Jack & ellen Phillips
Andrew Jones Auctions is thrilled to have been chosen to offer a time capsule collection of over 550 lots of important California plein air paintings, Americana, clocks, fine silver, antiques, Native American works and decorations amassed quietly over fifty years from Jack and Ellen Phillips, San Diego County, California. Jack, a Naval engineer and Ellen, a school teacher, high school sweethearts from Colton, California, married in 1961 and a year later they began their collecting journey together. The first purchase in their inventory ledger was a Victorian hanging lantern that cost $85.
After spending time in Texas and Washington D.C., the Phillips’ returned to California and found their dream home on Mt. Helix in La Mesa in the 1970s. There, they enjoyed spending time with friends and neighbors, their dogs, books and building their collection of fine art and antiques. Their academic nature and inquisitiveness allowed Jack and Ellen Phillips to explore and research in order to make shrewd acquisitions by understanding each item’s history. Over the decades their eyes sharpened and tastes were honed to develop a broad, well rounded selection of antiques, fine art, decorations and accessories.
The Phillips collection features a comprehensive group of California Impressionist paintings. Led by Guy Rose’s View from Arroyo Terrace, Pasadena, painted circa 1915, this auction offers a survey of the Southern California landscape and its distinctive light from coast to desert, high mountains to rolling foothills. Complimented with antiques and accessories, this collection is a look into history; artistic, ecological and human.

Footnote: edgar Alwin Payne was born in the heart of the ozark Mountains in southwest Missouri in 1883. Payne worked as a traveling carpenter and commercial painter eventually making his way to chicago where he very briefly attended the Art institute of chicago. Preferring to develop his talent through experience rather than structured curriculum, Payne began traveling around the country in search of new subject matter.
in 1909 Payne found himself in laguna Beach and was struck with renewed inspiration before the coastal landscape. over the next thirteen years, he spent his time between chicago and the california coast and in 1918 established a studio in laguna Beach where he founded the laguna Beach Art Association and served as its first president. during his time in california, he developed friendships and working relationships with artists including Jack w ilkinson smith, F. Grayson sayre and conrad Buff.
in 1922 Payne set off for a two year painting tour of europe working in Brittany, Paris, Provence, switzerland, and Venice. captivated by the sea, he painted scenes of ships on the open water, ocean coasts and boat-filled harbors in an impressionist style. his most significant european works were executed in France and were met with immediate artistic and financial success. Payne’s rendering of sailboats employs a geometric composition of solid colors with an interplay of tones evoking the nuances of sunlight.
in 1941 Payne wrote Composition of Outdoor Painting, a comprehensive book on composition and composition forms. the book also explains landscape painting techniques, color, repetition, rhythm, and value. this book is still considered by many artists to be foremost manual on landscape composition.

Footnote: Granville redmond was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1871. He contracted scarlet fever at around the age of three and when he recovered, he was found to be deaf. this likely prompted his family’s decision to move from the east coast to san Jose, california so he could attend education the Berkeley school for the deaf. during his term at the school, 1879-1890, redmond’s artistic talents were recognized and encouraged. upon his graduation, he enrolled in the california school of design where he studied under Arthur Frank Mathews and Amédée Joullin. in 1893 redmond won a scholarship to attend the Académie Julian in Paris. in 1895, redmond’s painting Matin d’Hiver was accepted for the Paris salon. in 1898, he returned to california and settled in Los Angeles. while living in Los Angeles, he became friends with charles chaplin, who admired the natural expressiveness of a deaf person using American sign Language. chaplin asked redmond to help him develop the techniques chaplin later used in his silent films. through chaplin he met Los Angeles neighbor artists elmer wachtel and norman st. clair. they showed works at the spring exhibition held in san Francisco in 1904.
Granville redmond’s depictions of poppy fields are among his most popular and sought-after subjects. in Rolling Hills with California poppies, redmond creates a beautiful vista with brilliant orange poppies, executed with quick and distinct brushstrokes and masterfully layered in a delicate palette. this work exemplifies his technique of the rule of thirds, where the scene is separated into foreground, middle ground and sky, or in this instance mountains, thus creating breathtaking depth in the composition. in this work, redmond’s distinctive style, blending characteristics of impressionism, Pointillism and tonalism, creates a stunning exploration of the contrasts of light and atmosphere in the varied southern california landscape.

Provenance: w ith stendhal Gallery, Los Angeles, california, 1971. Footnote: Born and raised on his family’s sunny slope estate, Pasadena, california, Guy orlando rose would ultimately return to the san Gabriel Valley in 1914 and and remain there until his death in 1925. rose began his early artistic education in san Francisco and later traveled to Paris in 1888 and enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he would study for three years. He lived in France for twelve years, spending much of his time in Giverny where he was heavily influenced by friend and mentor claude Monet, who resided there at the time and was closely acquainted with other American artists Alson clark, Frederick Frieseke and richard e. Miller.
After his return to southern california, rose embraced the local landscape and its subtle yet majestic qualities which reminded him of the Giverny countryside. By the time of his 1916 exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum, rose’s reputation as an impressionist painter was well established. the sweeping vista of the valley in View from Arroyo Terrace, Pasadena, with its broad, verdant orange groves interspersed with palm trees against the looming backdrop of the san Gabriel Mountains captures a moment in time and the grandeur of the landscape rose knew so well. the palms dwarfed by the mountains illustrate the scope and scale of the scene. the viewer can sense the cottony clouds passing overhead, created by gentle taps of the brush, while their cast shadows glide gently over the mountains. the palm branches, painted with confident strokes, rustle in the breeze with dappled yellow highlights of sun across the trees on the valley floor.
