About LCSD

INTRODUCTION

The objectives of the information design system to maintain the uniform design standards and strengthen the corporate identity. This manual outlines the proper design rules on showcasing the information of the event calendar of some departments underLeisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

ABOUT LCSD

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), is a department in the Government of Hong Kong. It reports to the Home Affairs Bureau, headed by the Secretary for Home Affairs. It provides leisure and cultural activities for the people of Hong Kong, which was also one of the tasks of the former Urban Council, Regional Council and Home Affair Bureau. It manages various public facilities around Hong Kong including public libraries, swimming pools, and sports centres. The well-known Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong Space Museum are among several museums also managed by the department. It was established in 2000.

Hong Kong Space Museum The Museum has two thematic exhibition halls: the Hall of Space Science and the Hall of Astronomy on the ground and first floors respectively. The exhibits, predominately interactive, enable visitors to learn through a series of entertaining and educational experiences. The Museum organises plenty of extension activities each year, including Astronomy Carnival, Astronomy Happy Hours, fun science lab sessions, astronomy competitions, lectures and astronomy film shows, etc. You can also find a lot of information related to stargazing, basic astronomy, astronomical news and educational resources in the Museum's homepage.

Hong Kong Museum of History The museum aims to be an active platform that engages the public with the stories of the city, the country, and the world as a whole. By inspiring the public to go farther and deeper into culture and history, they aim to stimulate audiences to look beyond our own history and to better appreciate the experiences of others. This is an open platform accessible to all so that everyone can learn, share and enjoy. They collect, preserve, research, interpret and exhibit collections related to the history of Hong Kong and South China. They aim to engage the audiences with the unique stories of Hong Kong and stimulate the audiences to explore the history of China and the rest of the world. They communicate with the audiences in ways that go beyond simply presenting historical facts, offering inspiration through diverse curatorial approaches and exciting programmes.

Hong Kong Public Libraries The provision of public library service in Hong Kong is the responsibility of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The Department aims to provide public library services to meet the community's need for knowledge, information and research, to support life-long learning, continuous education and profitable use of leisure time, and to promote local literary arts. Extension Activities form an integral part of library services. The educational and recreational programmes such as reading programmes, storytelling for children, book displays, exhibitions and subject talks organised throughout the year at the libraries all contribute to promote the use of library facilities, inculcate life-long reading habits and to enhance the public appreciation of the importance of free access to up-to-date information. The libraries also play an active role in promoting literary arts in Hong Kong. Literary awards and competitions, the Hong Kong Literature Festival and a wide range of literary activities are regularly organised.

PREFACE

Event Calendar are published regularly in the branches department of LCSD, especially, museums and libraries. It aims at providing the detail information of events which organised by the corresponding department, such as the event name, date, time, day of the week, venue and remarks etc. For Hong Kong Public Libraries, it publishes once a month whereas Hong Kong Public Museums publishes quarterly.

It is a common OpenTypetm, a cross-platform format that provides richer linguistic support through widely expanded character sets and advanced layout features, which has high legibility and readablity. Myriad Pro was published by Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly in 1992. Myriad pro are both installed in MacOs and Microsoft. Avoid using condensed Myriad pro.

The Noto Sans CJK font family included 7 different weight and it is an openType which included 65,535 glyphs. It contain simple graphical line with high legibility and readibility. It is clear to display on screen and printed material. Avoid using Thin Noto Sans CJK.

1 Always use british spelling and style rules. Centre; not center. Organize; not oraganise. 2

Range should be indicated with en dashes: 09:00 –12:30 (figure 62) (with thin spaces before and after the en dash). Compounds also use en dashes: human—computer interaction.

Never use dumb quotes (figure 60) (straight quotes) for quotation, but smart quotes (figure 61) (curly quotes, typographer’s quotes or proper quotation marks)

Contractions do not have full points. For the prefix of people's name, use british style honorifics Mr Chan; not Mr. Chan. When the last letters are different, such as professor, the last letter is not f, therefore, Prof. (with a full point) will be used.

5 Abbreviated names should be written in capitals with no full points but only a word space between initial letters: Warren A Keller, W L Chan. 6 Avoid underlinning or italics for emphasis. Use bold for emphasis. 7

If there are more than two organizing dates, dates will be displayed on the same row and divide by an en space. The maximum numbers of dates in a row is five. Days of the week and time will be placed in the next row.

SPACING GUIDELINE FOR EVENT COLUMNS English

There are several widths of spaces can be accessed in InDesign. To maintain the legibility of the event column, It is necessary to adjust the spaces carefully, especially, the space before and after punctuation, such as endash. In term of the Event Calendar, there are three widths of spaces have been applied, emspace, non-breaking space and 1/8 thin space. The examples below showed the instruction of inserting spacing for the event calander.

To avoid the irregular spacing between event items, it is important to set the standard for the spacing between event items. There are Four standards widths of spacing between 3–9 mm for placing the event items. Besides, the space before and after divider are fixed to 1 mm. If images are applied, space after will be adjusted to 0 mm.

PAPER CHOICE

A good paper choice offer user an experiences on the tacile. The right paper choice will enhance the context and performance of the event calendar, such as the legibility. There are two fixed paper choices for offset printing, or self-printing.
