Phyllis Israelson and Stuart Moldaw met at their freshman mixer the first week of class at Syracuse University. After dancing with Phyllis, Stuart went back to his dorm and told his roommate, “I’ve met the woman I want to be the mother of my children.” Growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts, Stuart served in the Navy when the atomic bombs were deployed on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, attending college on the G.I. Bill. Phyllis, from Portland, Maine, attended college straight out of high school. Stuart studied economics and business at Syracuse, Phyllis, English literature. Phyllis’s beauty, graciousness and steady values had Stuart hooked from the get-go; characteristically, Phyllis took her time to assess her ardent suitor. They married in 1950 after graduating college.
In 1955 Phyllis and Stuart with their two-year old daughter embarked on the adventure of their lives and moved from the East Coast to California, where Stuart was a district manager for Lerner Shops and opened stores for the company. Phyllis wrote home to her parents that the trip from New York to California was “thrilling.” In Los Angeles she saw “oranges and apples and onions the size of grapefruit.” After several months they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they remained. A second daughter was born. By 1958, Stuart started Country Casuals, the first of his many companies. He was full of ambition and Phyllis was full of faith in her husband, a faith that encouraged and motivated him. Stuart always said that success depended on intelligence, hard work, and luck—and he knew that part of his luck was in having met and married Phyllis. They shared their lives with earnest enthusiasm, engaging in a wide range of civic, cultural, and charitable activities. By the mid-1970s, Stuart was active in both California and national Democratic politics. Phyllis was renowned for her public speaking on behalf of Israel. They discovered that they both, but Phyllis in particular, had a keen and refined eye for beauty. She started working with the legendary San Francisco interior designer, Anthony Hail, even before she and Stuart built their dream-house in 1981, designed by architect Goody Steinberg. Phyllis learned from Tony how to mix colors and fabrics and fine porcelain. She was eager to know the provenance and historical context of each piece she and Tony picked together to fill the interior of her new home. As her knowledge and expertise grew, she found herself especially drawn to fine China and silver. Her collection of Famille Rose porcelain had pride of place but her taste was encompassing, including beautiful settings of Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica, Meissen and Herend. Her collection of silver was equally eclectic, spanning Victorian pieces, Puiforcot, and William van Erp. Over time, Stuart and Phyllis’s interests expanded, along with their collections. Stuart remained passionate about and active in liberal Democratic politics his entire life. Together, they were great supporters of the community, helping to establish the Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Moldaw Residences, part of the Taube Koret Campus for Jewish Life. Lifelong supporters of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, they co-founded The Moldaw-Zaffaroni Boys and Girls Club of East Palo Alto. For many years Phyllis enjoyed what she named “The Nana Project,” taking girls from the Club to see The Nutcracker at the San Francisco Ballet each December. Lunch with the girls in the Opera House before the performance was a favorite occasion.
Stuart and Phyllis Moldaw built their collection the way they built their lives: with conviction and discernment. It is a personal testament to the commingling of two independent but harmonious sensibilities as well as a rare treasure trove.
