Jeff Hodges

Welcome to Pentwater

Welcome to the Village of Pentwater where the grass is always greener. Being born and raised in nearby Hart, I was introduced to Pentwater at a very young age and consider myself lucky to have spent most of my life in Oceana County and to call Pentwater home. As children we are often asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Less often asked is where do you want to live when you do grow up? While I have always wanted to travel more, I have had the opportunity to visit many beautiful places in this great country. It is easy to see why Pentwater rates highly on many peoples “favorite places” list, and it has always felt so great to come back home. After graduating from Hope College with a business/teaching degree, I could not wait to spread my wings and go out to conquer the world. I followed Horace Greeley’s advice and headed west. I found myself in Scottsdale, Ariz. I landed a job and got an apartment in this sunny bustling city, life was good. A few months later, summer arrived with its 100 plus degree days and nights and no real lakes to be found. That’s when I realized why so many people went through so much effort and expense to spend even a short amount of time in Pentwater. Lake Michigan was calling me, and I answered. I was homeward bound. After finding a location in downtown Pentwater and opening Provisions Sport Shop,

my adventure was just beginning. Two businesses, three great kids and 30 years later, the adventure continues. We make many decisions in life, hopefully more good ones than bad, but returning to and staying here in Pentwater was certainly one of my better decisions, and I feel very blessed to be here. Whether you are visiting, summering or are full-time resident, you probably know many of the wonderful charms and fabulous natural amenities Pentwater has to offer. From our old traditions to our new festivals and events, Pentwater always has, and always will be changing. Our goal is to make sure the changes are for the betterment of our great community. With our amazing beaches and our unbelievable sunsets, it is the people who have made Pentwater what it has been for the last 150 years, and I look forward to a very bright future. If a youngster you know ever replies to the question “What do you want to be when grow up?” with “ I want to be the president,”may I suggest you recommend that they live in Pentwater. They may not end up as the president, but who wouldn’t want to spend their life in a village where even when it’s covered in a blanket of white, the grass is always greener. Enjoy Pentwater! Enjoy life! – Jeff Hodges Pentwater Village President PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

The pause that refreshed

Pentwater Township Library’s

‘Project Refresh’ was worth the wait BY MARY BETH CRAIN PTW WRITER When the Pentwater Township Library closed its doors in March for renovations, the whole community waited with bated breath for the results. It was an undertaking some five

2 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

years in the making, and since an add on to the current square footage was out of the question it involved choosing whether to construct a whole new building at a new location or redesign the existing layout. Whatever the decision, one thing was clear: after 21 years, the little library was due for an overhaul

that would upgrade its technology, increase its capacity, and offer patrons a more open and airy environment. Since the cost of building a new library, was prohibitive, the decision was made to go with what was on hand. Library Design Associates of Plymouth, Mich. took on what was dubbed “Project Refresh,” and with the help of a small army of subcontractors, worked the kind of miracle you see on “Extreme Makeover,” “Flip This House,” “Fixer Upper,” and other popular reality shows extolling the remarkable lengths to which remodeling can go. Three months later, at precisely 10

JUNE 27 - JULY 4

a.m. Monday, June 19 the library reopened to a line of eager patrons who couldn’t wait to see the results. It was, noted library director Mary Barker, much like the big reveal on those home shows, where the owners are introduced, for the first time, to their brand new old house. While there was no shrieking or sobbing, the amazement and delight that greeted the new library was evident on every face. “People were so enthusiastic,” Barker beamed. “They were all saying things like, ‘It’s really beautiful’ and ‘Wow, I can’t believe it could look like this.’ And so many people showed up—we had over 200.” The kids, Barker said, were particularly excited. “There were kids on their bikes, circling around before we opened. When I told them we weren’t open yet, they said, ‘We know—we just wanted to see if we could get a sneak peek.’ And kids were lining up an hour early.” A library has always been, it seems, a vital part of Pentwater life. According to Barker, the first library was established in 1856, barely three years after the first settlers arrived. It was a fledgling community in every sense of the word, a lumber town that was, according to one resident’s memoirs, “an uncharted wilderness,” where wolves prowled around, eating the wood off the handles of saws and axes, and bears and other wild predators struck fear in the hearts of the handful of new arrivals. In 1854, the first school was built,

with one teacher and one pupil. That was also the year a Mrs. Barber baked the first cake in the settlement. In 1855, the first U.S. mail was brought in. But while Pentwater was only at the cusp of civilization, it was determined, by God, to have a library. At the first meeting of the new township organization in 1856, the subject was brought up, and approved. “The township had $50 in the treasury for a library,” laughed Barker. We don’t know what that library was like. No records exist describing it. But in 1930, the library that many Pentwaterites remember was established in what is now the Community Room of the Pentwater Village Hall, where it remained until the current library was built in 1996. And for 21 years, the new library remained the same, with no upgrades. When “Project Refresh” began, the construction crew was, in many ways, starting from square one. “The vents had never been cleaned,” observed Barker. “You can’t believe

what was in there. Nothing had been done to the building since 1996.” The long-needed renovation encompassed everything from new plumbing, cabling and wiring for computers to redesigning and reconfiguring space and opening up the premises to a new, airier and brighter look. “We haven’t added on,” Barker emphasized. “We used the original footprint; there’s no new footage.” But the result is an optical illusion of sorts, because when you walk into the new “refreshed” library, it definitely looks bigger. The old circulation desk to the right of the front doors is gone, and the area now opens up to the children’s area and a series of computer stations for older kids. The new circulation desk, a handsome design of white block with dynamic modern hanging lamps, occupies the area that used to lead to the back door, foyer and restroom. There’s

Village Clerk Colleen Moser said the village received approximately 20 applications for the position. Under the contract, Brown will receive a $70,000 annual salary. Dunlap tapped to fill council vacancy PENTWATER — At the recommendation of Pentwater Village President Jeff Hodges, the Pentwater Village Council June 12 appointed Peter Dunlap to the village council seat vacancy. The vacancy was created in May when former Councilman Bill Maxwell resigned. The term ends in November 2018. Hodges said he considered a number of different people before forming his recommendation. He said Dunlap is a relatively new face to the Pentwater community. Dunlap told council and audience members that he is a semi practicing attorney.

Movies on the Green race forward with 8 more feature films BY AMANDA DODGE PTW WRITER Though the idea to turn the Pentwater Village Green into an outdoor movie destination has been kicking around for awhile, it has finally come to fruition with the success of the first film shown over Memorial Day weekend. With the remaining eight films set to be shown almost each Sunday from the fourth of July to Labor Day weekend, there is something in store for all ages. Movies on the Green committee member Amy Roberson said that their group was officially formed in February of this year by Cosmic Candy co-owner John Nagel.“This is something John has been wanting to do for some period of time now,” Roberson explained. “He decided to form a committee, so he asked several of us if we would be interested and we are very excited about it. It just took off, and we have had some really great ideas from all of us coming together with lots of different backgrounds, and getting input from different business owners. We make such a great team.” Roberson added that the committee meets on a monthly basis and each member has “lots of checklists” to keep things moving forward. She also noted that committee member Steve Bass has done all of the group’s design and signage work, and they asked Claudia Ressel-Hodan to join them, after deciding to donate all of the proceeds from this not-for-profit event to the Pentwater Hart Bike Trail, and learning that she had already purchased the film rights JUNE 27 - JULY 4

for the movie that is showing this Sunday, July 2. The film is a perfect parallel to the bike trail, as it features a small town that is enthusiastic about cycling, much like Pentwater. “We thought ‘what a great way to give back,’ so we chose the bike trail. In the future, we will

do something different,” Roberson said, adding that they will choose a relevant cause each year.

Engineer outlines 2017 street project PENTWATER — The first phase of the Pentwater street improvement project was outlined for the Pentwater Village Council June 12. Most of the work for 2017 will focus on the Clymer Street area between Sixth and Park streets. Work also is planned on Fifth Street between Clymer and Morris; Concord Street between Ellery and Clymer; Lowell Street between Ellery and Clymer; Ellery Street between Park and First and First Street between Ellery and Morris. Project engineer David Bluhm of Fleis and Vandenbrink said they chose those locations because he doesn’t expect any underground utility work will be needed. He hopes to bid out the project in July with construction to start in midAugust and continue into late October. He also said the plan is to keep construction traffic out of the downtown area. Bluhm also provided construction cost estimates for the next three years. He expects to spend $450,000 in 2017; $1.25 million in 2018 and $1.4 million in 2019. The estimates are for road work only. Village voters approved a special street millage last November. A link providing project updates and a street improvement map is available on the village website at pentwatervillage.org.

PYC to host Venetian Night Boat Parade The Pentwater Yacht Club will bring back a “hometown favorite” event in celebration of Pentwater’s Sesquicentennial Saturday evening, July 1 as it host the Pentwater Venetian Night Boat Parade with the theme “Boats Throughout the Years.” According to event organizer Chris Conroy, the boat parade participants will begin gathering at 9 p.m. off the village marina near Snug Harbor and at 9:30 p.m., will proceed along Pentwater Lake towards the yacht club before heading out the channel into Lake Michigan. Boats will then circle around and return along the south wall of the channel and will then make their way around Pentwater Lake in a counter-clockwise manner. If necessary due to rough weather the parade will travel from the village marina past the PYC to the channel mouth and circle Pentwater Lake counter-clockwise to the parade’s starting point before disbursing to dock. During the parade, Pentwater Village President Jeff Hodges, former State Rep. Jon Bumstead and PYC Commodore Russ Murphy will judge participants as they circle around Pentwater Lake with awards being given in multiple categories. Following the parade, an awards ceremony will take place at the Pentwater Village Green at 11:30 p.m. There is no entry fee to take part in the parade, however, suggested donations can be made out to the Community Foundation for Oceana County with memo “Protect Pentwater Harbor Fund” or the “Pentwater Fireworks Fund.” The deadline to enter the parade is Friday, June 30, “so that we can communicate the participant number to be displayed for judges,” Conroy said. Entry forms, along with rules and regulations, are available by visiting the PYC website ate www.pentwateryachtclub.com. Local marine law enforcement will be on the water to keep participants safe and operating within local, state and US laws.

All Hands on Deck to celebrate Great Lakes

The All Hands On Deck Great Lakes Regional Event is coming to the Pentwater and Ludington area Monday, July 3. All Hands On Deck organizers are encouraging area residents and visitors to gather on the shores of all the Great Lakes and on boats in the adjoining waters to celebrate the beauty and the overwhelming value of the Great Lakes. Locally people will gather at 10 a.m. at the Charles Mears State Park beach in Pentwater as well as Ludington State Park and Stearns Park in Ludington to unite in an hour-long handhold. Local boaters are invited to join the event from the water by raising specially designed flags of unity. Link a hand, hoist a flag, trade story for a marble on behalf of the Great Lakes June Garden of the Month The Garden Club of Pentwater and Neighboring Communities recently selected the garden of Ralph and Amy Baker, 570 Third Ave., in Pentwater for its June Garden of the Month. The gardens are a labor of love for both of the Bakers and like all gardens a work in progress. It started three years ago when they returned to Amy’s family roots, where her grandfather Warren Mullen was the village doctor for many years. The Bakers love Pentwater and spend many weekends improving their lovely property.

no back entrance now, and the restroom is accessed from the inside. There are brand new round tables with fourway partitions that enclose four computer stations, where patrons can use their own devices as well. Free wi-fi is available, and there’s an expanded adult section. “It was originally a small meeting room at the east end of the building, but we tore out two walls and opened up the whole area,” noted Barker. “There’s a bank of windows now, and it’s very light and open, with a nice view.” Another way to create the illusion of space was to change the shelving. All the shelves have been lowered, eliminating the old hardto-reach top shelves. Not that you have to worry about reduced content—there are still the same amount of books. “We tried to find ways to create more storage and utilize space in multiple ways,” Barker noted. “For instance, we changed the children’s division. Everything was lowered, with movable shelving so we can accommodate more activities. We’ll have story time, and arts and crafts in here.” She indicated a spacious room off the children’s area, on the northwest side of the building. “We needed a new meeting room. One that could accommodate different sized groups. This multi-purpose room was the original children’s department when the library opened in 1996.” The new meeting room also includes a small separate room—a “tutor room,” Barker explained, “for one-on-one meetings.” Then there’s the redecorating, carefully planned with a Pentwater theme. New carpeting has a dune grass motif, and the spiffy new paint job, in savvy yet soothing colors of a tealish blue and sandy tan, “represents Pentwater,” said Barker. “The dark blue of the lake and the sandy color of the dunes. We wanted to create a peaceful, relaxing environment that reflects this area.” Visitors definitely noticed. “I love the colors,” enthused Pat Lajko, at the reception following the ribbon-cutting event that took place Tuesday, June 20. “Look at the carpet—it’s dune grass. It really goes with the brown and blue— like the sand and the water.” The ribbon-cutting was the chance for both the library’s board and personnel to say thanks,

for the tireless efforts of everyone who helped to realize what was, essentially, a community vision. Standing at the parking lot in front of the library’s doors, board president Kendra Flynn chronicled the long journey from dream to reality. Quoting Ben Franklin—“Energy and persistence conquer all things”—she reflected that, “Without the energy and persistence of our board members and all those who worked so hard on this project, it could never have happened.” When Barker took the podium, her brief address came straight from the heart. As she thanked her staff, she struggled with tears.“You cannot imagine how much hard work these people have put in,” she said, as the crowd applauded. At that moment, the human element took center stage, reminding us that a library is not merely a construction project, but a thing that people love and need and will tend to as devotedly as they do a garden that can only survive and bloom with continued dedication. After Barker raised a giant red-handled scissors in the air and officially cut the bright blue ribbon held by board members, the doors opened and the gathering poured into the library, exclaiming over the new features and enjoying conversation and a beautiful hors

d’oeuvres buffet catered and donated by Karen St. Denis. “I’m thrilled beyond words,” Flynn acknowledged. “We’ve waited so long to do the right thing for the library.” Does it look the way she envisioned it? “No,” she admitted. “Oh, when you look at plans and blueprints, it’s one thing. But when you actually see it come to life, it’s overwhelming. I don’t think they could have planned anything better without building a new building.” In the children’s division, youngsters were totally engaged. Kids took to the new computers like birds to the air. Little ones flocked to the round table that was scaled to their height, grabbing for paper and colorful crayons. “This place is so important to them,” Barker smiled. “For many, it’s their home away from home. We have one little boy who comes here every single day after school, and stays for a couple of hours. “They love the library. Everyone loves the library. I believe we truly are the focal point of the community.” New library hours are Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

MOVIES ON THE GREEN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7

Another way they are raising funds for the cause is through the sale of limited edition, collectible popcorn buckets. The red buckets, with gold design, are available for $10, and are good for the entire dated season, with $1 refills, Roberson said, adding that the design will be changed for next year. So with raffle tickets, popcorn buckets, a red carpet photograph with a DeLorean experience, the committee waited to see how their first film, “Back to the Future”, would go. Much to their delight and amazement, Roberson said that around 500 people turned out to see the time traveling classic, and put a seal of approval on this new event. Movies on the Green committee members plan to make, into a new Pentwater summer tradition. “We were very excited for the first one. It went really well,” she exclaimed. “We were really excited about the number of people. It was such a great community event. We had people from various areas, including some who told me they came in from Fremont, Mich. after hearing about it.” Roberson added that the company they are using to lease the films rights through approved them to show nine films this year, but they are hoping to show more next year. “As a committee, we tossed around some (film) names, and looked at some current new releases that would be fun for families. We also wanted to throw in some classics and a musical. This way we can get different genres that people love. Some of our sponsors were able to help us decide what movies we would show. Our sponsors have been phenomenal. We didn’t even get through our list of people to ask and they all wanted to be a part of it. Everyone has been so supportive,” Roberson said. The success of the interactive events before “Back to the Future” was shown has prompted the committee and sponsors to add more activities like that. For their final film of the season, Roberson said they will have characters to do a meetand-greet with the children, with volunteers playing Belle and the Beast. She also added that their 50s musical film about the T-birds and the Pink Ladies will include a costume contest, dancing and sing-a-long. Those joining in on the fun of Movies on the JUNE 27 - JULY 4

Green are asked to gather at 8 p.m. to get settled into their lawn chairs and stretched out on their blankets for fun, games and prizes, which Roberson said will all depend on each film’s sponsor. Movies will begin at sunset, which will be around 9 p.m. The “gathering time” as she designated it “gives sponsors time to interact with the community and speak to them.” “The guys on this committee have such great vision and this is so much fun. We have a professional screen right out of Hollywood, and with all of the generous donors that we have, we were able to purchase a new projector. The sponsors are the ones who purchased the movie licenses and this not-for-profit event really truly is something that is for the community,” Roberson said. “We are already planning for next year after we have seen how much buzz was created. This really is special, and we really have a great team

and great community sponsors. What a way to end the evening and the week on Sunday!” Movies on the Green take place almost each Sunday from the fourth of July to Labor Day weekend. Movie discrioptions include, July 2 - A group of Indiana friends work to make one’s Italian cycling dreams come true; July 9 - DreamWorks’ animated film about an infant in charge; July 16 - Blast off to save space with this quirky Marvel crew; July 23 - An 80s classic about a slacker who skips school for an adventurous day on the town; July 30 - Watch Elliott fly over the moon with this lovable Reese’s Pieces-eating alien; Aug. 6 - A koala struggles to save his theater by hosting a competition in this vocal-themed animated film, Aug.13 - The T-Birds and the Pink Ladies try to unite Sandy and Danny in this classic sock hop musical; and Sept. 3 - An update on a tale as old as time.
