The Benefits of Sleep

Sleep is crucial for our overall physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. How many times have you had a bad night’s sleep and then you don’t feel yourself the next day? Sleep is as important to our health as eating, drinking and breathing.

A good night’s rest allows the cells in our body to repair themselves, making our complexion fresher and brighter and helping our brain to consolidate our memories and process information that we have learned throughout the day.

Lights Out

That’s all lights – not just the conventional ones. Blue light stress refers to the way that light emitted from computers, tablets and phones can diminish sleep quality, and even wake you up.

For deeper, uninterrupted sleep, we recommend removing as many digital devices from the bedroom as you can. If you want to go for the full black out, why not try an old-fashioned lights-free alarm clock?

Eat to Sleep

It’s widely known that a heavy evening meal affects sleep quality. However, there are some foods that will help your body relax and get the best possible night’s sleep.

Magnesium rich foods in your evening meal such as dark leafy vegetables, raw nuts, seeds, pulses, seafood, avocado or dark chocolate will act on your nervous system to help switch it from active mode, to rest and digest.

Beauty Sleep

Imagine a beauty treatment that could boost your immune system, revitalize cell renewal and rejuvenate your skin, all while you relax. Then, imagine it is completely free. That is the power of sleep.

For anyone who is struggling to doze off, try the soothing oils of Lavender and Clary Sage. This will help you to make bedtime more blissful and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready to face the day.

Creating the Perfect Night’s Sleep

Avoid Worries

Have a paper and pen by your bed to empty any thoughts onto before you go to sleep.

This tip is also great to help you remember anything pressing that you need to do the next day so you’re not thinking about it when you should be trying to sleep.

Nourishment

Dehydration is a common cause of interrupted sleep, so ensure you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Sleep deprivation increases your appetite and cravings for sugar and unhealthy foods, which will then leave you feeling demotivated and exhausted.

Aim to include protein in each meal, especially breakfast, which helps to avoid cravings.

Winding Down

Try reading a book or listening to an audiobook to wind down and relax your eyes. Avoid technology for at least two hours prior to bedtime to help your brain to switch off.

Enjoy an indulgent evening routine; try a nice relaxing bath or give yourself a facial using your favourite products.

Circadian Rhythm

Set yourself a regular bedtime and wake up at a similar time each day. Harmonizing your body’s sleep-wake routine will train your body clock to avoid waking up throughout the night.

Relaxation

Yoga, Meditation and Breathing exercises are all renowned to assist with sleep.

Gratitude

As pressure and stress builds, sometimes it can be hard to see past negatives, try to end the day by focusing on a good thing that happened in your day.

Sound therapy

Please listen to our 432 Deep Healing channel, which we are happy to share with you. The frequency of 432Hz is renowned for its ability to reduce stress, enhance concentration, and induce deep relaxation.

These effects stem from neurological responses to harmonic vibrations. Music tuned to 432Hz is particularly valued in music therapy for its capacity to release emotional blockages and support the healing process.

Restorative Yoga session

This is a practice with restorative postures ideal for those times when we feel depleted of energy. Focusing less on stretching muscles and more on releasing tension and increasing circulation to key organs in the body.

As you move through your practice, work on quietening the mind.

The mind isn’t going to stop thinking but the key is how we react to our thoughts. If we focus on our thinking, our minds are like fans, blowing thoughts everywhere.

Whereas if we focus on our breathing or the body, thoughts can come and go like clouds across a sky.

You find your yoga mat on your room and use a pillow for rest.

Two

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Come into Child’s Pose with the knees wide and big toes touching. (Bolster or cushion can be used to support the front body). Begin feeling the natural movement of the breath in the body.

One Take a moment to arrive on your mat to bring your focus inward.

Four

Reclined Butterfly (Supta Badha Konasana)

Lying reclined onto your bolster bring soles of the feet together and allow the knees to fall open. (Place cushions under the knees to support).

Three

Easy side twist

Lying on your back keeping the left leg straight, bend the right leg and roll the right leg to the left side.

Use a cushion to support the right knee, take your gaze to the opposite side.

Five

Happy Baby

Remove your bolster and come to lying on your back with your knees bent towards your chest and to the sides of the body, taking hold of your feet.

Slowly come into savasana lying flat on your back (placing your bolster or cushion under your knees), palms facing up to the sky. Stay here in this posture as long as you need and when you feel it’s time to finish your practice, take three deep clearing breaths in through the nose and out through your mouth.

Six Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Close your day with gratitude Gratitude for Health

Breathe in. Breathe out, feeling your muscles soften into the surface beneath you. With each outward breath, release any tension – relaxing your face, shoulders, and arms.

Now, on your next exhale, embrace feelings of love, compassion, and empathy. Focus on your body’s core. Call to mind something for which you are grateful.

Breathe. Think of your gratitude for being healthy and for this day and the coming restful night. Feel gratitude for your health, ability to walk, travel – to do the things you love. Breathe deeply.

Fill yourself with gratitude’s glow.
