“Earning the right” My credentials; !

! !

I have pursued the best wisdom from the world’s best authors and mentors and immersed myself in their valuable teachings since I was 28. That’s over 23 years at the time of writing. Over this time I’ve attended the best workshops, seminars and retreats - and travelled all over the world to do so. Very often I’m in the front row of these events, having turned up hours before anyone else. I’ve been fortunate to meet with many of the authors personally. My library of books have filled several rooms and now, many hard drives. I have spent much the last 12 years calibrating, refining, distilling and reflecting on which authors and mentors to include as the “best of the best” - and this was my most challenging task by far.

To many, I have had a privileged life - yet it masks many personal challenges and transcendence of pain and difficulty; as is the case with most of us. Dealing with daily challenges, self discovery, relational issues, disease, injury, near death experiences and death of loved ones can strengthen each and everyone’s resolve

!

It’s been my life’s “work” and I have learnt so much and grown smartly from this journey. As we’ll see, these authors and mentors are extraordinary genius’ in their own fields and areas of expertise.

!

In no way do I want to take credit or attribution for their work. Each author’s book is highly recommended acknowledged, credited and referenced at the end of each chapter.

Book Structure!

! !

It’s an eclectic mix, for sure, encompassing authors and mentors, multi millionaire marketers and lots in between. Each of my 52 authors and mentors share something special; they are all extraordinary thinkers that have put themselves “out there”; shared and had the courage to live their message. We can now gain from them enjoyably, easily, smoothly and without pain!

! Many of them will be known to us, and there will be a few surprises as well. !

As part of my personal development journey, I have made two major distinctions which I believe may contribute to making personal development even more accessible to many people. Too often, personal development authors and mentors inadvertently exclude the very people they are motivating to change.

! An example is Shiv Khera’s brilliant quote; ! !

“Winners don’t do different things - they do things differently” - rather than the style that I am using throughout this book - which is to say “winners don’t do different things - we do things differently”.

The second distinction, which may appear strange, is the replacement of the word ‘others’ with ‘fellows’. All too often, hierarchical societies promote an adversarial, ego based, model of the world and I hope that ‘fellows’ succeeds in conveying a safer, more connected, friendlier world view. My use of first names also promotes this friendlier world view point.

! !

Life’s challenges are not easily compartmentalised and so I have embraced the leading authors and mentors from many disciplines, countries, generations and domains. These people have shaped lives and have demonstrated enduring wisdom and passion.

!

Note; “God” is referred to in several of the quotes. I am not religious in any way shape or form and wouldn’t wish to further any particular religion or cause, so I suggest we adopt this spiritual approach holding “God” as a user friendly co creative force.

!

! ! How to use this book! ! !

In your hands is a year long companion containing 60 chapters. 52 great authors and mentors - one for each week. There are also seven bonus authors and mentors and one chapter of my own favourite quotes (should we decide that we do not resonate with some of the original 52).

!

For best results, I suggest that we read “Gain Without Pain” once and subsequently read one quote on a daily basis. Upon completing the book we can start again.

! !

Pick each quote in turn and reflect on the essence of it’s message. Just one of these daily messages can transform our day, our week and our lives!

!

I suggests we be earnest in our application. We can choose to recite the quote (silently or otherwise, as befits the circumstances we find ourselves in - and we can let the quote guide us, remind us and inspire us to even better outcomes and even more creativity. We can ask ourselves: “how can this quote improve my already fabulous, or soon to be fabulous, life even more?” This process is supposed to be enjoyable and educational - in that order.

!

On most days your quotation will resonate, whilst on others it may feel like a challenge, difficult to apply or maybe an unspeakable insult. Yet other days may seem to make no sense to us at all. All of these scenarios are great. I encourage you to simply hold each in your awareness during the day and prepare to be surprised.

! !

This is not meant to an academic process. We’ll be gaining wisdom and knowledge and the reflections of some of the most extraordinary people - and we can let their presence enhance our lives.

!

We use the quotes in any and all ways that seem appropriate. I use these on my motorbike rides, when swimming lengths, on my daily trampoline routine, if facing a fear, when I sit watching sun setting from my balcony or sitting on the pontoon in the sea. We all have many “touch points” during our days.

“Until we are committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative or creation, there is one elementary truth...that the moment we de@initely commit ourselves, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help us that would otherwise never have occurred.

A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in our favour all manner of incidents and meetings and material assistance which no human would have believed would have come our way. Whatever we think we can do or believe we can do, we can begin it. Action has magic, grace, and power in it.”

Chapter 01 Anthony Robbins! !

!

Anthony Robbins is an American self-help writer and professional speaker. Tony has become well known through the use of fire-walking in his seminars. He initially studied Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) but went on to develop his own methods. Tony has motivated and inspired millions around the world!. www.tonyrobbins.com

!

Tony’s own inspiration to change his life came when he was facing challenges of paying his bills, being overweight, and, having no direction in his life. Tony’s books are ones that will motivate and inspire anyone who reads them. He is the author of best selling books, “Unlimited Power” and “Awaken The Giant Within” and “Notes From A Friend”.

! ! ! ! !

~!

Attending Tony’s ‘Unleash The Power Within’ (UPW) seminar in Birmingham, England in October, 1993 was a transformational point in my life. Tony convinced me that the 'past need not equal the future' and Tony's charisma, depth of knowledge and unique presentation style made learning with Tony an exhilarating rewarding and fun experience. I went on to transform my life and business having attended this event.

!

The progression of learning with Tony is after attending UPW those who wish can attend "Mastery University" which offers an amazing selection of guest speakers, chosen personally by Tony. The Mastery University is phenomenal.

!

Most learning and conditioning that humans experience is similar to the primitive barbaric way most humans train animals. Tony introduces a concept known as "dolphin training" whereby dolphins are too smart and sensitive to be trained using pain and pleasure (carrot and stick) and have therefore to be inspired using only reward followed by intermittent reward. All the mentors recommended in GWP teach in this manner.

!

There is no higher testimony and accolade I can offer Tony than to say I entrusted his brilliance to prepare my beloved daughter Chantelle for her first fire-walk in Singapore when she was only six years old!

!

Anyone visiting my home is struck with the prominent position of my trampoline. Again, it was Tony who introduced me to the power of ‘lymphasising’ and balancing

our brain hemispheres which trampolining provides and it a daily practice I cherish as part of my fitness and vitally regimen.

!

Tony's "PowerTalk" series is absolutely awesome and a tool that I regularly refer to. I was indeed first introduced to many of my greatest mentors by listening to Tony’s PowerTalks. Tony's interview style and the quality of his guests in this series make this an unparalleled and highly recommended learning resource. !

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

! !

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of our lives and create a meaning that disempowers them - or one that can literally transform or even save our lives.” “It's in our moments of decision that our destiny is shaped”. “The secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use us. When we do that, we're in control of our lives.” “There's always a way - when we're committed. We raise our standards; change any limiting beliefs and change our strategy until successful.” “There is always room in our lives for thinking bigger, pushing limits and imagining the impossible.” “The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of the questions we ask ourselves! How are we going to live today in order to create the tomorrow we're committed to?” “Most people overestimate what we can achieve in a year and underestimate what we can achieve in a decade.”

Chapter 02 Barry Neil Kauffman! !

!

Barry Neil Kaufman, therapist, author, motivational speaker, and founder of the Option Institute shows us how we can use the traits of happy people to change our lives quickly, and easily. Barry is affectionately referred to by his students as “Bears”.

!

option.org

Bears’ shortcuts to happiness include: making happiness the priority; accepting our personal authenticity, the freedom to be ourselves; learning to discard regrets about the past and worries about the future, and so much more.

!

! Above Bears’ office door is George Bernard Shaw’s quotation; !

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the conditions that surround him... The unreasonable man adapts surrounding conditions to himself... All progress therefore depends on the unreasonable man.”

!

Bears is the epitome of one of the most courageous, loving, compassionate, caring, smart and unreasonable men the world has ever seen. Bears’ story of how he and his wife Samahria looked for solutions for their autistic son Raun and on not finding them, created their own is moving, compelling and an example to all of us who face adversity. In 1998 I was privileged to be a "reverent student" at the Option Institute, in Massachusetts, attending the "Living the Dream" seminar where after I wrote;

! !

! !

"I feel so blessed to have found The Option Process. To achieve such miraculous and lifelong changes from such a subtle and gentle process has been a wonderful revelation to me. The love and acceptance I felt taught me that there is an easy and wondrous way to grow comfortably. I now feel such a profound sense of peace, safety and security within.”

Indeed, The Option Institute and “The Option Process” is a living and breathing example of teaching “Gain Without Pain.” ®

!

Dr. Wayne Dyer, a multi bestselling author has gone so far as to suggest "If there were a Nobel Prize for love, that he would want the Kaufman's to be the first to receive one." and I wholeheartedly second that nomination!

! ! ! !

! !

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“We can live our dreams ... instead of just dreaming them. We can make a difference! We are the difference.” “A vision (a frame of reference or viewpoint) is like an invisible friend we invent to help us make sense of unfolding circumstances. We create visions for the best of reasons: to protect ourselves, to honour those we love and to express caring. 'But we do not have to become prisoners of our perspectives; we can change them and our lives by developing a completely new world picture... one human step at a time.” “We can change. We can be different. We can defy history. We are not in Pursuit of history; we are in pursuit of happiness. Our past is but a memory dragged into the present moment. That moment is no more important or significant than the next. And in the next moment we can change it all. We do it by changing our point of view... by changing our beliefs! We are in charge. We are the architects of our own attitudes and experiences. We design the world by the way we choose to see it!” “We can observe our bodies and learn much about our beliefs. Physical symptoms can help make our wants and concerns more apparent. Thoughts occur body-wide; intelligence exists everywhere in our system. "When we think, we create new and distinct electromagnetic impulses and chemical substances throughout our entire physical form.” “When we inspire fellows to be happy, we inspire ourselves. Every situation becomes an opportunity. Each step we take counts. Children allow us to see the happiness option and the unhappiness option in action. They demonstrate an amazing power to turn their switches on and off at will. As adults, we are no less powerful. The secret to happiness lies not in events but in our responses to them. The ‘decision to be happy’ is actually the decision to stop being unhappy.” “We weren't born unhappy; we learned to he unhappy. And, in addition, most humans have become masters at teaching and reinforcing unhappiness. In small, seemingly insignificant ways, we "save the day" but lose another life to misery. Most humans reward anger and teach violence and war. When we support happiness, we teach love, peace and acceptance. We have the choice.”

! !

Guy Bowden

“In the darkness we can find light. In the confusion of seemingly senseless events, we can find meaning. In the absence of a dear one, we can continue to find happiness, love and peace of mind. We are the belief-makers. Our ability to design and influence personal and shared experiences knows no bounds. In such a user-friendly universe, everything is possible, nothing is impossible.”

Ben Carson is a living example to us all of the power of education and how we can all evolve to love learning which changes our lives. His book "Think Big, unleashing our potential for excellence" glorifies and glamorises a reading culture and emphasises the power we all possess to become more that we are now.

!

Ben’s 2013 prayer breakfast address offered a common sense approach to taking action over America's crippling debt and rose above partisan political interests. Ben has the depth and dimension of learning to continue to widen his prominence with his common sense and compassionate approach to everyday problems and he is set to become an even bigger worldwide influence, sensation and force for change - should he choose that path! .

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! "Success is determined not by whether or not we face obstacles, but by our reaction to them. And if people look at these obstacles as a containing fence, they become their excuse for failure. When we look at them as a hurdle, each one strengthens us for the next.” "Happiness doesn't result from what we get, but from what we give.” "When we hear how wonderful we are often enough, we begin to believe it, know it and live it, no matter how we may try to resist it." ”Successful people don't have fewer problems. We have determined that nothing will stop us from going forward. We do our best and let God do the rest.” "Everyone in the world is worth being nice to. Because God never creates inferior human beings, each person deserves respect and dignity. When we treat fellow people with kindness and love, it is part of our way of paying our debt to God and the world for the privilege of living on this planet." “Here is the treasure chest of the world - the public library, or a bookstore. The doors of the world are opened to we who can read. Reading activates and exercises the mind. Reading forces the mind to discriminate. From the beginning, readers have to recognise letters printed on the page, make them into words, the words into sentences, and the sentences into concepts.Reading pushes us to use our imagination and makes us more creatively inclined." "Ben is convinced that knowledge is power - to overcome the past, to change our own situations, to fight new obstacles, to make better decisions.”

Chapter 04 Bob Proctor! !

!

Bob is yet another example of a person who was able to rise from poor circumstances to wealth and success and to be able to impart the principles of success powerfully to fellows. Self-development writers Napoleon Hill and Wallace D. Wattles have been significant influences on his life and work.

!

Bob was born in Canada. He dropped out of high school and worked in a series of low paid jobs. After being introduced to Napoleon’s book “Think and Grow Rich”, Bob delved into other self-development literature, such as the works of Earl Nightingale and after a year he was earning $100,000; soon becoming a millionaire.

!

Bob has authored a large number of books and audio programs. His early, best selling book, “You Were Born Rich” stresses the value of right thinking in being able to unfold our true potential and to create the lives we want. Bob suggests that wealth building is an essential part of life and that it is important that we have the right attitude towards money. Bob proposes the use of techniques, including visualisation, directed at attaining life goals. Bob advocates making the most of the law of attraction and of being prepared to take risks to achieve what we want to achieve in life.

! Be sure to check out Bob’s’ numerous iPhone apps. ! ! ~! !

I’ve not yet met Bob personally, however, my organising principle is that if he has had an impact on people I admire, I know I can be sure his teachings are effective.

!

If the product is good we can look behind and see who produced the product - and so hearing Bob’s name constantly prompted me to delve into his material. Needless to say Bob’s content and presentation is magnificent. Just by content alone it was easy for me to include this creative genius in my list of best authors and mentors.

Bob Proctor is a best selling author, business consultant and personal development coach. Bob was one of the primary exponents of the “Law of Attraction” featured in the popular and influential movie, “The Secret”.

! !

! ! ! !

! ! ! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…

“The only limits in our lives are those we impose on ourselves.” “We will attract everything that we require. If it’s money we need we will attract it. If it’s people we need we’ll attract them. We’ve got to pay attention to what we’re attracted to, because as we hold images of what we want, we’re going to be attracted to things and they’re going to be attracted to us. And it literally moves into physical reality with and through us. And it does that by law.” “Thoughts become things. If we see it in our minds, we will hold it in our hands.” “Change is inevitable but personal growth is a choice.” “We can set a goal to achieve; something that is so big, so exhilarating that it excites us and scares us at the same time!" “What we make of life is up to us. We have all the tools and resources we need what we do with them is up to us. The choice is ours. We need only stay mindful of our choices!” “No amount of reading or memorising will make us successful in life. It is the understanding and application of wise thought that counts.”

Chapter 05 Brian Koslow!

!

! ! ! ! !

!

mystrategiccoach.com

Brian Koslow made his first million dollars by the time he was thirty-one, and as an executive coach he’s helped many more to do the same. In “365 Ways to Become a Millionaire” Brian shares the principles that put him on the road to wealth and invites his readers to follow the same path to our own fortunes. Through 365 practical and philosophical tips, Brian shows us how to build a mind-set for success and turn our wealthbuilding aspirations into reality.

~

Brian’s “365 Ways to Become a Millionaire” is a concise practical work which incorporates insightful and powerful concepts!

!

The concepts are presented in twelve relevant life subject areas and presented in a fashion that goes beyond simply becoming a millionaire. I define wealth in the truest sense of the word as signifying happiness, health and ubiquitous riches, in that order. It has been my experience that having millions of dollars in assets and resources means little without health and happiness. An example is having a searing backache or toothache. Regardless of the amount of money we have in the bank and health issue diminishes our enjoyment of life.

!

Therefore Brian’s inclusion of finding a great chiropractor is an example of an essential component of wealth which is rarely discussed. As with any profession there are great, mediocre and bad chiropractors and it is essential that we make sure that we calibrate the effectiveness of the chiropractor we visit by the results and relief we experience.

!

“Every master was once a disaster” and I remember, during my early 20’s being completely unaware of the chiropractic profession and enduring searing back pain for months on end. No amount of physiotherapy or painkillers alleviated my suffering and I always remember how my first visit to Tom Adagala, a well known chiropractor in Kenya, put me right in just one session. After six months of suffering it was like a new lease of life and a miracle.

! ! ! ! ! ! !

! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day… “The bigger our purpose, the more vitality we will have at the end of the day. We willingly let go of the old in order to create something new. We regularly upgrade our clothing, automobiles, and our own personal packaging. It keep us alive, vibrant, and growing.” “Breaking any commitments always results in frustration to the people dependent on us. We never break our commitments unless we responsibly communicate our change in commitment to everyone depending on us. We always know a person's true intentions when we see results. Integrity exists when the stated intentions and results match.” “Being passionate increases our magnetic field for attracting fellows. Oftentimes, it is the primary reason that relatives, friends, and associates will invest in us.” “Controlling costs is not as impressive as controlling income. Costs have a finite potential, while income has an infinite potential. We focus our resources on generating even more income – there is greater potential there!” “Our brains control and coordinate every cell in our bodies. They accomplish this through a vast nervous system, which travels to our various muscles, tissues, and organs. To maximise the use of our brainpower to all of the cells in our bodies, we can consider keeping our spines maintained regularly by a chiropractor. It is Brian’s personal experience that this will keep us focused and functioning at our optimum performance.” “Most people schedule appointments and meeting that have a specific start time with little emphasis on an “end” time. Therefore, the time allotted is frequently expanded and unnecessarily wasted. An improved respect for our time includes a specifically stated time to begin and end each meeting.”

! ! !

“If people’s mind are occupied or cluttered, their senses will be suppressed, and they would be better off making decisions at another time. Clarity of mind and access to our innate senses always come without effort and provide our best decisions. The more complexity we take out of our lives our products and service, the faster we will make our sales.”

Catherine is a pioneer in the prosperity consciousness movement authoring “The Prospering Power of Love”. Catherine has adapted her this philosophy to help us solve common relationship problems and challenges in all areas of life.

!

Catherine's stories of her own life and those of her readers make for an inspirational message which is easy to follow. The most powerful concept presented by Catherine is the power of tithing which, when adhered to, produces miraculous, life changing results beyond imagination.

! ! !

~

!

I love Catherine’s unique presentation style of putting her book chapters on the back cover of her books. By doing so Catherine gives us a clear destination and subject map of where she plans to lead us. Catherine’s practical and inspiring stories, are personal and relate powerfully with the advice she offers to her congregation and friends, and growing number of raving fans around the globe. Faith in the divine is a commodity more tangible practical and effective than many sceptics and armchair critics would have us believe.

!

Catherine’s writings have a powerful message which is; “know what we want” and thereafter attract it using a power which can only be referred to as fearless faith. Many times Catherine calls on us to get ‘in the arena’ and demonstrate that faith by accelerating past any perceived point of no return expectant and full of faith that the miracle will appear. “Be realistic Plan for a miracle!”

"Now we want even greater prosperity in our lives, we start forming a vacuum to receive it.” "The forgiving state of mind is a magnetic power for attracting good.” “If people bother us in any way, it is because their souls are trying to get our divine attention and our blessing.” “If we hold resentment toward another, we are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.” “I love all people and all people love me, without attachment. Divine love is doing its perfect work in me and through me now. Divine love is doing its perfect work in us and through us now.” “I call upon divine love to heal our relationships now. I call upon divine love to straighten out and adjust this situation.” “Love melts situations that seem impossible. Divine love is doing its perfect work in this situation now. Divine love is healing us now.”

Chapter 07 Chuck Spezzano!

www.hawaiiforgivenessproject.org

Chuck Spezzano, PhD is a world-renowned seminar leader, author, visionary and founder of “Psychology of Vision”. Chuck holds a doctorate in Psychology and has led workshops worldwide since 1980. His workshops are for anyone in the healing professions or anyone on a personal healing path who is looking for new and innovative approaches which are profound, creative and effective.

!

Chuck is an expert in relationship psychology and he has over forty-one years of experience in relationship counselling and training and offers a unique perspective on human connection through his blending of psychology, metaphor and spirituality.

!

Chuck and his wife Lency travel regularly in the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, China, Taiwan and Singapore and many other places on the planet. They lecture and lead public seminars. Chuck also does private coaching and business seminars for companies.

!

Chuck has authored over 40 books and card decks that have been published in over 20 countries in numerous languages.

! !

~!

“If It Hurts, It Isn't Love”, is a clever title that to this day attracts my admiration as a profound concept every time I think about it. I have a quotation reminding me of a version of this on my front door; “To love someone who is not loving me; is not to love at all.”

!

During the 1990’s I had the pleasure and privilege of attending multiple Chuck and Lency workshops in London and Hawaii. The combination of Chuck’s deep understanding of the interplay between spirituality and psychology is unparalleled. His fun and humorous interactive presentation skills in conduction with Lency’s feminine power and elegance led me, and many of my fellow seminar participants, to effective and powerful healings.

!

Chuck’s unashamedly spiritual approach, his affectionate and warm personality and his deeply loving relationship with Lency make Chuck and Lency an irresistible team who lead by example and are shining forces for good.

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“This work is unashamedly spiritual. Spirituality is what Chuck has found to be an essential part of the human mind and experience by whatever name it is called.” “Intimacy can heal anything: whatever assails us in a relationship whatever brings questions, doubt, or pain, whatever the problem is, the answer will come when we truly move toward our partner. In fact, joining with our partner and recognising a new level of connectedness will heal anything. Moving toward our partner does not mean giving up our own position or our own values; it simply means moving toward our partner, in love.” “Forgiveness changes perception; The beauty of forgiveness is that it releases us from patterns where we are caught. It releases us from being a victim and being caught in situations we do not like. Forgiveness changes our perception. When we see situations differently, things actually are different for us. Basically, all healing has to do with changing our perception and seeing things in a new light. Forgiveness allows us to live in a way that raises us above the situation, thus the situation changes.” “The other person in the relationship is on my team: Our recognition that fellows are on our team allows us to receive from them. They can be the ones to save the day and help us. Fellow people have something to give to us, just as we have something to give to them.” “People control because they cannot stand it being so good” All of control operates as a means of self-protection. However, control only protects and perfects peoples’ fear of getting hurt. This covers up the fear that if they let go of control, things would get really great and they would be overwhelmed. It would be so good that they would just go into meltdown and be totally lost, so good that all purpose would be gone and they would die. But guess what? This is only their ego scaring them with death. When we give up control, we do not die; only our ego does. But we feel like we have died and gone to Heaven.”

! !

Guy Bowden

"Creativity will fulfil all my needs: Needs make us think that we lack something that can only be fulfilled through a certain situation. They give us tunnel vision, so we limit the amount of response, fulfillment, or resolution that we can have in any situation. Creativity is a way of looking at the world or any situation from an expansive viewpoint. It reaches out because it comes from our love for fellows.” “Abundance is the result of willingness to receive. We say that we desire certain things that we do not have. When we look into our minds, however, we realise that what we lack, we do not want. We do not want it because, for some reason, we are afraid to have it. For example, if we believe that a good person should not be rich, abundant, or have too much sexual satisfaction, we will either be good without the riches, or bad with abundance. The fear is stronger than having abundance because the belief says that it is bad. The more people complain about not having what they think they want, the more they are actually afraid of having it. If they check out their belief systems and fear level, they may be kidding themselves about what they say they really want. The problem is neither with the situation, nor is it another person. It is with themselves. The willingness to change our attitude, have courage and open ourselves to a new level, find any hidden fears, and look at belief systems allows us to see and let go of what is stopping our abundance. Somewhere we will find we have valued an idea or a certain feeling (maybe guilt, maybe fear) more than what we think we want.”

Chapter 08 Dale Carnegie!

!

Dale Carnegie (1888-1955) described himself as a "simple country boy" from Missouri and he was also a pioneer of the self-improvement genre. Since the 1936 publication of his first book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, Dale has touched millions of readers and his classic works continue to impact lives to this day.

!

His book was the grandfather of all people-skills books and was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling over 15 million copies.

!

Financial success, Dale believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." Dale teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasises fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated.

!

Dale says we can make someone want to do what we want them to by seeing the situation from the fellow person's point of view and "arousing in the fellow person an eager want." We can learn how to make people like us, win people over to our way of thinking, and change people without causing offence or arousing resentment. For instance, "let our fellow person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "we can talk about our own mistakes before criticising.”

!

The great Warren Buffet said; "it changed my life”. The Times said; "The most successful self-help book of all time... Carnegie has never seemed more relevant" Jenny Colgan said; "It's helped me immeasurably in life. I think everyone should read it" .

! ! !

~!

At a transition point in my life, which I refer to as "desolation and desperation", I casually picked out a book from a friend’s library - I had no idea it would change my life. I had previously consciously chosen not to read books and Dale’s book resulted in a miraculous change in my perception. I will always remember "How to Win Friends and Influence People" for its 'no nonsense', practical advice which was so easy to follow and applicable to my life and any issues at that time.

“It isn't what we have or who we are or where we are or what we are doing that makes us happy or unhappy. It is what we think about it.” “We can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in fellow people than we can in two years by trying to get fellow people interested in us.To be interesting, be interested.” “I consider my ability to arouse enthusiasm among my people the greatest asset I possess, and the way to develop that enthusiasm, is by appreciation and encouragement.” “Personally I am very fond of strawberries and cream, but I have found that for some strange reason, fish prefer worms. So when I went fishing, I didn’t think about what I wanted. I thought about what they wanted. I didn't bait the hook with strawberries and cream. Rather, I dangled a worm or grasshopper in front of the fish and said: "Wouldn't you like to have that? Why not use the same common sense when fishing for people? If there is any one secret of success,” said Henry Ford, “it lies in the ability to get the fellow person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from our own.” “Names are the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” “Everybody in the world is seeking happiness—and there is one sure way to find it. That is by controlling our thoughts. Happiness doesn’t depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions.” “The Value of a Smile; It costs nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing we who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None are so rich they can get along without it, and none so poor but are richer for its benefits. It creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in a business, and is the countersign of friends. Actions speak louder than words, and a smile says, ‘I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you.”

As the winner of the 1964 World Trampoline Championship in London, Dan co-captained the 1968 NCAA University of California gymnastics team and has also worked as a gymnastics instructor at Stanford University and a professor of physical education at Oberlin College. Dan is a leader in the field of the human potential movement. His early background includes modern dance and Aikido. Later Dan studied various yogas and martial arts while he traveled around the world, which resulted in his new calling as spiritual and motivational speaker and author.

~

I met Dan at Omega Institute, New York where he illustrated how an agile, aware, alert mind can enhance our spiritual awareness and have profound effects on our physical capabilities. Dan is a shining example of someone living a self defined vision of walking a warrior’s path of infinite harmony, ease, grace, love, peace and wealth. Dan is the epitome of the Peaceful Warrior he writes about.

Peace is the path.” "If we agree on everything, only one of us is necessary.” "Most people are prisoners of their own illusions - about themselves and about the world.” "There are no ordinary moments.” “Pain is a relatively objective, physical phenomenon; suffering is our psychological resistance to what happens. Events may create physical pain, but they do not in themselves create suffering. Resistance creates suffering. Stress happens if the mind resists what is...The only problem in people’s lives is their mind's resistance to life as it unfolds.” “Everything we'll ever need to know is within us; the secrets of the universe are imprinted in the cells of our bodies. And we can learn how to read the wisdom of our bodies.”

Chapter 10 David Schwartz! David Schwartz (23 March 1927 - 6 December 1987) was an American motivational writer and coach, best known for authoring the "The Magic of Thinking Big" in 1959. David was a professor at Georgia State University.

!

~

!

Reading the “Magic of Thinking Big” represented a turning point in my life. After reading the book I started being a front row sitter; walking 25% faster; using goals to help me grow; I started going first class and most importantly I banished 'excusitis’ (the failure disease) from my life!

!

David's presentation of his material and the material itself make it entertaining to read and extremely rewarding to implement. I contend that if anyone is restricted to reading one personal development book; this is the one!

! ! !

David’s dedication to his son is a prelude to the heartfelt, powerful message in his amazing book;

! !

! !

FOR DAVID

Our six-year-old son David felt mighty big when be was graduated from Kindergarten. I asked him what be plans to be when be finishes growing up. Davey looked at me intently for a moment and then answered,

!

"Dad, I want to be a Professor." A Professor? A Professor of what?" I asked. "Well, Dad," be replied, "I think I want to be a Professor of Happiness." A Professor of Happiness! That's a pretty wonderful ambition, don't you think?

! ! ! !

To David, then, a fine boy with a grand goal, and to his mother, this book is dedicated.

! ! !

"Remember, we see in any situation what we expect to see.” "Belief triggers the power to do. Believe it can be done. When we believe something can be done, really believe, our minds find the ways to do it. Believing a solution paves the way to solution” "The mind is what the mind is fed. If people think little goals they can expect little achievements. If people think they are weak, think they lack what it takes, think they will lose, think they are second class – they are doomed to mediocrity. We think big goals and win big success.” "Every day thousands of people bury good ideas because they are afraid to act on them. Ideas are fruits of our thinking. And they've got to be harnessed and put to work to have value. Each year an oak tree produces enough acorns to populate a good-size forest. Yet from these bushels of seeds perhaps only one or two acorns will become a tree. The Squirrels destroy most of them, and the hard ground beneath the tree doesn't give the few remaining seeds much chance for a start. So it is with ideas. Very few bear fruit. Ideas are highly perishable. If we're not on guard, the squirrels (negative-thinking people) will destroy most of them. Our ideas require special handling from the time they are born until we transform them into practical ways for doing things better. " "The success combination in business is: Do what we do better and do more of what we do.” "Action cures fear. Hope is a start. And hope needs action to win victories.” "Look at things not as they are, but as they can be. Visualisation adds value to everything. We big thinkers always visualise what can be done in the future."

In 1985, Deepak met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who invited him to study Ayurveda. Deepak left his position at the NEMH and became the founding president of the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine, and was later named medical director of the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre. In 1996, Deepak and neurologist David Simon founded the Chopra Centre for Wellbeing, advertising it as having a "holistic view of life”.

!

Deepak has enjoyed business success from the sale of a range of books, courses and alternative and complementary health products. He has written more than 50 books and they have been translated over 35 languages.

! ! !

~

!

Deepak has written a multitude of bestselling books all of which offer value and immense wisdom and which have been translated into multiple languages. My personal favourites are "The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success" and "Creating Affluence". In “Creating Affluence” Deepak has an A to Z of wealth consciousness and a 1 - 25 qualities of the unified field. Since I read that book in 1999 I have made it a ritual to recite those lists before my daily meditation. Another highly commendable creative gift that Deepak was central in coordinating is "A Gift of Love”, which is a unique artistic triumph.

Deepak's genius and his brilliance in presenting universal wisdom in a simple, easy to follow manner will ensure his predominance in this field forever. I personally always remember attending Deepak's “Seduction of the Spirit” seminar in Goa, India and I recently had the pleasure of meeting him again in Pattaya, Thailand where he demonstrated and shared his brilliance during an evening gathering.

! ! ! ! !

! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! ! “Affluence, unboundedness, and abundance are our natural state. we just need to restore the memory of what we already know.” “Wealth consciousness is so much more than simply having the ability to make money. It's a mind-set that involves seeing life, not as a struggle, but as a magical adventure where our needs are met with grace and ease. It includes the ability to see beauty wherever we go, to have gratitude as our primary emotion and an open heart to all we meet. Wealth consciousness is a state of mind, a sense, not of believing, but really knowing that what we need is available to us.” “All these events seemingly happen to us, but at very primordial levels we are making them happen. The impulses of energy and information that create our lives experiences are reflected in our attitudes toward life - and our attitudes are an outcome of and expressions of self-engendered impulses of energy and information.” “Meditation allows the mind to experience more and more abstract levels of the thinking process and, ultimately, to transcend to that most abstract level of awareness, transcendental consciousness, which is the unified field itself. This is the state of pure awareness, pure consciousness. Meditation is an important part of the spiritual tradition of almost every culture.”

! !

“Success in life can be defined as the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realisation of worthy goals. Success is the ability to fulfil our desires with effortless ease. And yet success, including the creation of wealth,

Guy Bowden

has traditionally been considered to be a process that requires hard work, often considered to be at the expense of fellows. We need a more spiritual approach to success and to affluence, which is the abundant flow of all good things to us.

! “The fourth spiritual law of success is the law of least effort. This law is based on the fact that nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease and abandoned carefreeness. This is the principle of least action, of no resistance. This is, therefore, the principle of harmony and love. When we learn this lesson from nature, we easily fulfil our desires. If we observe nature at work, we will see that least effort is expended. Grass doesn't try to grow, it just grows. Fish don't try to swim, they just swim. flowers don't try to bloom, they bloom. birds don't try to fly, they fly. This is their intrinsic nature. The earth doesn't try to spin on its own axis; it is the nature of the earth to spin with dizzying speed and to hurtle through space. It is the nature of babies to be in bliss. It is the nature of the sun to shine. It is the nature of the stars to glitter and sparkle. And it is human nature to make our dreams manifest into physical form, easily and effortlessly.” “Receiving is as necessary as giving.”

He has inspired, informed, challenged and entertained audiences for over 25 years from the board rooms of multi-national corporations to the locker rooms of world-class athletes and in the meeting rooms of thousands of conventioneers throughout the world. Recently, Denis was voted business speaker of the year by the Sales and Marketing Executives’ Association and by Toastmasters’ International and inducted into the International Speakers’ Hall of Fame.

!

With over 10 million audio programs sold in 14 languages, Denis is one of the most listened-to voices on personal and career success. Denis is the author of 16 nonfiction books, including several international best sellers, “Seeds of Greatness,” “Being the Best,” “The Winner’s Edge,” “The Joy of Working,” and “Empires of the Mind.”

Denis’ audio album, “The Psychology of Winning” is the all-time best selling program on self-mastery.

!

Denis has studied and counselled winners in every field from Apollo astronauts to Superbowl champions, from sales achievers to government leaders and youth groups. During the 1980′s, he served as Chairman of Psychology on the U. S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Council, responsible for performance enhancement of all U. S. Olympic athletes.

!

A graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, and former Navy pilot, Denis holds a doctorate degree in human behaviour.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Denis in person but have listened to Denis’ audios multiple times; (repetition is the mother of skill). It is easy to see why Denis has trained Olympic athletes, Apollo astronauts and Fortune 500 executives. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time we've wasted in the past, we still have an entire tomorrow.” “We can change the changeable, accept the unchangeable, and remove ourselves from the unacceptable.” “Life is inherently risky and there is only one big risk we must avoid at all costs; that is the risk of doing nothing.” “Happiness is the experience of living every moment with love, grace and gratitude.” “We can view life as a continuous learning experience. Everything that is past is either a learning experience to grow on, a beautiful memory to reflect on, or a motivating factor to act upon. We are supposed to forgive everyone; everyone includes ourselves.” “Virtually nothing on earth can stop people with a positive attitude who have our goal clearly in sight. We get excited and enthusiastic about our own dreams. This excitement is like a forest fire – we can smell it, taste it, and see it from a mile away.”

Chapter 13 Florence Scovel Shinn!

simplereminders.com

Florence Scovel Shinn (September 24, 1871, Camden, New Jersey – October 17, 1940) was an American artist and book illustrator who became a New Thought spiritual teacher and metaphysical writer in her middle years. She best known for her first book, “The Game of Life and How to Play It”.

!

Florence was a powerful metaphysical writer who derived many of her examples from the Bible and adapted those examples to real life.

!

Florence articulated her philosophy by saying “The invisible forces are ever working for humans who are always ‘pulling the strings’ ourselves, though we may not always realise and know it. She emphasises that “owing to the vibratory power of words, we as humans, must take care to voice only what we want to attract.”

! !

~

I was able to achieve one of my lifetime goals within 2 years and 40 times bigger than I had originally planned by using Florence’s “The Game of Life and How To Play It”.

!

I have experienced first hand the power of using her affirmations and manifesting using the power of spirit’ and I recommend that manifestation is best accomplished involving spiritual practice - rather than sharing and announcing goals on a relational level.

!

Florence’s affirmations, though focussed on the Bible, can be applicable to any reader with a spiritual awareness.

Chapter 14 Fredric Lehrman!

!

Fredric Lehrman grew up in mid Manhattan where his education was somewhat unusual even for a New Yorker.

!

He started at Hunter College Elementary School, which had an experimental program for gifted children.

www.nomaduniversity.com

!

Frederic then attended the Rudolf Steiner High School. From there he went on to major in Musicology at Columbia University, with graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.

In order to protect himself from his brother, who was becoming a black belt in Aikido, Fredric turned to Tai Chi, the only effective method of self-defence which was practical for musical hands. For nine years Frederic was a senior student of the late Tai Chi master, Cheng Man-ch'ing, and founded several permanent schools of Tai-Chi Chuan in major U.S. cities. Frederic has explored many other techniques of conscious evolution and systems of biological energy, and has traveled world wide as a consultant and seminar leader on topics related to education, health, business, psychology, and relationship dynamics.

In 1986 Frederic founded “Nomad University”. Through his diverse experience in educational and business settings, as well as his concentrated and extended apprenticeships with masters from various cultures, Fredric has evolved a style of teaching which has been highly successful. His students find that their participation in these programs leads them to a heightened ability to educate themselves in all situations, and to trust their own sensibilities in evaluating information and in setting personal priorities. Nomad University provides a growing network of resources for self-directed education, and brings together outstanding teachers in all fields with students worldwide.

! !

One of the pay offs of making a hobby and passion an area of research is that we often discover resources that are not widely known and acclaimed. Fredric Lehrman's “Prosperity Consciousness” six audio tape series is one perfect example.

I hope by including his brilliant work in “Gain Without Pain” we will in someway contribute to making his brilliant work even more available to an even wider worldwide audience. .

Chapter 15 James Mapes! !

James Mapes is the founder of “Quantum Leap Thinking”, creator of “The Transformational Coach”, expert on the psychology of “applied imagination.” James is a best-selling author, highly acclaimed business speaker, consultant, seminar leader and personal excellence coach.

www.nomaduniversity.com

!

For over 30 years, James has been an ardent student of human behaviour and dedicated to helping individuals, teams and organisations identify and break through barriers to reach our goals and achieve success. James articulately and eloquently encourages us to be open to new ways of thinking, and his goal is to help everyone make the “quantum leap” toward more creative, productive and confident lives.

!

For both businesses and individuals, his message promotes an innovative, powerful way of thinking and provides a new-found mastery over our imagination and perceptions so that, in his words, “the invisible becomes visible and the impossible becomes possible.” The results have been nothing short of extraordinary, creating key breakthroughs in both organisational and personal excellence.

!

In the 1970′s, James became interested in the power of the subconscious mind. To better understand this intriguing area, he researched psychology, philosophy, neurology and eventually, hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. James’ expertise quickly earned him recognition as a clinical hypnotist, becoming highly effective in assisting clients in weight reduction, smoking cessation, the elimination of phobias and pain reduction for terminally ill cancer patients. As a skilled practitioner of regression techniques, James has helped the New York City Police Department in “memory recovery” with both witnesses to, and victims of, crime and he has worked with professional athletes to help improve their performance in their sport.

!! ! ! ! !

~

Using James’ 14-point system offers precise practical “how to” strategies to make positive changes in our lives which can be made in an instant with a simple shift of our thinking.

“The freedom to dream and reach for dreams is the essence of quantum leap thinking.” “Learning can be a lifetime process only when the circle of learning is in continuous motion.” “The truth is, we are all leaders. Interactive learning is the process by which we learn from one another. Interactive learning is not only the best way, it is the only way we are going to succeed. Unlike learning under the guidance of teachers, parents, or management, interactive learning is self-perpetuating. Like a solar panel, it makes use of the elements, and the elements never go away. We are the elemental pieces that make up the whole of our education.” “A Power Group goes beyond friendship. The group provide us with that magical synergy: 1 + 1 = 3, the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. It is our brainpower multiplied. Now we want to take the leaps that move our lives to higher levels of quality, we recognise we cannot do it alone.” “We forgive failure and reward success. We perform at our best when contributing our talents to something we believe in. Quantum leap thinkers accept our weaknesses and focus on our strengths.” “Outside stimuli or signals, in and of themselves, hold no power over us. We give or take away the power of outside stimuli by how we choose to respond to them.” “Teams are our greatest tool to produce quantum leaps with speed. True teaming requires total commitment and a fundamental change of mind-set for management. Teams must evolve through a natural organic process.”

Chapter 17 Jim Rohn! Jim Rohn was an influential speaker, author and teacher on success. Jim’s own rise from humble beginnings to wealth was the basis for him entering the self-help speaking field and his unique approach has influenced many prominent leaders in the field such as; Anthony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Brian Tracy and numerous people and businesses around the world.

!

Jim was inspired after hearing a talk by entrepreneur John Earl Shoaff at 25 years old. Jim was employed at a nutritional supplement company where Shoaff was vice president of sales. The personal development that Jim undertook during this time enabled him to become a millionaire at the age of 31.

!

A friend invited Jim to tell the story of his rise to prosperity to a local Rotary Club. The talk was entitled ‘Idaho Farm Boy Makes it to Beverly Hills’. It was so well received that Jim was soon in demand as a speaker.

!

Jim created over 17 books, audio and video programs and his writings and talks covered a broad range of topics, including understanding the market place, sales, network marketing, leadership, personal development, finance, stages of life, communication, character development and goal setting.

!

Jim has a simple, empowering philosophy, emphasising that today and everyday we have the ability to learn from the past and to build a better future – no matter what our past may be. Jim’s message of when we become “more than we currently are…we can attract more than we currently have” is profound.

! ! ! !

~

While attending Tony Robbins’ ‘Date with Destiny’ in Cannes, France a friend, John, could not stop talking about Tony’s teacher; Jim Rohn. During that course I listened to multiple tapes by Jim whose dry humour and no nonsense presentation style leaves us in no doubt whatsoever that we are the most crucial and important determining factor in our wealth and success. Jim sums it up by saying; “for things to change; we’ve got to change. For things to get better; we’ve got to get better!”

“Only by giving more are we able to receive more than we already have.” “Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. People don't fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every single day. Success is a few simple disciplines, practiced everyday. It is the accumulative weight of our disciplines and our judgments that leads people to either failure of fortune.” “The best motivation is self-motivation. Many people say; "I wish someone would come by and turn me on." What if they don't show up? We've got to have a better plan for our lives. Motivation is what gets us started. Habit is what keeps us going." “Formal education will make people a living; self-education makes us a fortune." "We don't get paid for the hour. We get paid for the value we bring to the hour." “Indecision is the thief of opportunity. Time is more valuable than money. We can get more money but we can't get more time.” "One of the greatest gifts we can give to anyone is the gift of our attention.”

Chapter 18 John Gray! John Gray is an internationally renowned relationship counsellor and best-selling author in the field of personal relationships. His “Mars and Venus” series of books chart the differences between women and men in terms of the impact of psychology, physiology and environment and how this affects communication and relations between them. John suggests techniques that women and men can use to enhance relationships at different phases of love and life.

! !

In 1969 John learnt the Transcendental Meditation technique and then spent nine years as the personal assistant to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation. He obtained bachelors and masters degrees in the Science of Creative Intelligence, a science of consciousness developed by Maharishi. John then became a family therapist and a member of the American Counselling Association and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counsellors.

!

In 1992 John’s most well-known book, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” was published. It became a long-term bestseller, selling over 7 million copies. It was published in 40 languages. While some have thought that the book oversimplifies the dynamics of men/women relationships.

! ! !

~

John is yet another product of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s valuable teachings, creative consciousness and brilliance. John’s presentations are humorous, yet immensely practical and applicable to anyone looking to enhance our relationships. His insights into the differences between how men and woman relate, deal with stress, and approach life can offer a profound boost to the quality of any relationship.

“Men are motivated when we feel needed - while women are motivated when they feel cherished. When a man can listen to a woman's feelings without getting angry and frustrated, he gives her a wonderful gift. He makes it safe for her to express herself. The more she is able to express herself, the more she feels heard, cared for, understood and respected, and the more she is able to give a man the loving trust, acceptance, appreciation, admiration, approval, and encouragement that he needs.” “When men and women are able to respect and accept our differences then love has a chance to blossom.” “We are unique individuals with unique experiences.” “To love someone is to acknowledge the goodness of who we are. Through loving a person we awaken our awareness of their own innate goodness. It is as though they cannot know how worthy they are until they look into the mirror of our love and see themselves.” “Life is filled with rhythms-day and night, hot and cold, summer and winter, spring and fall, cloudy and clear. Likewise in a relationship, men and women have our own rhythms and cycles.” “After learning, please be realistic. We want to give ourselves permission to keep making mistakes. We also want to give ourselves the gift of understanding that we may not remember everything we learned all at once.” “To love someone who is not loving us … is not to love at all!”

Chapter 19 Jose Stevens!

Jose Stevens describes the core source of human fear which he refers to as “inner dragons” (a “dragon” being a metaphor for our fear patterns). These dragons he labels as; greed, self-deprecation, arrogance, impatience, mar tyrdom, self-destruction and stubbornness. The dragons deplete our power and energy.

~

Jose’s book is clever, compassionate and effective and I am surprised that it is not more widely available and acclaimed. Jose’s sections on the origins of the dragons, true life stories about the effects of the dragons and the solutions and affirmations Jose offers make this a viable, valuable, self discovery resource.

“Later in life, most people tend to see the glass half empty instead of half full. Then the dragons fixate them on what is missing. When good fortune comes to them, they fail to see it. They can only see what is still not there.” “Research demonstrates that touch in child rearing and parenting is essential for infant mammals. Infants deprived of touch in their earliest days and weeks actually wither and die even if they are given food and shelter.” “The only way to remain “dragon” free is to unconditionally love ourselves and fellows. The greatest teachers in the world have all taught this basic principle.” “The seven “dragons” are the main forms of unfounded fear, and to know them is the first step in eliminating fear.” “We create the conditions that promote our experience of unconditional love or essence contact with people around us. Essence contact is hard to repeat by design. It has to happen naturally and is a product of our normal, healthy human desire to connect deeply.” “We will find worth and satisfaction in being loved sometimes for the first time by discovering our own essence-selves.” “As we conquer our dragons despair will be replaced by a sense of having choices, and with those choices will come the personal power to select once more. We will find pleasure in living and will discover a sense of self that is kind but firm.”

Chapter 20 Joseph Murphy! Joseph Murphy was an early exponent, author and speaker in the area of the development of human potential. His book, “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” is a classic and influential text on how the subconscious mind affects our lives and how it can be used to promote human fulfillment. The influence of his teachings can be seen in contemporary motivational speakers and writers in the area of the law of attraction and the development of human potential. Joseph was ordained into Religious Science and Divine Science, New Thought organisations that see that attunement with the infinite spirit within us as a means of promoting human development and fulfilment of desires. The Law of Attraction is a key aspect of New Thought beliefs and Joseph said: “We were born to be rich. We grow rich by the use of our God-given faculties, by tuning in with the Infinite and as our minds become productive and full of good ideas, our activities will become more productive and will bring us all kinds of material riches.”

!

Joseph also delved deeply into Eastern thought and was a scholar of the I-Ching and he also studied extensively in India.

!

Joseph was born and grew up in Ireland. He had a Catholic upbringing and studied for the priesthood and became a Jesuit. After an experience with healing prayer, Joseph left the Jesuits and settled in New York, where he became a pharmacist. At this time he became aware of New Thought teachings through attending the Church of the Healing Christ.

!

Joseph moved to Los Angeles in 1940 where he was ordained into Religious Science by its founder, Ernest Holmes. In 1949 he became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church. Joseph built it into one of the largest Divine Science congregations in the United States. While in Los Angeles he attained a doctorate in psychology from the University of Southern California. During this period, he also began to write and publish books. Joseph lectured extensively and had a weekly radio program.

!

Apart from “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”, Joseph also wrote “Your Infinite Power to be Rich”, “The Cosmic Power Within You” and “Secrets of the I-Ching”.

I love that his teachings, writings, counselling and lecturing are so easy to understand and so personally expressed.

!

Joseph was an inspiration to thousands all over the world. HIs many years of spiritual research studying many of the world’s major religions makes him an absolute authority in his area of expertise.

!

Joseph's message is that we all have the power to make our lives even more healthy, joyous, useful and outstandingly successful and he offers simple, easy to apply methods to help us reap the rewards of this power. His books are written with simplicity and clarity giving us an insight how we may all achieve personal power which overcomes fear and banishes worry with faith; opening the path to even greater wealth and success.

“The treasure house is within us. We need only look within for the answers to our hearts’ desires.” “Our desire is our prayer. It comes out of our deepest needs and it reveals the things we want in life. We clearly picture the fulfilment of our desire now and feel its reality and we will experience the joy of the answered prayer.” “God is the source of our supply. His riches flow to us freely, copiously, and abundantly. All our needs are met at any and every moment of time and point in space; that we acknowledge this. There is always a divine surplus.” “The only path by which another person can upset us is through our own thought. We just keep our conscious minds busy with expectation of the best. We occupy our minds with the concepts of harmony, health, peace, and good will, and wonders happen in our lives.” “The way to conquer darkness is with light; the way to overcome cold is with heat; the way to overcome the negative thought is to substitute it with the good thought. We affirm the good, and the bad vanishes naturally.” “The first thing to remember is the dual nature of our minds. The subconscious mind is constantly amenable to the power of suggestion; furthermore the subconscious mind has complete control of the functions, conditions, and sensations of our bodies. We can trust the subconscious mind to heal us. It made our bodies, and it knows all of its processes and functions. It knows much more than our conscious minds about healing and restoring us to perfect balance. With keep our conscious minds occupied with expectations of the best.” “We recognise the power of our subconscious minds.”

Chapter 21 Judith Hendin!

Judith Hendin, Ph.D is the author of the book, “The Self behind the Symptom: How Shadow Voices Heal Us”. Her research has been published in the USA Body Psychotherapy Journal.

!

Judith is the originator of the Conscious Body process and the founder of the Conscious Body and Voice Dialogue Institute.

!

She has led Conscious Body Voice Dialogue training for facilitators internationally in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Estonia, France, Slovenia, and the Netherlands.

! ! !

“Conscious Body” is a process developed by Judith in the early 1990s. “Conscious Body” sees physical symptoms as a portal to deep inner awareness and transformation. The process focuses on body symptoms and diseases to gain access to a hidden part of the personality — the “self behind the symptom” — that wants to be acknowledged.

!

Judith served on the Voice Dialogue staff of Shakti Gawain at her intensive workshops around the United States, and also on the staff of Hal and Sidra Stone, the originators of Voice Dialogue.

!

Judith graduated from the University of Chicago, Phi Beta Kappa, in cultural anthropology with a specialisation in non-verbal communication. She received a fellowship to study abroad with anthropologist-philosopher Gregory Bateson, during which she focused on movement and dance as an expression of culture. She also contributed movement research and co-authored a chapter with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi for his first book on Flow, Beyond Boredom and Anxiety.

!

As a somatic therapist, Judith is trained in deep tissue, neuromuscular, rehabilitative, movement, body-energy, and psyche-soma modalities. Prior to her somatic work, Judith was a professional dancer-choreographer, and she has performed with some of the world's leading companies, including Pilobolus. Known for her dramatic and comic portrayals, she appeared as a featured dancer in television specials and at dance festivals throughout North America.

!

All these experiences — somatics (bodymind), the Psychology of Selves, movement, and bodywork — developed Judith's sensitivity to the energetics of bodies and inner selves. For thirty years, she has been sharing the joy, insight, and transformation that come with this rich path. Judith is known for her delightful, entertaining, yet deeply moving, teaching style. She says, “This deep and

adventurous work has been the center of my life. I have seen it change lives countless times.”

! !

~

I consider Shakti Gawain of "Creative Visualization" fame to be an amazing leader with a compelling practical and effective message. When I met Shakti at the Omega Institute she offered us the chance to visit her beautiful home in Hawaii, Kai Mana. During the course Shakti introduced her friend and colleague, Judith Hendin. And after listening to Judith’s wisdom I knew that this genius would be someone who could make a massive difference in my life!

!

!

Judith is a senior facilitator and trainer of the work of Hal and Sidra Stone, and as such she is a proponent of the Voice Dialogue process for self discovery and awareness. She was an integral part of my healing from cancer and continues to this day to be a close confidant, great friend and an absolute inspiration to me. She has a growing list of readers, clients and fans worldwide, all who are touched by her deep insight, dedication, devotion and awareness.

! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

! !

! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“Bodies are devised to guide us in consciousness. When we look behind much pain and illness we will find characters inside bursting to express — emotions held back for decades, a little child who yearns to play, a terrified child who was severely abused, or a lion roaring with newfound power. Over time I found that it didn’t matter whether the issue was a migraine, a skin rash, a lung disease, or cancer — a hidden self always emerged. I realised that diseases, disorders, and syndromes are one and the same, namely a symptom from the bodypsyche that points to a hidden self that needs to be found, acknowledged, and heard. These inner characters, and many more, provide medicine beyond measure.” “We can create our own medicine chest. Imagine a medicine cabinet that holds bottles labeled with different healing remedies. On one shelf might stand containers marked “Herbs,” “Nutrition,” “Exercise,” and “Rest.” On another shelf stand bottles labeled with various selves that are medicinal for us. There might

Guy Bowden

be one bottle labeled “Straight Talker,” another labeled, “Playful Child,” and others labeled “Tears,” “Anger,” or “Power.” As we learn to tune into our body signals and hear the call of a disowned self, we can reach into our inner medicine cabinet and swallow — embody — the appropriate elixir. Activating the energy medicine of opposites bequeaths us several gifts. First, we return like refugees to reclaim the soil of our homeland, our bodies. Second, we become adventurers in consciousness, with our bodies leading the way. Third, we heal the body with innate medicine. The energy reservoir is enormous, and the effect on our electrical and chemical bodies cannot be underestimated.” “The self behind the symptom is waiting to be found. So many of us have treated pain or illness as an inconvenience, as something to be feared, and, at worst, as an enemy to be fought with the finest weapons money and modern medicine can muster. Now we can see pain or illness as a friend, a self, with a message. We have direct access to the messenger, and we have a code for deciphering the message.” “In the work I do with body symptoms, called Conscious Body, the facilitator starts with the body symptom first and then relies on the unconscious to provide symbolic material that will lead to the disowned self associated with the body symptom. It is the discovery of the disowned self, as well as the encouragement of its energy to move through the body, that propels healing.” “Dance. We’ve all danced many kinds of dances: in rock bars, at weddings, perhaps ballet or ballroom, or alone in our living rooms. But there is another kind of dance—it’s magical, mystical, mysterious. It flows from the very source of our being, from all around us and from our deepest core. Then we are moved beyond our wildest imaginings. We become beauty, truth and power—power used well, for the highest benefit of ourselves and those we touch.” “Follow the energy. When we follow energy in sessions, both client and facilitator work in tandem. It’s like we are steering a two-person kayak. When we as paddlers coordinate our strokes, we steer the boat accurately and move it forward safely and effectively. But if each strikes their own paddling rhythm independently, it’s a mess. The kayak wobbles, forward motion is slight, and someone may end up in the drink. Energy awareness is of paramount importance. When facilitator and client find the energy of the moment and stay with it, the work will be precise, delicate, and thorough. We can stay alert to the energy, and trust that it is appearing for a good reason. Whenever a new energy arises and we explore it, the energetic landscape unfolds with astounding precision and depth. The emerging energy leads exactly where we need to go.”

! “There is a river that runs through our lives, an underground stream that carries our essential being. I have learned that once we enter into that stream, life is no longer lived in the ordinary sense. It becomes a journey, an adventure into unknown waters. Adversaries, conflict and illness become teachers. Sleep becomes a time of magical exploration. Relationships transform. The purpose is not to promote a path or a way, but to stir within you the excitement and uniqueness of your own evolutionary process. May you discover your own river and may your life become a meaningful voyage.”

I have always loved the concept that where we choose to live must be a reflection or a projection of what is going on inside us. The Feng Shui “Bagua” is a way of organising and using this profound Chinese wisdom to affect and enhance our lives.

!

Karen takes a simple concept of clutter clearing and compellingly makes a case that this is essential before we begin any Feng Shui. I am an avid proponent of “releasing” and thereafter replacing! Nature abhors a vacuum! And Karen’s clutter clearing is in sync with this philosophy. I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“The word ‘clutter’ derives from the Middle English word ‘clutter’, which means to coagulate – and that’s about as stuck as we can get… we use clearing our clutter to get unstuck.” “Feng Shui is the art of balancing and harmonising the flow of natural energies in our surroundings to create beneficial effects in our lives.” “Any kind of clutter creates an obstacle to the smooth flow of energy around a space. This in turn creates stuck-ness and confusion in the lives of the occupants.” “I have come to realise that clutter clearing is one of the most powerful, transformative aspects of feng shui there is. In most cases, feng shui cures and enhancements are only minimally effective until this has been done.” “Every aspect of our lives is anchored energetically in our living spaces, so clearing our clutter can completely transform our entire existence.” “The reason why clutter clearing is so effective is that while we are putting our external world in order there are corresponding changes going on internally too. Everything around us, especially our home environments, mirror our inner selves. So by changing our homes we are also changing the possibilities in our own lives”. “By sorting out the outer world, the inner starts slotting neatly into place.”

One of my friends Bill Cherry suggested I take a look at Ken’s “RSA animate changing education paradigms” on Youtube. Ken’s humorous yet heartfelt plea for us to recognise human uniqueness and individuality in education will transform the world.

!

Having researched and personally benefitted from the personal development world, one of my missions is to take relevant personal development teachings into mainstream education. I often do an exercise with my daughter, Chantelle, and her friend Kaylaa where I ask ‘What do they teach us in school?’ “What is relevant and what is not?”

!

And secondly, and as importantly, I ask; ‘What don’t they teach us in school - which will be relevant to our futures?” The answers I get are often enlightening and powerful.

!

It’s no mistake that many teachers; (but definitely not all), in school systems are poor role models who just teach laid down curriculums which do not include life skills, such as; money mindset, how to deal with death, emotional intelligence and many practical, essential life skills. We want to ensure that all educational systems empower our students with the freedom and power to choose - where creative excitement and meaning lead to the ability to lead effective, functional lives.

! ! ! ! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“We can never underestimate the vital importance of finding early in life the work that for us is play. This turns possible underachievers into happy warriors. Very many people go through their whole lives having no real sense of what their talents may be, or if they have any to speak of. We must change that.” “If we’re not prepared to be wrong, we’ll never come up with anything original.” “The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed -- it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardise education, but to personalise it. To build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.” “We have sold ourselves into a fast food model of education, and it's impoverishing peoples’ spirits and their energies as much as fast food is depleting their physical bodies.” “Education is about discovering ourselves, and we can't do this if we're trapped in a compulsion to conform. We can't be ourselves in a swarm.” “We are all born with extraordinary powers of imagination, intelligence, feeling, intuition, spirituality, and of physical and sensory awareness. Ken believes our only hope for the future is to adopt a new conception of human ecology, one in which we start to reconstitute our concept of the richness in human capacity. Creativity is as important now in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status.” “Young children are wonderfully confident in their own imaginations... Most people lose this confidence as they grow up. It is high time we inspire creativity in students”

Chapter 24 Kahlil Gibran!

Kahlil Gibran (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese artist, poet, and writer.

!

Born in the town of Bsharri in the north of modern-day Lebanon, as a young man he immigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in both English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Kahlil is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.

!

Kahlil is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book “The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well gaining popularity in the 1930s and again especially in the 1960s counter culture. Kahlil is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao zu.

! ! ! !

~

Kahlil's masterful story enables us to receive his timeless, profound advice in a gentle compassionate way. I often refer to the magnificent, timeless advice that this spiritual master offers; not only is the content so relevant and profound but the romantic poetic style of writing make this an artistic literary masterpiece.

! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

(on children) “Our children are not our children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through us but not from us,And though they are with us yet they belong not to us.We may give them our love but not our thoughts,For they have their own thoughts.” (on death) “But how shall we find it unless we seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If we would indeed behold the spirit of death, we open our hearts wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.” (on work) “Many have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune. But I say to you that when we work we fulfil a part of earth's furthest dream, assigned to us when that dream was born, And in keeping ourselves with labour we are in truth loving life, And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life’s inner most secret.” (on giving) “Surely the fruit cannot say to the root, 'Be like me, ripe and full and ever giving of your abundance.’ For to the fruit giving is a need, as receiving is a need to the root.” (on marriage) “Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of us be alone, even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.” (on giving) “These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and our coffer is never empty. There are we who give with joy, and that joy is our reward. And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism.” (on buying and selling) “To us the earth yields her fruit, and we shall not want if we but know how to fill our hands. It is in exchanging the gifts of the earth that we shall find abundance and be satisfied.Yet unless the exchange be in love and kindly justice, it will but lead some to greed and others to hunger.”

Chapter 25 Leo Buscaglia! !

Felice Leonardo Buscaglia was born in Los Angeles, California on March 31, 1924 into a family of Italian immigrants. Leo spent his early childhood in Aosta, Italy, before going back to the United States for education. Leo was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School (Los Angeles). After Navy service in World War II, Leo entered the University of Southern California, where he earned three degrees before eventually joining the faculty. Upon retirement, Leo was named “Professor at Large”, one of only two such designations on campus at that time.

!

Leo gained fame on the USC campus through his noncredit course titled "Love 1A," which became the basis for his first book, titled simply LOVE. Leo’s unique, dynamic speaking style was discovered by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and his televised lectures earned great popularity in the 1980s. At one point his talks, always shown during fund raising periods, were the top earners of all PBS programs. This national exposure, coupled with the heartfelt storytelling style of his books, helped make all of his titles national best sellers; five were once on the New York Times Best Sellers List simultaneously!

! !

~

One of the most underestimated personal development series that I have benefitted from listening to is Anthony Robbins “PowerTalk Series”. Listening to Tony interview Leo was so deeply touching, moving, inspiring and empowering.

!

Leo's powerful description of how one of his students committed suicide and how few of her fellows students even realised she was no longer in the class, helped inspire me to become even more acutely aware of - and compassionate for those around me.

! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” “Love is always bestowed as a gift - freely, willingly and without expectation. We don't love to be love; we love to love. Love is life. And if We miss love, We miss life.” “Stop brooding. Get on with living and loving. We don't have forever. Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time... It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other. What love we've given, we'll have forever. What love we fail to give, will be lost for all eternity.” “It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.” “The easiest thing to be in the world is ourselves. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want Us to be. We refuse to let them put Us in that position.” “I have a very strong feeling that the opposite of love is not hate - it's apathy. It's not giving a damn.” “Change is the end result of all true learning.”

Chapter 26 Lin Yutang!

!

Lin Yutang (October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976) was a Chinese writer, translator, linguist and inventor. Lin's informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West.

! !

~

!

Lin's engaging, entertaining style of writing makes his "Importance of Living" masterpiece easy and fun to read. At the same time he presents many alternative perspectives to the western approach of living. Two subjects which Lin covers and that have stayed with me are; the importance of loafing. And what to do with the mail when it arrives. Namely, put it in a drawer and leave it for a 3 month period. Below is a quotation of his profound advice which I have implemented. The same can be applied to email.

!

I have focussed the last 23 years aiming to be even more effective and even more organised and even more wealthy and even more successful and Lin's book has provided me with a refreshing counter balance and outlook to this driven, focussed way of being.

!

One of my favourite quotes from the movie 'Sabrina' is “more is not always better, sometimes more is just more” and in some way this is Lin’s message too.

! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

! ! !

!

“The three great American vices seem to be efficiency, punctuality and the desire for achievements and success. They are the things that make the Americans so unhappy and so nervous. They steal from themselves their inalienable right of loafing and cheat themselves of many a good, idle and beautiful afternoon. One must start out with a belief that there are no catastrophes in this world, and that, besides the noble art of getting things done, there is a nobler art of leaving things undone. *On the whole, if one answers letters promptly, the result is about as good or as bad as if he had never answered them at all. After all, nothing happens, and while one may have missed a few good appointments, one may have also avoided a few unpleasant ones. Most of the letters are not worth answering, if you keep them in your drawer for three months; reading them three months afterwards, one might realise how utterly futile and what a waste of time it would have been to answer them all. It doesn't matter, simply because it doesn’t matter.” “Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials. We who are wise won't be busy, and those who are too busy can't be wise. When we can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, we have learned how to live.” “The man who has not the habit of reading is imprisoned in his immediate world, in respect to time and space. His life falls into a set routine; he is limited to contact and conversation with a few friends and acquaintances, and he sees only what happens in his immediate neighbourhood. From this prison there is no escape. But the moment he takes up a book, he immediately enters a different world, and if it is a good book, he is immediately put in touch with one of the best talkers of the world. This talker leads him on and carries him into a different country or a different age, or unburdens to him some of his personal regrets, or discusses with him some special line or aspect of life that the reader knows nothing about. An ancient author puts him in communion with a dead spirit of

long ago, and as he reads along, he begins to imagine what the ancient author looked like and what type of person he was.” “If one's bowels move, one is happy, and if they don't move, one is unhappy. That is all there is to it.” “I regard the discovery of one’s favourite author as the most critical event in one’s intellectual development.” “There is so much to love and to admire in this life that it is an act of ingratitude not to be happy and content in this existence.” “Sometimes it is more important to discover what one cannot do, than what one can do.”

Louise L. Hay was born October 8, 1926 and is an American motivational author, and the founder of Hay House. She has authored several self-help books, and is best known for her 1984 book, “You Can Heal Your Life”.

!

Despite having many ailments as a child, teenager and young adult Louise had never thought of a link between her thoughts and her health. The metaphysical link whereby Louise suggests our thought patterns have a direct link with our “dis-ease" was a miraculous revelation. Far from blaming someone for being sick Louise compassionately suggests probable causes and healing affirmations which offer almost divine inspiration and insight and at the same time give us back our power to take the lead in our own healing and health.

Chapter 28 Marianne Williamson!

!

Marianne (born July 8, 1952) is a spiritual mentor, author and lecturer. She has published ten books, including four New York Times #1 bestsellers. Marianne serves on the Board of Directors of the RESULTS organisation, which works to end poverty in the United States and around the world. Marianne is also the force behind “Sister Giant”, a series of seminars and teaching sessions that provides women with the information and tools needed to be political candidates. Through these seminars she encourages women to run for office and align their politics with their spiritual values.

!

www.marianne.com

!

Marianne has been a guest on television programs such as “Oprah”, “Larry King Live”, “Good Morning America” and “Charlie Rose”. In December 2006, a Newsweek magazine poll named her one of the fifty most influential baby boomers. Marianne bases her teaching and writing on a set of books called “A Course in Miracles”, a self-study program of spiritual psychotherapy, based on universal spiritual themes.

!

~

!

One of the most powerful and majestic writings of Marianne is included as my first quote below.

! !

This is often attributed to Nelson Mandela’s inauguration speech. During my research for “Gain Without Pain” I found this not to be the case. For anyone interested see www.snopes.com for more information on this widely held misconception.

!

Marianne's work is not only deeply moving but also extremely effective when applied to life. I am proud to say that I have incorporated her teachings into my own life and advised many people to read her “rose bush”* analogy about relationships which enhances the quality of relationships once we understand what she says.

!

! !

*“Our vulnerability to the myth of “Mr. Right” stems from most peoples’ glorification of romantic love. The ego uses romantic love for its "special" purposes, leading most people to jeopardise their relationships by overvaluing the romantic content. The difference between a friendship and a romance can be illustrated with the image of a long stemmed rose. The stem is the friendship; the blossom the romance. Because the ego is sensation-oriented, most peoples’ focus automatically goes to the blossom. But all the nourishment that the blossom needs in order to live, reaches it through the stem. The stem might look

Guy Bowden

Gain Without Pain

!

boring in comparison, but if people take the blossom off the stem it will not last for long”.

Marianne shared that image in a lecture once, and a woman then added a lovely thought: “A long-term romance is like a rose bush. In any given season, a blossom might fall off. But if the plant is well nourished, then the season will come around again, and new blossoms appear. The disappearance of romantic fervour doesn't necessarily spell the end of a wonderful relationship, except to the ego. The Spirit can see the seeds of rebirth in any pattern of decline”

! ! !! ! ! ! !

! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

! ! !

!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Our playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around us. We are all meant to shine, as children do.* We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” “Are we depressed because we’re in recession, or are we in recession because we’re depressed?” “In A Course in Miracles, sin is defined as 'loveless perception." The way out of sin or fear is through opening the mind to love. Love casts out fear the way light casts out darkness. The shift from fear to love is a miracle. It doesn't fix things on the earth plane; it addresses the real source of our problems, which is always on the level of consciousness. Thoughts are like data programmed into a computer, registered on the screen of our lives. If we don't like what we see on

! !

Guy Bowden

Gain Without Pain

the screen, there's no point in going up to the screen and trying to erase it. Thought is Cause; experience is Effect. If we don't like the effects in our lives, we can change the nature of our thinking. Love in our minds produce love in our lives. This is the meaning of Heaven.” “There is no love but God's. There are no different categories of love. There isn't one kind of love between a mother and a child, another between lovers, and another between friends. The love that is real is the love that lies at the heart of all relationships. That is the love of God and it doesn't change with form or circumstance.Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn. The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudices and the acceptance of love back in our hearts. Love is the essential reality and our purpose on earth. To be consciously aware of it, to experience love in ourselves and fellows, is the meaning of life. Meaning does not lie in things. Meaning lies in us.” “A miracle worker is an artist of the soul. There's no higher art than living good life. An artist informs the world of what's available behind the masks we all wear. That's what we're all here to do. The reason so many of us are obsessed with becoming stars is because we're not yet starring in our own lives. The cosmic spotlight isn't pointed at us; it radiates from within us. Marianne used to feel like she was waiting for someone to discover her, to "produce" her, like Lana Turner at the drugstore. Ultimately Marianne realised that the person she was waiting for was herself. If we wait for the world's permission to shine, we will never receive it. The ego doesn't give that permission. Only God does, and He has already done so. He has sent us here as His personal representatives and is asking us to channel His love into the world. Are we waiting for a more important job? There isn't one.” “It takes courage...to endure the sharp pains of self discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.” “Personal transformation can and does have global effects. As we go, so goes the world, for the world is us. The revolution that will save the world is ultimately a personal one.”

Chapter 29 Mark Bryan and Julia Cameron!

!

Through their highly effective seminars, Mark Bryan and Julia Cameron have helped many people free ourselves from the painful cycle of acting out with money. “The Money Drunk” offers new perspectives on the real roots of money problems, showing how to dismantle negative family and societal programming about money and how to undo the destructive patterns that sabotage peoples’ financial success. The program teaches new, more constructive habits to anyone who has ever had a problem with money.

!

In a society where it is often easier to discuss sex than money, many people have hidden issues about personal finances. When fending off bill collectors, begging for salary advances, or borrowing from relatives becomes a way of life, unresolved money problems can lead to enormous stress and destroy relationships, careers, and lives. Enter the concept of “Money Sober” to help us!

! Do we recognise ourselves or someone we love in any of these descriptions? !

! !

• The Compulsive Spender - Do we buy things and hide them? • The Big Deal Chaser - Do we refuse to watch our money because one big deal is going to make everything all right? • The Maintenance Money Drunk - Is the pay the only thing we like about our job? • The Poverty Addict - Do we feel morally superior to people with money? • The Cash Codependent - Are we afraid to say no to our partner about money?

~

This incredibly insightful and compassionate body of work can enlighten anyone who has problems with money. It shows us that our relation with money begins from the inside out and taking this approach helps us to take back our power to control our own financial destinies.

!

“The Money Drunk” is incredibly well formatted, compassionately acknowledging the problems many of us face and offering constructive, effective and life changing solutions. I suggest everyone do Julia and Mark’s 90 day financial awareness challenge being very aware when we start that taking it is by no means a walk in the park!

! !

Guy Bowden

!

!

Each and every time I and my clients have taken on the challenge it brings unique insight and understanding of ourselves and our relation to money creating new dimensions and depths of understanding.

! !

Money as a form of exchange is an important issue that affects all strata of society, as Mark and Julia point out;

! !

“Over and over, we are struck by the "selectivity” of the money drunk memory. we have come to believe that financial amnesia is a blocking device used to evade pain. we call it “terminal vagueness. "To the non-money drunk, such vagueness is infuriating and even suspect. "how can they not know?“ Julia and Mark have come to believe that stress creates a kind of screening process by which disturbing details are set aside.

!

And for a money drunk, "disturbing details" involve money. When Doug told us this story, he did not really see cause and effect. like many money drunks, he was out of touch with the realities of "money in money out ". The concept of "if you don’t spend it, you'll still have it " eluded him.

!

Denial is the hardest mask to remove because people are hiding from themselves. Reality often eludes them, lie by lie, because they are constantly maintaining their "happy face, " never really willing to look into the mirror beyond their own facade. This denial mechanism keeps them out of reality.

!

And soon as their fantasy of financial manageability comes crashing down the money drunks’ hit bottom.

!

Some when they still have houses and cars. Some wait to wakeup until they’re homeless, evicted by their last landlord. This moment of clarity, of awakening to the truth, is called the "bottom." and the bottom is a feeling-not a place.

!

It is a feeling of surrender, of "I can't take this anymore. "and some people must be in more pain to hit bottom than fellows. Like the old joke in AA, "alcoholics come from all walks of life. from Yale to jail, from Park avenue to park benches, "money drunks too have different tolerances for pain.”

!

One mantra I have found incredibly useful when someone does reach the bottom is in any addiction is; “I deserve better.”

!

Two concepts presented in this book that have resulted in a sustainable and measurable lifestyle shift for me are; being aware of a “Money Drunk’s” propensity to “instant amnesia” and; on focusing on ‘progress rather than perfection’ which has had the effect of permeating into all other areas of my life to beneficial effect. Both these concepts are covered in the quotations below.

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“We have written ‘Money drunk/money sober’ in order to share our experience and our hope. Because we are teachers, we believe we can teach these principles to anyone. We have interviewed, learned from, and taught hundreds of money drunks. We know unequivocally that we have identified the problem and mapped a way out. For ourselves, we have watched our incomes double. We've enjoyed the establishment of solvency and the gradual repayment of debts. We have seen the focus of our lives change to serenity and fulfillment instead of the former money madness that left us no peace.’ “The addiction to money is progressive, has its roots in self-esteem issues, and results in a downward spiral.” “We are struck by the ‘selectivity' of the money drunk memory. We have come to believe that “financial amnesia” is a blocking device used to evade pain. We call it ‘Terminal Vagueness’.” “We want to focus on progress, not perfection. It always takes a money drunk sometime to sober up.” “In talking with workaholics, a chord that we found struck repeatedly was "instant amnesia" about their accomplishments. The analogy we found ourselves using was that everyday they went to "life school" and wrote their names and good deeds on the black board and every night their low self-worth sneaked in and erased their good records.” “No matter how much they had done to prove themselves worthy, the proof never seemed to tilt the scales in their favour. For some people a big deal equals love and respect. The big deal equals a personal warranty that his or her life has been worthwhile, not misspent, not foolish” “Every deal is just one deal in a continuing body of work, so we stopped waiting to live our lives; and two, that self esteem is an inside job, so we no longer need to broadcast our success’. I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

!

“We can clear the slate of the past. It begins with awareness, honesty, and openness. The process is complete when we reach a state of acceptance and peace toward all events from the past. Today, we will begin the process of letting go of all self-defeating feelings and beliefs connected to past relationships. We will clear our slates so we are free to love and be loved.” “People are human and vulnerable, and that is wonderful. We can accept and cherish that idea. Expecting others to be perfect puts us in that codependent state of moral superiority. Expecting ourselves to be perfect makes us feel rigid and inferior. We can let go of both ideas. We do not need to go to the other extreme, tolerating anything people throw our way. We can still expect appropriate, responsible behaviour from ourselves. But most of us can afford to loosen up a bit. And when we stop expecting others to be perfect, we may discover that they're doing much better than we thought. When we stop expecting ourselves to be perfect, we’ll discover the beauty in ourselves. We take time to celebrate. We celebrate our successes, our growth, our accomplishments. We celebrate ourselves and who we are.” “Empowering and complimenting ourselves will not make us lazy. It will nurture us and enable us to give, do, and be our best. Today, we will do our best, then let it go. God, help us to stop criticising ourselves so we can start appreciating how far we've come.” “We can let our children have their own process of living; we can have our own process. And, we can take care of ourselves during that process. We seek balance. We seek wisdom. We seek not to have control, but to own our power as people who are parents. Today, God, help us find an appropriate balance of responsibility to our children. Help us parent through nurturing, instead of control.” “Meditation and prayer are powerful recovery behaviours that work. We need to be patient. It is not reasonable to expect immediate answers, insight, or inspiration. And solutions are coming. They are already on the way, if we have done our part - meditate and pray - and then let the rest go. Whether we pray and meditate first thing in the morning, during a coffee break, or in the evening is our choice.”

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” “Boundaries emerge from deep within. They are connected to letting go of guilt and shame, and to changing our beliefs about what we deserve. As our thinking about this becomes clearer, so will our boundaries. Boundaries are also connected to a Higher Timing than our own. We’ll set a limit when we’re ready, and not a moment before. So will others. There’s something magical about reaching that point of becoming ready to set a limit. We know we mean what we say; others take us seriously too. Things change, not because we’re controlling others, but because we’ve changed.”

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (born 29 September 1933, in Fiume, Italy – now Rijeka, Croatia, Europe) is a Hungarian psychology professor, who emigrated to the United States at the age of 22.

Now at Claremont Graduate University, he is the former head of the department of psychology at the University of Chicago and of the department of sociology and anthropology at Lake Forest College.

!

Luckily for me I make a point of referring to people by their first names (I think it makes the world a friendlier place) otherwise Mihaly may not have made it into the book!

!

Mihaly has chosen a fascinating subject to study and “Gain Without Pain is all about making our lives and our learnings one long enjoyable autotelic experience.

!

Mihaly accurately suggests that by matching our competence with our confidence our lives naturally flow. "Flow" and "Good Business" are well researched and often referenced and with good reason. They are outstanding bodies of work which expose the myth that money equals happiness, instead suggesting that once a certain amount is reached our motivations become more varied.

!

Mihaly talks of the phenomenology of enjoyment and goes on to give us eight major components which are described simply and provide a magnificent framework, if we are not in flow, to recalibrate and get back into it.

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“The optimal state of inner experience is one in which there is order in consciousness. This happens when psychic energy—or attention—is invested in realistic goals, and when skills match the opportunities for action. The pursuit of a goal brings order in awareness because we must concentrate attention on the task at hand and momentarily forget everything else. These periods of stretching to overcome challenges are what we find to be the most enjoyable of our lives. A person who has achieved control over psychic energy and has invested it in consciously chosen goals cannot help but grow into a more complex being. By stretching skills, by reaching toward higher challenges, such a person becomes an increasingly extraordinary individual.” “If we are interested in something, we will focus on it, and if we focus attention on anything, it is likely that we will become interested in it. Many of the things we find interesting are not so by nature, but because we took the trouble of paying attention to them.” “To overcome the anxieties and depressions of contemporary life, individuals must become independent of the social environment to the degree that we no longer respond exclusively in terms of its rewards and punishments. To achieve such autonomy, we learn to provide rewards to ourselves. We develop the ability to find enjoyment and purpose regardless of external circumstances.” “Painters must want to paint above all else. If the artist in front of the canvas begins to wonder how much they will sell it for, or what the critics will think of it, they won't be able to pursue original avenues. Creative achievements depend on single-minded immersion.” “Wealth, status, and power have become most cultures’ all too powerful symbols of happiness. ... And most people assume that if only they could acquire some of those same symbols, they would be much happier.”

! !

“How we feel about ourselves, the joy we get from living, ultimately depends directly on how our minds filter and interpret everyday experiences. Whether we are happy depends on inner harmony, not on the controls we are able to exert over the great forces of the universe. Certainly we should keep on learning how to master the external environment, because our physical survival may depend on it. But such mastery is not going to add one jot to how good we as

individuals feel, or reduce the chaos of the world as we experience it. To do that we must learn to achieve mastery over consciousness itself.” “It is by being fully involved with every detail of our lives, whether good or bad, that we find happiness, not by trying to look for it directly.”

Chapter 32 Mildred Newman!

!

Mildred Newman, a New York psychologist wrote vastly popular books which helped meet an American yearning for emotional self-help and self-betterment in the 1970’s.

!

She and her husband, Dr. Bernard Berkowitz, a psychologist and psychiatrist, wrote ''How to Be Your Own Best Friend''. A slender volume of practical advice simply expressed, it sold in the millions.

! !

The couple followed up this success with ‘'How to Be Awake and Alive” and ‘"How to Take Charge of Your Life”.

!

A native New Yorker, Ms Newman graduated in 1940 from Hunter College, where she received a master's degree in psychology in 1943. She completed an analytic training program at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis in Manhattan before going into practice.

!

“We feel that our books should be an emotional experience,'' Ms Newman wrote, when “How to Take Charge of Your Life” first appeared, “That they can be picked up at different times in our reader's lives, and that they will be both energising and comforting in times of crisis.”

! ! !

~

!

Mildred's abundant paradigm of a world where one person’s rise is celebrated and does not mean another person’s fall is pertinent and true to life. Her focus on creating the lives we want is summarised by a concept that I love which I refer to as “Pro-vision”; focusing on what we want and where we want to go rather than what we don’t want and where we don’t want to go! So often so many people are focussed on what they don’t want it’s as of they live their lives in “anti-vision” and aversion.

!

Mildred’s powerful question: “If I only have one life to live, shouldn't it be the one I want?” is a great question and one that deserves reflection and action. “Gain Without Pain” strongly advocates acknowledging, celebrating and validating our passions and inclinations and achievements recognising that that is what most high achieving professionals do. So often “losers” put themselves down for past failures and defeats rather than focussing on the multiple success’, “wins” and day to day miracles that occur many times - only recognising them as such when they are missing or taken away.

! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

! !

!

"When we become more, it doesn't make anyone less. There is room for many marvellous people in the world and many wonderful achievements. When we really grasp this, we take pleasure and exalt in what fellows are able to do. We in no way feel diminished. We feel expanded and exhilarated. And we are able to do our own thing without feeling anxious or guilty towards anyone.” “When we stop trying to get from other people what they can’t give to us, we can begin to enjoy what they can offer.” “To take responsibility for our lives means making a profound change in the way we approach everything. Most people do everything they can to avoid this change, this responsibility. They would much rather blame someone or something for making them feel unhappy than take the steps to make themselves feel better.” "People feel very justified in their anger and they may be right... but what they don't see is that they are now cheating themselves as adults. As long as they spend their energies being angry at the people who deprived them once, they won't spend their effort on getting for themselves what they need now” “We are free when we accept the responsibility for our choices.” “Part of the person is pushing ourselves down, but another part is crying out that that's not where we belong. It's a question of having some compassion for ourselves". To rightly love fellows, we must have some sense of respect and affection for ourselves.” “Why don't we think and focus on the times we were wise and kind? Why do most people prefer to remember and dwell on defeats instead of victories?”

Chapter 33 Napoleon Hill! Napoleon Hill (October 26, 1883 – November 8, 1970) was an American author who was one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personalsuccess literature. Napoleon is widely considered to be one of the great writers on success. His most famous work, “Think and Grow Rich” (1937), is one of the best-selling books of all time and at the time of Napoleon’s death in 1970, “Think and Grow Rich” had sold over 20 million copies. www.naphill.org

!

Napoleon’s works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. Napoleon became an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1936.

!

"What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" is one of Napoleon’s hallmark expressions. How achievement actually occurs, and a formula for it that puts success in reach of the average person, were the focal points of Napoleon’s books.

! ! ! !

~

Napoleon’s 17 strategies for wealth; definiteness of purpose, the mastermind, applied faith, going the extra mile, a pleasing personality, personal initiative, a positive mental attitude, enthusiasm, concentration, discipline, accurate thinking, learning from adversity and defeat, cooperation, creative visioning, maintaining sound health, budgeting time and money and the law of cosmic habit force - are strategies so fundamental to success in life that I have made it a point to recite them daily.

!

If something is not working in my life I invariably resort to checking this list to identify which of the 17 strategies is missing.

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

“We are the masters of our destiny. We can influence, direct and control our own environment. We can make our lives what we want them to be. The starting point of all achievement is desire. We keep this constantly in mind. Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything. When our desires are strong enough, we will appear to possess superhuman powers to achieve. Whatever our minds can conceive and believe, they can achieve.” “Thoughts are things," and powerful things at that, when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire.” “No one can make us jealous, angry, vengeful, or greedy; unless we let them.” “We can start right where we stand and apply the habit of going the extra mile by rendering more service and better service than we are now being paid for.” “We cherish our vision and our dreams as they are the children of our souls, the blueprints of our ultimate achievements. We set our minds on a definite goal and observe how quickly the world stands aside to let us pass.” “All the breaks we need in lives wait within our imaginations. Imagination is the workshop of our minds, capable of turning mind energy into accomplishment and wealth at any moment.” “Genius’ are simply we people who have taken full possession of our own minds and directed them toward objectives of our own choosing, without permitting outside influences to discourage or mislead us.”

Chapter 34 Naura Hayden!

!

Naura Hayden, (born September 29, 1930 - August 10, 2013 ) was an actress who worked in entertainment. known for her roles in “The Angry Red Planet” (1959), “The Perils of P.K”. (1986) and “Alaska Passage.”

! ! ! !

! !

www.naphill.org

Naura has also authored a number of books, such as “Everything You've Always Wanted To Know About Energy, But Were Too Weak To Ask” and her best-seller, “How to Satisfy a Woman Every Time” which had sold over a half a million copies by 1992.

~

!

One point of dissimilarity between Naura’s message and my own is her stringent insistence on the monogamy principle.

!

That aside, Naura explains what turns women off, what turns them on, and gives explicit, foolproof instructions any man can follow on how to give our partners earthshattering orgasms during intercourse every time.

!

Naura discusses the importance of good health and it’s sexually energising benefits and she offers practical, no-nonsense secrets of giving and receiving sexual pleasure.

!

This book is a revelation: it carries a giant message about being gentle with our partners - and most importantly it really works!

!

It is equally relevant for women to read this book as well as men - so that everyone can ask for and express their God given right for exciting, uplifting and enjoyable sex lives.

!

In the interests of gender equality and if men want to go deeper into enjoying and expressing our sexuality more effectively “The Multi-Orgasmic Man: Sexual Secrets Every Man Should Know” by Mantak Chia - is highly recommend.

“And up to now how was a man to learn about how to pleasure a woman? They sure don't teach it in school. They teach how to read and write and add and subtract and spell. You learn the capitals of every state and where Afghanistan is located, but you sure don't learn how to make love. And as I see it, making love is a lot more important than knowing how to conjugate a verb or phrase a sentence.” “Naura needed to write a book on this very important subject. There’s a need for information that is truly staggering, because this need for satisfying a woman has never been explained. A woman doesn’t learn anything in school about making love.” “The point is we can’t do anything about the past—it’s all over with and we can’t recapture all those missed ecstasies — so let’s start with NOW.” “Now I believe only a woman can explain the intricacies of satisfying a woman because a man can’t possibly know this without female input.” “The vast majority of men are definitely inept lovers, but it’s not their fault. You can’t blame them. How are they to know any better? And if women were any smarter on the subject, they’d teach the men. But they aren’t, so the men keep groping and the women keep faking.” “Another major reason for the gross ignorance about sex is that almost all romantic novels dealing with scenes of explicit sex are written by men.” “We are loveable people who deserve everything we desire. And every single day we feel more and more loved, and more and more loveable, this automatically makes us more loving people. Feeling loved makes us realise the goodness within ourselves, and that goodness is our real selves. Feeling loved makes us feel our oneness with the universe.”

* hiv/aids is consciously typed in small letters to counteract the hype and hysteria which the ‘hiv alarmists’ hope to promote.

! !

Neville's book subtitled “How a Virus That Never Was Deceived the World” is possibly the most controversial of all the resources in “Gain Without Pain”. I have included it because I think it is essential in helping the world transcend the erroneous evil message that hiv causes aids.

!

In 1984 an American biomedical researcher; Robert Gallo discovered the human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) as the infectious agent responsible for acquired immune deficiency syndrome aids. He has since been a major contributor to supporting his 'so called' hiv research, actually deception.

!

Gallo's invention, masquerading as scientific research, would like anyone who indulges in sex out of the confines of matrimony to believe that somewhere in their lives they have totally "blown it!” It has created stigmatisation and hysteria around sex, with an aim of scaring people into repression. hiv cause aids is far more than a medical deception; hiv is a socio-political imposition.

!

Neville saw the need for a rethink on aids after reporting for the Sunday Times of London for over a decade. One of his main sources of research was Peter Duesberg who challenged Gallo in his brilliant book "Inventing The aids Virus" which documents what is one of the greatest science scandals ever.

!

aids* is the first political disease to attempt to modify human behaviour with the hypnosis and threat of a deadly consequence. the erroneous hiv is the cause of aids paradigm has caused more heartache and suffering than any other medical mistake and is based on a false paradigm of what actually causes aids.

!

An hiv positive result from a bogus unvalidated test and all the suffering it can cause does not signify infection with a fatal virus and it leads me to categorically state that it is high time everyone take a stand to "STOP the hiv LIE!"

!

As Kary B. Mullis a Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 1993 writes; “We have not been able to discover any good reasons why most of the people on earth believe that aids is a disease caused by a virus called hiv. There is simply no scientific evidence demonstrating that this is true.”

We have also not been able to discover why doctors prescribe a toxic drug called AZT (Zidovudine) to people. In fact, we cannot understand why humans would take that drug for any reason whatsoever.

!

We cannot understand how all this madness came about, and though we know that to err is human, the hiv/aids hypothesis is one hell of a mistake. I say this rather strongly as a warning.

! ! !

Neville and Peter are courageous examples of humans who are willing to stand up for what they believe in and the following quotations are relevant to this important subject.

! !

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world:indeed,it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

!

“All great truths begin as blasphemies.”

George Bernard Shaw

“I have the nerve to walk my own way, however hard, in my search for reality, rather than climb upon the rattling wagon of illusions.” Zora Neale Hurston

!

“Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A kind of collective insanity over hiv* and aids* has gripped leaders of the scientific and medical professions. They have stopped behaving as scientists, and instead are working as propagandists, trying desperately to keep alive a failed theory." “One sign of a failing paradigm is an increasing complexity in the arguments used to support it and, in the case of a medical hypothesis, increasing complexity in proposed treatment regimens.” “hiv-positivity does not signify infection with an inevitably fatal virus, as so many have been led to believe. Powerful evidence has accumulated that the hiv test does not signify infection with a virus at all, harmless or otherwise. It should definitely no longer be used.” “I have no words to express my anger at what has happened. I know that if many, many promising leads apparent at that time had been explored, we might well have developed effective treatments.' The tragedy was a result of the total concentration of research funds on hiv and the 'criminal' suppression of other research possibilities. 'The aids research establishment are responsible for this tragedy. The marketing of hiv, through press releases and statements, as a killer virus causing aids without the need for any other factors, has so distorted research and treatment that it may have caused thousands of people to suffer and die.” “Your newspaper has reported the opposition to the orthodox view that hiv causes aids. There must eventually come a time when this lethal paradigm which has caused untold misery and untimely destruction of lives is demolished.” “Numerous interests - commercial, financial, political and even religious - are served by the idea that an epidemic of a new sexually transmitted disease is ripping through Africa. It distracts attention from rising death rates caused by economic exploitation and decline following periods of unsustainable population growth. It keeps the aids industry alive in the wake of the collapse of its predictions of an epidemic in Europe. It provides a marketplace for test kits, condoms and vaccine trials, a breeding ground for charities, a field of action for researchers and a vehicle for the projection of western fears about the consequences of sexual promiscuity. It may also distract attention from illegal alcohol manufacture or drug abuse, a growing problem in some African countries.”

! ! ! ! ! !

“So often people don’t realise how illness can be a friend, giving us an opportunity to step aside for a while from life’s struggles, go deep inside, and review our life’s direction. To rest and sleep, as well as exercise and enjoy sunshine. This can be so healing, letting us obtain a more peaceful perspective.” (alas many of the worlds population cannot afford such luxuries).

Chapter 37 Osho! !

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (11 December 1931 – 19 January, 1990) also known as Osho, was an Indian mystic and spiritual teacher who had, and has a huge international following.

!

oshomevlana.blogspot.com

A professor of philosophy, Osho travelled throughout India during the 1960s as a public speaker. His outspoken criticism of politicians and the political mind, Mahatma Gandhi and institutionalised religion made him controversial.

!

He advocated a more open attitude towards sexuality, a stance which earned him the sobriquet of "sex guru" in the Indian and international press.

!

Osho’s ashram in Pune is today known as the “Osho International Meditation Resort”. Osho’s syncretic teachings emphasise the importance of meditation, awareness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humour: qualities which he viewed as suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialisation. Osho's teachings have had a notable impact on Western spirituality and their popularity has increased since his death.

! !

It is no wonder that Osho’s brilliance and forthright expression threatened so many average, conventional thinkers which can be summed up by his encapsulation of his views on most education systems;

!

“The whole educational system produces only ambitious minds. That means potential patients for the psychotherapist. It seems as if there is a conspiracy — that the whole educational system only creates people for doctors, for priests, for psychotherapists.

!

The whole system seems to be sick, sick unto death. It does not create the healthy, alive, radiant human being; it does not create the joyous, the celebrating, the festive being. It does not teach us how to make our lives a festival. Whatsoever it teaches takes most people deeper and deeper into hell. And you know it — because I am not talking about some speculative systems of thought, I am talking simply about most people’s psychology, most people’s state of being.” ~

Guy Bowden

!

Osho by his own admission wants us to be rich in every possible realm; material, psychological, spiritual and he wants us to live as rich lives as we possibly can.

!

His presentations whether on dvd, video, audio or written are absolute entertainment, presented by a remarkable genius whose dimension and depth of understanding the human condition surpass almost any other authority I can think of.

!

Any spiritual seeker who comes into contact with Osho and his works will be touched, moved and inspired by this courageous man with a massive intellect and an enlightened, compassionate view of the human condition.

! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! !

! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

! ! !

!

“What is enlightenment?’ It is becoming aware who we are. It is nothing to do with the outside world. It is nothing to do with what others have said. What others have said is irrelevant. We are there! Why go and consult the Bible and the Koran and the Gita? We can simply close our eyes and we are there in our infinite glory. We close the eyes and the doors are open. Because we are there we need not ask anybody else.” “If the infinite is not there, most people are not afraid. The infinite always looks like death. Most people have become accustomed to the finite, with boundaries clear cut, distinctions clearly made.” “At the very peak, we are alone. At the very core, the innermost being, we are alone. When we have accepted it, now love can flow like the Ganges, now there is no trouble, now we can love without any condition. Now we can love without becoming dependent, or without making anybody dependent on us. Now - love

can be a freedom. A master helps us to be aware of our total, ultimate loneliness.” “All that life needs is that we live it to its totality. If people live only partially, then they will not feel the thrill of being alive. It is like any mechanism when just a part is functioning... For example in a clock: if only the second hand is working but neither the hour hand nor the minute hand moves—only the second hand goes on moving—what purpose will it serve? There will be movement, a certain part is working, but unless the whole works and works in harmony, there cannot be a song out of it. And this is the situation: most people are living partially, a small part. So they make noise but they can’t create a song. They move their hands and legs but no dance happens. The dance, the song, the significance comes into existence immediately our whole f u n c t i o n s i n h a r m o n y, i n a c c o rd . Then we don’t ask such questions as: ‘Is there any point in living?’ we know Living itself is the point ! There is no other point… Action, any action done totally, with every fibre of our being is the point.” “And stop forcing. If this child by his own spontaneity is obedient, then it is good. This is his nature - help it to grow. And if that child is rebellious, disobedient, this is his nature - help him to grow. Let one grow to be a deep yessayer; let the other grow to be a deep no-sayer. But don't interpret, because the moment we interpret we start destroying. This is his nature to say yes, and that is his nature to say no. Both are needed. Life will be very flat and dull if there is nobody to say no. If everybody is a yes-sayer, it will be absolutely dull and stupid. The no-sayer is needed, that is the polar opposite. Obedience will be meaningless if there is nobody to rebel. Don't choose, simply feel the difference and help. And we never force ourselves on them, after all that is violent.” “Discover meditation as a lifestyle. Meditation is opening the eyes. Meditation is looking. That is why Hindus have called it darshan. Darshan means looking looking at, not thinking about. The very looking transforms. Don’t have time to meditate for 10 minutes? … Meditate for 20!”

! ! !

“It has to be a commitment from one heart to another heart. It has not even to be verbalised, because to verbalise it is to profane it. It has to be a silent commitment; eye to eye heart to heart, being to being. It has to be understood, not said. It is so ugly seeing people going to the church or the court to get married. It is so ugly, so inhuman. It simply shows they can't trust themselves, they trust the policeman more than they trust their own inner voice. It shows they can't trust their love, they trust the law.”

Chapter 38 Paul Zane Pilzer!

!

Paul Zane Pilzer (born January 17, 1954) is an American economist, New York Times best-selling author and social entrepreneur. sevruk.biz/tag/pol-zejn-pilzer

!

Paul has written nine books, has served in two U.S. Presidential administrations, is the founder of six companies, and he has been profiled on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.

! ! ! !

~

Paul Zane Pilzer is one of my 52 favourite authors because he gives hope regardless of the economic situations we face. By reading his material we will change our lives and the way we think about money and the economies of the world.

!

Paul has helped me shift previous old fashioned economics thinking (from an economic model based on scarcity) to an “alchemic model based on unlimited resources and human ingenuity!

!

Anthony Robbins interviews Paul Zane Pilzer in his powerful PowerTalk series, making economics not only understandable but relevant and invaluable in making the decisions that guide our lives.

He is the recipient of numerous international awards, amongst them the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum. “The Alchemist”, his most famous novel, has been translated into 67 languages. So far, Paulo has sold 150 million copies worldwide.

~

Paulo has written a plethora of acclaimed and world renowned books and arguably his best book is “The Alchemist”.

!

The central theme of the book is to follow our dreams and how when we do the universe comes to our assistance. The simplicity of the story presentation style helps Paulo present profound wisdom in a simple, easy to read style.

!

Mark Fisher’s “The Instant Millionaire” is another instructive story which uses the fable style to impart valuable wisdom on becoming wealthy and is also worth investing time reading.

Chapter 40 Phil Town! !

!

Phil Town was raised in Portland, Oregon. Phil graduated from high school in the 1960s. After four attempts at college, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of California, San Diego. In 1972, following a stint in the US Army as a Green Beret, Phil found himself sleeping in a tent in Flagstaff, Arizona conducting whitewater rafting trips down the Colorado River.

!

In 1980, he ran a rafting expedition for trustees of the Outward Bound Program. The trip was nearly catastrophic when the boat almost capsized in a rough section of the Colorado River. One of the men on that trip told Phil that he could be “doing better than pumping rubber all summer and living on welfare in the off season.” The man was an experienced investor and offered to mentor Phil. With a credit card advance of $1,000, Phil began his career in investments and with careful application of what he was learning from his mentor he made his first million in five years. Since that time he has taught more than 500,000 people each year to do the same.

! ! ! !

~

Phil’s life story is compelling and very relatable. His concept of even if we buy one share in a company we do the due diligence as if we were buying the whole company is effective, practical and makes absolute common sense.

!

Phil’s formulae about when to buy and not to buy a company quite literally transformed many of my paradigms of what value is. Read this book, follow Phil’s formula and prosper.

“It's our money and we're the only ones who really care about what happens to it.” “We're just looking for something to invest in that gets really great returns without the risk of losing money and without spending a lot of time at it. In essence, rule #1 is just about being a good shopper. Rule #01 in a nutshell. First, we understand that rule #1 literally is "don't lose money," and what it means in practical terms is to invest with certainty. Certainty comes from this: buying a wonderful business at an attractive price. We memorise the following: ‘Knowing we will make money comes from buying a wonderful business at an attractive price.’” “We love putting our money on a great jockey, a great CEO. There's nothing better for sleeping well at night than knowing that some honest, owner-oriented, and driven person is out there thinking about how to make us money.” “The 10-10 rule: We won't own this business for ten minutes unless we’re willing to own it for ten years.” “There are opportunities to buy wonderful companies at attractive prices - they really do exist – Now we’re willing to do our homework and say good-bye to mutual funds.” “Investing is one of the most morally charged and important things we can do. As we're privileged enough to be among the few who have more money than is necessary to survive, we must be careful how we allocate that excess capital. Ultimately, it could determine how the world works for our children.” “We’re looking at stocks as businesses; we're looking for a wonderful business; and we're insisting we buy it at an attractive price.”

Richard Bandler is the co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is predicated upon the belief that all behaviour has structure. It was created to develop new ways of understanding how verbal and nonverbal communication affect the human brain. NLP helps us to not only communicate better, but also learn how to gain control over the automatic functions of our neurology.

!

Richard has authored and co-authored many books on NLP and its applications, including “Using Your Brain For a Change”, “Time For a Change”, and “Persuasion Engineering”, co-authored with John La Valle.

!

Richard continually develops new human change technologies and conducts workshops and training seminars internationally for NLP. These workshops and seminars include “Neuro-Hypnotic Re-patterning”™, “Design Human Engineering”™, “Persuasion Engineering” ®, “Personal Enhancement”™, “Charisma Enhancement”™, and “Hypnosis”, to name a few.

!

In July 1993 I was "wowed" by Tony Robbin's "Unleash The Power Within" seminar which was held in Birmingham, England. It was the first time Tony had visited the UK and it was a resounding success.

!

Throughout the seminar Tony mentioned Richard as one of his most influential teachers and my natural action after UPW was to seek out and attend Richard's “Personal Enhancement” workshop.

Richard's brilliance and genius continue to inspire and motivate me to this day. Richard's "Personal Enhancement Series" is one of the most effective self development tools available in the world today.

Ron is one of the world’s leading exponents on the subject of ‘thinking and non-thinking’ and has employed his skills and knowledge in this area to help people use the power of our brains more effectively to solve challenging business problems and personal issues. The highly effective technique requires us to ‘stop thinking’ and to let the power of the sub-conscious and the creative right hand side of the brain take over, solving problems from within.

Ron’s audio presentation of “Talk and Grow Rich” is unique, somehow outrageous and oozes Ron’s personality and passion for his subject.

“It is of paramount importance that we completely clear our mind of any preconceived ideas we may have of the ways and means people become rich and achieve success.” “The secret lies in meditation' in silence, stillness and solitude. We shall call this S.S.S. We must take time out. We must empty our minds. It is no good trying to think ourselves out of our problems and sort them out consciously. Most of us have been doing that for years, and where has it got us? However hard we try consciously, it will never work out the way we want. The secret of meditation is to hand over our problems to the subconscious mind, which is the master mind, the largest mind, the most powerful mind, the creative mind.” “The internal dialogue is the incessant chatter that goes on involuntarily within our minds. Eurekas are success ideas that come from the subconscious mind. We stop the internal dialogue so we can hear the Eurekas!” “The subconscious mind will give us many small promptings to enable us to attain our goals. Some of these promptings may seem illogical, but nevertheless we carry them out to the letter. Only when we have achieved our goal will we be able to trace our steps back and see how right the subconscious was.” “If both partners agree to give 90 percent and accept 10 percent, we will have discovered a way to run a successful, profitable partnership.” “Now we grasp the fact that problems have solutions. We read and study as much as we can pertaining to any problem. Then give the subconscious mind time to compute a solution for us.” “Now we use spiritual belief and psychological belief together we'll be invincible.”

Chapter 45 Sondra Ray!

Sondra Ray is known the world over as one of the most dynamic spiritual leaders of our day. She is recognised by many as a spiritual teacher, author, rebirther, lecturer, and healer, with a renowned expertise in the area of relationships. Inspired by President Kennedy in the early 1960's, Sondra Ray was a pioneer in the first 10 groups of the Peace Corp, an experience which gave her the lifelong dedication to world service.

!

www.liberationbreathing.com

Sondra has written 18 books on the subjects of rebir thing, relationships, ideal bir th, “The Forgiveness Diet”, “A Course in Miracles”, healing and holiness, and the many mental and spiritual imperatives in life….and many other deeply pertinent subjects in our quest to Lovingly integrate ourselves in these modern times. In her best seller, “The Only Diet There Is”, Sondra shows people how to lose weight by forgiving people, especially ourselves.

! ! !

~

Sex is an emotive word that touches sensitive buttons in most humans where most societies promote guilt over sex as a form of control. This is near-universal, although far from universally acknowledged. Sondra's powerful, simple, effective and compassionate presentation of the power of affirmations to heal any sexual issue is outstanding. Her "matter of fact" presentation make her logic easy to follow. Affirmations when done routinely and for sufficient time are extremely healing and really work.

Now we are ready to handle this much power our realities can change quickly.” “Safety means giving up anger. With certainty, it means knowing we are one with God, which is the truth and then we are connected with the source. When we are connected with God, it is easy to manifest things.” “The truth is that we are the Source, and part of the Source. In other words, we and the Source are inseparable. All our relationships are up to us; we can have them however we want them because God the Source pours energy into our thoughts and desires.” “The power to get what we want is within us, and we can release it through the simple affirmations technique set forth in this dynamic book. Affirmations are positive thoughts that we choose to immerse in your consciousness - through repetitive writing and stating - to produce a desired result. In this way, we erase negative ideas that are the basis of all personal and sexual problems and establish positive thought patterns.”

Chapter 46 Stephen R. Covey!

Stephen Richards Covey (October 24, 1932 – July 16, 2012) was an American educator, author, businessman, and keynote speaker.

!

! ! ! !

Stephen’s most popular book was “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”. His other books include “First Things First”, “Principle Centred Leadership”, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families”, “The 8th Habit”, and “The Leader In Me — How Schools and Parents Around the World Are Inspiring Greatness”, “One Child at a Time.” He was a professor at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University at the time of his death.

~

When I first read "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" I found it difficult to follow. All that changed when I listened to Stephen presenting the material on audio tape. I was “wowed" and went on to study the book avidly as over 15 million fellows have.

!

I went on to buy the six tape presentation of the “7 Habits” and I have lost count of the number of times I have listened to it. One of the many highlights of my personal development discovery journey was to meet Stephen in Nairobi, Kenya where he presented his "8th Habit" seminar.

!

My friend Anne Ngethe arranged that I meet Stephen and in his presence I understood the meaning of the quote "Who we are speaks so loudly nobody can hear a word we say". His empowering compassionate presence and brilliance radiated from the great man. Stephen passed away after a bicycle accident in 2012.

!

“Gain Without Pain”, growing smartly, learning from the best prescribes that great teaching leads to great learning. I always asked myself "if there was one word to describe each of the habits" what would it be? I was happy when I found on the bookshelves that somebody had done the work for me choosing the words; choice, vision, purpose, abundance, trust, synergy, renewal and voice.

We then organise our activities around our big rocks which maximises and optimises the use of our time and energy as we organise and execute around our self chosen priorities). “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least” “Dependent people need fellows to get what they want. Independent people can get what they want through their own effort. “Interdependent” people combine our own efforts with the efforts of fellows to achieve our greatest success’.” “Real change comes from the inside out. All things are created twice. First there’s a mental creation, and second, a physical manifestation follows.” “For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil there is one striking at the root” “Synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

! Chapter 47 Stuart Wilde! Stuart Wilde was considered by many to be the greatest living metaphysician in the world before his passing in 2013.

!

www.healyourlife.com

Many of the most famous New Age, New Thought writers and teachers, have privately studied with him and we have been greatly influenced by his work.

!

In the 1980s, Stuart correctly described the etheric life-field around humans in precise detail. Previously, it was known only in vague terms in discussions about the human aura. Stuart wrote out the first of many precise and verifiable etheric exercises and sensations in his book “The Quickening”.

!

Stuart wrote over twenty books, which have sold in the millions, and which were translated into fifteen languages.

! ! ! !

~

!

In October 1992 with nothing better to do I picked up Stuart’s “Life Was Never Meant to Be a Struggle” with an attitude that I would read a few pages to confirm that the idiot in the hammock was as inane as the title of his book. I was in for a shock! I read the small book cover to cover and saw that Stuart was by no means an “idiot.” In fact Stuart was a profound mentor a gifted teacher and an absolute genius. Stuart went on to transform my life with his wisdom.

!

At the back of “Life Was Never Meant to Be a Struggle” Stuart offered three courses; “Warriors Wisdom”, “Warriors in the Mist” and “Easy Money” and having read his book I signed up for all three immediately.

!

In Stuart’s promotion material he promised that the “Warriors Wisdom” would be “four of the most fun days of our lives” and I am happy to say that this chivalrous, noble, honourable, magnificent teacher delivered all he promised. I could not have chosen a better first self help and personal development mentor and everyday I am profoundly grateful to this great man.

!

At the beginning of Stuart’s “Warriors Wisdom” workshop in Colorado in July,1993, he read these profoundly wise words from the “Warrior’s Creed”;

I have no armour: I make benevolence and righteousness my armour.

!

I have no sword: I make absence of mind my sword.

! !

To a large extent Stuart lived these words and expected his students, which he referred to fondly as “Tolemacs” to do so as well.

!

Stuart taught me that we are not necessarily stuck with the people around us. And I learnt a lot from Stuart’s magnificent advice on letting people go if they are not longer compatible with us.

!

In a section entitled “Cast of Characters” in his great, best selling book “Life Was Never Meant to be a Struggle” Stuart offers this insightful wisdom and advice;

!

“At this time, the world has more than five billion inhabitants. They are the characters we will invite to be in our army of helpers. Most will not be suitable, and many others will be busy in campaigns of their own.

!

But some are eminently suitable. To go beyond struggle, first we want to be able to accept the help of fellows, and, second, we want to choose our characters carefully. If we find ourselves in a campaign with the cast already set, we must become crafty generals. We must get the most out of our people—given the circumstances, the goals, and what the budget allows.

!

It’s a mathematical certainty that we’ll eventually eliminate most of the people who come into our lives. We tend to think that the characters we have around us are the only characters. Not so. I used to think that if I didn’t get along with the kids in the neighbourhood, I would have no friends. So I adapted to what I felt they wanted of me. Truth is that there are billions of kids all over the place - but coming from my finite view as a small boy, I didn’t see that.

!

Never be afraid to let people go if they're not right; often that’s the only way we can make room for the right person. Also, we’re doing them a service. If they're square pegs in round holes, they need our help to move on to a more comfortable setting.”

It is best to avoid people and situations that we know drive us crazy. We remember to vote with our feet. If a situation is untenable or unchangeable, we walk away.” “The person who said money is the root of all evil just flat out didn’t have any.” “Our life's journey of self-discovery is not a straight-line rise from one level of consciousness to another. Instead, it is a series of steep climbs and flat plateaus, then further climbs. Even though we all approach the journey from different directions, certain of the journey's characteristics are common to all of us.” "If we don't change, reality in the end forces that change upon us.” “Poverty is restriction and as such it is the greatest injustice we can perpetrate on ourselves.” “The trick to money is having some. Chapter 48 T Harv Eker!

T. Harv Eker is an author, businessman and motivational speaker known for his theories on wealth and motivation. He is the author of the Bestselling book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” published by HarperCollins. Harv was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada and lived there through his childhood. As a young adult, Harv moved to the United States and started a series of over a dozen different companies before having success with an early retail fitness store. After reportedly making millions through a chain of fitness stores and subsequently losing his fortune through mismanagement, Harv started analysing the relationships rich people have with our money, leading him to develop the theories he advances in his writing and speaking today.

! ! !

~

I am proud to say that I attended the first “Millionaire Mind Intensive” held in Asia in Singapore in November, 2008. At that seminar, attended by over 6,000 people, we were impressed by Harv’s no nonsense, intense presentation style.

!

Learning is supposed to be fun and when the information presented is relevant it is always effective! During that seminar Harv was assisted by Rob Riopel who complimented Harvs’ intensity with his own light hearted and humour filled presentation style.

!

Harv has created a seminar that I hope will become an integral part of every school curriculum. Harv also teaches further courses entitled “Quantum Leap” which are experiential, interactive and very valuable. My favourite course of his is “Enlightened Warrior Camp”.

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

!

“People can have all the knowledge and skills in the world, but if their “blueprint” isn’t set for success, they’re financially doomed… If we want to change the fruits, we will first have to change the roots. If we want to change the visible, we must first change the invisible.” “Now we want to make a permanent change, we stop focusing on the size of any problems and start focusing on the size of ourselves ; The world doesn’t need more people playing small. It’s time to stop hiding out and start stepping out. It’s time to stop needing and start leading. It’s time to start sharing our gifts instead of hoarding them or pretending they don’t exist. It’s time we started playing the game of life in a “big” way. It’s not enough to be in right place at right time. We must be the right person in the right place at the right time.” “We know exactly what we want!” The number one reason most people don't get what they want is that they don't know what they want.” “We bless that which we want. If we see a person with a beautiful home, we bless that person and bless that home. If we see a person with a beautiful car, we bless that person and bless that car. If we see a person with a loving family, we bless that person and bless that family. If we see a person with a beautiful body, we bless that person and bless their body.” “Money will only make us more of what we already are.” “For the prosperous, it's not about getting more stuff. It's about having the freedom to make almost any decision we want.” “We love constantly learning and growing. Every master was once a disaster… we can learn to be great at anything.”

! Chapter 49 Wallace Wattles!

! Wallace Delois Wattles (1860–1911) was an American author. A New Thought writer, he remains personally somewhat obscure, but his writing has been widely quoted and remains in print in the New Thought and self-help movements.

! ! ! ! !

web-librairie.com

Wallace’s best known work is a 1910 book called “The Science of Getting Rich” in which he explained how to become wealthy and emphasised the spiritual causation of riches. “Everything is made of one hidden stuff.” ~

Wallace’s distinction between the competitive and creative mind if taken seriously would change the face of society as we know it today. School systems would change, the Olympics, the World Cup and most adversarial government systems too. Cooperation, collaboration, connection and celebration of our unique individual human talents will be the making of successful evolutionary societies during the 21st century and conversely lead to the destruction of those societies which embrace the competitive paradigm.

! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day… “The very best thing we can do for the whole world is to make the most of ourselves.” “... because all things have contributed to our advancement, we should include all things in our gratitude.” “There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. We can form things in our thought, and by impressing our thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing we think about to be created. In order to do this, we must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; we must form a clear mental picture of the things we want, and hold this picture in our thoughts with the fixed purpose to get what we want, and the unwavering faith that we do get what we want, closing our minds against all that may tend to shake our purpose, dim our vision, or quench our faith.” “It is legitimate and right to desire riches, and to want them for the sake of our souls. We can serve God and man in no more effective way than by getting rich; that is, now we get rich by the creative method and not by the competitive one.” “We do not wait for an opportunity to be all that we want to be... we can advance only by more than filling our present place... we must eliminate from our thoughts all doubt and uncertainty that we will get better; that we will succeed; that we will gain our point and get what we want. We may have some uncertainty as to methods, but we must have none as to ultimate results. We may not feel certain that we will succeed today, or next week, but we must feel certain that we will succeed sometime.” “There are three motives for which we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, we live for the soul. No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three—body, mind, or soul—can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression.” “Wisdom is dependent upon knowledge and when man can connect his mind with a knowledge greater than his own and draw from it, by inspiration that is true wisdom. Only God knows all truth; and man can receive Wisdom by being open and reading the mind of God.”

!

Wayne is affectionately called the “father of motivation” by his many fans. Despite his childhood spent in orphanages and foster homes, Wayne has overcome many obstacles to make his dreams come true. Today he spends much of his time showing fellows how to do the same.

!

When he's not traveling the globe delivering his uplifting message, Wayne is writing from his home in Maui.

I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” “When we dance, our purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.” "Prosperity in the form of wealth works exactly the same as everything else. We will see it coming into our lives when we are unattached to needing it.” "If we control our thoughts, and our feelings come from our thoughts, then we are capable of controlling our own feelings. And we control our feelings by working on the thoughts that preceded them. Simply put, most people believe that things or people make them unhappy, but this is not accurate. We make ourselves happy or unhappy because of the thoughts that we have about the people or things in our lives. Becoming a free and healthy person involves learning to think differently." "The need for approval is based on a single assumption. "Don't trust ourselves check it out with someone else first." Many cultures reinforce approval-seeking behaviour as a standard of life. Independent thinking is not only unconventional, it is the enemy of the very institutions that constitute the bulwark of most societies. We can break the connecting chain between what others think, say and do, and our own self-worth. If we encounter disapproval we can talk to ourselves. "This is her or his stuff. I expect her or him to behave that way. It has nothing to do with me." This approach will eliminate the self-hurt that we used to inflict when we connected someone else's feeling with our own thoughts.” “Self-love means accepting ourselves as a worthy people because we choose to do so. Acceptance also means an absence of complaint. Fully functioning people never complain, and particularly we do not complain about the rocks being rough, or the sky being cloudy or the ice being too cold. Acceptance means no complaining, and happiness means no complaining about the things over which we can do nothing.” “No one on their death bed ever wished they had spent an extra day at the office.”

William Walker Atkinson (December 5, 1862 – November 22, 1932) was an attorney, merchant, publisher, and author, as well as an American pioneer of the New Thought movement. He is also known to have been the author of the pseudonymous works attributed to Yogi Ramacharaka. Due in part to Atkinson's intense personal secrecy and extensive use of pseudonyms, he is now largely forgotten, despite having written more than 100 books in the last 30 years of his life. (He obtained mention in past editions of Who's Who in America, Religious Leaders of America, and several similar publications —-but these are mostly subscription based, and reflect more on his desire to be known than his contemporary fame.) His works have remained in print more or less continuously since 1900.

! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! “Life is absolutely dependent upon the act of breathing. To breathe is to live, and without breath there is no life.” “Breathing may be considered the most important of all of the functions of the body, for, indeed, all the other functions depend upon it. Humans may exist some time without eating; a shorter time without drinking; but without breathing our existence may be measured by a few minutes.” “And not only are Humans dependent upon Breath for life, but we are largely dependent upon correct habits of breathing for continued vitality and freedom from disease. An intelligent control of our breathing power will lengthen our days upon earth by giving us increased vitality and powers of resistance, and, on the other hand, unintelligent and careless breathing will tend to shorten people’s days, by decreasing their vitality and laying them open to disease.” “It should not be necessary to state to the student that the proper method of breathing is to take the breath through the nostrils, but alas! the ignorance among civilised people regarding this simple matter is astounding. We find people in all walks of life habitually breathing through their mouths, and allowing their children to follow their horrible and disgusting example.” “Many of the diseases to which civilised man is subject are undoubtedly caused by this common habit of mouth-breathing. Children permitted to breathe in this way grow up with impaired vitality and weakened constitutions.” “Many contagious diseases are contracted by the disgusting habit of mouthbreathing, and many cases of cold and catarrhal affections are also attributable to the same cause. Many persons who, for the sake of appearances, keep their mouths closed during the day, persist in mouth-breathing at night and often contract disease in this way. Carefully conducted scientific experiments have shown that soldiers and sailors who sleep with their mouths open are much more liable to contract contagious diseases than those who breathe properly through the nostrils.”

! !

“There is no royal road to the Science of Breath, and students must be prepared to practice and study in earnest if we expect to receive results. The results obtained by a complete mastery of the Science of Breath are great, and no one who has attained them would willingly go back to the old methods, and we will

! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! ! “Individuals who change in response to our illness can exceed expectations or achieve results doctors consider miraculous. When talking to these exceptional patients the words love, faith, living in the moment, forgiveness and hope come up again and again. The inner peace these people have acquired on a psychospiritual level leads to healing and often to cures as well. Illness is a challenge and a gift. We are stimulated to examine our deepest thoughts, desires and beliefs. The journey of self-discovery restructured our lives and led us into powerful experiences of the mind-body connection.” “Feelings are chemical and can kill or cure. As a doctor I believe it's my responsibility to help my patients use them to cure and heal themselves. While placebos can be useful, because as symbols of hope they activate expectations, my reputation, my training, my belief in my patients and my own hopefulness also have symbolic value, which I can use to guide my patients into health. When some of my patients get better despite the odds against them, you may say that these are people I have deceived into health. But I don't see that as a crime. I will always use all the tools at my command, because all healing is scientific. If I'm accused of offering false hope, my answer is that there is no false hope-only false no hope-because we don't know the future for an individual.” “The more we learn about mind and body as a unity, the more difficult it becomes to consider them separately. What's in our minds is often quite literally, or 'anatomically,' what is in our bodies: Peptide messenger molecules manufactured by the brain and the immune system are the link.” “By focusing on events that most people try to forget as quickly as possible, the emoters allowed themselves to express their feelings and hence gave their bodies ‘live’ messages. I also believe that the act of writing these events down allowed the emoters to rethink them. In other words, they engaged in a simple form of cognitive retraining: The events themselves remained the same but lost their destructive power."

! !

Guy Bowden

“Given what happened to you in the years leading up to your illness, what wishes do you think are being met by the illness, what benefits are you deriving from it? Freud long ago showed us the benefits of mental illnesses. The psychiatric literature is filled with case histories illustrating the erotic, selfpunitive and aggressive needs that illness can meet. The problem is that those of us in the body specialties have not been taught this and are not aware that physical diseases can meet similar needs. In looking at physical disease we tend to concentrate on the body and act as though a person and a mind do not come with it. But they cannot be separated, and in order to understand a patient’s illness we must always consider the possibility that it meets certain psychological needs that might not be met without it.” “Modern man and his medicine have lost touch with the special sense of the importance and value of sickness, and the central role that dreams play in connecting his soul to the powers beyond himself. We are indebted to Jung because he rediscovered this religious attitude not only toward the dream but toward man's ills as well. 'Man needs his difficulties,' he said, 'they are necessary for health.' Unfortunately, this attitude has not permeated medical practice and the dream is rarely heard in the current medical shrines.” “When most doctors look at their patients they are trained to see only the disease. That is why so many of us need to be reminded that there is a human being in the room with us. One woman did this by placing a sign on her sick husband' s hospital room door saying 'Danger, human being inside.' “

!

“It’s an abundant universe. We are surrounded by abundance right now; all we need to do is open our eyes and look for it. We stop waiting for money to come our way before we feel prosperous. We feel prosperous now! Do we have an abundance of friends? An abundance of good health? An abundance of ideas or clothes or time? We look for areas of our lives where we can feel abundance.” “We begin programming our minds right now for prosperity. I began my prosperity programming in deepest poverty. There is no situation in which we can’t begin prosperity programming.” “We read inspirational books, listen to self-help tapes, join groups and organisations that desire success. Everything we do becomes a part of us. This book we are reading is filled with life-changing principles that will make a tremendous impact on our lives if we apply them.” “‘Our success helps many people. Failure helps no one.’ We think about that statement before we settle for anything less than success. We realise our success is more than just personal ambition; it is our responsibility. Stop being selfish, succeed. The world needs us!” “Every person is a star. Every person is special unique and deserves respect. Every person is a star. …. The realisation that every person, no matter who they are or what their status, is special changes our attitude towards them. We now willingly grant them the respect they deserve. They may not know they are special or show it in their actions, but we know it, and treat them accordingly.” “As we change our thoughts toward people, people change towards us …. In relationships, as in everything else, we get exactly what we believe in, think of, and expect to happen. There are many possibilities in every relationship when we are willing to experiment with our thoughts. Visualisation allows us to build new thought forms and become creators in our relationships. We create and stop reacting.” “We can empower fellow people with a minimum amount of effort on our part. In doing so, we strengthen both ourselves and the fellow person. Empowering people is a special and intimate way of touching fellows’ lives.”

Bonus Chapter 56 Ralph Waldo Emerson!

!

Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet, who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

!

Ralph gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay, Nature. Following this ground-breaking work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. considered to be America's "Intellectual Declaration of Independence”.

! !

Ralph wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for humankind to realise almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Ralph’s "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul.”

!

He remains among the linchpins of the American romantic movement, and his work has greatly influenced the thinkers, writers and poets that have followed him. When asked to sum up his work, he said his central doctrine was "the infinitude of the private man.” Ralph is also well known as a mentor and friend of fellow Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau.

!

! ! !

~

Ralph was a deeply compassionate man who spoke the truth as he knew it sharing his advice on a multiplicity of subjects writing with an eloquence that often softens an often blunt message of an important subject such as his message on animal rights.

! !

“You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity.”

Both Ralph and William Ralph Inge articulate the subject of the protection of animal rights in a noble manner which will encourage us to reconsider our actions and to be more compassionate in how we treat animals.!

“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in fellows; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because we have lived. This is to have succeeded.” “The invariable mark of wisdom is when we see the miraculous in the common.” “One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical decisive hour. We write it on our hearts that every day is the best day of the year.” “Great men are we who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force and that thought rules the world.” “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” “The ancestor of every action is a thought. The revelation of thought takes us out of servitude into freedom.” “To be ourselves in a world that is constantly trying to make us someone else, is the biggest accomplishment.”

! !

~!

Robert’s fifth book “Mastery” is his best book to date. Roberts’ refreshing guide as to how we can unlock the passion within - and follow our natural inclinations makes the path to mastery look easy. His six step approach to the achievement of mastery; discover our calling, submitting to reality, absorbing the masters power, observation of social interaction, awakening of the dimensional mind and combining the intuitive with the rational - answers, in practical terms, why some of us are destined to become masters whilst others do not succeed.

! ! ! ! ! ! ! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…!

! ! ! !

!

“There are two kinds of failure. The first comes from people never trying out their ideas because they are afraid, or because they are waiting for the perfect time. This kind of failure they can never learn from, and such timidity will destroy them. The second kind comes from a bold and venturesome spirit. If we fail in this way, the hit that we take to our reputation is greatly outweighed by what we learn. Repeated failure will toughen our spirit and show us with absolute clarity how things must be done.” “We are all in search of feeling more connected to reality… and the most satisfying and powerful way to feel this connection is through creative activity. Engaged in the creative process we feel more alive than ever, because we are making something and not merely consuming, Masters of the small reality we create. In doing this work, we are in fact creating ourselves.” “The only solution for an enlightened person is to let the mind absorb itself in what it experiences, without having to form a judgment on what it all means. The mind must be able to feel doubt and uncertainty for as long as possible. As it remains in this state and probes deeply into the mysteries of the universe, ideas will come that are more dimensional and real than if we had jumped to conclusions and formed judgments early on.” “The problem is that most humans are deep conformists… those qualities that separate us are often ridiculed by others or criticised by mentors. Because of these judgments, we might see our strengths as disabilities and try to work around them in order to fit in. But anything that is peculiar to our makeup is precisely what we must pay the deepest attention to and lean on in our rise to mastery.” “The truth is that creative activity is one that involves the entire self - our emotions, our levels of energy, our characters, and our minds…. We must engrave deeply in our minds and never forget: our emotional commitment to what we are doing will be translated into our work. If people go at their work with

half a heart, it will show in the lacklustre results and in the laggard way in which they reach the end. If they are doing something primarily for money and without a real emotional commitment, it will translate into something that lacks a soul and that has no connection to them. They may not see this, but we can be sure that the public will feel it and that they will receive their work in the same lacklustre spirit it was created in. When we are excited and obsessive in the hunt, it will show in the details. When our work comes from a place deep within, its authenticity will be communicated.” “In following our inclinations and moving toward mastery, we make a great contribution to society, enriching it with discoveries and insights, and making the most of the diversity in nature and among human society.” “At our birth a seed is planted. That seed is our uniqueness. It wants to grow, transform itself, and flower to its full potential. It has a natural, assertive energy to it. Our Life's Task is to bring that seed to flower, to express our uniqueness through our work. We have a destiny to fulfil. The stronger we feel and maintain it--as a force, a voice or in whatever form-- the greater our chance of fulfilling this Life's Task and achieving mastery.”

“To be creative we have to relentlessly develop and improve ourselves and our ideas.” “We must live at the speed that suits us. We don’t force things. To be truly creative we must work at our own pace.To be successful creatively, we have to ignore pressure and work at the pace that suits us. Leonardo da Vinci took 25 years to complete The Virgin of the Rocks. Some of Picasso’s paintings only took minutes. Vermeer produced only 35 paintings in his lifetime.” “We don’t worry about our originality. It will reveal itself no matter what we or others do.” “Everything around us is constantly changing. Nothing is fixed. Nothing is forever. We successful creative people don’t work against this knowledge but work with it. Everything is in a state of flux. Boundaries between disciplines break down, values become increasingly blurred and change accelerates.” “The successful creative mind focuses totally on the task at hand.” “We who have fresh, new ideas are always learning. It is more important to learn than to know. Knowledge is different from learning. …. To learn requires we constantly explore new ideas and new media. It calls for sensitivity and awareness to our surroundings, not slavish memorisation of information. Now we learn how to learn, we have learnt enough.”

The eight stages of change can be summed up simply as; “anticipate change”, “monitor change”, “adapt to change quickly”, “implement change”, “enjoy change”, “change quickly and enjoy it again”, “look for small changes” and “accept that change continually happens”.

“What would we do if we weren't afraid?” “When we stop being afraid we feel good. When we move beyond our fears, we feel free.” “We see what we're doing wrong, laugh at it, change and do better.” “The quicker we let go of old cheese, the sooner we find new cheese.” “If we do not change, we can become extinct!” Sometimes, things change and they are never the same again. This looks like one of those times. That's life! Life moves on. And so should we.”

At 28 years old Guy read the original version of the story below in Deepak's Chopra “Creating Affluence”. Having been fascinated by the prospect of creating wealth from an early age Guy decided that he would indeed follow the “goddess of knowledge” and so began 23 year journey of self discovery growing smartly and learning from the best mentors and resources available.

! !

“Once upon a time in a far away land, Guy went to the forest and said to his spiritual master Deepak, "I want to have unlimited wealth, and with that unlimited wealth, I want to help and heal the world. will you please tell me the secret to creating affluence?” and Deepak replied, "there are two goddesses that reside in the heart of every human being. Everybody is deeply in love with these supreme beings.

!

But there is a certain secret that we need to know, and i will tell you what it is. "although we love both goddesses, we must pay more attention to one of them. she is the goddess of knowledge.”

!

“When we pay more attention to the goddess of knowledge we pursue her, and love her, the other goddess, who is the goddess of wealth will become extremely jealous and pay more attention to us. the more we seek the goddess of knowledge, the more the goddess of wealth will seek us. she will follow us wherever we go and never leave us. and the wealth we desire will be ours forever." there is power in knowledge, desire, and spirit. and this power within us is the key to creating affluence.”

!

During Guy’s journey he has sought out knowledge, firstly through books, which have been recommended or synchronistically appeared. He has, thereafter, when appropriate made the effort to go and meet many of the teachers and authors and taken the time to learn and apprentice with them.

!

During the last 23 years Guy has gone from “forcing things to happen” to “allowing them to happen naturally and miraculously appearing”

!

Though far from perfect, Guy aspires to live and breathe Deepak’s “law of least effort” as described below;

Bonus Chapter 60 Guy Bowden! ! !

! ! ! !

!

The “law of least effort” is based on the fact that nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease and abandoned carefreeness. This is the principle of “least action”, of no resistance. This is, therefore, the principle of harmony and love. When we learn this lesson from nature, we easily fulfil our desires.

!

When we observe nature at work, we will see that least effort is expended. grass doesn't try to grow, it just grows. And it is human nature to make our dreams manifest into physical form, easily and effortlessly.

!

In Vedic Science, The Age-Old Philosophy Of India, This principle is known as “the principle of economy of effort”, or "do less and accomplish more." Ultimately we come to the state where we do nothing and accomplish everything. This means that there is just a faint idea, and then the manifestation of the idea comes about effortlessly. What is commonly called a "miracle" is actually an expression of the law of least effort.

!

Nature's intelligence functions effortlessly, frictionlessly, spontaneously. It is nonlinear; it is intuitive, holistic, and nourishing. And when we are in harmony with nature, when we are established in the knowledge of our true selves, we can make use of the law of least effort.

! !

! !

! I suggest that we reflect on one quote, each day…! ! “We realise the importance of option. ‘Rejoice rejoice we always have a choice …’ It is imperative to always ‘want to’ ; never ‘have to’ or ‘need to’. Anyone who says otherwise is in a limited position of ‘no choice’ and as my grandma always told me, ‘beggars can’t be choosers.’” “Happy people make smart decisions’; so we decide henceforth to be happy as our default mode of being!” “It’s expansive …. not expensive.” “Now we learn to focus on exactly what we want ; we invariably get it. Massive action equals massive rewards. When we decide we make it a must not a maybe!” “It’s easier to say ‘no’ and then ‘yes’ ; than ‘yes’ and then ‘no’. And ‘maybe’ is always an option ! We are then ‘ the infinite choice makers in a field of all possibilities.”

!

! !

! ! !

“Do it once do it properly! which is best summed up by my friend James Nimmo’s favourite quote “...I loved it when my father got himself worked up. Listening to him during those early years, I began to realise how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. He taught me that if we are interested in something, no matter what it is, we must go at full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good. Hot is no good, either. White hot and passionate is the only thing to be". “We surround ourselves with people who are accepting nurturing nourishing and who want the best for us on our terms. We must always remember ‘Life is not a popularity contest’ ; And ‘Nobody gives us oxygen.’ I always remember Ella William’s advice “If surrounded by toxic negative people don’t walk away … Run!” Someone asked ‘what if those people are your family ?’ And Ella answered without hesitation ‘The same applies!’”
