Welcome to Pentwater
Sharing my story of how I came to love Pentwater is not unlike others that you may have heard before. There are many quaint and lovely villages along the shores of Lake Michigan. So what makes Pentwater so intoxicating? It is difficult to answer that question except to say that once you are here, you will return. My husband and I were entrenched in the traditional New England lifestyle having both grown up in the same town just north of Boston, Mass. We both went to secondary schools in Massachusetts and began our careers, nursing and photography, expecting to live our lives and bringing up our family in the wonderful world of New England. That all changed when my husband was transferred to Michigan in 1980. None of us really knew much about the state, but we were soon to find out just how lucky we were to be able to move to a location that embodied the same natural wonders we experienced living next to the ocean and beauty of the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. Only now we would be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Great Lakes and the rolling hills of Michigan. Fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, gardening, and enjoying the outdoors was
always special to us and we could still do it in the midwest. In summer, boating with our children was our primary pass time – which leads me to how we were introduced to Pentwater. Having stopped at the Pentwater Municipal Marina several times as we traveled north to experience life on the “Big Lake,” we always felt at home when tied up at the docks downtown. We slipped our boat first in Grand Haven, then Whitehall. One day, we decided to see if there was a seasonal slip in Pentwater. We arrived in 1997 by boat and secured a slip for the following year, and much to our surprise, ended up purchasing a small cottage in the village too. Since then we retired to a new/old home on Wythe Street. Two of our children have been married on the beach at Charles Mears State Park. Grandchildren love coming to Nana and Papa’s house in Pentwater, and we feel very much at home here. Who would have thought? There is something special about this little village. I can walk or ride my bike to everything. Watch the spectacular sunsets at the beach. Experience the many events planned by the village, esContinued on page 13 PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

By Mary Beth Crain Contributing Writer
When, at the age of 11, Bonnie Knapp witnessed her first pottery demonstration, her fate was sealed. “I saw this potter on TV,” the Pentwater artist recalls. “And I was mesmerized. I knew from that moment on that this was what I wanted to do.” It’s Tuesday afternoon at the Pentwater Artisan Center, a second home to Knapp. At one of the numerous long work tables, she displays some of her pieces, each one striking in its individuality. The multi-colored metallic glaze on a couple of Raku fish shimmers in the light. A ceramic colander with a sea green nebula glaze seems too beautiful to use, but Knapp says she does indeed, on a daily basis. A shiny ceramic bowl with a rose pattern and black polka dot rim contrasts with several thin, delicate white porcelain vases which, unglazed, have a translucent purity that Knapp finds exciting. “It’s my latest project,” she explains. “I wanted to try a new medium. I like the way the clay responds, its plasticity. And the fact

that it’s white and has a softness to it in appearance is appealing to me.” What exactly was it about pottery that spoke to her those many years ago? Bonnie pauses to reflect.“Well, as a child, it was something very soothing. And the idea that you could actually create something from a lump of clay that people could use was amazing to me.” It’s a rather remarkable story, considering that Bonnie had to set her dream aside for another 10 years because there were no art classes in her area, or in the school curriculum, when she was growing up. It wasn’t until she went to college that she was able to finally get behind the potter’s wheel.

”
I’m going to do what I want to do, make what I want to make,
“I don’t care what anybody thinks.
“It was at the University of Minnesota. I was almost afraid to take ceramics because it was always a dream and I was afraid of failing. But when I took the plunge, it was exciting and fun. Oh, it was tough going at first. When you start out, you’re not good. You say, I didn’t know it was so hard. But I loved it, and knew that I wanted to pursue it and get good.” And today, in her mid-60s, Bonnie is still getting good, or rather, better and better, at an art form that is still full of endless surprises. “I did arts and crafts shows for many years,” she says.“And I really got into a rut. I did shows every weekend and I was just doing a lot of production. I really wanted to do more creative things but there were always people looking for me at the shows, wanting my cups, chip dishes, bowls. “Then, when I turned 60, I began feeling a sense of urgency. I was tired of doing the same thing; I wanted to explore new areas. I said to myself, I don’t care what anybody
thinks. I’m going to do what I want to do, make what I want to make. Now.” It’s been somewhat of a long road to realizing her ultimate dream. Bonnie met her husband of 49 years, Kirk Knapp, at the university. They married, started a family and moved to Grand Rapids, where Kirk, got a position with E.F. Hutton as a stockbroker. It wasn’t until the late 1980s, when family obligations were winding down, that Bonnie was able to get back into pottery. It became a lucrative profession. “I worked during the winter, stockpiling inventory, and did shows in the summer. We lived in Arizona for two years and we’d come up here and do shows, and then go back. We moved here permanently three years ago.” It was when she found herself at the crossroads of productivity versus creativity that Kirk, who had several successful businesses, launched a new one—Tat International, a service providing equipment to people wanting to get into the field of airbrush tattoos. “He needed my help,” says Bonnie. “And that was a good opportunity to step away from my business and think about where I wanted to go.” And she discovered that where she wanted to go was… everywhere. “I took a Raku class in Kalamazoo, and learned wood firing in Saugatuck. I wanted to do it all. That’s why my work is all over the place. I have porcelain, ceramic, stoneware and Raku. I’m always experimenting with new ideas and forms.” “I think what’s unique about Bonnie,” muses Kirk, “is that she’s always pushing the edge of the envelope. She doesn’t do the same old thing like a lot of crafters. She has a very special spirit, and when that spirit comes out in her work, it’s amazing.” Like her newest Raku piece, which she titled “Old Bossy.” Mounted on a slab of wood crate, it’s a whimsically abstract representation of a cow, with four dangling legs attached to the body with wires and an extremely pronounced posterior that sprouts a lock of horse hair. The idea came from the fertile recesses of memory.

PENTWATER THIS WEEK 3
Pentwater channel depths in ship-shape “We saw no areas more shallow than about nine feet,” wrote Dave Roseman in a message to Pentwater Yacht Club members after he and Phil Ceton mapped the Pentwater Channel Friday, June 26. The results of this mapping are available online at www.pentwaterchannel. org. “The very good news is that the channel is deep enough to accommodate the great majority of boats,” added Roseman. “Higher lake levels right now are helping, but we need to stay ahead of Mother Nature and find durable funding to ensure that our harbor can be accessed every year.” In an effort to understand the causes of shoaling, and to provide information to boaters, the Pentwater channel has been mapped about 20 times since 2012. There appears to be two problems. The main issue is a sandbar that forms just west of the channel. This is a continuation of the sandbars that form along the entire lakeshore, and is the

result of what is called the longshore current. The second problem is sand that blows from the adjacent beaches into the channel. This problem has been lessened with a trial installation of fencing, and a permanent remedy is being pursued. “This season’s improved channel depths
also are good for sailboat teams that want to overnight in Pentwater July 17 while returning to their home ports after this year’s Chicago to Mackinac Race,” said Laura Ellam, chair of the Pentwater Yacht Club’s Back from the Mac party. Details for the event will be announced soon.

Petri Gallery 44 Second St.
www.Petrigallery.com Perti Gallery has expanded. The gallery known for showcasing the art of Bert and Cheri Petri is now twice the size. Gallery owner Cheri Petri stepped back from the gallery she and her husband, artist Bert Perti, had run for 20 some years, following Bert’s death in 2009. Last year she opened Petri Gallery with the help of friend Hugh Larsen. “It was a good year, with people glad to see the Perti name and art work once again,” Cheri said. “When the space next door became available it was an opportunity to make a good thing even better.” With the larger gallery, Petri is now able to carry more art. Besides paintings and prints by the Pertis, the gallery will carry a variety of high quality art by artists from around the country. Pottery, glass, wood, jewelry and more will be on display. Having taught art for 15 years at West Shore Community College and privately for many more, the new space allows Cheri an area completely devoted to art classes. “My students are on all levels from beginner to advanced. I also teach all medium.” Petri’s classes are unique as she allows her students to have a flexible schedule so they can fit classes into their lives. “Everyone is busy,” she says. “My classes allow people to come and go.” A number of summer classes are in the works, according to Petri. A corks and canvas night, PYOP (Paint Your Own Pillow), weekly children’s classes and various workshops are in the making.

The Wishing Well 5335 W. Business 31
A revamped storefront and new underground gas tanks are just the beginning of The Wishing Well’s reincarnation thanks in part to Chris and Ron Hammack along with their daughter Ericka Kew. Closed since 2012 following a smash-n-grab robbery, in which a stolen truck was driven through the front doors and also dislodged a gas pump, many Bass Lake area residents thought The Wishing Well or “The Well” as many people call it would never reopen. “It kind of happened to us,” Chris Hammack says about how the local Pentwater artist and her family got into the gas station/general store business. “I can’t say we planned it,” she added. The store’s gas pumps and store have been open since April selling beer, wine and liquor and other party store snacks along side some specialty foods described as “the staples but better.” The Wishing Well also features ice cream parlor, a wood-fired pizza and a small restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a small menu or as Ericka describes it “less options, better quality.”

Those wonderful gatherings are wholesome, in good taste and entertaining. What’s not to like! The people and their love of being home is evident in the smiles and greetings you receive as you meet the locals that reside here or seasonal visitors that return year after year. It is a way of life that only grows better as time goes on. If Norman Rockwell were alive, he could easily paint scenes in Pentwater that would rival Stockbridge, Mass. where he lived and painted his timeless scenes. Except for the water, they are one and the same. Pentwater is the best kept secret of Michigan. It is a living piece of the past that feels warm and friendly 365 days a year. Welcome! – Carole Hooper

Arts & crafts fair celebrates 51st year on the green The Pentwater Junior Women’s Club will host its annual arts and crafts fair Saturday, July 11, on the village green. The fair will last from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each year the club hosts the fair, which is juried to showcase the best that vendors and artists have to offer. Artists from all over the country will appear. Among the mediums that will be showcased this year are: paintings, glasswork, fiber, photography, wood, paper, ceramics, leather, jewelry, and much more. About 120 artists are expected to be presenting their items. The best-in-show award will be presented at noon, with the winner getting free entry into the 2016 fair. Also, a silent auction will be in the bandstand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the mobile food pantry in Pentwater. There will be food available for sale from the Pentwater Service Club, which supports the area through donations and services. Among the items available will be coffee and donuts in the morning as well as hot dogs, brats, chips, caramel corn and soft drinks later in the day. All proceeds for the art fair will be donated to “community groups and organizations that benefit and promote civic improvement,” said Rhonda Shotwell, registration committee chair of the PJWC. Last year, some of those donations included paying for replacement flags that fly on Han14 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

Boater safety classes set for July and August A pair of boater safety programs are scheduled for this summer at the Pentwater Yacht Club. The Don Van Zile Memorial Boater’s Safety Class will again be conducted by Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Marine Officer Tim Simon. The first session of classes will take place Thursday and Friday, July 9-10 and will run from 8 a.m. until noon. Students must attend both
days to receive a certificate. All residents, guests and visitors to the area ages 12 and up are eligible to earn the boater safety certificate and are welcome to attend. Michigan law requires that anyone born on or after Dec. 31, 1978 to obtain a boater’s safety certificate in order to legally operate a personal watercraft or a boat powered by a motor of more than six horsepower.
Pre-registration is required to allow organizers to have sufficient materials for everyone. There is no charge for the classes. To register contact Simon at 231-873-6771. A second session of boater safety class will take place Thursday and Friday, Aug. 6-7, 8 a.m. until noon. The program has been conducted every year since 2000.

Continued from page 3 “We lived on a farm for a while and we had cows. I’d never been around farm animals, and I loved looking at the cows, especially their back ends. I was fascinated by their big hip bones. That’s why I exaggerated them in this piece.” Indeed, when it comes to creativity, humor is always lurking in the wings. “I’m always encouraging Bonnie to push her uniqueness,” says Kirk. “Once I challenged her to create something totally impractical, something that no one could possibly use. She came up with this set of cups, each with an amusing twist. One had these big red spikes around the lip. Another was a very beautiful cup with no bottom. Another was full of holes. At shows, the kids really loved them!” Perhaps the most challenging thing about being a potter is the fact that the medium itself is a constantly evolving creative force. Take, for instance, glazing. “Glaze can be very frustrating,” Bonnie acknowledges. “It’s not always consistent, or predictable. A lot of times it depends on where you place your piece in the kiln. You can put a set of dishes on the top shelf, and another on the bottom, and they’ll turn out completely differently. Much depends on the clay you use—brown clay takes one kind of glaze, and if you use it on white clay it will be more consistent without the variations.” At the same time, it’s precisely the unpredictability of the medium that can inspire something totally original. When Bonnie began working in Raku—ceramic that is strictly decorative—it was somewhat like being a scientist; the result was often the result of experimentation. “Raku has a lot of different looks,” she explains. “Metallic, white crackle… I had to really experiment to get the intense crackle effect. The failure rate for Raku is high because there’s a lot of thermal shock. You put the piece in the kiln at room temperature, and within an hour JULY 7 - JULY 14
it’s at 1,700 degrees. The piece is glowing. You turn the kiln off, take the hood off, and take the piece out with tongs. You put in a bucket of combustibles, like newspaper or leaves or sawdust, and when the combustibles ignite, you put the lid on and let it all smoke for 15 minutes. Then you take a piece out and hopefully you have a priceless work of art.” And unlike other more benign art forms, Raku is definitely not for the faint of heart. “You have to wear cotton clothing with long sleeves,” cautions Bonnie. You can’t wear loose clothing, which can catch on fire. And when you’re taking a piece out of the kiln, even with tongs, you have to wear gloves.” Dangers aside, the potter’s life is still, for Bon-

nie, a dream come true. “I always love working. When I had my studio at my house and was doing shows, I’d have a lot of bowls, for instance, that were ready to trim at 11:30 at night because when bowls are ready to trim, they have to be done immediately. And I thought, if anyone had told me this is what I’d be doing, I don’t know that I would have gone into it. But here I am and I’m loving it. “I go into another world. It’s like you lose track of time. I’ll start a piece and then think, gee, I’m hungry, and I look up and five hours have gone by.” One of the things Bonnie is particularly grateful for is the opportunity to live in Pentwater. “It’s a wonderful place,” she enthuses. “The people are fabulous. They’re so friendly and
very helpful. When I first came here I didn’t know about the artisan center. I needed a place to work and people really helped me to find it.” Bonnie’s work is currently on display at Art on the Town. She also sells in several other select Michigan galleries, including the Newaygo County Council for the Arts, the Gold Key in Ludington, and the Painted Bird in Sutton’s Bay. While she maintains that one of the great rewards of her art is “making things that people can use and get pleasure from using,” there’s always that part of her that has a little bit of trouble letting go of a cherished piece. “Sometimes I do get attached to a piece and don’t want to part with it,” she confesses. “So once I got this idea—why not display it so people can see my work, but price it so high it won’t sell?” She shakes her head, laughing at her folly. “It sold!” PENTWATER THIS WEEK 19
