Apple profit 'biggest in history'

Apple's China sales are up 70%

US technology giant Apple has reported the biggest quarterly profit ever made by a public company.

Apple reported a net profit of $18bn (£11.8bn) in its fiscal first quarter, which tops the $15.9bn made by ExxonMobil in the second quarter of 2012, according to Standard and Poor's.

Record sales of iPhones were behind the surge in profits.

Apple sold 74.5 million iPhones in the three months to 27 December - well ahead of most analysts' expectations.

In a conference call with financial analysts Apple's chief executive Tim Cook said that demand for phones was "staggering".

However, sales of the iPad continued to disappoint, falling by 22% in 2014 from a year earlier.

The demand for Apple's larger iPhone 6 Plus model appeared to help boost profits and increase the iPhone's gross profit margin - or how much Apple makes per product - by 2% to 39.9%.

However, Apple did not give a breakdown of sales for the iPhone 6 and other models.

Apple shares rose more than 5% in trading after the US markets had closed.

Buster Hein, who edits the "Cult of Mac" website, told the BBC that iPhone sales had surpassed expectations.

"Oh my gosh, it's unbelievable," he said. "I mean, a lot of us were expecting good iPhone sales during the holidays, but I don't think anybody really thought Apple was going to blow past 70 million units sold," he said.

"Apple became the number one smartphone company in China in the last quarter, which was just huge for them," he added.

BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said the iPhone had "transformed the mobile phone industry".

"Others have a bigger share of the market - Samsung, for instance, actually sells more phones than Apple - but Apple makes just an extraordinary amount of money from this one phone.

"A lot of this, at the moment, is about China, where this brand has got extraordinary cachet. They [Apple] sold more phones in China in the last quarter than they have in the United States."

He added that one possible shadow on Apple's future was the question of whether the firm could repeat the success of the iPhone.

"The next one [product] that's supposed to be coming along is the Apple Watch in April," he said. "I've got some doubts as to whether that will be the mass market success, beyond the geek population, that the iPhone has been."

Currency woes

Apple's revenue grew to $74.6bn in 2014 - a 30% increase from a year earlier.

Google and Uber may become rivals

Uber has announced plans to research self-driving cars, which could put it head to head with Google.

Google launched a driverless car division in 2010.

Uber is teaming up with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA, to fund the Uber Advanced Technologies Center, it said in a blog post.

In turn, Google may be mulling over plans to roll out its own car-hailing service, according to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg quoted a source close to Uber's board of directors who claimed it had been shown screenshots of an app-based cab service, which Google already oﬀers to staﬀ.

Google has been contacted by the BBC for comment but tweeted in response to the article:

"We think you'll find Uber and Lyft work quite well. We use them all the time."

In 2013, Google invested around $250m (£166m) in Uber, which now operates in more than 200 cities worldwide but has faced controversy over the way in which it vets its drivers following the rape of a customer in Delhi.

Uber's new research partnership will also look at maps and car safety technology, the firm said.

"The partnership will provide a forum for Uber technology leaders to work closely with [Carnegie Mellon University] faculty, staﬀ, and students — both on campus and at the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) — to do research and development, primarily in the areas of mapping and vehicle safety and autonomy technology," said Uber.

Rikki Poynter explains the launch of her campaign

YouTube has told Newsbeat it "fully admits" that automatic subtitles, or closed captions, for deaf and hard-ofhearing users are "by no means good enough yet".

The firm added improving them is "a big priority".

The pledge comes as a campaign launched by hard-of-hearing vlogger Rikki Poynter continues to win support.

She says the automatic service "makes absolutely no sense 99% of the time".

YouTube recently launched a community caption service, allowing vloggers' fans to caption videos for them.

Within days of Tyler Oakley's video supporting Rikki's campaign going online, there were over 2,000 caption submissions in 70 diﬀerent languages.

According to Mr Glotzbach, 25% of YouTube's content has some form or closed captioning.

This is mostly made up of automatic subtitles.

Talking about plans to improve the system he added: "This is a big priority.

"I announced the initial work on our captioning systems at VidCon last year.

"We announced that it was one of our top priorities and that we would be aggressively working on it. And that commitment continues.

Other high profile vloggers have shown support for Rikki.

Oﬃcials say the outcome sends a clear message to others. But with millions of dollars amassed by Ulbricht in just two years, the online underworld was and remains a lucrative arena.

It is a fluid, mercurial environment. Within days of its closure in 2013, other Silk-Road rivals emerged in what has become a depressing game of "whack-a-mole" for the authorities.

Collectively, the only lesson these sites appear to have learnt thus far: the need for caution. Today's "darknet" administrators are more guarded in their dealings with their customers.

Whether today's verdict will prompt them to revise their strategy more widely is questionable.

Defence lawyer Joshua Dratel argued in closing statements that Ulbricht had started Silk Road but quit soon after creating it.

The trial had heard that Ulbricht was the "perfect fall guy" for the true owners of the website.

But Assistant US Attorney Serrin Turner argued Ulbricht was willing to do anything to protect Silk Road.

Emails showed a man willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on contracted killings to remove threats from the operation, the lawyer said.

BBC suspends 'Top Gear' host Jeremy Clarkson

LONDON (AP) — The BBC said Tuesday it has suspended "Top Gear" host Jeremy Clarkson following a "fracas" with a producer.

Let go of resentments

Resentments are sneaky, tricky little things. They can convince us they’re justified. They can dry up our hearts. They can sabotage our happiness. They can sabotage love.

Most of us have been at the receiving end of an injustice at some time in our lives. Most of us know someone who’s complained of an injustice we’ve done to him or her. Life can be a breeding ground for resentments, if we let it.

Maybe you were. But harboring a resentment isn’t the solution. If it was, our resentment list would resemble the Los Angeles telephone directory. Deal with your feelings. Learn whatever lesson is at hand. Then let the feelings go.

Resentments are a coping behavior, a tool of someone settling for survival in life. They’re a form of revenge. The problem is, no matter who we’re resenting, the anger is ultimately directed against ourselves.

Well, there ya go.

We’re the ONLY animal (note emphasis on *only*) that tries to get by with one long stretch of sleep. And, even that less than optimal practice is a relatively recent development (thanks, Industrial Revolution!).

It’s really quite simple: Despite what our culture considers normal these days, it makes *no* sense to think we should be able to function optimally with one session of snoozing.

And, get this: “By the first century B.C., the Romans had divided their day into periods designated for specific activities, such as prayer, meals and rest. Midday became known as sexta, as in the sixth hour (noon by their way of counting), a time when everyone would go to bed. The word has survived in the familiar term siesta.”

How cool is that?

I never knew that the word siesta can be traced back to the “sixth hour” of the old-school Roman day reserved for midday rest! (Did you?)

Me likes.

Mednick tells us that, although midday naps were common throughout Europe before the industrial revolution, they slowly started disappearing as the well-engineered clock allowed for more precise scheduling and we all started living our lives according to its pace rather than our own natural rhythms.

I say it’s time to bring back some of our natural rhythms!

ABSOLUTE SYNCHRONY

“It’s important to keep your biological clock in absolute synchrony with your daily routine. In this way the hours you spend in bed will correspond with the sleepy phase of your circadian rhythm and the hours you spend out of bed will correspond with the awake phase of your circadian rhythm. The only way to do this is to maintain a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every day, seven days a week.”

Let’s make a note of an important word in that first sentence. (Hint: It was “absolute.”)

—> “It’s important to keep your biological clock in absolute synchrony with your daily routine.”

I’ve learned to take great teachers at their literal word. When conservative scientists use a word like “absolute” I pay attention.

If we want to optimize our lives, we need to create rhythms. There’s no more important rhythm to rock than our circadian rhythm. And, there’s no better way to get in harmony with that then to be ABSOLUTELY consistent with our routines, maintaining “a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every day, seven days a week.”

Alexandra and I have been having a lot of fun dialing this in. It’s not easy. (States obvious.)

The #1 key for us?

What we call a “digital sunset.” The sun goes down and all of our electronics and bright lights go oﬀ with the setting sun—allowing us to slow down and honor the ending of the day. We even bought dorky blue-light blocking glasses (these ones) and some awesome no-blue-light lights so we can play nice with our melatonin.

I used to jack myself up at night checking out ESPN.com or watching a Jon Stewart/Colbert episode (or ten) on my iPhone but even when I wore the blue-light blocking glasses, my sleep was sub-optimal.

Now we have an early dinner, get the little man ready for bed, go on our nightly walk around town and put him to bed super early then do our night-time routine and hop in bed shortly after we put him down. It’s a sort of sport for me to see if I can get to bed by 7pm this winter. :)

Then what?

Then I pop out of bed 4am-5am feeling like a rock star on an energy drink (uh... a little more mellow than that but you get the idea :), smiling at the start of the new day, taking 5 deep breaths as I think of all that’s amazing in my life and go get at it.

P.S. Yes, our routines are extreme. But only because we live in such a nutty society. As Krishnamurti tells us (see Notes on Think on These Things): “It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”

P.P.S. Come on. What are you really staying up late for? To watch TV? Surf the Internet/check your email + Facebook one more time? Um... Yah. We can do better than that, no? (And, you couldn’t pay me to do that stuﬀ any more. Feeling GREAT when I wake up + throughout the day feels *way* better than any late night soulnumbing activities ever could!)

As Seneca says (see Notes on Letters from a Stoic): “How much better to pursue a straight course and eventually reach that destination where the things that are pleasant and the things that are honorable finally become, for you, the same.”

THE FOUR GOLDEN RULES OF SLEEP

“1. Get an adequate amount of sleep every night.

2. Establish a regular sleep schedule.

3. Get continuous sleep.

4. Make up for lost sleep.”

Dr. Maas has an entire chapter dedicated to unpacking those golden rules. Great stuﬀ.

The short story?

“1. Identify the amount of sleep you need to be fully alert all day long and get that amount every night.”

Note: “At minimum most people absolutely need to obtain at least sixty to ninety minutes more sleep than they presently get.”

How much sleep is it for you? For me it’s 8-9 hours. (I feel rejuvenated just saying that. haha.)

btw: I was originally inspired to go for 9 after attending a Conscious Capitalism event where Tony Schwartz (coauthor of The Power of Full Engagement (see Notes)) was keynoting. He’s one of the world’s leading experts on Energy. He said he gets 9 hours of sleep. That was good enough for me!

“2. Go to bed at the same time every night, and wake up without an alarm clock at the same time every morning, including weekends. That’s 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Regularity is important for setting and stabilizing your internal sleep-wake clock.”

If you sleep in on the weekends you’re just going to confuse yourself. Dr. Maas describes Sunday night insomnia and the resulting fatigue on Monday morning. Avoid that by being consistent.

No, it’s not easy. But it’s worth it. (Assuming you like feeling good consistently and enjoy putting yourself in a great position to reach your potential. If you like feeling craptastic ignore this advice. :)

“3. For sleep to be rejuvenating you should get your required amount of sleep in one continuous block.”

Pretty straight-forward. Go to sleep. Stay sleeping. Wake up. Rock it.

“4. Pay back your sleep debt in a timely fashion. Make up for any lost sleep as soon as possible.”

Always wise to pay back debt snappy-like. Miss some sleep? Make it up!

For many entrepreneurs, wealth creation (for the moment defined as making money) is an up and down almost zero sum game. We make a lot… and then we lose it. Here’s the truth – we make a lot when we’re on profile, and we lose it when we’re playing the wrong (off profile) game. So knowing your Wealth Profile defines what you should be doing and what you should not be doing to create your own flow and your own wealth. You’re about to discover that there are ONLY eight ways to create true wealth, and each of these ways has certain rules which need to be followed to achieve optimal results. The two questions that each one of us need to ask are these: 1. Which path to wealth suits our natural character and personality best? and 2. Some background for you to help you understand your profile results: Wealth Profiling is profound. It’s based on a 5000 year old ‘technology’ called the I-Ching. “Creating a better product” PROFILE The Creator comes in two forms. The introverted creator is an inventor: creative, artistic, and able to multi-task on many new ideas at the same time. The extroverted creator is a pioneer: innovative but focused, creating not just products, but the businesses and marketing plans that will drive those products to market. Both are visionaries and motivate others by their drive.

ROLE MODELS Successful introverted creators can be found most visibly in the design, media and entertainment industries. But are also behind every new and innovative product that reaches the market from the most recent high tech phone to the latest kitchen blender. Successful extroverted creators are behind many startups and can be found at the head of high growth companies in high growth industries that require constant innovation to compete. STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES Creators are naturally intuitive, so tend to get involved in their own creativity, which can cause friction with others. They are big picture thinkers, which can often mean missing the details. Their drive gives them the momentum to spark their creativity, but this drive can also exhaust or disorientate others. As a result of this double edged sword, creators are often described by others as the best communicators and the worst communicators at the same time. Creators are excellent at getting things started, but often terrible at completing. Hence the tendency to have many projects going at the same time, which can sometimes lead to distraction and lack of focus. Those creators who have turned their back on their creativity have often done so as a result of others criticizing their lack of attention to detail, or their inability to complete the task at hand. Unsuccessful creators are those who either have seen their creativity as a distraction in the serious business of earning a living, or who have become a victim of their success – living the consequence of some creative idea they had in the past, whether it is a company they set up or a career path they have entrenched themselves in.

THE CREATOR WEALTH CREATION STRATEGY 1. BUILDING WEALTH FOUNDATION You can be extremely productive when you are using your creativity but may invest little time in this area. Your biggest priority must be to build a team around you to support and execute the right ideas and plans. If you try and do it all yourself, you are not doing you, your team or your wealth any favors. Focus on building your opportunists and financiers within your network to support your ideas, and align yourself with mechanics and deal makers who will provide you with the greatest leverage.

2. MOMENT OF WEALTH CREATION You need to maximize the time invested dreaming up and creating new ideas, products and strategies. Yes, that’s right, doing the things that are most fun. That means you must build your wealth foundation first to be successful. Then your main focus must be to understand the six criteria for assessing opportunities, as you need to refine your output to the product idea that will deliver the greatest value.

3. VALUE CREATION The value creation activities that are important to you are maximizing the value differential you are creating by focusing on the product’s unique selling points. This alone will multiply your returns. Also, identifying and building product niches that you can dominate, creating your strategy for execution and brainstorming your marketing plan. Everything else is dressing: Operations, systems – someone else can do it, and will do it better than you.

4. VALUE OWNERSHIP Before leveraging, you need to own the product rights of whatever you have created. That means trade marking, copyrighting or patenting. You need to ensure you have originality in what you have created and that you own, or any cash flow you create will be very temporary.

5. LEVERAGE Extro-creators are much more likely to start their own business to support their product innovations. Then leverage will come by multiplying reach and productivity through distribution networks and mass production, and magnifying the brand and goodwill through marketing and partnerships. Introcreators need to leverage even more by securing licensing agreements with distributors: Hence the need to link with mechanics and dealmakers.

6. SECURE CASH FLOW The world is full of creators who have not followed this strategy and so have never found their wealth. Many even find a way to leverage, but then miss the final key point: Getting paid their worth. Cash flow will come from patent royalties, license fees, or often from the business: company profits or equity sale. This means secure where the money is coming from and how and when it will be paid before rushing ahead and conquering the world

Creating a better system PROFILE The Mechanic is an enigmatic character who has the ability to control and manage many people without needing to demonstrate any charismatic leadership qualities. For many mechanics that never found their wealth, they found the comfort of a large, structured MNC too inviting to resist, and became forever swallowed in a comfy armchair of middle income. For mechanics who follow their path, however, value-laden opportunities abound, and are simply waiting for the right person to come along and multiply!

THE MECHANIC WEALTH CREATION STRATEGY 1. BUILDING WEALTH FOUNDATION You are dynamic, yet with an introverted tendency, so are likely to pick your friends carefully. That’s OK, because now it’s time to also pick your wealth network carefully. The people you know will lead you to your wealth. If you have set up a company that operates and multiplies your own systems, then cash flow will also come from profits and equity sale.

A unique personality and attributes are reason enough for people to talk about a star. Naturally extroverted, stars will be happy around others and will be quite comfortable being the center of attention. As they also think more intuitively, they will have the ability to create the identity that suits them best.

ROLE MODELS Stars, naturally, are the easiest of the profiles to spot. After all, the value is in the person. Obvious stars can be found in the sports, music, film and entertainment industries. However, the highest profile CEOs, salespeople and trainers also achieved their wealth by following their natural path as a star. STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES Stars are aware of the strength of their personality and often use this to their advantage, causing disharmony and alienation at times. As a star grows in stature, the value of their time grows, as does the demand on their time. To continue to shine brightly, however, they need to continue to deliver, which can lead to exhaustion and dissatisfaction if they have not learnt how to leverage effectively. With the stress that comes with increased success, it is natural for a stars ego to often get the better of them.
