Welcome to Pentwater My dad always claimed that the beach was what made my parents decide to live in Pentwater. But for my mom, I know that it was just as important that Pentwater had a library. And, for me, too, the library has become just as special a part of Pentwater as the beach. When I visited my parents, the library was always my first stop for a little porch and beach reading. What tickled me was that often I would find waiting on shelf a copy of a recently published best seller for which, back home in the big city, I was #22 on the waiting list. And I love the “no-card” check out system at the library—I just told the librarians my mother’s name, and the book was mine to read. It was such a wonderful feeling of already being known and a part of the community. And in those years before laptops and smartphones, I just couldn’t head for the beach until I stopped at the library and checked my e-mail. Then later, after the beach, it was back to the library for movies. Who would have thought that my nieces could be in high school and never have seen “My Fair Lady?” When I moved here in 2005, I fol-
lowed my mom’s lead and joined the Friends of Pentwater Township Library. I bake cookies for author presentations and help at the library’s book sales. And then there was that summer the Friends raffled a huge dollhouse. It still makes me chuckle when I remember how we carted that dollhouse all over Pentwater, standing on corners and selling tickets at every fair and band concert. During the winters, when the beach is buried under the dunes and ice, the library is my favorite stop on a winter walk. It is just the right place for a sip of coffee, a quiet chat with neighbors and a few books for the long winter evenings. Book club discussions seem a little more relaxed and cozier; maybe this will be the winter we take on Dostoyevsky. The library’s movie nights and poetry readings just fit so nicely with the walk home through the snow. My dad was right about the beach— it has been the focus for many summers of family fun. But my mom had it right about Pentwater’s library. It’s a special place, all year round. So please stop in! – Elaine LeTarte
PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1
By Mary Beth Crain Contributing Writer
As you’re driving north along Hancock Street, you can’t help but notice, just past the curve on the way out of town, a bright yellow craftsman-style house with an old-fashioned hanging sign out front. The sign reads “The Cislers Sunshine Hollow,” and it’s a welcome into a world where sunshine plays a big role. “The name came from Dee Becke, who owns Hill and Hollow Campground,” explains Jenny Cisler. “We’d bought the house in 1988 and changed it from green to yellow, and Dee came by and said, ‘You know, your house is like a little bit of sunshine in the hollow.’ And I thought, what a perfect name for it. So we had the sign made and it’s been there 27 years.” Fred and Jenny Cisler are gardeners who have created a wonderland of blooms and bright colors where yellow predominates. “It’s funny,” says Jenny. “From the time we were dating, Fred and I would drive around and it seemed like every house we saw that we liked was yellow with a black roof. And now we have one.” From the main house, which beams
at you from the street like a welcoming neighbor, to the relaxed “Summer House,” where a hand-painted yellow picnic table and benches form a cheery centerpiece, to the various yellow birdhouse feeders that dot the surrounding landscape, the sun always seems to be shining at this charming residence. And Saturday, July 18, you can see it for yourself during Pentwater’s Blooming Art Garden Walk, the annual event sponsored by the Garden Club of Pentwater in collaboration with the Pent-
water Arts Council, where you can tour many of the town’s spectacular gardens and enjoy artist demonstrations in the gardens and around the village. Whether you’ll see yellow flowers, however, is up to nature. “Every two weeks the garden changes,” notes Fred. “One flower disappears and another pops up.” “The garden took its own shape,” concurs Jenny. “It’s basically whatever way it wanted to go.” To Jenny, that’s one of the main at-

tractions about the art of gardening. “It’s always changing,” muses the pretty older woman with short-cropped white hair and a ready smile. “For instance, the birds bring stuff to the garden and some new flower or plant will pop up, and I’ll think, ‘I know I didn’t plant that! That’s what I love about gardening—the element of surprise.’” Relaxing at a round stone-tiled table in the Summer House, the Cislers recall how it all began. “In 2005, Jenny retired,” says Fred, a tall, genial man with a gray beard and sparkling eyes that indicate the joy he finds in their mutual hobby. “And I said to her, ‘So what would you like to do?’ And she said, “Oh, I think I’d like to garden more.’ And that,” he chuckles, “became the world’s biggest understatement!’” The couple worked for Western Land Services in Ludington for many years and traveled all over the country, whenever possible on their Harley. “We loved our Harleys,” grins Fred. “We had a great time. But we retired them a couple of years ago.” In 1981 they bought the Dari Crème in downtown Pentwater, which they sold in 1995. When they purchased the Dari Crème, Fred and Jenny became multi-mini entrepreneurs. They also bought the building across the street where they ran a number of businesses, including a bakery, art gallery and antique shop. In addition, they chartered sailboats and managed Channel Lane. “We tried all sorts of things,” laughs Jenny. “It was an experiment.” “There’s a lot of similarity between flowers and food,” Jenny reflects. “Both are, or can be, very

creative.” Take, for example, the concoction she came up with at the ice cream stand. “I guess you could say it had a sort of garden theme,” she laughs in recollection. “We called it the Dirt Sundae, and it was sprinkled with crushed Oreos and gummy
worms!” The Summer House—where, by the way, cookies and punch will be served on the garden tour—is a cozy, quirky oasis where Jenny’s personality is clearly evident. A sea shell mobile hangs from the ceiling fan. A white wicker sofa set sports black pillows with a tropi-
cal design, while a big metal ant sculpture next to the sofa peers over at you. The yellow picnic table and benches are peppered with all sorts of colorful artwork— a parrot on one side, a snail on another, palm fronds and a crescent moon on the legs—with small handprints made by her grandchildren, both of whom share her love of nature “Our youngest grandson, Colin Robey, wants to be an ornithologist and really does know his birds,” Jenny proudly observes. “He’s only 7, but he’s been immersed in his bird books for the last couple of years. His 9-yearold brother, Evan, actually made a map of my garden, drawing out the paths and numbering them. They’re both really interested in it, and help me with watering and weeding.” The Cislers have several gardens. The one in front, says Jenny, is Fred’s, and is indicative of his personality—more trimmed and structured. Then there’s “the pit,” a place farther back in their woods where castoffs go and “the myrtle, daffodils and rhubarb have taken over.” That’s also Fred’s domain and will become another garden. But the back garden—the one that will be the main attraction on the garden walk—is hers. It has a special name, indicated on a sign on the Summer House screen door: The Secret Garden. “I call it the Secret Garden because you don’t know it’s there if you’re just looking at the house from the street,” she explains. Indeed, it is a little like the Secret Garden in the story by the same name—a hidden piece of backyard paradise that evokes gasps of delight as you exit the summer

No injuries in condo fire PENTWATER — No one was injured in a small fire at the Spinnaker Condominiums, unit 325, in Pentwater early Tuesday morning, July 7. Pentwater Fire Chief Terry Cluchey said the fire started in an approximately 6-by-6-foot utility room where paint and aerosol cans had been stored. Cluchey said the woman living in the second-floor unit heard an explosion, which blew the door off the utility room. Cluchey said there was no gas leak. The unit suffered a scorched ceiling and had some water damage, but no water entered the lower level unit. Cluchey said less than 500 gallons of water was needed to extinguish the blaze. He did not believe any further investigation would be needed.

Weare Township planners OK Dollar General site plan Site plan approval for a new Dollar General Store on Monroe Road near Pentwater was granted by the Weare Township Planning Commission June 17. Weare Township Supervisor Dale Stevenson said Dollar General is targeting an opening for next spring.
Last April, Dollar General spokeswoman Crystal Ghassemi said Dollar General looks at a number of things when choosing new locations, including traffic patterns, competitive landscape, convenience, demographic trends and community concerns. The proposed discount retailer is considering
construction of a store in the vicinity of 68th Avenue and Monroe Road in Weare Township east of Pentwater. Ghassemi said the store would be of similar construction to all other Dollar General stores.

Patricia Collins named Citizen of the Year
The Pentwater Service Club has chosen Dr. Patricia Collins as Pentwater’s Citizen of the Year for 2015. Collins retired as the VP of Work Force Development at West Shore Community College where she was also served as Director of Nursing Program and was a two-time recipient of Community Service Award at WSCC. She has nearly 50 years combined service to the Pentwater School Board (15 or so years as president) and West Shore ESD Board. “Collins’ efforts on behalf of our community demonstrates the true sacrifice of a public servant and volunteer,” reads one of the numerous nominating petitions in Collins’ favor. “We have a tough decision to make every year because so many people are passionate about Pentwater and devote many hours to making our great place even better,” Mike Flynn, Citizen of the Year Committee chair, said. The petition continues, “Her volunteerism is known by many as she is everywhere there is a need. She is the first person to say yes when you call, or how can I help if you don’t call but she knows of a need. Her commitments to the community are especially evident in her church and in anything to do with education as a member of developing programs to support important initiatives such as early childhood programming, career and technical programs for secondary students.” Collins and her husband, Jim, moved to Pentwater in 1984 with their three children, Becky, Keith and Michael. Collins will be the featured guest in the Aug. 15 Pentwater Homecoming Parade and honored at a community dinner in September.

Many have enjoyed the new flavors of ice cream, according to Taber. “Michigan Pot Hole (sounds odd, but just think chocolate, chocolate, chocolate) was by far the favorite,” Tabor said. Salty Carmel and Blueberry Muffin Top are also highly recomended. “Our family is always planning new menu items and ice cream treats.” PB&Fudge brings together the House of Flavor’s homemade peanut butter fudge and hot fudge poured over creamy Michigan and vanilla soft serve, then smothered with Spanish peanuts. “Our staff is looking forward to working together again. Our daughter Kaity will be working right along with us as she has from the beginning 7 years ago.“It’s a family affair and we love it.”

As has been its tradition, the gallery will feature an exciting variety of artistic media by over 13 local artisans, including watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, pottery and ceramics, jewelry, weaving, fabric mosaics, woodworking and photography. First opening in Ludington in 1995, Art on the Town has a long and special history with area residents and visitors alike. The gallery relocated to Pentwater in 1999, eventually moving in 2009 to its current location at the southeast corner of Hancock and First streets. The goals of the gallery are to provide a showcase and market for local artisans, provide a venue for artisans to receive the stimulation of shared ideas, and promote art in the community. Returning artisans for the 2015 season are: Trudy Bergsten, Pentwater – pottery; Lynda Blankinship, Ludington – acrylic painting and jewelry; Jim Carney, Pentwater – photography; Debbie Cizmas, Pentwater – weaving; Kay Hanson, Ludington – watercolor painting; Hildy Montgomery, Pentwater – fabric mosaics; Larry Pazol, Mears – painted constructed pictures; Donna Renshaw, Pentwater – painting; Corrie Tameling, Shelby – fine art painting; Cass Schorsch, Ludington – jewelry; and Karen West, Pentwater – photography. Pet Hollywood Boutique and Spa has added a new associate to its growing business. Roxanne Wypych, of Pentwater Northern Light, Coldwell Banker and Pentwater Art Council supporter, has been one of Pet Hollywood’s loyal clients since it opened in October 2007. With problems faced in finding passionate grooming assistants, Roxanne offered to help Pet Hollywood owner Lori Turowski out. After knowing Roxanne’s “Zeus” for years and her love for four-legged family members, Lori thought Roxanne might be a good match. “Roxanne and Zeus have always been a joy to see coming into the salon and now with a growing boutique and spa, it was time to find the right individual to fill a much needed position,” Turowski said. “I hope we can grow Pet Hollywood together. The people’s pets need us.” Pet Hollywood also will be offering ID tags this summer so people can keep their pets safe with the proper tags and identification. The facility also carries Earthborn brand dog and cat food, West Paw Design, Lupin and Auburn Leather Crafters products along with Pet Flys and more.

Junior sailing program underway The Pentwater Junior Sailing Program is currently offering sailing classes through Aug. 14. The classes will be one week sessions for beginners and intermediate sailors. Children 12 years and under must take two weeks in the Prams (beginners), and be able to sail the Pram solo before moving up to the Sunfish (intermediate) class. Children must be able to swim 50 ft. without a swim aid to take part in the class. Beginner classes take place from 10-11:30 a.m. and two sessions of intermediate classes are offered from 12:30-1:45 p.m. and 2-3:15 p.m. Classes take place on the beach area next to the village boat launch ramp at 191 Lake St. The beach provides a smooth launch and landing area for the new sailors. The Pentwater Junior Sailing Program, is a 501 c3 instructional sailing program founded by Gene and Barb Davidson. Their dream was to start a sailing school that would provide an opportunity for all youth in the area to learn to sail. This organization serves the youth in the Pentwater community, those in surrounding areas and visitors. The junior sailing program also offers scholarship funding for students. Class fee is $75 per week, per child for children ages 8 to 18 with private lessens available for parents and younger children. The cost for a one-hour private lesson or a one hour “fun” sail is $30. Registration is available by visiting www. pentwaterjrsailing.org or the can be picked up from the box at 284 E. Lowell St. inside the breezeway porch. Boat rentals are not available. 12 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

can spark something new,” she acknowledges. “And ideas just come to me. This morning I woke up early and my brain went into gear, and I thought, ‘What I need to do is take those grasses in the crescent garden and move them to the front of the house because they’re getting too big. Then I’ve got smaller grasses that I can plant in their place.” Even though gardening is, in some ways, a full-time commitment that is definitely not
Jenny Cisler, far right, enjoys time in her garden with her nephew, Thomas Cisler, grandsons, Colin Robey and Evan Robey; and niece, Addison Daldos.
She pauses. “Although sometimes things don’t come back, and it’s sad. But that’s life.” The garden also constantly changes thanks to Jenny’s passion for replanting. “Sometimes something will grow too big for the space, or won’t do well in a certain area. So I’m always digging up things and putting them in another location. Fred jokes that when the plants see me coming, they yell, ‘Oh no! Here she comes with the shovel! And we just made new friends! Don’t move us again!’” Jenny says she gets some of her ideas from magazines like the Cottage Journal, Birds and Blooms and other gardeners’ bibles. “Even just a little thing that I see in a picture

house and come upon its treasures. “It all started 24 years ago with that Japanese maple over there,” Jenny points to a huge tree with black-red and orange leaves. “That was a gift to us from my mom on our 25th wedding anniversary. She was a big time gardener.” She looks up at the tall, thick-leafed tree. “It was supposed to be a bush! It fooled us all.” The garden is a beautifully landscaped creation where redwood chip pathways interweave with a wide variety of plants, trees and shrubs. From the beginning it was an evolving affair. “I had Ryan Patterson lay the rock for me,” Jenny says.“But that was the extent of my landscape planning.” There’s no end to the garden’s delights. A strange tree with twisted, gnarly limbs hidden by hanging bright green leaves has an equally strange name—Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick. “I don’t know where the name came from,” Jenny admits, although she’s aware of Sir Harry Lauder, the famed Scottish comedian of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Actually, the tree-also known as a European Filbert, was discovered in an English hedgerow in the 1880s. A basket of bright purple petunias hanging from a wrought iron hook post sparkles in the sun. “I added that for color,” says Jenny. She also added accoutrements that add a different kind of color. A little clay cat flowerpot, statuary of playful rabbits and frogs playing leap frog, a stone angel, an 18th century-style bird bath and another completely different bird bath, of free form stone with a twisting driftwood base, a chorus of wind chimes powered by a soft breeze—all provide a personality that makes the garden seem like a living, breathing being. The paths wind around black lace elderberry, climbing roses on a white trellis, variegated willow with white leaves sprinkled with pink and green, and a coincidentally matching variety, Sweet William, with its white flowers bursting with magenta centers. Lamb’s Ear—tallstemmed plants with purple buds that obviously got their name because they’re covered with a soft dusting of white that resembles a lamb’s coat—are both curious and enchanting to behold. A curving border of hostas, notes Jenny, will disappear, to be replaced in the spring by daffodils
“The Black-Eyed Susans aren’t here now,” says Jenny. “they’ll appear in a few weeks, and they’re like a carpet of sunshine. The Bleeding Hearts came and went—they don’t like July and August. But gardening, to me, is all about the excitement of seeing things come back. This is a perennial garden, so you know you’ll have peonies in June, Bee Balm and Black-Eyed Susans in August, Celadon poppies and daffodils in the spring.”
confined to spring and summer—“There’s always maintenance, and lots of planning year round,” Jenny notes—the joys far outweigh the challenges. “I couldn’t live anywhere if there wasn’t some kind of gardening for me to do. It is a healing thing—so peaceful. It’s a place that I can get away to, and create something beautiful that people can enjoy. No matter how many times I have to do it, it’s always rewarding.” The Blooming Art Garden Walk takes place Saturday, July 18, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost $10. Tickets with maps available at the Chamber of Commerce and July 18 at the top of the village green.
