World Book Night at Waterstones Setting: This was a brief set at the Leeds chapter of Good For Nothing, who bring creatives together to solve briefs for charity and good causes who would be unable to afford these kinds of services. This was a 2 day brief completed in groups of creatives with different skill sets at Duke Studios. Background: World Book Night is an annual celebration of reading and books which takes place on 23 April. It sees passionate volunteers give hundreds of thousands of books away in their communities to share their love of reading with people who, for whatever reason, don’t read for pleasure or own books. Brief: Design three banners to be displayed in the window of the Leeds city centre branch of Waterstones on the night of the event. Measurements - 2x 60”x20” 1x 60”x40”. These banners should follow a night time theme Concept: To create an illustrated night forest scene that would span across the 3 large banners.

Development A night/moon theme was suggested and I quickly developed the idea of using the owl - a symbol of wisdom, a nocturnal creature and an icon that represents leeds. We had a huge area to cover across 3 posters and so we decided to expand the theme to depict a night forest. This would require a darker colour palette than I normally use, and a combination of animals and environment to make a belivable scene. The animals we used were picked to resemble those often seen in our own country. We had a very short deadline so decided to split the tasks between us, Martin worked on the background design and I worked on the animals which would fill the map. I was working in a geometric style and Martin was able to make good use fo dropbox to ensure that he sent me over the most up to date files. This page shows 3 of the 16 animal designed for the Waterstones banners.

Final Product We tried to make the 3 banners slightly different by making the left banner concentrate on a campfire, and the right hand side banner concentrate on a waterfall scene. The posters were dispalyed in time for World book night - 2 outside and 1 inside the shop. Although the brief wasn’t what we expected, we were happy with our design and enjoyed working in a different format and scale. The brief also allowed us to have our work associated with Waterstones and allowed us to add another window display to our bread and butter portfolio.
