Arrya Criscione and her parents, Patricia Primozich and Pepe Criscione
Welcome to Pentwater
Hello my name is Arrya Criscione, I’m 16 months old and I want to welcome you to my Village of Pentwater. I love living here in the village with my parents. I get to people watch, play outside, eat ice cream and take naps. What I look forward to the most are my walks through the village to see what’s happening for the day. So I am going to share this with you. I crawl up in my stroller and my dad starts a walking. I like to swing by the insurance office to say hi and flash a smile in hopes of a cracker or snack. Just so you know, this almost always works. We then stroll by the post office and take the time to smell the flowers and say hi to Fred and Cindy. Then it is onward to see Crystal at OldeWick Post, where I smell the candles and coffee and occasionally get to taste the fudge. From here we stroll by Cosmic Candy where I like to look at the bright colors and antique machines. Next stop is the Village Salon to catch up on the stories and get adored. I swing by the
bank to say hi and then head toward the water. I like to look for boats, birds and ducks as we stroll along the pier heading to the beach. It is fun to yell at them and get their attention, so sometimes you can hear me before you see me. Making it to the beach is my favorite part of my walk. Sometimes there are waves and sometimes not, however there are always a lot of people to see and talk to. Besides, who doesn’t like to put their hands and toes in the sand? I have also been known to taste the sand even though my mom says it is “icky.” Once I’ve had my fill of the beach, it’s time to walk home. I enjoy it when we end our walk by diving face first into an ice cream cone. While these are a few of my favorite things to do, there are many more in Pentwater. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I look forward to seeing you around.

Quilt Whisperer Beverly Roberts is on point to preserve memories in fabric that never unravel

BY AMANDA DODGE PTW WRITER
“Anyone who works on a quilt, who devotes her time, energy, creativity and passion to that art, learns to value the work of her hands. And as any quilter will tell you, a quilter’s quilting friends are some of the dearest, most generous, and most supportive people she knows,” Jennifer Chiaverini, American quilter and author, once penned. Beverly Roberts knows this more so than most. As her home is adorned in the work of her hands, along with the homes of her family, friends and those that happen to find her when in need of her quilting talents. A quick tour of said home, re-

veals a multitude of colors and patterns, that only comes with patience, practice and proficiency. Roberts, who didn’t begin quilting until later in life, moved to Pentwater in 1974 with her family, when her parents, Howard and Wilma
VanHaitsma purchased the Pentwater Bakery from Duke and Emily Dewyer. Roberts recalled that the Dewyers gave her parents all of their recipes as part of the sale and they even stayed with them for a month. The VanHaitsmas lived in the upstairs apartment over the bakery. In the coming years, Roberts married her high school sweetheart, Pete Roberts, and the two will celebrate 40 years of marriage next April. She and her husband leased the bakery from her parents in 1980 and ran the afternoon business, until opening their own business nearby in 1983.

They called it Pete’s Hut, located on the corner of Second and Hancock streets, which is now the home of Pet Hollywood. The name was not a play on the Pizza Hut franchise, whom even sent a lawyer to investigate that no infringement was taking place, and there was not. Pete was studying restaurant management at West Shore Community College and they wanted to open up a place of their own, and the “building actually looked like a little hut,” so it was a literal naming, Beverly recalls. That same year, another opportunity presented itself, when Howard, who was also in the drywall business outside of the bakery, offered to sell Pete his tools. The business savvy Roberts’ could not turn down his offer, and so began Roberts Drywall. Now Pete began devoting his time to the new drywall business, so Bev said she kept the pizza place running, which was a daunting task with their four children in tow, and the two youngest being under two years old. So Roberts said she turned to Pete’s brother, Pat, and asked him to help run Pete’s Hut. Roberts said that helped a lot and she turned her attention to hosting children’s parties there, where she would dress as a clown for their entertainment. In 1988, they diversified their business portfolio again, by buying three houses in Ludington and starting UOME Rentals.“We wanted a cute and funny name that people would remember,” Roberts said. After, their drywall business started to really pick up, so they decided to close the restaurant in 1990. The two had happily lived down the street, on Second and Clymer streets, from their business endeavor for 18 years. In 1994 they purchased the land where they currently live, an 80-acre parcel with an old farm house,

that they got at auction just across the county line. They then proceeded to build their dream home there. In her rarely found spare time, Roberts said that she had always liked to sew, making baby clothes while pregnant with their first son, Chris. She added that she also knitted and crocheted, being more dedicated to the latter throughout the years. In her 40s, Roberts said that she purchased a book on how to make a quilt and decided to try her hand at it. “I bought my first quilt pattern with all the material needed and a rotary cutter. I was so afraid to use that thing,” she admitted. “It took me six months to finish that first quilt and I was swept up. I had caught the quilting bug.” Roberts added that it turns out that quilting is in her genes. Her late maternal grandmother, Rosie Hepworth, was a quilter. “She always quilted and used whatever she had on hand. She made beautiful dresses from feed sacks,” Roberts said. “My mom said that if they got punished, they had to cut out squares.” Adding that during quilting bees at their church, (Rosie and her sisters) had to sit under the quilting frame and push the needle back through.

Pentwater sets hearing for street bond proposal PENTWATER — A 6 p.m. public hearing on the proposed Pentwater Village street improvement bond proposal is set for Sept. 14 at the Pentwater Friendship Center. The Pentwater Village Council approved the language to appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot at its regular meeting July 11. The village seeks to borrow up to $3.2 million for street improvements for 15 years. The millage required to pay off this debt is expected to be 2.4 ($2.40 per $1,000 of taxable value) over the next 15 years. But Village property owners are now paying 1.21 mills to rebuild the Hancock Street infrastructure, a debt that will be paid off next year. So the incremental or “new” tax would only be 1.19 mills.

A near capacity crowd gathered in the Pentwater Friendship Center Wednesday evening, July 13 to take part in the Pentwater Service Club’s “Meet the Candidates” event. The event was attended by 16 of the 19 candidates competing in the five contested county races — District 1 Oceana County Commissioner, drain commissioner, road commissioner, sheriff and treasurer. Each had up to five minutes to speak about their qualifications and the major issue they feel the winner will face. Most stayed afterwards to chat informally with voters. It’s all math,” Roberts explained. “I like to challenge myself.” When it comes to her fabric of choice, Roberts said that she likes Moda and gets a lot of her supplies from Quilted Memories in Montague. Outside of quilts, Roberts, who “loves to sew” said that she has made aprons, pot holders, wall hangings, table runners and more. She said that she has sold at craft fairs in the past on the village green in Pentwater and is currently a member of the Country Quilters in Scottville. Roberts, who thinks long and hard before deciding on the right patterns and fabrics for each of her quilts, knows how important it is to get it just right, and to personalize each quilt to make it extra special for the recipient. This has been shown in one of her more recent endeavors that has included making Memory Quilts for families out of their deceased loved

“When my mom would tell me these stories, it always intrigued me,” Roberts said. After completing her first quilt, she said that she began reading more and more quilting books and making more and more quilts. During this time, she and Pete had purchased a home in Scottville, that he said could easily be turned into a store. She liked that idea so much that in 2005, she opened The Quilters Korner at 210 N. Main Street. As Pete converted the home into her shop, they decided to purchase all of the inventory from The Needle Nook in New Era, which had been up for sale. Time at her new shop was unfortunately cut far too short, because in 2008 she received the news that she had breast cancer. In the fall of 2008, she decided to close her Quilters Korner and sold her inventory to a quilt shop in Grand Rapids. In 2010, Roberts underwent surgery for her stage three cancer, and since then, has been cancer free. However, her cancer was very aggressive and from having several lymph nodes removed due to the cancer, she now has lymphedema, but it does not slow her down one bit. She is able to do in-home treatments and her condition is very wellmanaged. In 2013, they finished out the year and closed Roberts Drywall due to her husband also battling cancer. Roberts added that she is thankful they did not have all of their busiBeverly Roberts displays a number of her quilt creations in her Summit Township home. ness eggs in one basket, so to speak. “I’m so happy we diversified due to the cancer,” she ones clothing. “I ask them not to wash the clothing and when I iron it, said. They now only maintain their rental business. When it comes to quilting, Roberts has no intentions of slowing down, their smell just fills the room and is fused into the fabric.” She continued to say that she chooses a pattern for how best their at this writing she has eight quilts in progress and has made over 300 clothing will fit together, but, “these quilts take on their own thing. I start since that first one. “I can make a quilt in a week, if I have the time,” she said. “I have learned as I have gone along through this and have asked with a pattern, and then it dictates its own,” almost as if the person who 1,000 people what to do when I went into quilting.
