The Brief / background : Having learnt the basics of locking up, case layout and using the proofing press, produce a range of letter press posters which promote the studio you wish to set up next year. Try to think of ways in which you can use the shape of the type to make the poster more interesting. Experiment on different stocks and come up with a way of selling the finished product. You should also consider using both woodblock and lead type. This poster should demonstrate the letterpress skills you have learnt throughout your placement at The Print Project. Concept / Proposition To create a letter press poster using one of the quotes taken from the studio manifesto I have created in collaboration with Martin. I will experiment with stock and ink and try to promote/sell the posters on our website. Deliverables: Range of Letter press posters

Development The poster went through 3 stages, all of which had to be locked into place once again. The first attempt used a grotesque outline type which didn’t work well with the other filled type on the page. I tired to move the type down another layer on the second poster but again this distracted from the larger type and created a poster which had a lot of white space. The third and final poster used two Futura letter v’s and some borders to create an image which looks like it is expanding.

Final posters / photoshoot These are the finished poster I created using the wood block and lead type on to some colourful stock. It was good to experiment with the different colour stock I had and how the ink changed depending on the stock it was printed onto. I often had to add white ink to the bright colours such as yellow so that it was not effected by the bright pink or blue stock beneath it.

Website To sell the posters I created a sticker for the Hungry Sandwich website which linked through to a checkthis page featuring drop down menus showing what posters are available and how many of them are left. Because I had some extra stickers left over from the Open Garage brief I decorated the poster tubes that were sent off to those buying a Super Size print.
