Key injuries scuttle Shelby upset hopes Minus pair of key defenders, Tigers drop 8-0 decision to Whitehall By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer
SHELBY — Shelby entered this week optimistic about its game against West Michigan Conference contender Whitehall. The Tigers had lost to Ravenna and Oakridge, both also considered league title hopefuls, but both by only one goal, and in the case of Oakridge, the game had gone to overtime.
That changed Monday in practice when the Tigers lost two key parts of their lineup to concussions, handcuffing the Shelby defense with little time to adjust. Whitehall took advantage of the shorthanded Tigers and earned an 8-0 mercy rule win. Tigers’ defenders Sophie Clark and Holli Schlukebir both went down with concussions during Monday’s practice, torpedoing coach Pete Peterson’s hopes of having his whole lineup back

together. Shelby had just gotten Jill Mitteer back from a hip injury. “At the end of practice we lost both of them,” Peterson said. “I’m not making excuses, but it’s hard to shuffle everyone around at the end of practice and have them show up for a game in which we know the team
we’re playing is good. Losing those two, our depth just went right down the toilet.” The Tigers hung in early on despite those losses, allowing only two firsthalf goals. One of those was a fortunate goal for the visiting Vikings, coming when Kacy Jeffries lofted a
long shot towards the goal that managed to find the small amount of real estate between the outstretched grasp of keeper Brooke James and the crossbar.

Hesperia, Kent City tangle in CSAA Silver battles Panthers’ pitching dominates in sweep of Eagles; Hesperia 6-3-1 in league By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer
HESPERIA — Hesperia dominated Friday’s Central State Activities Association Silver doubleheader against Kent City, winning games by 16-4 and 11-1 margins. The Panthers (7-5-1, 6-3-1 CSAA Silver) trailed in game one, 2-0, in the third inning, but tied it in the bottom of the frame and then exploded for 14 runs in the fourth to earn the win by mercy rule. Gage Balkema had three hits for Hesperia in the opener, driving in three runs. Bobby Castillo and Hunter Dickinson also brought in three runs each, and Gavin Schmitz had a pair of hits. Zach Young pitched all five innings, striking out four and allowing seven hits.
Hesperia’s momentum carried into game two, where it scored seven times over the first three innings. The Panthers scored four times in the fifth to again end the game early. Dickinson had two hits

Kent City bats too much for Hesperia in high-scoring softball sweep By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer
HESPERIA — Kent City pounded Hesperia Friday in a Central State Activities Association Silver twinbill, 15-2 and 21-5. The visiting Eagles stormed out to an 11-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener, and Hesperia (6-7, 4-6 CSAA Silver) could never recover. Hesperia had three hits and commit-
