TAMWORTH 2013
2013 kicked off with our almost ‘regular’ spot at the Illawarra Folk Festival. It was originally based at Jamberoo & was always my ‘home’ festival and so it’s always nice to a part of this festival. I must admit we weren’t expecting the heat of summer to travel so far east! We started our friday afternoon performance on stage at a temperature that was close to 46 degrees, which was rather a shock to the sytem! Half way through the set however Nth Tam Bowlo with Chris we suddenly had a huge windstorm through the area which did cool it down a little, but also nearly blew all the infrastructure away! Thanks go to Quentin who jumped in with us on Bass when he could. Then of course it was straight off to Charley Boyter & Bruce O’Hara Tamworth, which was a little kinder with it’s daily thunderstorms to disperse the heat, but as usual unforgiving in it’s workload! Thanks once again to Bruce and Pam O’Hara for some beds on our first few nights in Tamworth (you guys should open an Strange Country Band ‘official’ B&B and finally get paid for all the lovely hosting you do!). Our shows in the Bowling club picked up a few more punters ever so slowly and numbers increased a little each day which was very with Neil good to see as it’s hard to pick up a crowd George & Dan at Tamworth where there is so much going on. With No sponsorship this year it wasn’t as financially successful for us but we covered our costs with a little to spare. We will continue to run these shows next year in the hope we can get the numbers

Well,.. It’s up!,.. (well, technically it’s been up online for a while),.. but it is still a milestone as it’s my first new website in what must be nearly 20 years! Firstly I want to again Thank my gorgeous girlfriend Raina who created my original website back in the 90’s! This one is not nearly as nice looking, but will supposedly allow me to do the changes on it myself rather than be at the mercy of others, or pay each time!. It’s fairly basic & took an exhorbitant amount of time to get to where it is now - and still needs a blog, a shop on it, more photos and the rest! but after two years, I’m simply just thankful that at least it’s finally up. I will have to pay someone else to do the rest of it & then slowly learn how to put newsletters etc up when I can. Please have a look when you get a chance! & if you’ve not bought any of my CDs, please know you can now hear full versions of every song from every album,.. so go have a peak,.. & ENJOY!!!

AWARDS Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), the global leader in music rights management, honored its Country Songwriter, Song and Publisher of the Year at the 60th annual BMI Country Awards. In addition, the incredible songwriting career of Tom T. Hall was celebrated by naming him a BMI Icon. The night’s powerful musical tribute to Tom T. Hall featured many well known artists who performed his songs. As a recording artist, Hall had seven No. 1 singles, all selfpenned: “A Week in a Country Jail” (1969–70), “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died” (1971),“(Old Dogs, Children and) Watermelon Wine” (1972– 73),” “I Love” (1973–74), “Country Is” (1974), “I Care” (1974–75), and “Faster Horses (the Cowboy and the Poet)” (1976). The Grammy winner also wrote mega hits for others, including “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” which Jeannie C. Riley took to No. 1 on country and pop charts in 1968, as well as “The Pool Shark,” a chart-topper for Dave Dudley. In total, Hall has earned a staggering 31 BMI Awards for songwriting spanning country and pop genres, and six of his songs have accumulated more than one million performances each. In 2008, he was welcomed into the Country Music Hall of Fame.“Tom T. Hall’s outstanding contributions of expertly crafted songs earned him the nickname “The Storyteller,” and as his songs have transitioned through traditional broadcasts and digital mediums, BMI has been proud to make that journey with him every step of the way, said BMI President & CEO Del Bryant.

up and prove to the management that there are festival goers who like to see quality, clean (no rudeness!), no frills bluegrass music in a quiet, comfortable, dedicated venue. Particular highlights at this venue this year was the addition of a great little coffee shop at the back of the club, Delicious! It made all the difference to be able to buy reasonably priced quality coffee and snacks during the show, just perfect for it’s Morning Tea timeslot (especially if you missed breakfast!). Thanks also to Neil who took some great photos of us, hah! it’s not easy to get good ones of me at the mo, so well done! This is where we first jammed with our new bass player, Andrew, and he did well! We’ve been looking for someone ‘permanent’ for a while, borrowing our very talented friend Bruce Packard, from ‘Coolgrass’ so many times that we probably wore out our welcome!,. Thanks go to Bruce for constantly jumping in with us, we owe you! We have also thrown our mate Quentin on bass whenever he was in town, but recognise that he much prefers to play guitar and resonator guitar. I should add that Quentin is actually back in the ‘east’ for a while, having just become a dad again to a gorgeous little daughter! He was going to be joining us permanently on dobro this coming year, but in the light of Jim’s recent accident, we are currently re-examining our options. He was going to be joining us in our Tamworth line-up but he now may not be able to be there (ah! life can be a challenge sometimes!). Thanks to our special Tamworth guests Matilda Sommers, George & Dan, Montz (on banjo), Paul Wookey, Andrew Clermont & Chris Rogers (Dobro) and the boys from Mustered Courage for being guests on our show. Big Thanks also to Bridgette Sommers and Debbie Gilroy for helping out on the Bowling club door, collecting & selling tickets. It’s so nice when I can just relax & prepare for a gig when I get there & not have to worry about administration stuff as well! Special thanks to those who came along to our first ever Country Gospel show held at the Community Centre, we certainly got a great turn out for a first time out! The Good News is that while we cannot get the venue on the dates we needed to have a gospel show there again in 2014, our new Bass player Andrew was able to ‘pull some strings’ so to speak and we are now putting on a Sunday Morning Bluegrass Gospel show on the last sunday of the festival in Centrepoint Food Court. It’s not as intimate a venue for sure, but it’s better than not doing one at all,.. so come along, shout yourself a cuppa & cake, and join us! We hope to get back into the Community Centre for 2015. Thanks to the ‘Strange Country’ Band boys - Steve, Steve, Darryl, Gerry, Rod & Michael, along with Tamworth local Mark Molynoux for backing us & singing some of their own great songs. Also to guest artists Bruce O’Hara and Dean Perrett, and to Pam O’Hara and the lovely women from the Anglican Church who organised & supplied most of the afternoon tea. Special thanks also to a couple of very sweet ladies Fay & Bernadine, who donated slices for my afternoon tea as well, it was a a very kind thing to do & totally unexpected! I think I’ve named you correctly in the photo (but it’s been so long since last Tamworth, I may have got it wrong - so please tell me!!). It’s really rare to go to a free show that supplies a free cuppa & snacks at the Tamworth Festival so it’s nice to know it was appreciated. Once again
REFLECTIONS!!!
As I approach a birthday of ‘significance’ this coming year, I’ve been reflecting a lot. On my life, the decisions I made, the challenges I faced, regrets, achievements, the person I am, the things in life that have meant the most to me,.. and even my future bucket list! All families have their challenges. Afterall we don’t ‘choose’ them as we do our friends. I have learnt the importance of working through family turmoil with love and forgiveness and how that cycle inevitably makes Me a better person! I think of my friendships, some of which I have had since I was tiny, and how important it is to work at them, to feed them Aug ‘13 - Catching up with my special schoolie friends who’ve been part of my and enjoy them grow,.. and grow,..and grow! I know that a friendship’s journey is Not always easy, but I life for nearly forty years,.. some even longer! Good friends are so important! do know that there’s nothing that can’t be overcome in a friendship simply with love and forgiveness (although sometimes it takes a little time for healing to take effect!). I have made a lot of effort to renew friendships I ‘gave up on’ because I held resentment over stupid things,.. or because they were a bit hard,.. I wish I’d done it earlier. I have been given gifts and I have learnt that no matter how hard it is sometimes, I was given those gifts to use to enrich those in my world around me, Not just myself. This one took a bit longer to learn but I am working hard at it now! I have learned that to enrich people you must connect with them, then give them something unique, and not necessarily expect a ‘return’. Sometimes just to give is enough. I like to think that this is why - that in this age where singers seem to do nothing but bombard their supporters with ‘pay me, see me, buy me’ advertising thru one-sided controlled internet media like facebook etc, that I continue to try and connect with my supporters in a more personal way. I guess I spend a lot more money on my newsletters, than they do on FB posts etc (especially the ‘paper/postal’ones!) but hey,.. I actually think it’s worth it,.. & that you’re worth it! I value that tremendously & always have, it was always a two-way relationship for me! Most of you have invested interest in me for no other reason than that you like my music. I am humbled that you would do that and believe that you actually deserve some of my time & effort in return. I’ve been singing in front of people for about 35 years, professionally for over 15 years,.. and doing this Newsletter for 12! (wow! that sounds quite scary!). As I reflect on my music career, the ups & the downs, I realise that in the end the best thing about it was YOU! All of you who are reading this (and for whom it didn’t go in the ‘spam folder’ or the ‘recycling bin’). You have made this crazy life possible and have actually honoured me with the purchase of a CD or by coming to a show. Without you all and this support I could not do this, I could never have done it. I would have struggled for a few years and then like so many others I would have disappeared off the scene altogether, back to some 9-5 ‘real’ job. From my first paid solo gig in my teens at Mount Kembla Bowling Club (thank you bryan!) with my mini minor chock full with my hired Farrington PA and my myriad of songfolders containing every old favourite folk & country song ever written!!, .. to singing in Norway on an outdoor stage overlooking the amazing mountain vista!,.. I wonder to myself, ‘how did I make that happen’? I didn’t make it happen,.. you did. It’s not that I didn’t work hard, I have worked Really hard, but without you it wouldn’t have gone anywhere. I have never ‘expected’ anyone else’s help, in fact to this day I’m still surprised when they do,.. that they would want to! I meet so many young kids in music doing only what they have to, biding time till someone else comes to do it for them. Even those that work hard for a few years seem to eventually give up because they ‘didn’t get what they were due’. Unfortunately this industry doesn’t owe us anything. The movers & shakers pick and choose ruthlessly, based on the best package they can get for nothing and sell for everything. It’s sad & fickle, but saddest of all is that the most important thing of all gets lost,..and that’s YOU. If these artists invested as much in YOU as you do in them, they would ‘get what they were due’, it’s that simple. If you listen to the high profile radio shows, go to the ‘big artist’ gigs at the festivals, buy the mainstream Magazines you will be told what the industry wants you to be told,.. you will hear the music they want to sell to you and read about the artists they want you to support. Luckily for me there’s still supporters like YOU out there. Those who walk the road less travelled, who are willing to seek out something different and understand that what is in the limelight is not always necessarily the ‘best’,.. and I truly thank you for that! My life has been,.. surprising! I have few regrets, perhaps to do some of the things I did a better way!,.. . (oh, and to have had more babies!!). My challenges have been countless, but in truth insignificant compared to what so many others have had to overcome,.. and as I look to the future, I look forward to finding other ways, as well as through my music, to use my gifts to make the world a better place. All the Best, Karen x (Continued from page 3)
it was great to be a part of Sam Smyths Bush Poetry Breakfast show. I’ve been a part of that show since it’s debut many years Runaway Dixie Band ago and I hope to continue to be Deano & Brownie Nanango - On stage Pic Nanango - all in on stage Finale! a part of this quality music and poetry show. Thanks to Andrew Clermont and the chance to sing on his Supper Club Bluegrass night, twas fun! William also made his Tamworth stage debut on banjo with his first ‘Tamworth Showcase Spot’ booking at Peter Denahy’s Bluegrass Breakfast show and got more applause than we did all week!(OK, so he’s proficient AND cute!). Thanks as always, to Dot for hanging up posters for me in the preceeding weeks to the festival. I do find that while there used to be a degree of ‘professional respect’ for artists, by artists (and their street teams), based on the numbers of posters that were ripped down & replaced, I recognise that this no longer exists as far as the ‘new breed’ of artists are concerned. I won’t be wasting money anymore with this exercise and will instead be doing gig flyers so if there’s anyone out there who would be interested in carrying some around at Tamworth and handing them out or leaving them on tables Jeff, Anita, Dean & Marty etc please contact me and I’ll send you some. February kicked off with a spot on the South Coast CM Assoc. Fundraiser show at Diggers in Wollongong, lovely venue to sing at indeed!. Thanks to Tony & all the band for backing me, it was lovely to share the stage with my friends Patricia, Ken & Mike O’dwyer. Then it was back home to get my little boy W/Jenny & James ready for Year 1 which has been another exciting journey for him. No longer the ‘baby’ of the school he’s finally getting used to school being something of a regular occurrence in his life (although not Pickin with Dean at his QLD Cattle Paradise liked that much!). Unlike the other kids however, he got to go straight back on holiday after two weeks while he joined us on the inaugral ‘Australian Bluegrass Cruise’. This was not only our first cruise appearance, but our first ever cruise, so it was really exciting! Sadly I came down with a bit of a head cold on the eve of our departure but I tried not to let it dampen my enthusiasm. We met a bunch of wonderful people and had some really lovely gigs, not to mention soak in the surroundings - which you soon forgot was a boat! reminding me instead of me of a large shopping mall, casino & resort rolled into one! It was terrific for the boys in the band to On stage, Nanango spent time with Paul Trenwith & Mike Compton too. Thanks go to John Howie, Keith and all those from Travelrite for a job well done! it was a pretty wonderful week! William especially loved ‘kids club’ and actually got quite upset after his last night there. Following arrival in Auckland we hit the road to Tauranga and Wellington to sing for some NZ audiences again. Huge Thanks to Paul & Maggie for inviting us to the Tauranga Music Festival, and for hosting & amply feeding the entire band at their home (yes, ALL of us!). Thanks also to Andrew & the Wellington crew for putting on a gig for us, and then to Mary & Paul once again for opening their home up to us. Thanks to all those who were good enough to come out on a Sunday night to share our music. Thanks to Andrew for feeding us and for putting so much into the Wellington Bluegrass Society to keep it such a happening venue. Then it was back to the Cruise ship for Bruce (to play a 2nd leg of the trip with Coolgrass), off to WA for George, back to OZ for Dan & Nigel, and for us a well earned mini-break in New Zealand to catch up with more of it’s Gospel with Virgina Coad W/ Susie Popp Band - Michel, Mike & Dan beauty. This time we spent most of our time around the Bay of Islands, it’s
beaches, the amazing Kauri forests and then on to Rotorua for a ‘Hobbiton’ experience (at the original Lord of the Rings Movie set), & some nature/wildlife as well. Of course it always ends too soon, and apart from two (yes two!) cracked windscreens, and some nightmare accomodation in Rotorua!, it was a wonderful trip. March fun included a trio spot at Terara Festival, east of Nowra. Thanks to Carol Brown who recommended us for our traditional acoustic flavour which was quite different to the program of mostly bush balladeers playing to backing tracks,.. and different we ÏWill on stage at Oberon & (below) Pat were! In fact I’m still not sure the audience knew what to make of us & & Barry Karaoke-ing, Lightning Ridge wonder if many had even seen a banjo before, let alone heard one?,.. reUs with hosts Paul & Maggie at gardless, I hope they liked it! Thanks to Owen & Thelma for putting it on, and Tauranga, NZ Carole & Brian who put us up in their beautiful home,.. & Carole for the chance to chat on her Radio show on the Sunday morning before our gospel concert spot (also to ‘Grandma’ who took William for the weekend). It was especially nice to catch up with Jim Hermel, Peter, Virginia & Lynette Coad who we haven’t seen since our WA trip a year or so ago. Thanks to Dawn & Nig & other local friends for coming along to Katoomba RSL for our show & particularly nice to catch up with Kevin & Peggy who’d come for a weekend away! Then it was a little break before heading to the National Folk Festival, where this year I was an ‘audient’ only! Yes, I actually got to sit back & enjoy it not as a performer but as a listener on the arm of my trusty hubby who was performing as a bluegrass picker. I have attended many times but never as an audience member so it was kind of strange to not have to be anywhere, lug an instrument or have a rehearsal! It was also our first camping experience in our new tent, especially fun for William who learnt that the Easter bunny did in fact deliver to tents! Will also did some dad & son busking, taking home a great amount more in his pocket than we did! May brought a visit to my favourite festival, the Collector Pumpkin Festival,.. although so many people are discovering how great it is, it is getting bigger each year,..as are the queues. I no longer get to enjoy all my faviourites, pumpkin soup, pumpkin scones, pumpkin bread, pumpkin quiche etc as the queues are so long I can’t get to the top of the line in time to buy anything and enjoy it before I have to be back on stage singing again! Special thanks to Goulburn Men’s Shed stand who let me cut the queue to get some soup!,.. and also to John & Trish who put me up snugly on a very cold autumn night! I can only imagine Pat woke up after an icy night sleeping in his truck with ice on his head! It was also an honour for Pat & I to be Awarded ‘Golden Pumpkins’ after all our years of service there,...a great honour indeed. Our next trip away was to the Cooktown Discovery festival & I certainly discovered a lot. You’d think a town with such a historical record of Reconciliation between Indigenous & white settlers NZ:- Mateki, Tallest Tree; would receive a more worthy mention in the Australian School syllabus but all I was ever taught was the Waterslide with Mum!; Giant clashes they had. The people at Cooktown’s initial interactions with Captain Cook & his crew were quite Kiwi; Mountain Vista positive and even after a misunderstanding, it was quickly resolved by ‘talking it out’ rather than fighting. I’d never heard or read of white/indiginous meetings that were harmonious before this,.. but then again I was never taught about the Indigenous Stolen Generation, nor the mass British Child Migration Schemes at school either so I guess it’s sadly just another part of Australian history the government has chosen not to educate it’s children in,.. but that’s another story. Regardless it was a great festival, particularly watching the Captain Cook landing re-enactment even though our sets were marred by the rain. Thanks to the organising committee and especially to Bronwyn for all her work getting it together & for treating us so well! Then it was back to sing at Canterbury Country Show in Sydney and as usual catch up with lots of friends including Bob Howe & band, The Harmonators & Mark Lucas & his band,.. a Fabulous night as always! Then to a new show in Yarramalong, thank you to Mandy & crew for setting up this one & also for putting us up in her home. Other shows included a minishow at Oberon Pub, a great Kurrajong Fire Brigade Fundraiser (thanks to John for the very much appreciated pizza!) & a spot at Ettamogah Pub with Pat - nice to catch up with long time supporter John Macaroni there too! Then there was a top morning at the South NZ Coast CM Association Festival (on the Sunday Gospel show), sharing the stage with Patricia, Stephanie & Tony (backed by the Raiders!). A great set,.. I loved every minute of it! I also got a chance to go back to Belrose CM club for a great spot there, thank you Geoff, Peter & the band once again! A new mini-festival for us was ‘Coolgrass’ at Coolamon. It was a great venue, great food (thanks to Phil for the amazing home cooking!), great audience & we were treated really well!,.. was also nice to catch up & share the stage with Hard Drive & Shiny Tops. Thanks Merrin & Philip for all your hard work! Then it was back South Coast CM Gigs:- Dad & to Lightning Ridge for their Radio Station Birthday Bash and a catch up with old friends from Opal FM,.. Thanks to Bevan, Ann, Barry and all the mob from Opal FM - you Tony’s Band; Mike O’dwyer do a great job! Our New favourite festival just has to be Nanango CM Muster, we had the most fabulous time! Thank you Henry & Jenny & the organising crew for the opportunity, Deano Perrett for the recommendation and to all the wonderful Queenslanders we met there, too many of you to mention names,.. we want to go back!!!. Especially lovely to catch up with Susie Popp who promotes my music so much on radio! and also to James & Jenny Parrot who I finally met after what,.. 15 years? I still remember that they were one of the first people to buy my Labour Of Love album. Great to catch up with our bush balladeer friends (who like Bluegrass alot!) Jeff Brown, Dean Perrett, Keith Jamison & Aleesha, Lindsay Waddington, Brian Letton, Graham Rodger, Ray Essery, Anita Ree, ‘Runaway Dixie’ (Jim & The Coads) and the rest! To top off a great weekend we had a sleepover at Dean & Suzanne Perrett’s little piece of heaven, taking in the beauty of QLD cattle country.
