Welcome to Pentwater
As graduates of Pentwater Public Schools and residents of Pentwater since childhood, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our town. Since we have grown up here we are incredibly familiar with both the town and school environment, and wanted to share some of our favorite aspects of Pentwater. We have been involved in a variety of different high school activities from athletics to dual-enrollment at West Shore Community College. One of the most exciting parts of growing up in Pentwater was being involved in our school homecoming festivities. Watching the gym fill to maximum capacity with students, staff, alumni and community members, jamming out to the pep band, and covering every wall of the gym in posters is so much fun. Another benefit Pentwater school offers is the strong sense of community, especially among classmates. We have been attending school with some of our fellow seniors for well over a decade, which has allowed us to grow amazingly close. Attending a small school provides us many advantages, one of which is the strong sense of community. Community is also something our town prides itself on. Everything this town has to offer is so welcoming. If you are looking for a church away from home
we have many to offer; Centenary United Methodist, Saint James Episcopal and St. Vincents Catholic. However the one that holds a special place in our heart is the First Baptist of Pentwater. Pastor Mark Lille and his wife, Melanie, have always been so kind and loving to Pentwater students, they welcome high school students to their home every Friday during the school year for a delicious lunch. Beyond churches, our businesses and business owners have surely worked their hardest to offer all people, whether they’re locals or tourists, a place in which they feel welcome. From our candy store, to our cafès, to our galleries, Pentwater has something to offer everyone. I still remember when I was much younger, constantly begging my parents to take me to the candy store, and just being lost in the giant selection. Now that I’m older, I’ve definitely learned to appreciate a wider scope of businesses. Though the candy store will always be a favorite of mine, I have become a dedicated patron of our various cafès and restaurants. We can’t forget the beach! Our beach is one of the most visited attractions Pentwater has to offer. Whether sunning on the sand, walking the shoreline, playing Continued on page 19 PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

Park your pop up, pitch your tent and get ready for summer with Gabe and Pat Lajko By Mary Beth Crain PTW Writer It seems appropriate to open this story with a bit of a twist on the famous 16th century English ballad, “Now is the Month of Maying.” “Now is the month of Maying When merry lads are playing And Pat and Gabe are saying, Welcome to Mears State Park!” That’s Pat and Gabe Lajko, to those who aren’t familiar with the campground that locals and visitors flock to every year in Pentwater. “Then spring clad all in gladness Doth laugh at winter’s sadness…” Well, sort of. It’s a particularly blustery afternoon at the park, with gusty, chilly winds rattling the trees and a gray sky frowning over the turbulent lake. But
that’s Michigan, right? A cold day in May is nothing new, and it certainly isn’t going to stop Pat and Gabe from getting the park ready for the season. “We’ve been hosts here for the last six years,” Pat notes.“We really enjoy it. Every day is a different adventure.” A few days later, the weather is more hospitable. The sun is shining, the air is warming up, and some of the season’s first campers are beginning to drift in. Sitting on a bench at campsite 81, where their fifth wheel is parked, the Lajkos relax over coffee, and greet some familiar faces—two mallards, who waddle over to them with complete fearlessness. “Oh, sweetheart, I don’t have anything for you today,” Pat laments. “Not even a crust of bread.” The mallards continue to stand there, expectant. “They’re so cute,” Pat laughs. “We usually have May 23 - June 13
something to feed them. But today the cupboards are bare.” The Lajkos are a striking couple. Pat is tall, blonde and attractive, and, in her jeans, boots and Michigan DNR vest, looks like she was born and raised in a campground. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. “I never camped until we started coming here, years ago,” she admits. “We started out with a tent, and have worked our way up to our fifth wheel. But we don’t camp anywhere else.” Gabe is a study in contrasts. A former truck driver for Coca Cola, he seems, on one hand, to be the typical guy’s guy, with a love for hunting and fishing, a slow, thoughtful way of talking, and a serious work ethic. But then you notice— well, you can’t help but notice—two unusual aspects to his appearance. The first is his thick, white handlebar mustache, a male fashion statement that was all the rage when Theodore Roosevelt was president, but that’s rarely been seen since. Why did he adopt it? “I really don’t know,” he shrugs.“I’ve had it al-
most as long as I can remember. I just wanted to grow one.” “He had it when I met him,” says Pat. “I’ve never seen him without it. I don’t know what he’d look like.” “Not to be facetious or anything, but I honestly don’t know if I’d recognize myself if I shaved it off,” Gabe muses, in all seriousness. And then there’s his pierced left ear, which sports three silver rings. “I guess I’ve had these for around 20 years,” he estimates. “There’s no big reason behind it. I got pierced for one earring and then, I don’t know, I got a few more. Just liked the look.” The Lajkos recently moved to Pentwater from Livonia, Mich. where Pat was born and raised. Gabe grew up in Dearborn, Mich. and they met while both were working at Coca Cola in Detroit. Gabe retired from Coke five years ago; Pat left much earlier for a new job—driving a school bus for Livonia Public Schools, which she did for 20 years. And then, they made a big decision. “It’s always been a dream of ours, to move to Pentwater,” Pat acknowledges. “The people are so friendly and welcoming.” “We’ve always had the mindset that one day we’d be here,” Gabe concurs. “It’s like we’ve always belonged here. “ They bought a house and made the official move during Homecoming Weekend 2016, to a ranch home on Morris Street, and have been busy remodeling the residence ever since, and working on landscaping ideas. “We love to garden,” says Pat. “We spent 30 years gardening in Livonia.” And it was serious business. “We were chosen to be on the Livonia Garden Walk,” she proudly notes. Now she’s preparing to utilize her skills in a somewhat new environment. “We have a lot of deer in our yard every morning, so we’re doing research on deer resistant plants.” How did the couple discover Pent-
water? “I was a transport driver,” Gabe recalls. “I brought concentrates of Coke syrup to Grand Rapids. I’d talk to the guys there, about hunting and fishing, and they all said, ‘You have to go to Pentwater.’” So the Lajkos decided to check it out. “We started coming to Pentwater and immediately fell in love with it,” Pat remembers. “At first we stayed at the Nickerson Inn. Then we discovered the campground. We’d never camped before, so we borrowed a tent and stayed at campsite 21. It was so much fun that the next time we rented a pop up. Then we moved up the line, to a travel trailer, and finally, our fifth wheel.” The fifth wheel is immediately visible as you enter the park. Today, the sign outside reads, “The hosts are in.” “People are always stopping by, to say

Faces turn over in village, township Hodges eleceted Village President; Nugent, Angell-Powell earn council seats PENTWATER — Many new faces are in place on the Pentwater Village Council and Pentwater Township Board. On the village side, Jeff Hodges, Dan Nugent and Michelle Angell-Powell won seats on the village council in last November’s election. Hodges defeated former Councilman Dan Hoekstra in the village president race while incumbent Councilman Don Palmer, and newcomers Angell-Powell and Nugent, won the races over Pamela Burdick and former village President Juanita Pierman for the three available council seats. In January, former Councilwoman April Watkins resigned, and council appointed Burdick to the vacancy as Burdick received the fourth most votes in the November election. In May, Councilman Bill Maxwell resigned, creating yet another vacancy which is expected to be filled by appointment at the June council meeting. Only one face changed on the township board as former Oceana County Administrator Sue Johnson was elected the township clerk over John Barker. Former Clerk Dean Holub chose not to seek reelection last year.

Pentwater OKs monthly contract extension for village manager PENTWATER — A 30-day contract extension for Pentwater Village Manager Rob Allard received Pentwater Village Council approval at its regular meeting May 8. The extension retroactive to May 1 will pay Allard his regular $6,967 monthly salary and can be renewed on a monthly basis. Allard announced in February he was stepping aside for personal reasons, and his resignation was to be effective April 30. Although council has been actively seeking out a successor, it hasn’t hired one. Personnel committee Chairman Michelle Angell-Powell said the committee has narrowed its search to Allard two unnamed finalists and was in salary negotiations with each. The village received 20 applications. “These guys are very qualified,” Angell-Powell said. “They aren’t greenhorns.” The village is in the process of restructuring its village manager position. Because none of the candidates had the qualifying wastewater treatment plant operating license that Allard possesses, council approved hiring Infrastructure Alternatives of Rockford to perform wastewater plant operations. The company will be paid $5,000 a month for plant operations which includes support equipment and programs such as a work truck for the operator in charge, benefits, vacation coverage, personal protection equipment, laptop computer and cell phone. It also includes a 20-hour work week and lab operations and additional technical operations, engineering and mechanical support.

Pentwater to repaint water tower interior PENTWATER — An agreement to repaint the inside of the Pentwater Village water tower received Pentwater Village Council approval May 8. Council approved the $95,000 agreement with LC United of Sterling Heights. Village Manager Rob Allard said the project includes the installation of a $15,000 mixer to prevent the tower water from freezing during extremely cold winter months along with safety upgrades. The work is expected to take place this fall, and the water tower is expected to be off-line for approximately one month.

Lots of ways to honor the fallen this Memorial Day in Pentwater By Amanda Dodge PTW Writer Pentwater veterans are prepping for a weekend steeped in remembrance that concludes with honoring those who served our country and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice doing so. According to Pentwater VFW 6017 Commander and Marine Gunnery Sergeant James Carlson, veterans will be selling poppies from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 27 in Pentwater, followed by a memorial service at Whiskey Creek at 2 p.m. On Sunday, May 28, the Boy Scouts will host an all-you-can-eat style breakfast with pancakes, bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy, juice, milk and coffee at the VFW post from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost for the breakfast is $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 5 to 12. The Pentwater Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29 with line-up at 9 a.m. across the street from the Baptist Church on First Street. All veterans, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are encouraged to participate. Carlson asks that veterans dress in their uniforms if they are able to. The parade will march through Pentwater stopping first at the village marina where a ceremony to honor the Navy dead will take place. The veterans will then lead the parade over to the village green, where guest speaker Pent6 PENTWATER THIS WEEK
water Public Schools Superintendent, Scott Karaptian, will address those in attendance. After the ceremony and a flag raising on the green, the procession will head to the Pentwater Township Cemetery for the final ceremony and flag raising of the parade. Each ceremony location will include a 21 gun salute and Taps will be played. The public is welcome to all of these ceremonies and is asked to follow the veterans to each location. Carlson said that the parade and ceremonies will be followed by a 1 p.m. no-cost potluck at the VFW Hall for veterans and their families. Those who attend the events will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and the proceeds will go to help with building an addition on the VFW Hall for storage. Tickets are $5 each, and the drawing will take place in October. The Pentwater VFW will also host a pancake breakfast Sunday, July 2 and Sunday, Sept. 3.

PENTWATER THIS WEEK 9
Pentwater Bike Share Program enters 3rd year By Amanda Dodge PTW Writer Traveling around Pentwater has been made easier and more eco-friendly with the help of the Pentwater Bike Share Program. Program caretaker, Claudia Ressel-Hodan, said that her excitement about the program continues to grow, and it has been an overall success for the past two years. She added that this year has already started off well, with four bikes locked at the marina for boaters to use when they come in. “There are instructions to text me the bike number, their name and where they are staying and I text back the bike unlock code, so there is accountability. It has worked out really well, and the bikes got locked back up. They would also text a thank you and tell me they — Claudia Ressel-Hodan locked the bike back up,” ResselHodan explained. And to those that use them, Ressel-Hodan said that the program has not had a problem with people stealing the bikes in the past two years. “Only two bikes have gone missing,” she said. She attributes the missing bikes to the larger issue of people not returning the bikes to their stands, and hopes the new text to unlock plan will help to avoid this. She also said that she and Police Chief Laude Hartrum have been going into Pentwater

schools and discussing bicycle safety with the students, as she said there was a little bit of disrespect for the bikes by youth use, and she had to discard eight bikes due to poor treatment. This has led to the program being open to those 18 and up. Ressel-Hodan did want to extend that if any children or teens really need a bike to get to school or work, then the clubs
in Pentwater are willing to help them with that. Ressel-Hodan is very excited to be offering a selection of brand new bikes and former rental bikes from The Woodshed bike shop in Mears for the program, and is moving towards only using bicycles with coaster brakes, to cut down on maintenance. “The plan is to have 12 bikes out for use by Memorial Day,” she said.

Summer Kick-off Music Festival to bring music to multiple Pentwater locations June 3 festival to include 9 bands at 7 locations from 11 a.m. to midnight
Tunes will fill the air Saturday, June 3 as the Michigan Mafia String Band, Jet Beats, Alias and A Road Less Traveled are set to perform at various locations during the inaugural Summer Kick-off Music Festival in Pentwater. The festival is the brain child of former South Florida Music Promoter Chuck Raymond who’s Florida events would draw 900 to 1,000 people weekly. Raymond, originally from Oceana County, is a Pentwater High School graduate who has recently returned to the area to care for his aging parents the late D. and Beverly Raymond, after being gone for over 25 years. Having worked on organizing the festival for nearly 10 months, Raymond has all the acts, venues, and most importantly, sponsors lined up. Music is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the day, wrapping up at midnight. All festival concerts are free of charge and will be in a mix of indoor and outdoor locations through out downtown Pentwater. It is suggested to bring a lawn chair and sunglasses and if you know Michigan weather, May 23 - June 13
Road Less Traveled bring an umbrella just in case as the festival will take place rain or shine. The Michigan Mafia String Band will headline the festival with a performance in the famed Pentwater Village Green Gazebo from 3-7 p.m. Following the band’s performance, the Michigan Mafia String Band will move over to the Antler Bar for a special second floor set at 9 p.m. Road Less Traveled will bring music to the south end of town during its noon to 4 p.m. performance at the Village Marina Gazebo. “For the first time that anyone can remember the Village of Pentwater is allowing the Village Marina Gazebo to be used for a band,” Raymond said. Library undergoing ‘Refresh’ renovation
June 12 re-opening anticipated
The Pentwater Township Library’s long awaited renovation is nearing completion. The library closed in early March so new wiring, cabling for computers and plumbing, require cutting through parts of the library’s concrete pad, could be installed. The library’s Project Refresh renovation will change the library’s interior layout and will include painting, new carpeting, new furnishings, a new public rest room and a more robust wi-fi network. According to Pentwater Township Library Director Mary Barker, new flooring and trim were installed in mid May and contractors will need to put the finishing touches on a few electrical and plumbing projects before having the library inspected. Barker hopes the library’s staff can begin moving back into the building the first week of June, and she is aiming for a Monday, June 12 opening. “Everything has gone pretty smooth,” Barker said. “It’s been amazing to see it (the transition) happen.” Prior to the renovation project, library patrons were allowed to check out materials and were given a due date of June 6. Barker said that through the past three months no one has attempted to return books in the library’s drop-off box. “We would like people to hold on to library materials until we reopen,” Barker added. After the library’s last day of operation March 10 all books and shelving were wrapped and removed to be stored in a warehouse until the renovations were completed by Library Design Associates, Inc. of Plymouth, the project’s designers and project managers. During the refresh project, libraries in Ludington, Hart and Shelby agreed to assist Pentwater library patrons. Electronic materials from the Pentwater library’s website continued to be available to all Pentwater patrons, including e-magazines, e-books, e-audio and video streaming. May 23 - June 13

Start of Summer Party to celebrate Pentwater ‘Throughout the Years’ Annual street party moved to village green
Say “Hello” to Summer with your neighbors and friends at the Pentwater’s annual Start of Summer Party Sunday, June 4. Traditionally the village’s Start of Summer Party takes place in front of the village hall along Hancock Street, however, this year’s party has been moved to the Pentwater Village Green as a larger crowd is anticipated due to the Village of Pentwater celebrating its sesquicentennial. This year’s theme is “Throughout the Years” and tables will be decorated by the decade. The Start of Summer Party will take place from 5-7 p.m. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a dish to share. Picnic tables will be available, but due to the popularity of the event, people may want to bring a folding chair. Hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, water and table service will be provided. Entertaining party goers will be the Pentwater High School Jazz Band and Good Music DJ. Volunteers from the Lighthouse Lutheran Church will cook hot dogs. Pentwater business owners donate food and money for the successful event. There is no charge for the event others than bringing an appetizer, salad, casserole or dessert to share. For information contact the village office at 869-8301.

hello or ask for information,” Pat says. “We help campers with whatever they need,” nods Gabe. “We orient new people to the area. They always want to know about restaurants, or ‘where can I go to get this?’ We give a lot of general information.” “We provide coffee for people,” Pat gestures to the thermos, cups, creamer and sugar on a small table nearby. “And every day we post the weather report.” Soon a van with a family pulls up at the host site. The driver wants to know where they can get some ice. “Ordinarily we have ice here,” Gabe tells him. “But it hasn’t come in yet.” “We’ll be getting ice in a few days,” Pat assures them. Camp host is a volunteer position with the State of Michigan, and requires the host to be on the premises six hours a day, five days a week. “But it’s way more than that,” says Pat. Each host works for one month. “We start in April,” explains Gabe. “Shelacking all the memorial benches. We do the flower bed at the entrance. We clean up—the leaves, the branches, and sweep the sand off the paths. We get the park up and running. We’re the May hosts; each month a new host comes in. We have lots of help, with a staff of wonderful volunteers who come in for the opening and closing weekends, in May and again in October, when everything gets taken down and put away for the year.” “Some volunteers having been coming here for years and years,” Pat observes. “Like George and Sandra—what’s their last name, Gabe?” “Davis. George and Sandra Davis.” “George is 94!” Pat laughs. “He drives a big motor home, and he pitches in like anything. Sandra is a few years younger—she used to be a rescue pilot and is still flying. They come in for the work weekend. They’re amazing.” The Lajkos agree that probably the best thing about their job—and camping in general—is reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. “We’ve been coming here so long we’ve made friends with other campers who come
Gabe and Pat Lajko take in the sights from the middle of the Pentwater Channel’s north pier.
from all over Michigan,” says Gabe. “We look forward to seeing them again, and catching up on what’s been going on in their lives.” “There are also the locals who just come to the park to take walks,” says Pat. “They’ll stop in to our campsite to say hello. Or they’ll stop by the house. That’s what we love about Pentwater. The people really care about you. They’re compassionate— for instance, Gabe’s dad recently had a bad fall and was in the hospital, and people ask about him every day.” There’s no question that being a park host is equal parts work and fun. Or maybe more fun than work. “We have big bonfires at night,” Pat smiles. “We sit around and talk and sing, and it’s so much fun. Some of the campers in our group are delicious campfire cooks—
they’ve made pizzas and cobblers and things like that right there on the fire. And we often go out for dinner as a group.” Have they ever had any problems? “Oh, it’s pretty quiet in general,” Gabe admits. “Once in a while somebody might be a little loud late at night. But that’s about it.” “The biggest thing that happened, as far as I can remember, was a loose dog running around a few years ago,” Pat laughs. “We called the police, who came and picked him up. That was the big excitement!” Nonetheless, the Lajkos take their job very seriously. “We do this because we’ve always considered the park our home away from home,” Pat explains. “In fact, we bought a brick on the boardwalk that says, ‘Home Away from Home.’ We’ve always had this commitment to Pentwater.”

beach volleyball or taking in a Pentwater sunset, the beach is definitely a must see. If you are someone who likes to spend more time in the water than on land, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, too. Pentwater offers many different water sport activities. We have everything from laid back floating on a pontoon boat or kayaking to the more daring jet ski rides or tubing. I have experienced all of these activities and I recommend that everyone does the same. You have not lived until you have been thrown out of a tube at least once! Overall, life in Pentwater is a blend of new and old, loud and peaceful, but is certainly never boring. We hope whatever memories you make here are great ones.
