Welcome to Pentwater

Pentwater is a special place, and we are lucky to call it home. Our paths to Pentwater brought us together and now our family is complete with our daughters, Sophia and Amelia. Andy moved to the area in 2001 as the photographer at the Oceana’s Herald-Journal. Man did he luck out with his first job! This is a beautiful area to photograph and enjoy in your spare time and then take more photographs. He was charmed by Pentwater’s beauty and bought a home here in 2009. Andy has since become the paper’s editor, but his love of photography has not diminished. He’s recognized around town for attending every event and always having his camera at his side. Patti was born in the area, but was raised in Ohio. After a family vacation to Pentwater and a visit with old family friends still in the area she was interested in moving back. In 2010, Patti relocated to Oceana County from Nashville, Tenn. to try her hand at organic farming. When not working in

the farm, Patti enjoyed visiting Charles Mears State Park and attending local events. That’s how she met Andy. She later sent him a recipe for his former cooking column, Andy’s mixed up, or was it Mixing it up with Andy? We were married in 2012 and now have two daughters, who we look forward to raising in Pentwater. This is such a special place for many reasons, but one of ours is the tight knit community. Sometimes a 15 minute walk takes over an hour because of running into so many friends along the way. In fact, friends happened by while we were taking this picture and jumped out to cheer us on. We feel very lucky to live in a place where people love to vacation. Sometimes we get away for an afternoon or just a few minutes and pretend we’re on vacation too. Enjoy this special village.

PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

The old red barn,

she’s just what she used to be Pentwater landmark is the gateway to past and present BY MARY BETH CRAIN PTW WRITER It’s 1862, and the little Village of Pentwater is quickly transitioning from a lumber settlement begun by Charles Mears and populated by a handful of

2 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

intrepid pioneers to a real live town. Every day there are exciting new developments. Mail is coming twice a week. Stores are springing up. You can even get across Pentwater River by ferry now; just a short time ago, the only way that trek was possible was via a team of oxen

owned by a Mr. W. P. Harding and was used by the whole community. The ferry fee, by the way, is five cents per person, 10 cents with a horse, 25 cents for a team and wagon, and two cents each for sheep and hogs. Lumber baron Charles Mears had his hand in every aspect of local life. He not only provides the industry that employs virtually all of the citizenry; he owns a slew of establishments, presides over local government, and is continually expanding his entrepreneurial horizons.

JULY 11 - JULY 18

Among his wide-ranging interests is horticulture, and he’s currently engrossed in an ambitious experiment: importing thousands of fruit trees from Chicago to see if he can create an orchard industry here. He succeeds with River House Farm, which will gain fame as a model fruit farm of the period. On a site overlooking Pentwater River and Pentwater Lake, Mears erects a house and a barn, for the family that runs the operation and the farm hands who board there. Fast forward 155 years. River House Farm is long gone. But there is one remnant of that rugged, rustic time that still remains. You can see it as you come up Monroe Road on your way into Pentwater. It’s the old red barn on your left, just past the now defunct Trading Post. Those unfamiliar with this area might not even notice it, or if they do, won’t give it a second thought. After all, it’s just another old barn, like so many that dot rural landscapes. But to those who love Pentwater, this barn is special. It beckons with a message: you’re getting close. Pentwater is just around the corner. You’re almost home. “The River House Barn will always be that signpost,” says Tammy Carey, executive director of the Community Foundation for Oceana County.“It will always say,‘You’ve arrived.’ When you see the barn, you know you’re here.” “To most people familiar with Pentwater, when they get off the highway at Monroe Road and see the barn, it’s ‘welcome home,’” agrees Ed Bigelow, director of the Pentwater Historical Society Museum. That’s why time, money and resources have been invested in a mission to save the River House Barn. And not only save it, but hopefully put it to good use once again. Six years ago, members of the Pentwater Historical Society and Pentwater Service Club joined forces with area volunteers and the Department of Natural Resources to clean up the overgrown premises on which the barn resides. Previously, the historical society had raised $40,000 to paint and re-roof the structure. This time, overgrowth brush and trees were removed. Tree expert Mike Russell donated his time and equipment, clearing out trees and bushes. Volunteers with trucks and trailers cleared the area of other debris and pulled vines off the building’s siding.

The barn is now visible for all to see. But the sorely needed facelift was just the beginning. Much still needs to be done to restore and maintain the structure, and possibly to transform it into a functioning venue. “The barn is part of the DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division,” notes Charles Mears State Park Supervisor Manny Valdez. “We co-manage it with the Wildlife Division. Currently the park uses the barn for storage. But there’s been a lot of discussion about utilizing it for other purposes, which would have to be approved by the DNR. “Lansing doesn’t want to put state resources into it because it’s considered more of a local landmark. So at this juncture, we want to raise awareness about the barn, to see how the community feels about putting more money into it.” After the initial repair job, the historical so-

ciety had $7,900 remaining in the budget earmarked for the barn. Not wanting to take on another long-term project, it recently turned the remaining funds over to the Community Foundation for Oceana County to establish a Pentwater Barn Preservation Fund. “The historical society had its hands full with the new museum,” Carey says. “They wanted someone to hold the money and create a project around it. Since the barn needed so much maintenance, they came to us. And we said, sure. That’s our role. The DNR doesn’t have the funds for maintenance that they have for the state parks. For smaller things like this, it’s up to the community to get involved. “The big piece that’s missing is that passionate group of people that needs to come

Service on the Green to feature minister/artist Rev. Stephen Marshall BY AMANDA DODGE PTW WRITER Rev. Stephen Marshall of Surprise, Ariz., as a guest of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Pentwater, will present his unique art-based sermon style during the non-denominational Service on the Green at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 16 on the Pentwater Village Green. Suzanne Richey, of the Centenary UMC worship design team, said she visited Marshall’s church in Arizona during the winter months. “I went to a number of his mosaic services, and I was realizing that this would fit into Pentwater so well,” Richey said.“We decided to invite him to come, and thought it was a long shot, but we found out he has done similar things before, and he was happy to do it. He and his wife, Susan, will spend about a week in town.” According to his biography, Marshall is “the son of a United Methodist minister…(and) grew up in the church, and after a career in the commercial art field, entered the ordained ministry. He is a graduate of Ottawa University and Fuller Theological Seminary. Richey explained that Marshall uses pastels on black paper, “so the color comes out very quickly.” She added that he will begin his sermon, and then take a break to draw for four to five minutes, while listeners reflect on what he said and music is played. She said that this repeats three times, until he finishes the drawing.“There is also a skit that is part of the art, that we will do before he draws and then there will be singing. The skit will reflect the theme for his drawing,” Richey said. “To draw what he does in 25 minutes is quite striking and amazing.” Richey said that the Service on the Green is very inclusive to all, and those who attend are asked to bring their own lawn chair. For more information on Marshall, visit his website at www.stevemarshallarts.com, or to watch some of his mosaic sermons online, visit www.youtube.com/ArtEvangelism.

Leave your mark on Pentwater In honor of the Village of Pentwater’s sesquicentennial celebration this summer, the village plans to bury a time capluse in Bell Park (next to the Pentwater Village Hall) Friday, Sept. 8. Pentwater DDA member and one of the time capsule organizers Claudia Ressel-Hodan will be on hand, and at many events throughout the summer to hand out specially made cards for people to fill out and they will be placed in the new time capsule. Five hundred cards (like the one to the right) were ordered, and Ressel-Hodan said she hopes that they will all be filled out. On one side of the card, it reads “My life in the Village of Pentwater is spent...”

and on the back “In 50 years, I hope Pentwater still has…” “The intent is for them to open it on their bicentennial in 2067,” she said. Ressel-Hodan added that the cards will also be available at the Pentwater Village Hall and the Pentwater Chamber of Commerce. According to a librarian friend of Ressel-Hodan’s, the cards should be filled out in pencil, because the Smithsonian institute did a study that discovered pencil will hold up longer than pen. Along with the cards, she said that people can put family pictures or a message to the future on a thumb drive to be placed in the time capsule. “I hope they have a thumb drive converter in the future,” Ressel-Hodan said. “It will be fun for those people to figure out how to open it and see those things.”

Bonsai garden highlights garden tour The Garden Club of Pentwater and Neighboring Communities will once again host their annual Blooming Arts Garden Tour Saturday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. This year’s tour highlight is a Bonsai garden at the Pat and Mike Mandjack residence along West Seapine Drive in Mears. The Mandjacks will be showcasing their Bonsai trees, some which are over 20 years old. Frank Galante will be playing renaissance music on lute and vihuela in the Mandjack’s garden. The tour also includes five additional gardens, four in Pentwater and one in Stony Lake. The Craig garden on Third Street in Stony Lake is a serene place to relax amid secluded patios surrounded by trees and an unexpected surprise that must be seen. Garden tour stops in the Village of Pentwater include the Davis garden on Rush Street. Kathy is a long time member of the garden club and her garden is a continuation of a garden started many years ago by her mother. The garden features a small frog and fish filled pond surrounded by nesting birds. Ceramic artists Karen Antrim and Bonnie Knapp will be showing their garden related works among the plantings. A new vegetable garden by the Shotwell family on East Hanover Street provides delicious veggies for the family and a chance for their son to hone is gardening skills. The garden also has herb filled planters surrounding their patio. On the corner of First and Carroll streets is Steve Bass’ beautifully manicured garden. In just its second year, it gives off the appearance of having been developed over many years. Surrounded by a low stone wall, it perfectly sits 10 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

in its village setting. Artist Dorothy LeBay will feature her hand built ceramic pieces here. Just outside the village on Crescent Drive in Madison Ridge is the DeGregorio/Galante garden. Set in the woods, Paula DeGregorio has strived

parks have a pavilion, but ours is too small. So the barn could play that dual role, in terms of both education and recreation.” Valdez also notes that the actual materials used to build the barn are important historical markers. “People who know about barns marvel at the beams and the construction, because they don’t make that kind of wood or do that kind of woodworking anymore.” A 2011 article about the barn in the Oceana’s Herald-Journal describes its construction. “Primary tools used to construct the barn were adz, ax and saw. Virgin stands of hardwoods were made into 44-foot lengths and then hand hewn into beams. Beams and rafters were then fastened together using wooden pegs. The roof rafters were made from tamarack posts. The hardwoods were trees said to

together to re-vision the barn. That’s the message we want to send out to the community. We need a group to come together, get familiar with the barn, and put together a dream of what it could be. That’s exciting work for a community foundation.” What might the barn be used for? “The foundation’s role is to provide advice around project management, fundraising, connections to grants and other potential funders, and to steward the resources,” she explains.“So we don’t make that decision. But we can offer input. I think the barn is a fantastic opportunity as a venue within its historical context to Pentwater. There aren’t that many venues in Oceana County that barns in other places provide. And when you look at Pentwater, where can you hold events? There aren’t a whole lot of options. The barn could be a wonderful place for weddings, fundraisers or theater. Or, it could simply be a historical landmark. That’s up to the community.” And what kind of money are we looking at? “The main structural problem now is there’s erosion on the west side, and the foundation, stone and concrete footings are crumbling,” Valdez observes. “I did have a local barn restoration company come in, but we’re waiting for an estimate as to what it would cost.” One thing’s for sure—it won’t be cheap. Which brings up two questions. One, where would the funds come from? “Donations, of course,” Valdez acknowledges. “But if there’s enough community interest, we can apply for grants.” And two, why put all this money into, when all is said and done, just another old barn? “The mission ofthe DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division is to provide education, along with recreational activities,” Valdez replies. “We are a source of information about the history of the area. So many visitors want to know why we’re called Mears State Park. The barn is important because Charles Mears has such a big legacy in this county. And we’re always getting questions from campers like, ‘Where can we have a reception or a family event?’ A lot of

have been growing before the American Revolution.” For Carey, the reason for investing a lot of resources into the barn is self-explanatory. “Do people want to arrive in Pentwater and see a McDonald’s? Or the old red barn?” Indeed, too many historical icons in this country have been systematically demolished in favor of “progress.” 155 years ago, or even 50 years ago, buildings had individuality and personality. That’s what made a city or a town unique. But with chain stores, restaurants, movie theaters and other cultural mainstays going the way of generic nonentity, preservation be-

comes more and more crucial, as the savior of the past, and of our very identity. “The barn was saved for a reason,” Carey reflects. “It was re-roofed for a reason. It was repainted for a reason. It became the property of the DNR for a reason. And I don’t think that reason is going away.” If you’re interested in becoming involved in the Pentwater Barn Preservation Project, contact Tammy Carey at 231-861-8335, www. oceana-foundation.org or Manny Valdez at 231-869-2051, valdezh@mich.gov.
