Type Case Labels

Typecase without labels This brief was to produce labels for the typecases which hold the movable type at the Print Project, Shipley. The labels had to be made using the wood block type from inside that specific typecase. Each label should also showcase the letter 'A' as this makes it quick and easy to identify the different typefaces. The letter 'A' is often on its side to make sure the full character can be seen therefore making the typeface easier to identify.

Example of label If two typefaces were kept in the same type case the label needed to include an example of the type and the size of type.

Type Case Labels

Example of set type During this brief I have learnt the basics of setting type. I have also began to use furniture and lead spacing to lock the type in place. Locking the type in place has meant that the type slips less when inking and printing

Type Case Labels

Applying stickers to case The labels were cut to the height of the case and applied using double sided tape. The typeface from within the case can be easily identified by the label on the outside. If you are familiar with the typefaces you can easily find the type you are looking for by looking at the horizontal letter As.

Type Case Labels

Example of set type Progress after week 2. Some of the typecases containes the same font so I decided to create a label that could be applied across all three as shown above. This brief has been a really good introduction to setting movable type. The brief has allowed me to learn the basic of letter press printing and I am looking forward to completing the rest of the typecase labels during my placement once a week at the Print Project.
