Good for Nothing - Day Brief Setting: This was a brief set at the Leeds chapter of Good For Nothing, who bring creatives together to solve briefs for charity and good causes who would be unable to afford these kinds of services. This was a 2 day brief completed in groups of creatives with different skill sets at Duke Studios. Background: “Imagine finding out that your favourite band is playing in your City. All your mates have got tickets, but you need to travel over 100 miles to get to an accessible venue. Imagine being invited to play a gig, but being forced to turn it down because you simply can’t get in to the building, let alone on get up on stage. Having a family member who is a musician, a music fan, and a wheelchair user has given me firsthand experience of this inequality. It’s shit, and it’s time to do something about it.” Brief: The brief we were set was to develop a solution that make it easier for people with disabilities to enjoy live music. This could be through improving awareness, information, ticketing or any number of other approaches. Audience: Disabled music enthusiasts, with a particular focus on wheelchair users in the live venue envrionment.

Ideas development After a morning’s discussion about the problems we could identify from the brief and some initial research, we rapidly moved on to discussing solutions. One idea that quickly rose to the top of the pile was an app that would solve venue visibility issues, particularly for wheelchair users, by making use of video feeds of the gig that would be streamed to the user’s phone. We favoured this idea as it was an accessibility tool that could also have mass appeal. If you have trouble seeing the stage, the app could enhance the gig experience for you. We explored two names for this at the early stages: Periscope and Giraffe. We took one each to rapidly develop and while Andy was working on a periscope logo I set about designing for Giraffe. The group decided that the name persicope was strongest because it perfectly described the function of the app. We also favoured the name because it didn’t have any link to disability. We wanted this tool to be inclusive in its ability to help both able-bodied and disabled users at gigs.

Final Product Branding, interface and concept video for an accessibility app with the following features: 1. Provide video feeds of the stage from the venue and from other user’s cameras 2. Overlay lyrics in real-time 3. Provide information on the venue and its accessibility After this we worked on a video which can be shown to potential developers to allow them to create the app. This video can also be sent as part of a pitch to the website attiudeiseverything.com who aim to help disabled peopled attend music events and may be interested in funding such an app.
