MANAGER

MANAGER’S NOTES

GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO OUR FIRST HOME GAME OF THE 2013 SEASON AT HALTON STADIUM. We are fortunate to be playing at such a fine facility and I think the move here shows the intent the club is putting in to moving the ladies team forward and progressing the women’s game. We have had an active recruitment programme over the winter and have brought in 12 new faces and hope that the squad that we now have at our disposal will enable us to be competitive over the course of the next six months. Pre-season has gone well but while we all want to be challenging for trophies, we also need to have a degree of realism and accept that it will take time for the players to gel and bed down with our pattern of play. Having said that, I have been delighted with the spirit in the squad and just how quickly the new arrivals have settled in. Last Sunday’s FA Cup tie at Aston Villa was our first opportunity to test ourselves in a competitive environment and I was really pleased with the 5-0 win. Scoring so many goals was naturally pleasing but I also thought we were defensively strong. Villa are quite a direct side and always a danger from set plays but we were strong in standing up to them. The only downside was an injury to Amanda Da Costa. We will have assessed that during the week but hopefully it isn’t too serious and we have a strong enough squad to cope with it. The draw for the quarter-final has given us another tough trip, this time to Sunderland, next weekend. Sunderland defeated Manchester City 4-0 last weekend so it will be another difficult examination for us. Tonight’s fixture is one the team have all been looking forward to since the draw was made and a local derby always whets the appetite.

We extend a warm welcome to Andy Spence and all the Everton players, officials and supporters. Andy has moved up to the main coach’s role following Mo Marley’s decision to step down at the end of last season and he has a very talented squad with several world class players who will be keen to build on strong showings over the past few years. We know we will need to be at our best to come out on top but this is a game we really want to win to put ourselves into a good position going into the start of the Super League season at Lincoln on 14 April. The Continental Cup is one of two competitions we are playing in and we have a tough group with Doncaster Rovers Belles and Chelsea, as well as Everton. We will keep assessing how we are progressing after each game but we will be aiming to make home advantage count. My message to the players before they go out tonight will be to show commitment and discipline throughout the 90 minutes and to enjoy themselves. We are a new team trying to establish ourselves so there is no pressure on the girls but if we are at our best we will have an excellent chance of making a winning start here at Halton Stadium.

Thank you for your support, Matt Beard Liverpool Ladies

Centre of Excellence News

THE LIVERPOOL Girls’ Centre of Excellence, one of only 31 such centres in the UK, have launched details of a regional trials event in June. The club is looking to recruit the most talented girls in the region to join the current COE players and represent them in the centre of excellence next season. The Centre of Excellence currently caters for over 80 talented footballers within the North West under the stewardship and guidance of Centre Technical Director Kevin Quigley, who is the current holder of a UEFA ‘A’ Licence, alongside his team of technical coaches, sports scientists and chartered physios. The purpose of FA Centres is to identify players of outstanding ability and place them in a technical and educational programme designed to produce excellence in conjunction with personal development.

The FA WSL

Budding female footballers, aged 7–17, are invited to take part in the trial for the centre of excellence, which offers structured and progressive coaching and education in areas such as sports leadership, sports psychology, injury management, fitness and nutrition. Kevin Quigley said: “This is a great opportunity for female footballers that want to get involved in the game to do so in a structured and progressive environment. We’re welcoming applications across all age groups and are looking forward to seeing the talent among the region’s girl footballers.” The club welcomes applications from any player of outstanding ability who could benefit from Centre of Excellence coaching. Trials begin on Thursday 13th June at St Edmund Arrowsmith Centre for Learning in Whiston. Sessions are free and will take place on Astroturf. For more details on the trials and how to apply email kevin.quigley@live.co.uk.

MATCH REPORT

FARA FIRES TREBLE Aston Villa Ladies 0 - Liverpool Ladies 5 FA Women’s Cup fifth round • Sunday 17 March 2013

FARA WILLIAMS hit a hat-trick as the new-look Liverpool Ladies kicked off the season by booking a place in the quarter-finals last Sunday. England midfielder Williams was one of three new signings on the scoresheet at Boldmere St Michael’s with Louise Fors and Natasha Dowie also on target. Indeed, Williams could have helped herself to a handful of goals as she also hit the woodwork twice as the Reds outplayed their hosts in difficult conditions. Matt Beard’s side went ahead inside eight minutes with Williams crashing in a spectacular 25-yarder. And the Reds doubled their advantage soon after the half-hour mark when lively winger Nicole Rolser was brought down and Swedish international Fors stepped up to convert from the spot. The Reds were cruising and they almost put the game to bed when Williams’ looping

shot rattled the crossbar and Amanda Da Costa was unfortunate not to turn the rebound home. Villa rallied in the early stages of the second half but Williams struck again with a clinical lob. The game was marred somewhat when Da Costa was carried from the field with a leg injury. But the Reds continued to show their ruthless streak with 16 minutes remaining when Dowie pounced on a defensive error to round the keeper and turn the ball home. Three minutes later Williams completed her hat-trick with a calm finish. She could have added to her tally with a late penalty after Rolser was again fouled in the area but saw her effort strike the post.

Liverpool: Quantrill; Easton, Bonner, Engen, Schroder (Evans 85); Omarsdottir, Williams, Da Costa (Holbrook 63), Rolser; Dowie, Fors (Billson 82).

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

A WARM WELCOME TO EVERYBODY FOR OUR FIRST HOME GAME OF THE SEASON - WHAT BETTER WAY TO START THAN WITH A DERBY? It has been a busy pre-season for everybody involved with Liverpool Ladies. We enjoyed a good build-up in the games we played and we were even lucky enough to have the privilege of meeting the men’s team and training with them at Melwood ahead of our first competitive match in the FA Cup at Aston Villa last Sunday. It was a great start for us with a 5-0 win. The pitch wasn’t the best so it could have been a tricky tie but we defended well as a team, scored five goals and put in a professional performance. Our reward is a quarter-final at Sunderland next weekend. That will be another tough tie, especially with it being another away game. Sunderland are top of the FA Women’s Premier League and had a good win against Manchester City last Sunday but we’ll prepare for it like we do every other game.

“All the girls have been looking forward to this match and I’m sure Everton are too.”

We have a lot of new faces in the squad but we’ve all got to know each other quickly as we’re training regularly. We’re still learning about each other but the more we train and play together it will improve week by week. Competition among the squad is high and it is important that we continue to work hard and build as a group. 8

Tonight will be a huge test with Everton being an experienced and well-organised side who have the ability to hurt teams and we will need to be aware of that. It will be a good test for us as a group and will give an indication of how we have developed. Let’s hope that we can push on from last week’s victory and instill a winning mentality around the club to start the season with. Don’t forget you can keep up to date throughout the season by following us on Twitter @LFCladies. Thank you all for your support and enjoy the game.

This season they have a new manager and a slightly revamped squad. Former assistant boss Andy Spence took over from Mo Marley in November after she stepped down a month earlier to focus on her commitments with the England Under-19s team. Since then the club saw a number of high-profile players leave the club, although England goalkeeper Rachel Brown has maintained that the Blues’ squad are in superb spirits ahead of season three, boosted by captain Jill Scott’s decision to stay with the club.

“We have a very united team at Everton, a great team ethos and a really good atmosphere, so rather than dwell on any losses we’ve adapted as a squad and we’re looking forward to this season.” RACHEL BROWN And while several players have moved across the city to join Matt Beard’s Reds, twins Vicky Jones and Kelly Jones have moved in the opposite direction to bolster the Everton squad. The Blues have been in good form during pre-season, but were frustrated last weekend when their FA Cup fifth round tie at Oxford was postponed due to a frozen pitch!

ALEX GREENWOOD Full-back Alex was another winner at the inaugural FA England awards.

TWO TO WATCH:

The Everton regular was named England Women’s Youth Player of the Year, making 14 appearances for the Under-19s and helping the team progress to the 2012 European Finals in Turkey. Liverpool-born, she joined the Blues’ Centre of Excellence at the age of eight and made her senior debut for the club in the 2010/11 UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament in August 2010. On receiving her England accolade, the left-sided defender said: “It’s nice to get recognition from the men’s team as well. It’ll help the name of women’s football to grow.” Alex has represented England at Under-15s, 17s and 19s levels, making her Under-19 debut against Maldova in September 2010.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Toni is one of the brightest young talents in women’s football.

She was named England Women’s Under-23s Player of the Year for 2012 at the inaugural FA England awards night at St George’s Park. Toni joined Everton’s Centre of Excellence at the age of 11 and made her debut for the Blues in Europe aged just 15. She earned her first full England caps last year and after being named Under 23s Player of the Year, she said: “I’m delighted. It’s a great achievement and the other two girls that were up for it have been excellent as well. Anyone would have deserved it but I’m delighted to walk away with the award. My mum will have it on the mantelpiece!”

A NEW DAWN FOR FARA FARA WILLIAMS IS ONE OF A BAND OF LIVERPOOL LADIES WHO WILL BE LINING UP AGAINST HER FORMER EMPLOYERS TONIGHT…

THE ENGLAND international spent a decade as part of the ladies set-up at Goodison but has joined her former Toffees teammates Natasha Dowie, Lucy Bronze and Becky Easton in moving to Matt Beard’s side this term. Fara says: “Leaving Everton was always going to be a tough decision. Over the years I have had other opportunities to leave and I was tempted to go and play in America but I felt I owed a lot to the manager Mo Marley. “When Mo decided to leave it made it easier for me to say, okay, this is my time to also move on.

But I didn’t particularly want to move out of the city and with the ambition Matt showed, there was no other team I would have rather signed for than Liverpool.” Fara, who has now won well over 100 caps for England, is looking forward to wearing the red shirt at the Halton Stadium and for the first time in 10 years will be hoping Everton end the game defeated. “I’ll never forget what Everton did for me as a player and in my personal life. I will always be grateful to Everton and what they did. It will be a tricky match but I want to win the game and hopefully we do.”

“I think we can definitely push Arsenal, Birmingham and Everton this year” With the Reds revamping their squad with 12 new signings, Fara feels it may take time for the team to gel whereas the bulk of the Everton squad are familiar with their pattern of play. “People will think that because Everton have lost a few players they could be easier to beat, but they’ve got core players that know their structure of play. It’s probably harder for Liverpool with all the new players to come into a new system than it is for Everton to keep the players

that they’ve got in a system they already know. But that said, I think we can definitely push Arsenal, Birmingham and Everton this year.” Fara has been impressed with the quality of the group that Reds boss Matt Beard has pieced together during the winter, but she adds: “I think it is going to take time to get to where we want to be. People are going to think Liverpool are going to win trophies straightaway. “Hopefully we will do that and as players that’s what you dream of doing, but when you’re a new squad it takes time to gel. “Team spirit is massive and at the moment it’s really strong. The foreign players inject something different to what English players are used to. Especially in training, it’s a completely different culture, and seeing how they train it’s a case of: wow, maybe we need to give a little bit more. So that’s been really good. “Hopefully we will gel quicker than people expect and gain trophies this year. If not, we’ve certainly got a good group of girls who definitely can achieve things in years to come.”

KITS FOR KIDS

THE SMILES on the young players’ faces were as bright as the floodlights when Reds midfielder Lucas and Warrior combined to boost the Liverpool FC Foundation’s Respect 4 All programme. Lucas was at the North Liverpool Academy as LFC’s kit supplier donated £50,000 worth of training gear to the scheme, with the Under-12, U-16 and adult participants the lucky recipients. The Respect 4 All programme is part of the Liverpool FC Foundation’s bid to support people of all ages and abilities by improving their life skills through team sport and activity. Afterwards Lucas said: “It is really important to have partners with the Foundation and Warrior is showing the very good partner they will be and already are. We’re glad to have the donation.

“They love Liverpool and to wear the Liverpool kit means a lot to them.”

“Respect 4 All is a very good project, helping a lot of kids. I’m really happy to be here and spend some time with these kids because you realise your life is very good. They work really hard to be able to play football.

IN MY LIFE AMANDA DA COSTA Liverpool’s American midfielder on selling lemonade, watching Taylor Swift and cooking up a mean jambalaya...

FAVOURITE GAME In my Sophomore year at Florida State University, we played against the University of North Carolina. UNC were everyone’s big rivals as they were 26 times national champions. We played them in a ‘black-out’ game where everyone wore black uniforms and everyone in the stands wore black and we ended up winning 3-2 with 20 seconds left in extra-time. There were 5,000 people in the stands and it was one of those really amazing all-round experiences.

BEST GOAL A lot of my most memorable memories have been at University because there was such a close connection. In my freshman year we played a National Championships semi-final against Notre Dame and I slid on to a throughball and tucked it around the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper kicked me in the chest but the goal ended up putting us through to the National Championship game so that was pretty big for me. I’m more of a playmaker so I try to rack up the assists but don’t score too many goals.

MUSIC I like all kinds of music but I usually go back to a band from the states called Atmosphere. It’s a little bit of hip-hop but more poetic. I love listening to them – it calms me down! 28

SHIRT NUMBER It’s funny that I am no.13 as I am so superstitious! I have the same routine and if anything is wrong I have to start all over again. At High School I was always no.5 but when I was playing with Varsity as an eighth grader, five was taken by the star player and so I became 13 as it was the only one left. I had a good season so I had to keep wearing 13 in line with my superstitions! I think I like it because everyone thinks it’s unlucky. It’s not that bad.

LAST CONCERT This is embarrassing but the honest answer is Taylor Swift in Florida! I went with a bunch of my team-mates at MagicJack. I love live music and I like going to restaurants or bars that have live bands.

TOP FILM These are the hardest questions! My go-to film is probably Wedding Crashers because it always makes me laugh. I like a lot of serious films too. The Boondock Saints is another good one.

OFF THE PITCH I love writing and painting. I also have a dog back home who is my pride and joy, so anything that involves her. She’s a black lab mix called Jazz and I rescued her in my second year at university. She’s the smartest dog ever and I really miss her.

ON NATASHA DOWIE W MIC CO R FO A BAKE-OFF ? OK CO U RELIEF. CAN YO I can. We sometimes have people over for dinner and I recently made something my mum always used to cook. It was a jambalaya with prawns, chorizo and rice and I made the broth from scratch. I hate to brag but it was pretty killer!

BE IF YOU WHAT WOULD YOU ER? LL WEREN’T A FOOTBA Based on what I do now, I’d probably be a personal trainer. I’m working on getting my certifications now so I can start my own business in personal health. If it was something I could wish for, I’d love to be a back-up dancer for someone really cool but that’s not realistic!

FIRST JOB When I was young my best friend and I were known for trying to build random things. We would try to build different types of lemonade stands and sit at the bottom of my driveway and sell drinks to people. My dad is an entrepreneur so I guess that’s where I got it from!

FAVOURITE PLACE I will say New York City as that is home. I don’t get to go home too often and the older I get, the more I appreciate it. When I was younger I thought it was boring but now I like going back and putting my headphones in when there’s millions of people around and not hearing them. The Museum Of Modern Art is my favourite place to go to.

FUNNIEST TEAM-MAT

E

Lillie Billson because she says the most outlandish things which cracks me up. There is always shock value to her statements!

WOULD WHICH TEAM-MATE ? BE BEST ON X-FACTOR Katrin Omarsdottir. She got a guitar recently and she’s good. She writes her own songs and has a pretty good voice as well.

SMARTEST TEAM-M

ATE

Book-smart or everday smart? In terms of book-smart I’d say Caroline Charlton because she’s in med school and works all day at the hospital or goes to school before coming to training which is admirable. I’ll go with Caroline. Liverpool Ladies
