Lyubko DERESH (1984)
L
yubomyr Deresh was born in 1984 in Lviv. In 2001 graduated Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum with specialty «Chemistry and Biology». After graduating the Lyceum, at the age of 16, he debuted with his novel «The Cult», which attracted public attention and won the reader’s attention of several generations of readers (the book is being republished until now). The novel won a number of laudatory reviews in the press and has been translated into several European languages (German, French, Italian and Polish). In 2006 Lyubko graduated from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv with the specialty «Accounting and Auditing», received a degree in Economics. While studying at the University Deresh has published three more books – novels «The Ad-

oration of the Lizard» (2002), «Arche» (2004), «Intention!» (2006) and «A Little Bit of Darkness» (2007), at the same time he was holding the meetings of readers and participating in literary festivals in Ukraine and abroad. The novel «The Adoration of the Lizard» won the second place in the competition «Book of the Year» conducted by the magazine «Knyzhnyk-Review» in 2003. The novel «Arche» won the third place in the competition «Book of the Year» conducted by the magazine «Correspondent» in 2006. The novels «Intention!» and «A Little Bit of Darkness» were among the top five books in the contest «Book of the Year» BBC in 2006 and 2007, and the novel «A Little Bit of Darkness» received in this contest the third place. In 2008 a collection of essays by Lyubko Deresh together with short prose by Y. Andrukhovych and S. Zhadan «Three-Cylinder Engine of Love» was published, which won the second place in the competition «The Best Ukrainian Book» by the magazine «Correspondent». After five years of intense literary creativity, Deresh went away from writing and continued his education in private school «University of effective development» (Kyiv) and received the qualification «Organizer of psycho-technical procedures and developer of psychotechnics». In 2010 he took part in the International Innovation Forum «Creative Technologies: Ways and Prospectives for Development» in Elista (Kalmykia Republic), participated in the development of «Kalmykian Creative Project», which was carried according to the order of the President of Kalmykia K. Ilyumzhynov. Within the framework of the art festival «Gogolfest» (2010) Deresh organized a seven-day intensive workshop for young writers with famous speakers – philosophers, scientists, artists and art critics. In the course of the workshop here was first used the role play by S. Pereslegin «Knowledge reactor» for analysis and prospective evaluation of the literary process in Ukraine. In 2012, with the appearance of the book «Jacob’s Head», Deresh got back to writing prose and has ever since entirely devoted himself to literary work. Lyubko Deresh is a novelist, essayist, screenwriter, lecturer, curator, developer of innovative approaches to creativity. He is the author of three lectures-courses, which are read in cooperation with the project «LitOsvita»: «Creativity Yoga», «Writer and Death», «Culturology of the altered states of consciousness». Deresh’s creativity is permeated with the mood of search for intuitive, emotional answers to the question what is human life and a human being. They raise the subject of decay and degradation of human relations, collapse of knowledge and ethics in today’s fragmented world, search for the underlying reasons for the preservation and resurgence in the face of eternal human values. Exactly in this vein «Sinai Cycle» is written, which includes three books: a book of novels «The Peacemaker» (2013), the

novel «The Last Loveof Maharaja Asura» (2013) and the collection of short stories «The Songs of Love and Eternity» (2014). The books «The Peacemaker» and «The Last Love of Maharaja Asura» were added to the long list of the competition «Book of the Year» BBC. All three books, written during the stay abroad, touch the question of the sense of peace in today’s turbulent world – the search of the «house inside». Heroes of the «Sinai Cycle» are the generation of downshifters, people who grew up with social networks and the values of consumer society, they are set in a situation where they are no longer able to resist to external stimuli, and a person is forced to literally give birth to himself once again in order to be a personality. Essays, articles and short stories by Deresh were published in magazines «Ї», «Kafka», «Radar», «Pectoral», «Harper’s Bazaar», «Forbes» and other. In 2008, the novel «The Adoration of the Lizard» was played on the stage of The German National Theatre Weimar in Germany. In 2010, a the Moscow Open Book Festival was staged Deresh’s play «A Wall of Fog». Deresh is actively involved in cultural and intellectual processes of the country. In particular, he is working with a number of intellectual discussion clubs, such as Kyiv amateurs discussion club and «Foundation for future». Since 2013 he is a member of the jury of Ukrainian grant competition «Intellectual Capital of Ukraine». In 2014 he acted as curator of the First International Literary Festival «Ukrainian Litfest» (Donetsk, art-center «Isolation»), raising the topic of connection of language and violence in society. Since 2007 he is a member of the World League «Mind wihout drugs» and is promoting a healthy lifestyle. At the end of 2013 Deresh began a Marathon «100 books in 400 days» designed to draw attention to reading among young people.

A Curious Story of Stefan Lange Dyvna istoriya Stefana Lyange A new novel of the renowned Ukrainian writer Lybko Deresh is really very like a biographical chronicle. A strange story happened to a student of the linguistic department of Vienna University Stefan Lange that began with a lecture on which, citing the examples of anomalies of modern linguistics, Professor von Liebig mentioned the name of a certain Sebastian Shtukenhaizen. This figure intrigued the young man. And he wanted to make it a topic of his doctorate thesis. Lange undertook the research of materials zealously, but unfortunately, they were very few. He decided to look for them in Lviv, where Shtukenhaizen spent a greater part of his life. There Lange found the biography of Sebastian Shtukenhaizen, written by his childhood friend Chyzh — Vyshnevsky. Here’s what Stefan Lange Lange found out about Sebastian Mykolai Shtukenhaizen. He was born in the early twentieth century in Lemkivshchyna region, in the village of Duklia, in the family of a wealthy landowner. From childhood he impressed residents of Duklia with his stories. Father invited to him teachers from Lviv and Krakow. Sebastian-Mykolai was a generously gifted child with extraordinary memory. He loved to sing, to compose verses, to draw. Later, his father sent Sebastian and his friend and future biographer Chyzh — Vyshnevsky to imperial — royal German gymnasia for boys, where his interest in philology awoke. Beautiful and variously talented boy became a favorite of the whole team. In those years, Sebastian has experienced the first, and perhaps the only love to a young lady whose parents separated them. The gymnasia had the language direction, and Sebastian and his friend studied languages with superhuman speed. Even then Shtukenhaizen developed and advocated the theory of ancestor — language of humanity. He also wanted to know whether animals, birds, fish, plants,

and even germs have their own language. Because of unquiet situation in Europe, Sebastian’s parents moved to Zurich, and he continued his education there. Having reached the age of sixteen, in 1919, Shtukenhaizen made his separate trip to postwar Europe. In the fall of 1921 he returned to Lviv to study there. In Lviv Shtukenhaizen started his first lectures on linguistics, which had great success. His reports though were based on linguistics, but were not limited by it. Once, a very romantic adventure happened to Shtukenhaizen. A scandalously famous poetess came to listen to his lecture. After several lectures she fell in love with Sebastian. She made a declaration of love to him, was radically changed and became something of a maid by his mother. After the fifth year of study Shtukenhaizen entered a graduate school. He was often seen in Duklia, painted ‘plein air’. Before the Second World War, Shtukenhaizen as if feeling something, burned the manuscript of the book “Adam’s Apple. Reconstruction Experience. Eight meetings with the Truth” leaving only the first page with aphorisms. This work, in the opinion of the author and his biographer, had to change the course of history. So much fantastic was the death, and even more the burial Shtukenhaizen. He died from the bite of a viper in his native Duklia, and was burned by his fellow villagers on a hill near the village. After the death of Shtukenhaizen not a single copy of “Reconstruction Experience” was found, what gave rise to numerous legends. The read biography changed Stefan Lange at once. He began to work hard, although there were not enough materials on Shtukenhaizen. In the library he found three paintings depicting Sebastian. And since then Stefan felt how he changed every day a bit, a sense of gratitude to this man settled in his heart. He re-read the biography of Shtukenhaizen again and again, and it impressed him more and more. It seemed to Stefan sometimes that it was not 2013, but 1913, and he is not a student from Vienna but one of Shtukenhaizen’s friends. Stefan returned to Vienna for a short period of time, where he spoke only of his scientific work. This caused concern with his mother and dissatisfaction with his bride. Having returned to the city irritated, he plunged into Shtukenhaizen’s secrets again. And a feeling of unreality appeared with them more and more often. Trying to understand himself and to find out who exactly this Shtukenhaizen was, he went to Drohobych, where the daughter of Chyzh — Vyshensky lived. From her he learned about the hard fate of her father and about the oppressions he suffered because of Shtukenhaizen. And also the father believed that God was born in Duklia. And before his death he asserted that Shtukenhaizen himself came to accompany him to the sky. This conversation arose very controversial feelings in Stefan. And his transformations continued. The deeper he sank into everything connected with Shtukenhaizen, the more he

lost his mind. In such a state he had quarreled, and then finally broke up with his bride. He confessed in a catholic church, but could not figure out with whom he dealt: with God or with Devil. And finally, exactly at that time Stefan solved the secret of «Adam’s Apple». And by doing so, he went out of his house to get under the wheels of a car and see Shtukenhaizen, who called him to join, for the last time. Peacemaker Myrotvorec A new novel of one of the most famous contemporary Ukrainian writers Lubko Deresh is based on historical facts. In the center of the novel is the figure of Julius Robert Oppenheimer. It is an American theoretical physicist, commonly known as the supervisor of the Manhattan project, in the framework of which the development of nuclear weapons was carried out. It is the ending of the World War II. At dawn of July 16, 1945, Oppenheimer at his command post is preparing to observe the effects of the first nuclear explosion in the history of mankind. Robert feels extremely uncomfortable. The night before that he did not sleep, he was excited how his brainchild — the atomic bomb — will pass a test. This complex and ambitious project has lasted for almost two years, in which over a hundred most talented scientists have been involved. The best possible working conditions in a giant laboratory — town were created for them, there were granted almost unlimited money, the most modern equipment. The curator of the project from the side of the military was General Grows. Exactly for him and for other military commanders is Oppenheimer waiting. He still can not figure out what is his invention for the mankind: that,what will guarantee peace in the whole world, as General Grows persuaded him, or that, what will bring death and destruction. Oppenheimer — a real scientist who used to question his own thoughts, actions and deeds. However, he is a deeply spiritual man — the connoisseur of John Donne and Shakespeare, he considers it to be his weakness — the unhealthy desire to surrender to the beauty. That is this weakness, that General Grows managed to see in him. Since then, the scientist hates and at the same time fears him. Time is running out relentlessly. Soon everything will come to an end. And exactly in those last moments across the inner vision of Oppenheimer as before death, flashed all his life. Here he is a university student, mostly gifted among all — th big head of science, star of the faculty. When he was introduced to the world of big science, he knew that he was waiting for this moment all his life. When he divided the elements of the world into elements, variables and functions, he felt himself the Creator equal maybe

except to God. Then Kitty’s face appears. Evidently ugly, devoid of gorgeous shapes and spectacular appearance girl, she suddenly became for him one of the most beautiful things of this world, seemed to be the center of that universal beauty that poets praised. Oppenheimer’s memories are suddenly interrupted by General Grows. He tries to cheer the bewildered scientist up. Referring to his patriotic feelings, the General assures that Oppenheymer’s development is an investment not only in science, but also in the whole of human civilization, it is a weapon that will bring peace. But Oppenheimer does not believe his high-sounding words. After the conversation has come to an end, and the General left, Oppenheimer ordered his assistant to begin the the countdown. His is sick. To recover a little bit, he immerses in memories again. In 1936 he met the daughter of the professor of literature from Berkeley Gene Tetlok, with whom he spent three years full of passion. This explosion of feelings, which nearly killed him, pushed him to break this painful relationship. But he could not. And it was then when Kitty Harrison appeared. She was the wife of his friend. However, this did not prevent them from being together. They spent three months on his rancho. Kitty got pregnant. They got married. But Robert always felt that the world of science is much more secure than his complex relationships with women. Being married to Kitty, and having two kids, Oppenheimer did not stop to meet with Jean until her suicide. The woman killed herself entangled in their feelings. She tossed from one worldview to another, and he could not help her. Eastern philosophy helped Robert to survive the suicide of the beloved, in which he became interested in the university, namely slokas from Bhagavad Gita, which he read in Sanskrit. When there appeared news from Nazi Germany that Germans splitted atom, yet more a dozen minds turned to Einstein to support their initiative for establishing nuclear program in the United States. Einstein supported them. So Oppenheimer immersed in his work fully. He believed that the only way to escape from all that haunted him — from Gene, the fear to be left behind, from unresolved issues of beauty and pain. It was during this period in his life, when General Leslie Grows appeared in his life and he was proposed to become the head of the nuclear program. Life was meaningfull. But at the same time he realised: the closer he moves to his goal — the metaphysical culmination of his search for initial part of life, the more lonely he became. He found his Sinai, which was hidden inside the atom. But he lost everyone he loved. The countdown is over. But for a few seconds for some reason nothing happens. Is this a failure? But unbearably bright light flashes on the horizon. And the same moment Oppenheimer thought: «Lord, forgive me, because I went wrong», and felt a great relief. And with general triumph scientist and philosopher Robert Oppenheimer

finally realized that the world has changed, and the new Sinai is ahead, one needs just enough force. St. Christopher Pray for Us Svyatyj Xrystofore, Molysya za Nas What did he have? Everything a windsurfer needs — wind, perfect waves in the Gulf of Aqaba , relentless Egyptian sun and yet another joint, which will provide unbeaten rush, and , of course, a board and sails. So what happened , my friend , where from did this inner voice come, with his direct questions that seems to be coming from direct from the heart ? Who is that invisible critic — a dark figure , called to supervise you , superego , public opinion , closest friends’ opinion, and what price are you willing to pay for the truth? Or, perhaps, the culprit of this is Khronokosmos — a myth or path to the absolute truth, from which it is so short to reach for God?.. And then there is fear , which brings with itself coward desire to escape — from reading, from unusual thoughts, from new self, from God that is waiting for you somewhere out there, on the threshold of the truth. So hold on, hero, if you really a hero... Maybe it’s time to meet with yourself, a real self in your own heart. And let St. Christopher be next to you — cynocephalus, half-man, half-dog, patron of bachelors, carriers, long-distance lorry drivers, travelers, storms, epileptics, gardeners, toothache and ... windsurfers

The Last Love of Asura Maharaj Ostannya Lyubov Asury Maxaradzha “The Last Love of Asura Maharadj” is a novel-allegory, written in a form of a Bollywod “love story”, which takes place in New-York on the background of the protest actions “Occupy Wall Street”. Asura Maharaj is a demon, a young scientist originally from the lower worlds. He falls in love with an earthen girl, a blind prophet Dasha, who is originally from Ukraine. In pursuit of exploring a new, revolutionary feeling, unknown to the lower worlds, the demon dares to make a decisive step — to become a man and feel the range of human feelings to the fullest. He leaves his luxurious underground shrine and goes to our planet, to New York, to offer his beloved marriage. Having met Dasha, Asura Maharaj makes her proposal, but the next day the bride suddenly leaves the newly-made «fiance», proving up on “her own unworthiness “ to be his life companion. Asura Maharaj is alone in New York ... The path to the beloved is full of trials and Asura Maharaj decides to change radically in order to experience in full what it means to love. The name «Asura Maharaj» comes from Sanskrit. «Asura» means «demon» and «Maharaj» — lord. So the protagonist himself is the lord of demons — a character, who, despite all his flaws, takes the path of transformation. Asura Maharaj writes fiction book about his life in the underground world and on Earth, and finally meets Dasha in order to never part with her. This is a story about finding meaning, higher than the simple luxury of life. The book is imbued with sentiments of the East. In particular, in terms of aesthetics the author got a lot in the ancient Indian culture.

Songs of Love and Eternity (New Book) Pisni pro ljubov i vičnist’ This is a story about modern spirit workers – immigrants in social networks, refugees to internal Indias, middle class hippies, rural magicians and urban yogis ... The stories that were written in travels and inspired by wandering – in South Sinai, India, Kalmykia and Ukraine. They are for those who are tired of the emptiness inside and go search for the truth... It is prose of the decisive movement of destiny, when there is no hope to live as before and when under feet there is only way ahead. Sinai cycle, on which Deresh has been working from the summer of 2011 till early 2014, and he named it prose about internal migration. So what is awaiting someone who wants to rush into new works by Liubko Deresh? Probably the same educational trend that is felt in previous stories. The same gentle tone, the same mosaic stories by downshifters wandering in exotic locations. They have lost somehing in Europe, and, perhaps, they will find their «I» once again in Sinai, in India, Kalmykia... Anywhere, but not in the familiar environment amidst Eastern-European realities. However, Deresh is in some way mocking the travelers, hinting that downshiftng has already become a fashion trend, and escape from own civilization is often only a temporary whim. Time passes and people get used to any circumstances. Arabic tunes are already not so unusual as when you first heard them. Food is not so strange, and people do not seem strangers. Their unusual culture gets closer to you. Everything returns to the familiar circle and melodic stories by Deresh prove this. His «Sinai» prose is the prose of crisis. When usual values lose their value, a person starts looking in other treasury. In this case the treasury is Eastern. But is it bottomless? Excep for musing about life and loneliness, the collection of «Songs of

Love and Eternity» has some comic elements. For example, in the story «Zobaken nicht kusaken». The main heroine is looking for love and this process is laid-back and humorous. Or the funny interlude «Dad, your son is vegetarian» revealing tragicomicality of the family situation in which there exists a strong cult of eating meat. Once one family member has become a vegetarian, it caused outrage of others. The most interesting is the story with the repulsive name «And the dog would not return to its spew». This is confession of the dog Jerry, who has traveled a lot, got into numerous troubles and the most important thing – was looking at the world with eyes wide open, eyes of a statesman and philosopher. It is not surprising that each of us can find something for himself in that trivial allegory – a dog, wandering across the world. The story begins with a minor-yelping note, and we can say that it ends with the same note as well. It’s like a circle of samsara: «I have understood in old age that life is something you have to wait out – as one waits out rain that catches on the way. Just sleep out, as one can sleep out pain, hunger, the whole boredom of my life. Where do I have to escape from this island of life? I, the poor thing, beaten by life».

ksana Forostyna (34) wrote the first draft of her debut novel «Duty Free» back in 2001. At that time, she served as a press secretary for Dzyga Art Association, a unique cultural and intellectual organization, which organized concerts, festivals, and a contemporary art gallery — all in Lviv, her native city. Ms. Forostyna was executive producer of an FM radio station which was one of Dzyga’s media projects. Only a few lines remain of that first draft in the final version of «Duty Free», however her observations of those times, incredibly talented people she worked with (1998 — 2002), and the profound effect of their audacious cultural (and partly political) rebellion against the vicious and provincial regime in Ukraine — these make up the rich

background of the novel. She entered this world for first time at the age of 18, when she was a cultural reporter for the Lviv local newspaper. Oksana returned to journalism in 2003, covering national politics for the daily Lvivska Gazeta and then as the local reporter for Voice of America. In 2006, as an activist for the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine, she prepared, negotiated, and signed the Editorial Policy Agreement with Lvivska Gazeta management — the first such agreement in the Ukrainian press. Less than a year after that, she was fired for her union activity and worked as freelance journalist, mostly for international media. Her articles have been published in BusinessWeek, Transitions Online, and the Ukrainian Observer. Next, she became a communication consultant, joining pro.mova company, where she was the member of the company’s Board of Directors and senior account manager overseeing projects including branding, development of communication strategies. Currently, Oksana is an associate executive editor for Krytyka journal (Kyiv, Ukraine) and executive editor for Krytyka Online — a new, ambitious, and avant-garde online media project. She resides in Kyiv.

Duty Free Duty Free Early in the spring of 2009 36-year old American business consultant Elijah Melnyk travels to train the Ukrainians. He has his own Ukrainian story, as a young expat in mid 1990s: armed with a university diploma and a command of Ukrainian — the language of his late father, he came then to the Western Ukrainian city of Lviv as a Peace Corps volunteer. Elijah was inspired by the early 1990s generation of young Western expatriates, the recent Fall of the Berlin Wall, and the rocketing changes in Eastern Europe. Elijah travels through Western Ukraine to Kyiv with his slightly reckless Ukrainian assistent Taras, the road is full of silly adventures, freaks, shady businessmen, and bohemian types, all while flash-backing to his previous Ukrainian experience. In 1996 he accidentally happened to make friends with Lviv art mileu, and soon started an affair with Wanda, local rock star and radio DJ. She was seven years older, married, with a child, and a bunch of problems — a total mess. Fascinated by her music, fame, drive, and charisma, he was eagerly trying to maintain a real relationship, however overwhelmed by her crazy rhythm of life, drugging fans, and family issues. Both she, and his new artistic friends opened up the Lviv underground scene for him, the scene that is in fact a twilight and seductive world, full of Imperial ghosts. Elijah soon began to feel frustrated and oppressed by the sense that life was somewhere else, and he’s just waisting his time among the freaks and loosers. The new millenium began, and Elijah came back to States. He tried to take a «normal“ path as his peers did in their early 30s after travelling and living overseas. But he never settled down, and never had gotten rid of the feeling he’s missing something important. He was traveling, building his career, dating — and desperately trying to catch the magic moments of

world mechanics uncovering itself and history in the making. He knew what that taste. Meanwhile, his old Lviv friends — Blum, an artist, and «Fairy», a cultural manager, kept him posted on the ongoing events and dramatic changes in Ukraine. Their joyous, carefree, and daring world was threatened, and finally ruined by Kuchma’s regime. Wanda had been fired from the radio station and became a real estate agent to earn her living. Ironically, Elajah failed to fulfill the dream of his youth: he watched the Orange revolution in Ukraine, the greatest historical event in that part of the world since the Fall of Berlin Wall and velvet revolutions in the Eastern Europe, again on TV, as he did in his teenage years... Having finally arrived, Kyiv, Elijah sees Wanda’s face on a billboard and seeks her out. She is now a quite successful VJ, and still married the same feeble man. After nine years apart, Elijah and Wanda rekindle their affair. However, now something new stands between them — the insight Elijah learned along the way from Lviv to Kyiv.

e is a writer, literary scholar, translator, PhD. He was born in Ivano-Frankivsk, now lives and works in Lviv. He participates actively in cultural life of Ukraine, but also Germany and Austria. He debuted in 1986 as a poet. For his first book of poems «Arabesques of Memory» (1995) received the All-Ukrainian literary prize «Blagovist» (1996). He began writing prose in the late 80’s, abd after the break returned to it in the mid 90’s. He is the author of books of poetry and essays, feuilletons, stories, novels, many literature translations and a theoretical work «Form and fi gure». Thus, Tymofiy Havryliv translated for Ukrainian reader works of the Austrian poetmodernist Georg Trakl and «the most scandalous Austrian writer», smashing critic of «Austrian soul»

Go and Take Vyjdy i viz’my Novel “Go and Take” is actually a story of a family, may be of an average one, and maybe not. The characteristic for Havryliv heartfelt hint, and love to those so various people whom the stream of life brings into a typical Ukrainian town of the period of changes, would not leave the reader indifferent. Russian Theme Rosijs’kij Sjuzhet Eugenia Kononenko, who is considered in Ukraine one of the best masters of stories and novels, — this time is the author of a novel, which is, however, wrote with elegance and succinctness of small genres. Why is this Ukrainian novel named «Russian Theme?» The fact is that we consider here a kind of remix of a novel in verse by Olexander Pushkin «Eugene Onegin», based on the realities of modern Ukraine. Actually, the time in which the events of the novel are unfolding are present days starting from the crisis 90ties. The protagonist of the novel, named like the Pushkin’s hero — Eugene, grew up in a family of Kyiv intelligentsia, and is the bearer of a double identity. Like most young intellectuals, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, he finds himself in certain vacuum: no work, broken plans, unfulfilled dreams, unsettled household. In this state, he does an «Onegin-like» deed: he moves to a village. And there he meets two sisters who are somewhat similar to Pushkin’s Tatyana and Olga, and there even something similar to a duel between the beautiful sister’s fiance and him takes place. The relationship between Eugene and the younger sister, who fell in love with him in a child-like genuine manner, is developing in such a way that he not quite delicately, though not intentionally offends the inlove girl by his arrogant attitude and ignorance, and thus rejects her love. Then life of the main character throws him to the United States, where he more or less settles his life, gets married and ... one day meets that same

in-love with him girl from the village. However, she is not a funny provincial anymore, but a successful business woman. The fact that Eugene has once ignored her love, rejected her feelings, spurred her to become well-educated, and being hard-working, gained her present high status. And Eugene, having met her now, falls in love. But this time it is her turn to reject his love... The text is written with slight irony, events are unfolding on the background of the current for Ukraine realities: bilingualism, emigration, crisis in the country, search for identity. The Executor (New Book) In the new book by Eugenia Kononenko there are combined novels and miniatures in some respect intertwined witn the topic of creativity and books. These are not memories, but specific experience of the writer, who knows the secrets about how the texts are conceived, born and live their lives. How do those who are near and those who are far treat them. Can a literary text truly kill? And can it save? And can it rescue? Sergeant Ivan Ivak sincerely does his job of executing people without any remorse. Obviously, he has been properly motivated: he hangs the enemies of the Soviet Union. And, suddenly, one of the sentenced to death with a strange name Gabriel Deus, turns to be different from others. This man was not morally destroyed, like all the prisoners. He was arrogantly joking with his executioners, got the right to the death wish as convicted, prayed before his execution, refused to wear a cover on his head. Then the halter war torn, Gabriel Deus fell, hurt himself, but did not die. And the convict was brought out from the death ward not in a coffin, but on a stretcher, and not his legs, but head forward.

The executor’s calm life was disrupted. He could not sit still, he begins to fear of something unknown to himself, he feels very uncomfortable in this world. One doctor advised him to write about his anxiety. Ironically, he was mastering it bit by bit. At least writing made him feel substantially easier. The executor was gradually becoming a writer, an author, whose works were included in school textbooks. Under the conditions of severe censorship in the Soviet Union times, Ivan Ivak failed to fully express himself, but in some things he has succeeded. He was discharged from the secret police, started working in a publishing house, had a happy family, raised two children. His wife Lyuba died during the time of Perestroika. Ivan and Luba have sincerely talked only when she was lying death-sick. Thay talked about the Ivak’s service, when he was executor of death penalties, and about the hard Lyuba’s experience in those years, which, however, were still not forgotten. After the collapse of the USSR, a completely different life began. Ivak’s son emigrated abroad, his daughter and her family live in their parents’ apartment. Ivak himself has lost that high social status, which have the writers in a totalitarian state. He is sitting through the night in the editorial office of one once very honorable publishing house, and is trying to write sincerely the history of his life. It was very difficult, although it was already possible to write and to ignore the censorship. And one dark night to Ivan Ivak’s office came a guy, who called himself the grandson of the man, whom he has executed. He began to choke the former executor, seeking money compensation for the past sins. There were no money in the editorial office safe, and the guy left without anything, leaving off the tape recorder on, which was playing a revolutionary song, to which in those remote days the enemies of the Soviet Union were hung. Ivan Ivak felt that it was his end, he was going to die of suffocation, exactly as died those whom he has hung. And so unbearable was the roar of that revolutionary song. But someone has pitied him and turned off the tape recorder. It was Gabriel Deus, whose secret Ivan Ivak has not yet solved. He came to Ivak at his last minute to fulfill his last wish. Ivan Ivak dies. And the watchman of the publishing house, while reporting about the death of Ivak, tells that before the death the old was talking about something loudly. Obviously, it was near-death nonsense. He was talking to himself. For there was not phone in his office, and nobody came to him because nobody could pass the watchman unnoticed. Relatives and acquaintences have sincerely missed the old writer of the previous epoch. His books are unlikely to be republished and read. But there is still hope that there will be found and read that copy-book, in which have Ivan Іvak has wrote down the events of his life and his thoughts about them, scrupulously and painfully choosing each word for his difficult confession.

Guest editor of the special Ukrainian theme of the world literature online magazine Words Without Borders (New York, USA). He is a member of literary residences in Finland and Latvia. Since September 2014 he teaches Creative Writing at the leading Ukrainian university. Curator of contemporary art exhibitions, which were presented both in galleries and in museums. Curator of the Literary program of the recognized institution of contemporary art PinchukArtCentre(2010-2012), and of the International Literary Program of the interdisciplinary festival GOGOLFEST (2013-2014). He translated from Russian novels by Boris Akunin, from English - stories and poems by Salman Rushdie and poems by Jenny Holzer and Damien Hirst. Pontyyizm (New Book) Pontyyizm Collection of stories «Pontyyizm» by Olexandr Mykhed includes 25 stories that impress with the variety of forms and intricated plots. Pontyyizm is cruel religion of our time, it is worshiped by people who are ready to pay high price for the wealth inaccessible for them. People who want to be someone else but not themselves. The key theme that unites the stories is a new generation of war. The war that is led in social networks, media, and all war actions are going on the shooting stages. However, they lead to very real victims. In each story the war in some way affects the fate of the heroes of the book. Olexander Mykhed depicts reality pierced by media and social networks. The book «Pontyyizm» was written in 2011-2012. When it was published in July 2014, unfortunately, it became clear that in many ways it was a messenger of events that unfolded in Ukraine in the end of 2013-beginning of 2014: «That what we have experienced recently, and what we are worrying about now, seems to be looking at us now not only from the pages in social networks, but also from the pages of «Pontyyizm» (Liubov Bagatska) Critics call the prose by Mykhed wicked, but, nevertheless, in some stories he was «dreamy and metaphorical, capable to build from dirt and asphalt an image close to poetry» (Anastasia Gerasymova). The critics point out that the stories of «Pontyyizm» may be close to every reader because everyone will find something for himself - rigidity, dirt, erotic, lyrics and tenderness. Prose by Olexander Mykhed has a strong cinematic potential. For the year 2015 planned the shooting of a short film «Meat», based on the similar story. The director will be a Ukrainian filmmaker Olexander Ratii, the winner of the International Film Festival «Youth 2013».

Astra (New Book) Astra «Astra» is a dynamic psychothriller, which touches the deepest fears of the reader’s consciousness. The entire world you know and love is in fact only conditionality. The main character of the novel, adventurer Victor Varetskyi, receives an invitation to attend a workshop «Astra» in the mysterious locality in the Carpathians. Together with a group of participants Victor discusses the key texts of the world philosophy and understands that he is plunging into mysterious reality, the essence of which is the mystery of the universe. At the end of a week-long workshop Victor realizes that his inner world has been created again. The culmination of the first part is the staging of «Antigone» by Sophocles, directed by Victor. The play is an ancient ritual, a kind of sacrifice, during which forces from another reality that are taking control over the bodies of actors, speaking with their mouths, get to our world. Victor gets an offer to work in the foundation «Astra». He uses this possibility to penetrate deeper into the mystery. Together with the director of the foundation Victor goes to the United States, to the central office in small town Astra near Boston. The director reveals to Victor the hidden subsoil riches under Astra − in the depths there are ancient powers, the supreme race that feeds from radiation of human souls. Whenever in human consciousness there is rooted a thought of the Great dead (Aristotle, Hobbes and others), a human soul, similar to milch cattle, radiates special glow, and the ancient powers are fed with it. They eat scraps and dirt of a soul, generated when a person is experiencing a real catharsis − purification of his nature through art. And the staging of «Antigone» is one of such catalysts that promote the development of catharsis.

Victor feeds Director to the ancient forces. When he gets out, in the room there are placed TV-sets, on which the director’s final message is projected, recorded yet in Kyiv. Victor realizes that everything was planned in advance, and he, who was seeking freedom from all, was looking for special knowledge, is actually just a pawn in someone else’s game. The reason for this is fate, so as the director who had to guard the secret of the universe, was, in fact, his father. Father, whom Victor was searching all his life. Victor decides to tell his story, write it down in order to reveal the truth. But the reader realizes that Victor himself actually wanted to become a Great dead and to be rooted by his history in the readers’ minds. The end of the novel leaves the question open - if the events described in the book did actually take place. Or maybe all this are only delusions and visions of Victor’s sick mind. The solution of this question depends on the reader − whether he believes in the reality portrayed in the book. Work on the book began in November 2013 and to some extent is a projection of the events of Euromaidan in autumn-winter 2013-2014: the story of search of personal freedom comes to the level of universal aspiration for freedom and independence. Although the novel is fiction, it is still based on a deep study of the canon of world philosophy and rethinking of the key provisions. The narration is led from the first person − the story of Victor Varetskyi, told by him. The novel creates powerful cinematic images, creating maximum tension and dynamics, focusing readers’ attention on the philosophical ideas behind the stunning twists of the thriller’s plot.

Book Fund Grants for translation of contemporary Ukrainian literature The BOOK FUND is a part of the «Cultural Horizons» Program of Open Ukraine Foundation to promote Ukrainian culture abroad. The grant program supports translation of contemporary literature outside Ukraine in order to promote Ukrainian literature and support intercultural dialogue. Popularization of the best Ukrainian writers will increase understanding of Ukraine internationally. Who can apply: foreign publishing houses. Eligibility: Works of Ukrainian fiction published during the last 50 years, such as essays, documentaries, social and political essays. Translation of poetry is not eligible. Terms: Grants can be used to cover costs of translation only. The grant-giving procedure includes two stages: the first part of the grant (50% of total grant amount) is awarded to the applicant after obtaining copyright for translation and signing an agreement with the interpreter. The remainder of the grant is transferred to the applicant when the translation is completed. Deadline: Twice a year – 15 April and 15 November The Open Ukraine Foundation Program Board will evaluate applications within 45 days from the date of submission. Applicants will be informed of evaluation results via e-mail or post.
