Charles was captured recruiting soldiers on British prison ships in New York but was released by General Nathanael Greene. 93 The Whole Works of the Right Rev. Jeremy Taylor: with a Life of the Author and a Critical Examination of his Writings (15 volumes) Rev. Jeremy Taylor.(1613-1667) London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green & Longmans; J Richardson; Hatchard and Son et al, 1839. 15 volumes, complete.; bound in full caramel calf with gilt tooling and titles to spines. $300-400 Footnote: Born in Cambridge in 1613, Jeremy Taylor was educated there through his university studies in theology. His eloquence attracted the attention of Archbishop William Laud, who made Taylor his chaplain and secured him a position as a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. Taylor chose the side of the King in the English Civil War. After the collapse of the royal cause, he became chaplain to the family of Lord Carbery and remained at his estate in Carmarthenshire, Wales, until Charles II took the throne in 1660. Among his eloquent writings, Liberty of Prophesying (1647) is a plea for toleration in matters of religion. It was followed by The Life of Christ (1649), Holy Living (1650), Holy Dying (1651), and a manual of devotion entitled, The Golden Grove (1655). Following the restoration of the Monarchy, Taylor’s loyalty was recognized, and he was made Bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor, in Ireland. He continued to contend for toleration, but his stance was out of fashion in a nation that had been wracked by civil war. His eloquent preaching is seen in his published sermons, including XXVIII Sermons (1651) and XXV Sermons (1653), as well as other, individual sermons. Taylor’s style in preaching and writing makes use of rich sensory imagery. He is the last of a “golden age” of preachers that included John Donne and Lancelot Andrewes. His writing consists of a wealth of allusions to biblical, patristic, and classical material. Despite Taylor’s unquestioned literary genius, he was not asked to take part in preparing the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. However, his eloquent prayers have been included in subsequent Prayer Books of the Anglican Communion.——Anglican Library

100 Venetian School (Italian, 17th century) First audience of his excellency the right honorable Charles, earl of Manchester with the Doge and Senate of Venice, 1698 oil on canvas 51 x 72in (129.5 x 182.9cm) $50,000-70,000 Footnote: Charles Montagu (1662-1722), 1st Earl of Manchester, a prominent figure in English political and diplomatic history, played a significant role during the tumultuous 17th century, a period marked by civil strife, the struggle for constitutional balance, and the interplay of European powers. In 1697, he was sent as an Envoy to Venice to negotiate the release of British sailors but was rebuffed. Returning to Britain the following year he was appointed to the privy council. In 1699 he was sent as English Ambassador to France where he remained until the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701. Montagu returned to Venice as Ambassador in 1707. Montagu’s mission was multifaceted: to affirm and strengthen the Anglo-Venetian alliance, to secure support against France in the unfolding scenarios of European politics, and to promote English trade interests. His tenure in Venice was marked by the high-wire act of diplomacy characteristic of the age. Montagu had to navigate the complex and often secretive world of Venetian politics, where behind the façade of the Republic’s famed neutrality, intense rivalries and alliances pulsed. He engaged with the Venetian Doge and the Senate, presenting England as a pivotal ally against mutual threats, notably Louis XIV’s expansionist ambitions. His efforts to foster a stronger Anglo-Venetian relationship were pivotal in maintaining the balance of power in Europe.

151 English School (16th/17th century) Portrait of King Edward VI, half length wearing a black and gold embroidered doublet oil on panel inscribed in Latin with his titles, civil and ecclesiastical, with date 154(7)? 29 x 22 1/4in (73.7 x 56.5cm) $30,000-50,000 Footnote: Edward VI (1537–1553) was King of England and Ireland from 28 January 1547 until his death in 1553. The only surviving son of Henry VIII by his third wife, Jane Seymour. He was crowned on 20 February 1547 at the age of nine after the death of his father. Edward was the first English monarch to be raised as a Protestant. During his reign, the realm was governed by a Regency council because Edward never reached maturity. The council was first led by his uncle Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset (1547–1549), and then by John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland (1550–1553). Edward took great interest in religious policy and though short, his reign is notable for the transformation of the Church of England into a recognizably Protestant body, for which he was praised by European protestants. It was a change which his sister Mary, who succeeded him as Queen of England, was unable to reverse. As the male heir to the throne and the securer of the Tudor dynasty, a number of portraits of him exist both as Prince of Wales and as King. The earliest portrait type of the young prince was developed by Hans Holbein (1497/8-1543), who had painted celebrated portraits of both King Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, and who made a drawing of Edward VI in circa 1539-40, when Edward was two years old (The Royal Collection, Windsor Castle).

393 Venetian School (17th/18th century) Battaglia dei Pugni, Ponte San Barnaba oil on canvas 38 1/2 x 58in (97.8 x 147.3cm) $30,000-50,000 Footnote: Beginning in the late 14th century and lasting until the early 18th century, staged battles or battagliola, consisted of factions of working men battering each other with wooden sticks in hours of chaotic melees. The first mention of these Venetian stick battles dates from the late 14th century but they apparently did not begin to occur on bridges until the first quarter of the 15th century. The events were of such renown that the Venetian government arranged them for honored guests. In 1574 a bridge battle conducted by 600 Venetian artisans was arranged for the French King Henry III. During the 16th and 17th centuries the spectacles grew in size and significance. Several times a year Venetian workers and tradesmen would gather on particular Sundays or holiday afternoons to fight for possession of a bridge. These organized encounters were also called battagliole sui ponti (little battles on the bridges). The battles would take several forms from individual duels and small-scale brawls for a few hundred or thousand onlookers to large scale displays prepared days in advance and held for hours in front of tens of thousands of spectators. Ponte dei Pugni (Bridge of Fists) is considered one of the most famous “fighting bridges” in Venice, located near Campo San Barnaba in Dorsoduro. The top of the bridge has the impression of four footprints, marking the starting position of the fighters when rival clans would gather to fight and throw each other in to the canal. The rivalry between the Nicolotti and the Castellani clans at the bridge dates back to the 14th century.

486 A Margaret Bruton terrazzo, cream painted and lacquer low table probably supplied by Frances Elkins mid-20th century Signed with the artists initials MB. height 13in (33cm); width 31in (104cm); depth 31in (104cm) $4,000-6,000 Footnote: Margaret Bruton (1894-1983) was born to Daniel Bruton (1839–1928) of Dublin, Ireland, and Helen Bell (1866–1956) of Belfast, Ireland in Brooklyn New York. She was the eldest of three sisters, including Anne Esther Bruton Gilman (1896–1992) and Helen Bruton (1898–1985). Helen Bruton, Sr. valued creativity and education and Margaret and her sisters were encouraged to pursue their artistic talents from a young age. This nurturing environment laid the foundation for what would become Margaret Bruton’s prolific career in painting, muralism, printmaking, and mosaics. The family eventually moved from New York to Alameda, California. Margaret began her artistic studies at what is now the San Francisco Art Institute in 1913, where she worked under Frank Van Sloun. That same year she won a scholarship during a competition organized by the Art Students League of New York. Back in New York, she refined her skills under the guidance of artists Robert Henri and Frank Vincent Dumond from 1914 to 1918. In the early 1920s, Margaret Bruton moved to Monterey, California, attracted by the scenic beauty and the opportunity to study with artist Armin Hansen. The Bruton family eventually settled there, building a house and studio where they spent many summers. Margaret was associated with the Monterey Group of painters who were meeting at the Robert Louis Stevenson House. Margaret gained recognition through various shows, such as a group exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum in 1923 where she won a $100 prize. She also received accolades at the Santa Cruz Art League in 1925. She and her sisters undertook international trips, visiting England, France, Italy. Around 1929, Margaret embarked on an artistic journey to New Mexico (Taos and Santa Fe). She spent a year studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Her studies and travels honed her artistic style, blending realism, modernism and avant garde influences to create a diverse, vibrant body of work. The Bruton sisters received commission for important public art projects funded by the WPA, culminating in their masterful execution of a bas relief mural The Peacemakers for the entrance to Treasure Island’s Court of the Pacific at the 1939 Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. They were paid $20,000 for the mural (nearly $450,000 today), an astonishing sum to earn in the final year of the Depression. About 1940, Margaret Bruton pivoted away from painting and began creating colorful, mortar-andstone terazzo mosaic tabletops including some for clients of influential interior decorator Frances Adler Elkins who had her design studio Casa Blanca in the Robert Louis Stevenson House. Margaret would design the tabletops and the decorator or homeowner would choose the bases. An identical table is illustrated S. Powell, Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer, New York, 2023, pp. 232-233. Together, Bruton sisters earned commissions for cruise ships, churches, cemeteries and universities as well as the Fleishacker Zoo and hotels including the Royal Hawaiian Hotel for which Margaret created 47 terazzo tabletops for a lounge, commissioned by Frances Elkins. Three cafe tables created by Margaret Bruton matching those created for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel lounge can be found at the Filoli Garden House overlooking the Sunken Garden in Woodside, California. Margaret also created the Monterey Harbor monument plaque at entrance of Fisherman’s Wharf. In 1953 Margaret Bruton was hired to create a mural for the lobby for the Standard Federal Savings and Loan Building in Los Angeles. Her abstract imagery executed in hues of green and gold evoked currency and finance. During a subsequent renovation, the mural was removed and lost. The current owner of the building hired a firm to recreate the work based on extant images and the replica was installed in place of the original in 2021. We would like to thank Wendy Van Wyck Good, author of Sisters in Art: The Biography of Margaret, Esther, and Helen Bruton, 2021, for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Helen’s studies at the University of California, Berkeley and the Arts Students’ League, New York, under the guidance of the likes of Alexander Calder and Boardman Robinson as well as her international travels exposed her to a host of varied artistic media and styles. It is possible the owner requested a modification in the design of the chair to suit their personal aesthetic.

Vargas (1874-1959) dating to 1908. Falconer 1908 penned to the front free end board. Max Vargas is considered the initial well spring of documentary photography in southern Peru. He began his celebrated career at the early age of 16, participating in the then thriving art scene in and around his home city of Arequipa. Vargas later studied in Paris then returned to Arequipa where he opened a formal photo studio as well as operated a thriving photo print and postcard business. The photographic prints are laid to stiff album boards and measure 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.(16 1/2 x 21 1/2 cm.) prints. The second album continues the ca. 1908 South American travels of the Keith-Falconers with over 200 photographs from southern Peru and Bolivia passing through Chile to the south, with touches into Paraguay and Argentina, mostly urban an archaeological sites are the subject matter for most of the images, but with some intense interest in the existing and developing railroad lines of the time. The third album dated earlier than the previous (1898) enters the South American continent via Caracas, Venezuela with a 15 photos of mostly rural railway lines there and environs; followed by 12 images from Haiti in and around Port au Prince; then off to Guadalajara and Mexico City and south into the southern state of Oaxaca (57 photos) to the ancient archaeological sites Monte Alban and Mitla.
