Tree Emergency Framework kaira looro architecture competition | emergency operations center - R E W WA N S I A 8 8 8 -
5.
A
The project is an incremental architectural framework that can be easily understood, thus encouraging involvement from everyone from the community to build a public space, cultivating sense of ownership and collective resilience. This quality can be very meaningful when people face hard and stressful situations; the collective effort of architecture gives community purpose and hope.
4.
Tree is chosen as the heart of the project because of its significant cultural value of gatherings under a tree, being an anchor for the framework. The tree offers an immediate natural enclosure sheltering since before architecture starts. This immediacy is critical so that communities do not have to wait for land-delivered support. The architecture starts from simple poles, addition of wall modules, overlaying of earth, incrementally becoming a more permanent structure. As much as the architecture presents itself as a built structure, the process of making and adding is equally as important; the process is the architecture.
the vast shed roofing allows water collection in time of drought, vessels are put under the water drop-lines
water-proof tarp material allow water to run-off the roof surface
frame structure of the shed becomes infrastructure to add more appliances (e.g. artificial lighting)
intermediary courtyard allows open space with added community protection from outside, allowing informal activities to take place spontaneusly, gathering under a tree joinery between members are mostly done with plants roots to tie them together, sourced naturally from surroundings
tree branches walls create space division with lightness, allowing air to circulate earth are added onto the tree branches walls where visual privacy is needed while adding robustness to its structural property
gaps between the wall and the roof allows cross ventilation from outside to the courtyard
slight overhang on the edges of the roof creates a verandah-like space
