Welcome to Pentwater

I’m Emily Gebhart, a graduate of Pentwater High School. I have lived in Pentwater and attended Pentwater Public Schools since I was in the second grade. I have been blessed with the opportunity to spend my youth in this inviting community, which is full of support and compassion. Growing up in Pentwater has been a very rewarding experience. Working in town at Cottage Garden Cafe, I have had the opportunity to not only meet people from our village, but also from across the state and country. We are all on a firstname basis. Pentwater is a place that allows visitors and natives to create lasting relationships, always bringing them back for more. The incredible support from the staff at Pentwater Public Schools has prepared me to venture out into the world and pursue my dreams. Because of them,

I have developed independence, learned to set and achieve goals, learned to work well with others, and much more. I will soon be going off to a college that isn’t much bigger than the school here in Pentwater in a city that is 1,000 times larger, and I could not feel more prepared. Growing up in Pentwater, we tend to take advantage of its prime location and beauty, but once we leave, we realize how lucky we are to call Pentwater home. I will no longer be in a village where everyone knows everyone, or where the beach is just a mile down the road. As saddening as that may seem, I am excited to be a part of a new community. But no matter where life takes me, Pentwater will always be in my heart, and I will always call this one-of-a-kind town my home.

PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

Corporal Baseball BY AMANDA DODGE PENTWATER THIS WEEK WRITER

Decades of family photos, achievements, hobbies, collections and m o r e adorn the walls and appliances of the Carlins’ Sand Street

home. Hal and Myrna have almost always called Pentwater home no matter how far their travels, careers and lives may have taken them. This is where it all started, at least for the two of them. However, first things first, and with Memorial Day just around the corner, it is important to note that Hal, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, is a member of a sadly increasingly smaller group of brave soldiers who are in a league of their own: those that served in World War II.

Harold “Hal” Carlin was born April 7, 1926 in Rochester, N.Y. At five years of age, his family moved to Detroit and then to Centerline, Mich., just outside the aforementioned city, when he was a freshman in high school. During high school, Carlin was a superstar on the basketball court, netting 35 points in one game. A school record that stood for 12 years, and they did not have the three point line at that time, notes Myrna. After graduating from Centerline High School, Hal was drafted into military service at age 18 in 1944. “I tried to enlist in the Air Force, but I got hit in the head with a baseball that day and couldn’t read the chart,” Carlin said, lamenting that his eyesight has never been the same. “So my dad took me to my appointment with

the Army and he and I both expected that he would be my ride home, except they put me on a bus and told me to wave good bye.” Carlin was on his way to Fort Hood in Texas for basic training. From there he was sent to the Philippine Islands “to mop up.” Though it was towards the end of World War II, Carlin saw combat as he fought in the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines. Miraculously, he was one of three men in his troop that was not shot or wounded by the end of the war. Carlin served as troop clerk and attained the rank of Corporal during his military tenure. After the Treaty of Missouri was signed, he was off to Japan, but the ship he was being transported on could not get close to the country because of the numerous mines in the water, Carlin explained.“A Japanese captain led us around the mines and we got to Japan and occupied it.” Carlin said it was strange that the Japanese had surrendered, and here he was in Tokyo and saw Japanese locals going around on bikes as if it were just another day. Carlin said he was stationed in Japan from 1945 to 1946. During that time he went to Osaka and played baseball for the Army team in the same stadium that was used to film the Tom Selleck movie, “Mr. Baseball,” almost 50 years later. With the war over and things getting somewhat back to normal, Carlin said he was offered two choices: stay in the military or go home. “I made the choice to go home after that.” So it was back to Centerline and then off to Central Michigan University for four years to get his teaching degree with a major in social

studies and physical education. Myrna noted that during Hal’s time at CMU he was regarded as a basketball star along with the other veterans that had come back and were almost undefeated. She said they only lost one game because they had been out enjoying themselves a bit too much the night before. Hal added that a large photo of himself holding a basketball hung in the CMU basketball arena from 1946 to 1970. Hal lettered in both basketball and baseball at CMU. Upon his graduation in 1950, he played baseball for the House of David for one year. Towards the end of that time, he was notified that he had landed his first ever teaching job on the opposite side of the state where he had grown up, in a beautiful place called Pentwater. He taught seven hours a day at Pentwater in the high school and coached baseball and basketball after school. While teaching, Hal made friends with his neighbor across the street who was on the school board. One day his neighbor’s daughter was home from attending Western Michigan University and she and her friend decided they wanted to go meet the new coach at Pentwater. This was August of 1952 and her name was Myrna. “Hal played golf with my dad and he had a convertible,” Myrna said.“He called me up and asked to go on a group date to Ludington.” Hal smiled as he remembered that his convertible broke down by Kibby Creek and they had to walk home. “Dad helped get the car back,” Myrna said.

G OVERNMENT Pentwater This Week

Pentwater begins to explore village-wide street improvement project BY JOHN CAVANAGH PENTWATER THIS WEEK WRITER

PTW Photo by Andrew Skinner

PENTWATER — The wheels were put into motion Monday, April 11 by the Pentwater Village Council as it begins developing ways to pay for a village-wide street improvement project. In his services committee report, Councilman Norm Shotwell said council might target this November or next spring to present a millage request to voters. In the meantime, he plans to work with the committee and other village organizations to develop ideas and get the word out on the village street improvement plan. According to a press release issued by the village, the Wade Trim engineering firm was retained in May 2015 to assess the village streets. In September it concluded that 70 percent of the village streets needed resurfacing, repair or reconstruction over the next five years with the cost estimated at $3.2 million. “We’ll continue to seek grant monies,” village Manager Rob Allard said in the release. “But we don’t expect to get much, if any, because federal and state monies just aren’t there for local streets. The problem is ours and we’ll have to deal with it.” In addition to Shotwell, the services committee includes Councilmen Don Palmer and Jared Griffis. It has moved cautiously, the release said, reaching out to engineering, legal and bonding experts to develop a sensible plan. It has developed a working group which include

Allard, Village President Juanita Pierman, Kathleen Hamilton, Terry Valenzano, Mark Benner, Ron Beeber and engineering and bonding representatives. Shotwell and Allard said at a May 16 public forum that most streets would be sealed, rehabbed or reconstructed in a coordinated effort over five years. To pay for the street improvements, the working group has recommended voter approval of two municipal bond proposals. One would be to renew for 15 years the existing 1.21 mill levy approved by voters in 1996 for the Hancock Street improvements, which will be paid off next year. A second 1.19 mill levy, if approved, would increase the property taxes of a $150,000 home by approximately $90 per

Monton named new village attorney PENTWATER — Brian Monton of Prince and Monton PLC of Hart was named the new Pentwater Village attorney by the Pentwater Village Council May 9. Monton will succeed long-time attorney Gary Nicholson who retired at the end of March. The village received more than 10 application for the position and interviewed Monton and Hart attorney Eric Fox. The firm’s appointment will run through the end of the village fiscal year at the end of next March. The village council makes its appointments annually. The village will pay a $1,000 per month retainer for general legal services. Fees for extraordinary legal services, including litigation, will be billed at $180 per hour for an attorney/partner and $60 per hour for a legal assistant. 4 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

year, according to the release. “Our recommended plan is the best longterm approach to the problem rather than a short-sighted band-aid which would ultimately cost more,” Shotwell said in the release.“Poor streets are less safe. They are hazardous to bicyclists and pedestrians. They can damage motor vehicles. Good streets help maintain property values and reflect the positive image we all want Pentwater to have.” A number of informational meetings have taken place in recent weeks and a formal public hearing is being planned for sometime this fall.

Hancock Street to feature free WiFi

PENTWATER — Residents and visitors to the Village of Pentwater will soon be able to stay connected to the outside world — at least in a limited area. Pentwater Downtown Development Authority member Claudia Ressel-Hodan told the Pentwater Village Council May 9 that WiFi will be available in the downtown area this summer. Due to budget concerns, the wireless communication system will only be available along Hancock Street from approximately Second to Fifth streets, Claudia Ressel-Hodan said, but will include the village marina. She said it’s possible that the WiFi’s range could extend further where there are no obstructions. The system is not expected to work within Hancock Street businesses. MAY 24 - JUNE 7

PENTWATER — Even with high Lake Michigan water levels, the area in and immediately in front of the Pentwater channel is once again starting to become shallow. Pentwater Harbor Research Committee Chairman David Roseman told the Pentwater Village Council May 9 that he recently determined that some areas in and immediately in front of the channel are 7-foot deep or less. He said the more shallow lake depths might make the channel unavailable for some boats to enter, depending on lake conditions. Since the channel area hasn’t been dredged since 2012, Roseman said the Pentwater Lake Improvement Board has $30,000 for dredging. Donations for dredging totalled $21,016, Roseman said, but he’d like to see that money saved for a “rainy day.” He also said state Representative Jon Bumstead has been in contact with the Department of Natural Resources to see if any state money for dredging might be available. Village President Juanita Pierman pointed out that keeping the channel clear was an Army Corps of Engineers responsibility for a number of years, and then that responsibility got dumped onto the village. She also said the village needs to develop partners when it comes to dredging the channel as it is the only Lake Michigan boating access in Oceana County. “I have contended for a long time that this is not just a Pentwater problem,” Pierman said.

“One village alone can’t do this type of dredging.” Roseman then outlined a scenario where a barge could be parked in the channel, throttle

up its engines and blow the sand out of the way. He added that he also thinks it’s a Pentwater problem and they need to solve it themselves.

The Pentwater Community Food Pantry, run by the First Baptist Church in Pentwater, is proud to announce a partnership with Meijer this spring to provide much-needed hunger relief to local families through the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer’s customer-driven food pantry donation program, Simply Give. “We are excited about this opportunity to work with Meijer to help feed those in need in our communities,” First Baptist Church in Pentwater Pastor Mark Lillie said. “It’s something that anyone can get involved in and feel like they have played a part in helping provide food for those who need a little extra help.” Lillie added. Each Meijer Simply Give campaign replenishes the shelves of more than 200 food pantries in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The program encourages customers to purchase $10 Simply Give donation cards, available at the Ludington Meijer or the First Baptist Church of Pentwater. Meijer, in turn, will match every $10 donation, making it $20. And, on June 3-4, Meijer will double match each donation purchased that day, turning a $10 donation into $30. Donations are then converted into Meijer food-only gift cards and given to the food pantry. The Pentwater Community Food Pantry will benefit from donation cards purchased at the Ludington Meijer store through June 19. “We encourage community members to help us fulfill our mission of helping feed the hungry in Oceana County and surrounding communities by purchasing a Meijer Simply Give food donation card during their next shopping trip,” Lillie said. “Today’s food pantries are struggling to keep up with the flood of requests they receive daily,” Meijer Spokeswoman Christina Fecher said. “The Simply Give program is a way for Meijer customers to partner with Meijer and support the food banks and pantries that provide food to the hungry families in the communities we serve. We certainly couldn’t do it without the support and commitment of our generous customers and team members, who stand beside

us in this effort.” The Pentwater Community Food Pantry, 101 S. Rush St., in Pentwater, is open to provide

PTW file photo by Andrew Skinner

Pentwater veterans are gearing up for a weekend full of activities that concludes with honoring those who served our country and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice doing so. According to Pentwater VFW 6017 Commander and Marine Gunnery Sergeant James Carlson, veterans will be selling poppies from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 28 in downtown Pentwater, followed by a memorial service at Whiskey Creek at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, May 29, the Boy Scouts will host a breakfast at the VFW post from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost for the breakfast is $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 5 to 12. The allyou-can-eat style breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy, juice, milk and coffee. The Pentwater Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m., Monday, May 30 with line-up from 9-10 a.m. across the street from the Baptist Church on First Street. All veterans, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are encouraged to participate. Carlson asks that veterans dress in their uniforms if they are able to. He explained that the parade begins as they march down to the Village Marina and have a ceremony to honor the Navy dead. Then the veterans will lead the parade over to the village green, where guest speaker Mary Marshall will address those in attendance. After the ceremony and flag raising on the green, the procession will head to the Pentwater Township Cemetery for the final ceremony and flag raising of the parade. Each ceremony location

will include a 21-gun salute and Taps will be played. The public is welcome to all of these ceremonies and is asked to follow the veterans to each location. Carlson said that parade and ceremonies will be followed by a 1 p.m. no-cost potluck at the VFW

Hall for veterans and their families. Those who attend the events will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for two separate raffles that are set to help the VFW Hall upgrade its refrigerators and adding new storage to the post. Prizes for the first are all

cash denominations, starting at $500 and tickets are $1 each or $5 for six tickets. A prize for the second raffle is either $575 in cash or an AR15 Bushmaster rifle, and the tickets are $5 each. The drawings will take place in the fall. MAY 24 - JUNE 7

The evening’s second feature will be author and professor at West Shore College Sharon Bluhm. Bluhm resides in the Manierre Dawson Vacation home just north of Pentwater. The Pentwater Historical Society will celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the opening of its Rutledge Street museum starting at noon Saturday, May 28. The museum is a destination point for visitors, a gathering place for the community and a unique display of “Pentwater Pride.” The museum located in the former First Baptist Church of Pentwater building at 85 S. Rutledge St. opened to the public May 31, 2014. The building is a genuine historic site that dated from 1896 and couldn’t have been a more perfect venue in which to display Pentwater’s heritage, housing a large collection of Pentwater artifacts and memorabilia. This year, the historical society has some newly acquired “old” signs from various businesses along with a large salt and pepper shaker collection – featuring over 800 pieces. Also on display this summer, the museum has, on loan from a private collection, old milk bottles from Oceana and Mason counties. All of these

collections and pictures are translated into a compelling story of area history. The newly released Pentwater Historical Museum video will also be played throughout the afternoon. The video, which will be used to help promote the museum, was a collaboration of work by Claudia Ressel-Hodan and Ron Beeber. Outside the museum, the historical society

will be serving coffee, tea, cake, cookies and some old fashioned popcorn. A “Tin Can Raffle” with lots of exciting gifts will also take place during the celebration. The historical society looks forward to seeing residents from across Oceana County as well as area visitors to this free event. Children are always welcome.

Pentwater business owner Colleen Plummer passes away SHORELINE MEDIA WRITERS

Colleen Plummer of Pentwater, known to many as the owner of the Antler Bar, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 21. Sue Silvis, who described herself and Colleen as “best friends for 40 years,” said she’ll remember her as a caring, compassionate person. “She was pretty awesome,” Silvis said. “She was a loving, wonderful mother. She tried to do her best Plummer for her community as well as her friends and family. She pretty much thought of a lot of people other than herself first.” Silvis said Plummer’s thoughts were always consumed by her kids, her friends and her community. Silvis said she remembers boiling eggs with Plummer for the first Easter egg hunt on the village green. Plummer also had a strong sense of right and wrong. Plummer was a long-time referee and was due to receive a 20-year-award from the Michigan High School Athletic Association this spring, according to Mason County Prosecuting Attorney and fellow soccer referee Paul Spaniola. “Games with Colleen were always fun,” Spaniola said. “I enjoyed reffing with her for 20 years. She was one of few women referees in this area.” Karen Smith of the Pentwater Chamber of Commerce said Plummer was an energetic volunteer. “She was a friend to many people and she was my friend,” Smith said about Plummer, who worked with her on many events. She said Plummer also headed up Pentwater’s St. Patrick’s Day parade and would decorate for Mardi Gras parties. “She loved Mardi Gras,” Smith said, adding that Plummer came from Louisiana. The two also worked together for years on the Christmas celebration at the village green. “She was involved in many activities and she will be terribly missed,” Smith said. MAY 24 - JUNE 7

CORPORAL BASEBALL

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 “But we needed a wrecker,” Hal interjected. “The car was out of gas.” The two married in December of that same year. They lived in Pentwater for two years, then were told that Lake Orion was only hiring veterans to teach at its schools, so they moved back across the state and stayed for over 30 years while still maintaining a home in Pentwater. During those 30-plus years, Hal coached basketball and baseball as he had done at Pentwater. In 1968 Hal became the school’s athletic director and eventually assistant principal, two posts he held until his retirement in 1981. Myrna was no slouch during this time, as she helped to found and teach at Holy Cross Lutheran School. A boring retirement did not sound good to the Carlins, so they packed up their motorhome and wet to Florida. While in the panhandle state Hal got a job with the New York Mets in 1987, running their basic training during spring training for years following. He would work with 200 athletes and nine different teams each season. In 1999, Hal retired from the Mets, although they wanted him to move to New York and stay on with them, Hal and Myrna decided it was time to get back to Pentwater, permanently.

14 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

The two had owned the Nickerson Inn for approximately 20 years, and had sold the Inn in the early 1990s. Hal was Commodore of the Pentwater Yacht Club in 1987, and the Carlins were members of the PYC for almost 50 years. A second retirement still could not get the Carlins to sit on the bench. Hal worked at WalMart as a greeter and a payroll clerk and Myrna worked at Max and Chloe’s. Hal decided to stop working just three years ago, when he lost a leg. However, his military service continues to be lauded, two years ago as he was invited to go on an Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. Hal said he was picked up at home and taken to Ferris State University, and then they flew out of Grand Rapids. Hal visited the WWII Memorial with fellow veterans, Art Susan, Bob Lorenz and the now

late Denzil Hepworth “It was really interesting,” Hal said. “It’s a very big wall.” Speaking of memorials, Hal said that there is information about his troop in the Philippines and also being the first into Japan during peace time, inside the building at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. His service and the service of others is very important to the Carlins. “Hal rides in the Memorial Day parade every year and he wears his uniform, the shirt still fits,” Myrna said. The Carlins days are now filled with their wonderful memories and each other, along with visits from their four children: Susan, Sandra, Michael and Randall, and their families which include six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. They also have their cats and dog and a lifetime of love and adventure.

Fire destroys Dockside restaurant Investigators determine fire originated in van parked nearby

PTW file photo by Andrew Skinner

A late night Sept. 28 fire destroyed the Dockside Restaurant and Pizzeria, 401 S. Hancock St., in downtown Pentwater. Investigators determined that the fire originated inside a van that belonged to the owners of the restaurant. The van was parked on Fourth Street near the building. The actual cause of the fire will be listed as undetermined, according to the report from the Oceana County Sheriffs Office. The intensity of the heat of the burning van spread the fire to the building, Pentwater Police Chief Laude Hartrum said. The popular business owned by Angie LoveDarrow and Jeff Darrow for the past five years was a total loss. In addition to destroying the restaurant the fire also caused minor damage to the adjacent condominiums. Angie Love-Darrow and her husband, Jeff,

were in the lower level of the building when she said they heard what she described as a “bang-bang” sound. Love-Darrow said she went to the main level to investigate and noticed that their van parked outside the building was on fire. Love-Darrow said she ran back downstairs, got her husband and they evacuated the building, which was insured. “Definitely did not see that coming,” LoveDarrow said the day after the fire. “Reality kind

of bites once in awhile.” She said the van had been parked there for seven hours, and they hadn’t had any problems with it. Fire crews from Pentwater, Hart and ShelbyBenona in Oceana County along with departments from Riverton and Pere Marquette townships in Mason County were dispatched to the scene, including Pere Marquette Township’s ladder unit.
