Name: The tools of our trade Area: Windows Concept: To bring to life the everyday tools of the designer. Required Materials: Blue and Orange vinyl to match the new graphic design seating area Aim: We want to take the objects we use throughout the three years of the course and turn each into a character in the window display. All of these objects would be interacting with each other, creating a playful scene that celebrates the fun of working in a graphic design studio and invites people to recognise as many of these objects as they can.

Visual Style: We would be looking to use simple geometric shapes which will apply well to vinyl. We plan to use two colours of vinyl to give the characters more definition, keep consistancy across all characters and simplify the application of the vinyl. Here are some examples of the geometry-based, scene led illustrations we would be looking to achieve.

Visual Style examples: This is an example of the visual style and personification of objects that we would use across the whole mural. Here are some examples of charcters we created. We developed this into a set of characters which represented all of the different tools of our trade.

Adaptation: These were the characters we handed over to Jaypee to form part of the mural. He asked for all of our separate pieces to be put into a dropbox so he could manipulate them to fit the overall aesthetic. Over the next few days, Jonny worked out a colour scheme, shifting our designs from two colours to one. We decided that white vinyl would work best with the rest of the room and that we should distribute the characters evenly in a diagonal pattern.

Final product: We covered all of the windows in studio 3 with our one colour characters. Johnny was pleased with how our aesthetic accompanied his mural design. Although we had to repeat characters, we were careful to distribute them evenly over the 3 main windows and two thinner windows at the back of the studio. The vinyl applied well without bubbles due the use of proper transfer tape and gave us another oppertunity to gain experience working with vinyl.
