Mary and John Barker

Welcome to Pentwater

Every newcomer to Pentwater can tell you how, when and why they came here. Whether they have been here for 10 months or 10 years, they all tell slightly different stories of how they came to love this place. The natural beauty of the lakes, the beach and the rolling dunes are, of course, a natural draw, but the unique flavor of a smaller resort beach town that not everyone has discovered, gives Pentwater newcomers a compelling shared secret. “This is a special place.” For the Barker family, the discovery of Pentwater came from a notice that the local library needed a new director. When you take a new job, you don’t just consider the job alone without considering where you are going to live, and when we saw what Pentwater looked like, we knew we wanted to be here. As we discovered more about our new community, it didn’t take long to discover the friendliness of its people and a sincere sense of welcoming and some of its marvelous resources for a small community. We have never seen a place where you can borrow a free community bicycle, including a helmet. We have also never seen a community resource like the Pentwater Artisan Learning Center where you can do woodworking, welding, pottery, arts, crafts and much

more. Although I’ve been a librarian for more than 31 years, I’ve never felt so welcome and supported by a library board that is so conscientious in assuring the best service to all of the library’s patrons. Now I will be overseeing a project to revamp the library to become more relevant to the modern needs of library patrons with a bit more emphasis on technology while still preserving what makes libraries appealing to traditional readers. In my previous library jobs, I have both revamped an older library and started a new one, but the Pentwater Township Library is going to become the shared vision of a unique community of people with varied backgrounds and differing tenures. A welcoming community expects and deserves a welcoming library, and as we select the firms that will be involved in the project, we will keep that in mind. And next year the village will be celebrating its sesquicentennial with a newly improved township library that traces its history back to Feb. 12, 1855. Drop in to the library and share your story with us. How did you discover Pentwater and our library? – Mary Barker

‘Be Nice’ Barb Davidson is dedicated to taking positive steps to save livesaffected by mental health issues BY AMANDA DODGE PTW WRITER

At 85 years young, Barb Davidson is the epitome of a pillar of strength. Don’t let her five foot frame fool you, her spirit, drive and determination could fill a room. However, Davidson has been waging an internal battle for the better part of her life. “I’ve had depression for 40 years with suicidal tendencies,” she openly states. “I’m on medication and have even seen a therapist. You can’t just pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Your thinking is wrong. You feel like you are a burden. You feel worthless, like nobody cares. It shouldn’t be that way.” Thirty years ago, her doctor asked her if she wanted to kill herself. Her honest, simple reply was “Yes.” Her faith, an open line of communication, family support, and eight different medications later she is overcoming the darkness.“He saved my life that day, when he asked me that,” she said. “It’s hereditary. I didn’t know what was happening to me. My brother said ‘you’re going to a doctor or I’m going to take you by the hair of the head.’ My brother has it too.” Her openness on this topic has increased tenfold since tragedy struck her

tight-knit family just last year. On March 27, 2015 her oldest son, Wayne Elhart, 60, succumbed to the depression he had tried so hard to battle for so long and took his own life. “He was in a lot of despair, and in his mind it was the only way to stop the pain,” Davidson said, adding that she knew something was wrong with her son in the time leading up to his death. She knows now, more than most, how important it is to talk openly about mental health issues, as they are so often swept under the rug. “You have to get it out in the open and talk about it. Keeping it in makes it 10 times worse,” she said. “He left us, not a note, but verses from Romans. I found Romans underlined. That

was his message. He got a Bible from a friend the previous Monday before he passed on.” She noted one of the underlined verses was Romans 8:1 “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Her mission now is to be proactive in preventing suicide amongst all ages. According to the World Health Organization, a person commits suicide every 40 seconds, globally. “Wayne left us with a purpose. There is a reason, that is what I believe and that is what I need to believe,” Davidson said. That purpose has turned into the Wayne Elhart Be Nice Memorial Fund. Davidson’s youngest son, Jeff Elhart, has been the forerunner in this endeavor. Jeff is the owner Elhart Automotive Campus in Holland, which has been in business for over 50 years and was started by Wayne and Jeff’s father, Ken Elhart. The business then sold to Wayne and then to Jeff. “Jeff was trying to come up with an acronym, when Christy (Buck), executive director of the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan, came up with just ‘Be Nice.’ It’s simple,” Davidson said. Davidson is often bedecked in the words “Be NICE,” and it’s obvious the words Be Nice are more than just a saying to her and her family; it’s a mission, a

JUNE 7 - JUNE 21

sense of purpose and a life saving tool. “I try to carry him with me,” she said. Be NICE stands for: Notice, Invite, Challenge and Empower. “Jeff took the initiative to fund and refund the ‘Be Nice’ program. We want it to go on for five years. We are in partnership with the community foundations of both Oceana and Mason counties. We pay for half of the program costs, and the schools pay the other half,” she explained. “After the initial start-up cost, the subsequent years’ costs go down significantly.” She added that “Be Nice” is age specific for kindergarten through 12th grade. “We have it here in Pentwater and in Holland, Zeeland and Mercy Hospital. Businesses are really picking it up,” she noted. ““I took the ‘Be Nice’ course. It is about eight hours. I asked the kids (at Pentwater) about it and they say it is so important and needs to go on every year. The kids have told me that bullying at Pentwater Schools is down to null.“ “The kids get it,” Davidson said. “It can’t just be the kids. It has to go from the bottom up to the top. There is a lot of stigma that needs to be challenged and changed.” Looking for warning signs is a great tool to learn and utilize, she said. She then noted her son’s hobbies. She said that Wayne tried collecting Petoskey Stones. She then motioned to a nearby table at the Pentwater Artisan Learning Center. “Those are his things he

bought to create art with. He just lost interest.” “We’ve always been boaters. He said he just wanted to get away from the hubbub of Holland. I knew something with that too. Also, they had a place in Aspen,

care of everything. He e-mailed me just days before his death and told me how lucky we are to have Jeff to get things done. “I didn’t hear from him the day he died, but on the day before. I saw changes, he was always so

mitting suicide. Some get good help, some are turned away. I was very fortunate to get the doctor I had. He was a friend of Wayne’s.” “I call it the pit or the barrell and you keep trying to climb out on your own, what’s the sense in it.

“This has been very healing

for me. We are saving lives,”

Colo. He’d take 60 days off to ski each year. Last year, he didn’t go, he had lots of excuses. He just stopped going out.” She also said that when he sold the business to Jeff he noted that he was unable to talk with dealers anymore, he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. “Wayne knew in his heart of hearts that his brother would take

funny, but he grew quiet. All of those things are signs. We should have talked about it. We are going on with life as he would want us to,” she said. Davidson added that when she needed help, she told her doctor and Wayne did not. She wants others to know that they can talk to someone, they can get help. “Look at how many veterans are com-

Wayne just couldn’t get out from the bottom of the barrell.” Davidson said that when Wayne was buried, the family buried a box with him that they each put things into. “Jeff wrote down 11 things he felt guilty about and buried those things in the box. It

G OVERNMENT Pentwater This Week

Lake improvement board to meet Thursday, June 9

Pentwater to go forward with channel mouth dredging BY JOHN CAVANAGH PTW WRITER

PENTWATER — Through the course of three votes at a special meeting June 3, the Pentwater Village Council approved accepting a $17,884 Michigan Waterways grant to dredge the mouth of the Pentwater Lake channel at Lake Michigan. In the first vote, council waived its bid policy after Councilman Don Palmer raised concerns about having only one $55,775 quote to perform the work. That was approved in a 5-2 vote with council members Jared Griffis, Norm Shotwell, April Watkins, Bill Maxwell and village President Juanita Pierman voting yes, and Palmer and Dan Hoekstra voting no. The second vote was to award the bid to M.C.M. Marine of Sault St. Marie as it will have crews performing dredging work at nearby harbors and the village could save on deployment costs. That vote also passed 5-2 with Pierman, Griffis, Hoekstra, Watkins and Shotwell voting yes, and Palmer and Bill Maxwell voting no. The final vote was to accept the waterways grant and it was unanimously approved. Prior to taking action, Pierman explained that she, along with village harbor research committee chairman David Roseman, had a lengthy conference call with state and Army Corp of Engineers representatives. Pierman said the idea of doing a “prop wash” by placing a tug or barge in the channel and using its engines to blow the sand bar into the lake was constantly rejected by Department of Environmental Quality representatives as it could dam4 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

age fish spawning beds. Roseman added that even through the lake level is currently high, the depth of the lake at the channel’s entrance is approximately 7 feet and sailboats could bottom out their keels or rudders if entering the channel during heavy seas. He said the lake level is currently 2 feet above the low water datum, and estimated at a minimum M.C.M. would have to dredge the entrance to a 9-foot depth. Even though 9-foot depth would be the minimum, Roseman expects M.C.M. to dredge deeper, making the overall depth approximately 12 feet when completed. Much of the discussion centered around other entities financially contributing to the project. The village could be on the hook for $37,891 if no financial assistance is received and the money would come from the village fund balance. Pierman said the Pentwater Lake Improvement Board has set aside $8,000 per year since 2012, but did not know if the lake improvement board would approve the full $32,000 for this project. The improvement board is scheduled to meet June 9. Roseman said there’s $21,000 to $22,000 in donations, but he prefer to save that money for a “rainy day.” He did agree to explore using some of the money on this project. Others questioned why Pentwater Township doesn’t contribute to harbor dredging. Roseman said it’s his understanding that the township board has been advised by its attorney that contributing to harbor dredging would be an unlawful expenditure.

The Pentwater Lake Improvement Board will meet Thursday, June 9 at 4:30 p.m. in the Pentwater Village Hall. Consultant Tony Groves of Progressive Engineering will discuss plant control, water quality monitoring and provide an update of its 2016 activities on Pentwater Lake. Joe Primozich will give a report on the “Lakes and Streams Conference” he attended recently. Information about Pentwater Lake is available at the board’s new website, www.pentwaterlakeboard.org. Information on the meeting is available by calling the board President Juanita Pierman at the Pentwater Village Office at 869-8301 or 231-343- 3776.

The Pentwater Community Food Pantry, run by the First Baptist Church in Pentwater, is proud to announce a partnership with Meijer this spring to provide much-needed hunger relief to local families through the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer’s customer-driven food pantry donation program, Simply Give. “We are excited about this opportunity to work with Meijer to help feed those in need in our communities,” First Baptist Church in Pentwater Pastor Mark Lillie said. “It’s something that anyone can get involved in and feel like they have played a part in helping provide food for those who need a little extra help,” Lillie added. Each Meijer Simply Give campaign replenishes the shelves of more than 200 food pantries in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The program encourages customers to purchase $10 Simply Give donation cards, available at the Ludington Meijer or the First Baptist Church of Pentwater. Meijer, in turn, will match every $10 donation, making it $20. And, on June 3-4, Meijer double matched each donation purchased that day, turning a $10 donation into $30. Donations are then converted into Meijer food-only gift cards and given to the food pantry. The Pentwater Community Food Pantry will benefit from donation cards purchased at the Ludington Meijer store through June 19. “We encourage community members to help us fulfill our mission of helping feed the hungry in Oceana County and surrounding communities by purchasing a Meijer Simply Give food donation card during their next shopping trip,” Lillie said. “Today’s food pantries are struggling to keep up with the flood of requests they receive daily,” Meijer Spokeswoman Christina Fecher said. “The Simply Give program is a way for Meijer customers to partner with Meijer and support the food banks and pantries that provide food to the hungry families in the communities we serve. We certainly couldn’t do it without the support and commitment of our generous customers and team members, who stand beside

us in this effort.” The Pentwater Community Food Pantry, 101 S. Rush St., in Pentwater, is open to provide

Band boosters create ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign to purchase new music The Pentwater School Band is small, but the music it create and the contribution it make to the community is great. You’ll hear the band not just in concerts, but in parades, sporting events and community events. The band’s annual holiday craft fair raises money for instruments, repairs and support items. However, the school’s band boosters are stretched to afford new music for the bands. “As the students progress through their musical education, it’s important for them to have new challenges, keep their interest and continue to build their skills,” band booster April Watkins said. In an effort to raise money for the new musical scores, the band boosters have created a gofundme campaign, www.gofundme.com/ ptwband, with the goal of raising $1,000. “We’d like to raise $1,000 to refresh our music library over the next couple of years. A new set of music costs roughly $65-$75, so even a small contribution will go a long way to bringing a new tune to our ears,” Watkins said.

Volunteer effort to create Pentwater-Hart bicycle trail gets rolling Over the years, the idea of a Pentwater area bicycle trail has been discussed often in different forums. In June of 2015, a group of individuals began a serious initiative to make a new trail connecting Pentwater to Hart a reality. Organized by Claudia Ressel-Hodan, public meetings have been attended by interested trail supporters and a Capital Campaign Committee for the Pentwater – Hart Bicycle Trail has been formed. Ressel-Hodan says, “The goal of the Pentwater-Hart Bicycle Trail is to provide cyclists with a scenic and safe connection between the two communities. It will be a free recreational venue for visitors and residents alike and will be constructed within the right-of-way of Oceana County roads.” While the group is still awaiting formal approval from the Oceana County Road Commission, the initiative has already garnered the support of local governments, including the Village of Pentwater, Pentwater Township and the City of Hart, along with others. Perhaps most significantly, The Community Foundation for Oceana County has brought its talent to the project, viewing it as a financially sustainable recreational venue that will contribute to the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. “Our most pressing issue is raising needed funds for an initial survey required for review by the road commission,” said Ressel-Hodan. “While we anticipate MDOT and other state funds will cover most of the construction of the trail, we need private donations to cover the survey, which will cost approximately $5,000.” The 5.1-mile trail will begin near the intersection of Wayne and Longbridge roads in Pentwater Township and will end where it enters the City of Hart, near Tyler Road. From that point, cyclists will follow stamped pavement to connect with the William Field Memorial HartMontague Bike Trail at Water Street. The total fundraising goal for the trail is $1.25 million to cover the cost of ground preparation and paving, signage and accessories (trash containers, rest benches). No land purchase is necessary. Grants will be solicited from private foundations and state and federal sources. The most significant grantor identified to-date is MDOT. Plans also include creating a “Friends JUNE 7 - JUNE 21

of the Pentwater-Hart Bicycle Trail,” modeled after other, similar groups. Any funds raised in excess of the goal will be put in a reserve fund and used for trail maintenance. Businesses, individuals and families may be interested in donations for which signs acknowledging their support will be available. The campaign committee hopes many donors will show interest in these naming opportunities. Ressel-Hodan, an avid cyclist who moved to from Florida to Pentwater in 2014, previously created Pentwater’s free bicycle use program. This program allows for the free use of bicycles located in designated racks throughout Pent-

water. The county is already well-known to cyclists as Oceana County is the birthplace of the state’s first Rails-to-Trails park, connecting Hart and Montague. In the spring those using the Hart-Montague trail are treated to the breathtaking sight of cherry and apple orchards in bloom and in late summer, trail-users are saluted by waving golden asparagus fronds. In the fall, bicyclists and roller-bladers enjoy the crunch of leaves under their wheels and the kaleidoscope of colors. The Pentwater-Hart Trail will enable the growing numbers of cyclists to enjoy such beauty. Those interested in supporting the trail can make an online donation by visiting www. oceana-foundation.org and selecting “Give” followed by “Online Giving” and comment “Pentwater-Hart Bicycle Trail.” Donations can be also be made by sending checks made payable to the Community Foundation for Oceana County (please note: Pentwater-Hart Bike Trail on the memo line) and mailed to: Community Foundation for Oceana County, P.O. Box 367, Shelby Michigan 49455. Volunteers also are needed to assist with various fundraising activities. If you would like to become involved, become a friend of the Pentwater-Hart Bicycle Trail by visiting www. pentwater-hartbiketrail.com and clicking “Take Action” to join. For more information, visit www.pentwaterhartbiketrail.com, e-mail pentwaterharttrail@ gmail.com or contact Claudia Ressel-Hodan at 231-233-9717 or Sue Squire at 616-889-4789.

celebrated the Summer Free Fishing Weekend as a way to highlight the state’s vast fishing opportunities. With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 11,000 inland lakes and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams, fishing and Michigan go hand in hand. “Michigan is home to some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, and we encour-

age everyone to take advantage of it during the Summer Free Fishing Weekend,” said DNR Director Bill Moritz. “Every year, since 1986, we’ve offered these free fishing weekends as a fun, affordable way for people to learn about one of our state’s best outdoor traditions – and the many places there are to enjoy it.”

150 years in 18 minutes

The Pentwater Historical Museum hosted its third anniversary celebration event May 28, and kicks off its 2016 visitor hours June 7. To give potential visitors an overview of what’s on display at the museum, Pentwater Historical Society members have created an 18-minute video tour of the museum. A link to the YouTube video it is now posted at the bottom of the www.pentwaterhistoricalsociety. org homepage. “We’ve got a great collection of historical artifacts, and we’re adding different ones all the time,” said museum director Ed Bigelow. “But our museum is more than a roomful of stuff. There are stories behind everything on display. “Our visitors are passionate about Pentwater,” he added, “but how much they know about our community’s history differs greatly. You often hear someone saying, ‘Oh, I remember this,’ when coming upon something familiar, but there are others who can’t draw from such personal experiences.” The new video tour is for everyone – those relatively new to Pentwater, as well as those familiar with its rich history. It provides an overview of exhibit areas, takes a closer look at some items, and tells a few stories that even those who consider themselves Pentwater veterans might not know. “The video just scratches the surface of Pentwater’s history over the past 150 years, but after viewing it, one comes away with a better understanding of the our community’s development,” said Bigelow. “We urge visitors to bring their smart phones,” said. Bigelow suggests visitors to bring their smart phones to access the video tour during trips to the museum. “While browsing the museum floor, they can hold the phone to their ear or use an earbud to listen, and pause the video when they like to take a closer look at something. It’s like having your own personal docent!”

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 was so hard for me at first, even still, a mother is a mother, your bond is different because you carried your child,” Davidson explained. “We’re at peace with Wayne’s death. We are trying to make a positive out of negative now. We’ve always been a close family, but this has brought us closer in a different way. We have nothing to hide,” The “Be Nice” mission has enabled Davidson to talk about mental health issues with children and adults, especially at Pentwater Public Schools. “This is a disease like cancer. When I talk to the kids, it is just mind boggling what they say. There is so much bullying and those awful challenges on the Internet. Some result in death. It is so good to hear kids say something positive. I tell them to put the National Suicide Prevention Hotline’s phone number into their iPhones. It’s 1-800-273-TALK (8255). They are there 24 hours a day,” she said “This has been very healing for me. We are saving lives.” Right now, they are also trying to raise money to get the program into more schools. She said that Larry Hines of Hines Corporation in Muskegon, along with Jeff, raised $250,000 to carry all Muskegon area schools through all five years of the Be NICE program. She also is looking into showing the film, “Hope Bridge” around Oceana and Mason counties. She said that Jeff and his family met the creators of the film, the Eatons, at a shared church in West Palm Beach, Fla. The film has already been shown to audiences of several hundred and has left a positive impact on suicide prevention. Davidson is campaigning for mental health awareness everywhere she goes. At the artisan center, Davidson said she works with glass, does some painting and mosaics, and knits. Davidson also added that she enjoys how the artisan center utilizes mentoring. She is helping with the center’s ArtPrize entry, a community effort, she adds. She is on the Pentwater Arts Council, volunteers with the Village of Pentwater and is currently helping with the artisan center raffle to help raise funds to buy supplies. Pitch made for dog park PENTWATER — The pitch for a dog park was presented to the Pentwater Village Council at its regular meeting April 11. Pentwater Township property owner Marilyn Steiner told council that every time she travels she tries to take notice of things in other communities that would enhance Pentwater, and this year took notice of a dog park. Steiner proposed using the village-owned parcel which has been suggested as the site for a new Pentwater Township Library. Steiner estimated it would cost $25,500 to construct the dog park complete with fence and if the property were to be developed into something else, the fence could be removed. Village President Juanita Pierman pointed that the parcel has only been discussed as a potential site for the library. She referred Steiner’s proposal to the council’s building and grounds committee. Councilman Norm Shotwell suggested that the village planning commission also be involved.
