ANE & ELISE MA DESIGN LAB

ANE BAZTARRIKA Graduated in 2012, from the University of the Basque Country in Spain with a degree in Fine Arts; her work has seen a transition from graphic design to surface pattern design for textiles. Her inspiration has always been taken from natural elements and since moving to Manchester she has introduced urban elements and transformed them into fresh and vital patterns inspired by a need to escape the city. She uses mark-making techniques, stemming from other cultures and traditions, to bring a greater connection between the designer and the materials used, like traditional Zen painting from Japan using sumi-e brushes and charcoal ink. She uses intuitively led processes to create subtle but vibrant patterns, where she explores the complex textures and shades that can be created with just a simple ink stroke. Her current practice is set on finding the boundaries of minimalism by exploring ways to get strong results with the fewer elements possible. Her style comes from the layering of these pure elements with a combination of monotone palette and splashes of colour.

ELISE ZOETMULDER She graduated (2012) from Interior architecture with a minor in products & concepts from the Willem de Kooning academy in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. As a designer, she us conceptually driven to create functional objects that arrive from an intuitive, poetic and research based design process. Her work explores the line between the object and function and how simplicity and purity of the design is key to the final outcome of that said theory. This became the key theme of my research and material enquiry over the academic year and she decided to test these parameters with the objective of entering commercial design. The research focussed on 3 main topics: spiritual design in architecture, product design and society. Throughout the entire process she worked on refining her artistic design philosophy in order to grasp the essence of her theory in a commercial field. She did this through the analysis of, interdisciplinary subjects, nature/stones, material exploration, experiences and atmospheres.
