sat under the Buddha tree in Bohdgaya , (India) and contemplated “why me” silently, checking out the shaved heads and maroon dressed guys. Those where the days !!! Existence was taking care of me free. My tears had no price tag and finding my truth was relatively cheap. Telephone calls to the west were the most expensive part of my spiritual journey . Now the gurus can travel to you. Sit in your living room, drink your organic tea and OM with you as long as you can pay. Puna welcomed me with a German bakery and an HIV test. Cause if you want to have safe sex as much as possible and eat your cake after , you better get tested. And how could you experience spirituality without safe sex ???? Donation workshops are more of an economic experiment, Meditation and personal growth without a price tag. People can give what its worth for them. But how many of us really drop a “pile in the bucket”, if no one really sees how much you put. Is there any more trust in humanity? Spiritually is something that you cannot “take” with you in your backpack when you leave. Also there is nothing to show for when you get back home. It is not a traveling souvenir, a postcard proofing you where there or a t-shirt saying “been there done that”. Your friends and family thought you “lost it”. But nowadays you must pre -book a year in advance to ensure a cushion for you anywhere.
Yes, it is reversed psychology; if you give spirituality for free then it means you got enough, and who does ?! Thank you OSHO for that lesson, and for bringing spirituality into the matrix. Yes we do owe the world, allot of gratitude. If there was a spiritual nasdaq I would put all my money into it. When computers, cell phones, guns , Gap, Coca Cola are all loosing points faster then you read this article, there is no market in the world that is growing so rapidly these days as the “ new age “ market. Spiritual magazines, Yoga centers, Hybrid cars, Organic foods , Green concepts, and a variety of “healers” that come up with new and improved sales pitch every day. Forget your childhood traumas, balance your hormones, deal with your anger, find your truth, so help me GOD, it doesn’t end. There are more gurus then seekers. The good new my friends…… Enlightenment is for sale!

Franti ny
It was like a mini Woodstock. The once beautifully groomed lawn of the Garland estate had diminished to a muddy sludge a few inches deep with sweeaty barefooted humans wildly dancing around entirely covered from head to toe with mud. Perched up on the stage just out of harms way from the black dirty clutches of the mud-people, it seemed Franti was a little berwildered. Acceptance of people having innocent, non-violent child-like fun.

last page divine wonderland And speaking of Wonderland, you really have to wonder how a place such as this came to exist. Divine Wonderland is a bliss pocket of post-modernity right slap bang in the middle of Oberoi’s famous eat street in Bali. Don’t be fooled into a submissive retreat from the seemingly Goth décor, the food here is seriously divine. Giant dreamlike chairs dwarf the carved chaise lounges in the surreal, dark, Bordello’ish interior draped in imported curtains, designer wallpaper, and zany artwork. The music is for the young at heart and never fails to satisfy even the most forward critics. So, if you like underground Indie style music from the past, you’ll be

right at home. And, of course, the main reason to come is to smash down a meal from the eclectic menu. For meat-lovers, try diving in through the Pork Belly with Malang apple & sultana chutney sauce into the bed of wilted spinach. Epic! If, you want to eat light, the elaborate tapas menu is a perfect cocktail combo and prelude to a dance later. Anyone who is tired of the “chic’ness” in the area should try here. Late night DJ’s spin decks upstairs and live bads play music that won’t have you blocking your ears with your grandmother’s knitting needles!
