Carl Fuehring named Joan Glover NAF Royale Parade Grand Marshal Golden Township farmer Carl Fuehring has been named Grand Marshal of the Joan Glover NAF Royale Parade Saturday, June 11. Fuehring was born in Hart Township near Crystal Lake in the area known as “Little Switzerland.” He grew up learning about raising tart cherries, Christmas trees and asparagus. After graduating with a teaching degree from Michigan State University, Carl

and his wife, Pat, returned to Oceana County with their young family. Fuehring's first summer job was picking asparagus and he attributes his success to his friend Johnny Tovar, who taught him the “fine art of profitably and comfortably picking this tender crop.” Fuehring is the host of the annual NAF Farm Tour (see page 12 for more details), which is a festival favorite.

Farm tour to showcase asparagus harvest
Get up close and personal with the National Asparagus Festival’s star attraction, asparagus, and see how it's grown Saturday, June 11. The ever-popular Asparagus Farm Tour, sponsored by Pixel Grafix Studio, will depart from the NAF Information Center at NAF Office, 16 S. State St., in downtown Hart. Passengers will be loaded onto a bus at 9:45 a.m. and the tour leaves at 10 a.m. Space on the farm tour bus is limited and maps to the farm will be available for those who are unable to secure a seat on the bus. Golden Township farmer and 2016 Joan Glover NAF Royale Parade Grand Marshal Carl Fuehring
will host the 45 to 60 minute tour. Fuehring will discuss how asparagus is picked and how fast it can grow. He will also field questions about farming asparagus. Longtime Oceana County resident and former Mrs. Asparagus Stacia Erickson is the tour guide and offers many interesting facts and stories on the bus ride to the farm. The tour will showcase workers harvesting asparagus and provide the opportunity to talk with growers about their part in the asparagus industry. There is no charge to take part in the farm tour, however, donations are accepted.
